Double French onion smash burger with fries - super juicy (was a bit greasy), perfect portion of gooey Gruyère, caramel used onions. I think it's unfair to only rate a bar by their food, which is not really their strength. Tbh, most bar food are just meh, you dont come here for gourmet food anyway. Set food aside, this is a great bar for groups! They have large tables where your whole group of 10 or 20 can all sit in. There are several sections with fun games like pinball, skeeball, basketball, football machine, and pool table for your group to compete and have fun. Some times, the line gets super long, just take a beer and check other games out. When you come back maybe there's no one at it. The drink selection is okay, more choice of beers than cocktails but you can always ask them for something off menu. There are two bars on either side of the bar so you dont have to cross the ocean of ppl to get more drink. Coat check closes before 9, which is a bit annoyed but you can hang it where you sit. Watch out it's hot inside. Restroom are big and pretty clean for a bar, a plus point for a big crowded place like this. read more

This review is based on the food for take-out during COVID times in late July 2020. My friends and I were craving burgers so went to the American. I ordered the South of the Border burger w/ fries. Anything that has guac and pico de gallo is an automatic easy choice for me. 1) South of the Border Burger, $14.00 - (3/5) The burger patty...there's just not much to rave about. The burger patty lacked flavor and was not tender. Both guac and pico were solid, as one would expect. The surprising positive of the burger was actually the toasted bun that was mildly sweet - this added a nice flavor to the burger. 2) Fries, $8.00 - (1/5) High school cafeteria fries for more than half the price of a burger is not worth it. I came with a couple of friends and we had a few drinks. the place was pretty busy. Best part is that there is no coverage charge. We did shots and also i got a hemingway daiquiri. Have been wanting to go here ever since they released a burger on a Lee's honey donut in July. Well today was the day! This is one of the best burgers I have had and it being on a donut is just even better. The salty and sweet pairs very nicely. All covid measures are in place here with plexiglass painted little murals between each table. Service was fast and friendly and my meal came out very quickly . I came here for dine-out as it was one of the more inexpensive deals on the dine-out menu. I had a beer and their fried chicken sandwhich and the dessert was a mouse. It was during the pandemic, but before they shut down indoor dining for the second....maybe third time and much before they allowed only patio seating. They led me to a seat, but I requested the window seat by Main st. so that I could watch the traffic go by. It certainly was a different time from when people would come here to drink and socialize pre-pandemic. Despite it being dine-out, I was the only one sitting in the bar when I got here in the afternoon. I enjoyed my fried chicken sandwhich and ordered a beer while I contemplated life post pandemic. Man this chicken sandwhich is juicy I thought to myself. Watching the cars roll by and the occasional person walk by the window I thought to myself, whatever beer this is (I asked the server to bring me whatever), it was really good. One of my fave bars in the city for large group outings and to catch any sports games. The place has got two levels, plenty of large long tables, and arcade games, a pool table, and a foosball scattered around the entire bar. Drink-wise, they serve a variety of beers on taps, high balls, and cocktails. To be honest, I've only ever had beer and tequila shots here, which have been great, but next time I'd love to try their cocktails. Food-wise, they've partnered with Downlow Chicken Shack to serve up a variety of burgers and bar food, which kicks up their bar food game to a whole new level. I've tried their Americana and South of the Border burger (both subbed for a veggie patty), which were both humongous and delicious. My dad always said one of the signs of a good burger is that it's messy and damn are these messy. Another pro is that they don't charge you to sub their beef patty for a veggie patty. Their crispy cauliflower, chili cheese fries, and smoked onion rings are also a win in my books. They don't have servers here and you order everything at the bar. But, every time I've come in, the bartenders have always been so friendly. Especially when it gets busy on the weekends and this place gets packed, I've only had great experiences with the staff here. Currently they're open for takeout and delivery, but I can't wait to visit once their doors re-open for a beer (or five) and a couple rounds of skeeball and basketball. read more

This place is so much fun! You can be an adult and a kid at the same time! They have pinball machines, skee ball, a Foosball and a pool table, along with their long bars tables. Great location for a large group of friends just wanting to hang out and play games. Not so good for food so make sure you grab dinner before. They have a very limited food and small drink menu. There are about 6-8 beers on tap and a small selection of cocktails and wine. The menu was limited to burgers, fries and few other appetizers. My friends were raving about the burgers, they said it reminded them of In and out burgers. The poutine however was a huge disappointment. The poutine was cold when it arrived and it came on a small cardboard container like the ones from a food truck or a cafeteria. The fries were also over cooked and too salty. For a place that only offers a small menu, I'm surprised they can't get a simple thing like fries right. I didn't stay for long but it started to get busy around 8:30pm and many of the tables were booked up for large groups. Went back because they've updated the burgs and I thought maybe they had corrected some shortcomings. Sadly not. Buns are still untoasted and due to the incredible amount of sloppy sauce, it falls apart midway through. The folks behind DL Chicken are cooking things now and while they may know a thing or two about chicken, they have a lot to learn about burgers. Their merch sauce is quite runny and so when they dump it all over their burger it quickly destroys the bun. The patty is overworked and ends up being a bit tough. And they use ​pretty mild cheddar, so you'll be forgiven for thinking they forgot the cheese like I did. The fries, however, were amazing. And a good value with a huge basket for $4. A table nearby ordered the onion rings and they too looked excellent. Go figure, the folks behind fried chicken know how to fry things. Too bad they can't make a burger. read more

I went here with my friends recently. The vibe of the place is great and there are a lot of fun games to play like the basketball shooting game and pinball. I was having a great time until a man came up to our table and started hitting on all the girls. He eventually got the hint that we weren't interested (we were with our boyfriends lol) and started to walk away. As he was walking by me, he pinched the side of my torso. My friend saw it happen and a few members of our group talked to the staff telling them what happened. I was really disappointed that they let the guy continue his night there and did not do anything to prevent him from doing it again. After this, the creepy dude sat down at the table next to us and winked at me when he thought nobody was looking. Unfortunately I won't be coming back here because the management at this place tolerates creeps grabbing women, and it wouldn't be fair to myself or any of my friends to risk something like this or something worse happening again. read more

A nice hip joint. Minimalist industrial styling with arcade & pool tables. This is a hipster bar filled with under 25ers and a few 40+ers. They have a rotating cross country tap which was a lovely hefeweizen from newfoundland's quidi vidi brewery. Happy hour burger and beer comes with a can of a fairly regular lager. I had the veggie burger and added a slice of bacon for good measure. Really tasty burger, the only downside on the patty was that it didn't hold together that well but really great flavouring. They couldn't tell me what exactly was in it but chick peas were mentioned. Fries are excellent. Overall a great low key place to hang out, the alpha-male types haven't started showing up yet so great relaxed vibe. One complaint, they had what seemed like a trio come in to act as a DJ. They brought their vinyls and had 4 turntables to work with. They did not, however, read the room or play anything consistent track-to-track. First impression is always important. The staffs are all super friendly and welcoming. Clean restaurant and spacious. Lots of cool illustrations and the decorations is not messy but there's definitely a lot to see. Lots of vibrant colours, contemporary and cute. Grabs my attention and brightens up my day. Lots of tables and seats inside and a few outside too. Some arcade games (unfortunately it's not available during COVID, otherwise, it'd be open). 2 ATM inside the restaurant so it's convenient but they obviously do take cards. Washroom downstairs and "sit down" is the ladies restroom and "stand up" is the men's restroom. Clean restrooms and a few stalls inside. A bit dim but I like the vibe and the blue lighting isn't tacky but just right. A bit rigid and contemporary feel with the texture concrete walls and big deep metal sinks. Modern but almost classy too. I thought it's pretty creative for a simple sign. A few items on the drinks and food menu. Nice beer and tender juicy beef in their burgers. The fried chicken is definitely a bit different from most of the Asian or North American fried chicken I've had but they are good and crispy on the outside and still fairly soft on the inside. their onion rings are super crispy but I personally personal more onions to really balance that flavour and texture out. Before heading to The American. I have been to Down Low Chicken a couple of times (the same owners as The American.) I was expecting the same great quality as the chicken joint but I was very disappointed. Went on the 31st of October 2020 around noon. Sat down and waited an hour for the food when the server that gave us the water said it would take 30 minutes for the food to arrive.... An hour for food?? Even fine dining restaurants do not take that long. This is absolutely absurd for pub / burger joint. I ordered 3 items, they had a special which is basically a sugar coasted Lee's donut turned into a burger. The other two orders was the fries on the down low and onion rings. Both of the last two items I have previously ordered at the DL Chicken Shack. An hour has passed and the party has received the 3 items at the same time. The Lee's donut special was amazing and perfect except it was cold in the middle. The patty wasn't fresh, it tasted like the meat was sitting for a while after it was cooked. Surprisingly, other than the cold patty, the donut worked well as a replacement of a bun. Felt like a dessert and a good burger at the same time. The fries on the downlow was NOTHING like the DL Chicken Shack. The fries looked like McDonald fries and it tasted like terrible cafeteria fries. Not the same curvy fries from DL Chicken Shack. They added too much sauce and pickle onions to the batch of fries. It was super sour and I lasted a couple of bites. The fries weren't even fresh as well. It wasn't even hot. Felt like cold fries that had been sitting for 30 minutes. The piece of chicken thigh given was smaller than the order from DL Chicken Shack. It was a 3/3 experience that marked every checkmark. The fries, the toppings (sauce and pickles), and the disappointing small chicken thigh. It looked like they had given half a piece?? The onion rings were good but didn't come with sauce for some reason. Had to request it and they gave the pickle mayo which was pretty good. Tasted the same from DL Chicken Shack. Overall a big disappointment when the party had to wait 1 hour for the food. Management needs to look on why a restaurant / pub needs an hour to serve out the food. I know it can be busy at times but it felt like organization was a problem when the food came out cold. The only positive experience I had was the friendly server (glasses guy with wavy hair) and the Lee's donut burger (would have been better if it was a warm and fresh patty). I was really unsure why they had fries on the downlow available to this restaurant if the quality isn't the same. (fries, sauce and pickles are too much given the sour taste.) read more

Way over priced on food and drinks. Too loud to talk to your friends... staff don't seem too interested in having jobs really. Burger is really inconsistent..sometimes its overcooked.. sometimes its undercooked... sometimes its messy and sometimes its not... so I dont really know what to say other than that. I didnt try the fries since my burger didnt come with any and they are $4.00 extra.. Tips on the machine start at 18%... so ya its a millennial place. I saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on March 31st and book marked it ever since. I finally came here to play some pinball, have lunch and have an awesome latte. I love the concept of this space where you have a nice coffee shop in the front portion, lunch portion, a bar and some games. I like how they're covering all the entertainment bases. Burger was decent, nothing to write home about, however, filling none the less. The staff were super friendly, especially the barista who made my drink. Poor guy had to put up with my slight hangry but apologized. What would make this place a 5 in my eyes is that if they played some atmospheric music and if they added some spices into the meat patty itself. Minor things that are fixable. read more

A friend and I tried to go in for lunch but we were stopped at the door by a guy demanding ID. We're both over 50, so it wasn't about age. He claimed that it was a government requirement because their licence is "Liquor primary", which is total BS. There is no requirement that patrons have ID if an inspector shows up, as he claimed. I suspect that we were denied entry based on age, that is too old for their preferred clientele. Me and my husband tried the Merch burger with fries and oh.my.god. I would describe the feeling as being equivalent to having angels playing violins right in front of you. Perfectly toasted bun, juicy beef patty and the right amount of dressing! The dressing is their special merch sauce which is also served with the fries. Loved the seasoning on the fries, its definitely unique and delicious. Service is fast and very pleasant. All in all a solid 10/10 experience :) read more
