This place is a joke. First we walk in and the menu screens weren't working properly. Should have known from that to walk out. Secondly the area that holds the food after made had a "Popeyes" chicken box stored there. WTF that's so unsanitary. Health department would have shut this place down if they'd just showed up. I had to ask so you all sell checked now, just to be a smart as and to point out that customers can see the box that they weren't supposed to have there any ways. I tried a Smashburger in Fairfax a while back, as well as one in Aurora, CO - both times it was pretty good. I was pretty excited when I saw this new one pop up here in Gainesville. Well, the Gainesville Smashburger sucks... the burger was greasy and tasted like crap. I got fries and onion... things. They weren't onion rings, rather strips of onion soaked in grease. The employees are the typical Gainesville server experience. Highschool kids who lack a sense of employment mortality and basic hygiene. FOOD: The fries are borderline inedible - limp frozen potatoes slathered in grease, entombed in garlic and immolated in mounds of dried industrial-strength rosemary. The unseasoned and under-cooked burger was trapped in the soggiest bun I have ever eaten. The milkshake (which finally arrived halfway through our meal) was thin and runny, which meant that all the mix-ins had settled to the bottom, leaving a watery, flavorless base incapable of supporting the Butterfinger candy. ATMOSPHERE: The worst. When we arrived the place was packed - not with customers, but with high school kids waiting for the next movie to begin. They weren't eating anything - just monopolizing all the tables. Toward the end of our meal (around 9:30) the place emptied out. Into this void stepped the manager, who spent a good three minutes yelling from the back of the restaurant (where we were seated) to an employee halfway across the dining room working on the soda machines. There are at least three other chain burger joints (Five Guys, Red Robin, Foster's Grille) within a few miles that offer significantly better value, food, and dining experience. When the food came I was kind of shocked at how small the burger was. My meal was the same size as my daughters kids meal. My review might be a little bias because I hate hamburgers, but I did receive great informative feedback from my dad. First of all the smash fries are gross and greasy. The fries are smothered with rosemary (which is not my favorite herb to begin with) and just not good. The burger-according to my dad- was just average and nothing to call home about. He said 5 guys up the street was much better. I had the chicken fingers and they were okay. You could tell that they were previously frozen. Nothing special. The service was what you should expect from high schoolers running the front. They messed up my dad's order at first, but then fixed it. They said they could not because there is no way they could ring it up, we said can you just ring up a burger and charge us that price but just make a grilled cheese? I'm a big fan of Smashburger and this was my first time visiting this location. It was much more decorated and designed for their style as compared to the other locations I've been to. The service was quick, friendly and the place was clean. Seating was plentiful. The burgers are awesome and I encourage creating your own. Nothing beats putting a fried egg on a burger! Our first visit to Smashburger. Since we are getting one at Dulles Landing, I know we'll be returning, at least to that location. This one is right across the street from the movies, so it's well situated. But, there's a Nando's Peri-Peri down the block and I'll probably give that place a try before returning here. The food was decent. We got: Fried pickles: OK, but the "Smash Sauce" that accompanies this and other things as well is really salty Veggie Frites: Liked the green beans, but not the carrots. Carrots need more than a "flash frying" to be something other than hot crunchy carrot sticks. Kids grilled cheese: The kid liked it. Oreo milkshake: The kid liked it. Kids smashburger: The other kid was disappointed it didn't come with lettuce and tomato. The cashier asked if she wanted cheese but didn't ask her about any other toppings. She did like the burger. Truffle mushroom swiss burger: Tasty enough. Pretty greasy. I liked the egg roll. Fries: ok, if you like them really thin. I do like that the sides come in small portions and are priced reasonably. I finally saw Smashburger was opened and I was very excited to try it out. Since this restaurant just opened it was very packed and the line moved fairly slow. Now for the food... The burger - 3 stars, can't really taste the flavor of the meat. Burger was juicy, just not a great burger. Smashfries and haystack onions - 4 stars. Both of these have really good flavor. Ordered 2 smash burgers with my wife. My wife's came without most of the toppings she asked for and mine came out with toppings I did not ask for or want. My wife brought hers back to the counter and nobody really made much effort to fix it. Instead of taking the burger back and doing it right, they just gave her some toppings on the side. I told someone else my order was wrong as well and got a response of "sorry I just got here". No effort made to fix it. All in all food was ok, nothing special. Elevation Burger is much better. This is based on a takeout order, since it was entirely too busy to find a place to sit. Once I visit again and have a fresher burger, I may revise my review. Burgers are decent, I had the Spicy Baja burger with sweet potato fries, and my SO had a custom one with plain fries. Doesn't appear to have adult supervision, management or health and safety practices beyond signs. I just witnessed the food cook take a hair tie from a coworker to pull back her their hair that was loose after another customer complained. She took the hair tie and tie back her hair and proceeded continue making food. In fact my french fries. I told the person at the register she needed to change her gloves after touching her hair. Went there today with my family, food is great though a little over-priced for what you get in my opinion. The customer service at this location was fantastic, the wait for food was not bad, maybe 5 minutes max. Also, when the food arrived after the guy was gone someone in our group commented, "ah should have asked for jalapenos" though we didn't see anyone around suddenly a minute later jalapenos showed up with them commenting they heard we wanted some, this shows to me that they provide a lot of attention to customer needs. read more

I was working nearby and stopped in on a busy Saturday night... Even though the dining room was 2/3 full and there were a few people in line in front of me, I didn't have to wait long before giving my order and didn't wait too long afterwards for the food. The burger was AMAZING! Very FRESH and some of the BEST lettuce I've EVER had on a burger, it was "picture perfect!" The fries were very tasty and the menu offerings was amazing! The staff was very friendly too! While there, I saw how the staff took care of a member of the local public safety and was happy to see that they provide such generous service! By the way... 5 Guys has nothing on this place... The food I had wasn't greasy, was very tasty and they also didn't dump a load of fries on top of the burger in the bag. Smashburger is a great place to go after catching a flick from the nearby movie theatre. The line moves pretty fast though is always pretty long. I give it four stars because they always, and I mean always get my order wrong. And by the time they fix it you don't care or already finished your meal....very frustrating. Condiments and ingredients missing from my burger, the wrong type of fries just to name the constant issues I have. The buffalo and blue cheese burger or the chicken avocado club are my favs. I pick the sweet potato fries because they are more crunchy and flavorful. My kids love the Oreo shake but end up just needing to share one since it's so thick and filling. read more

Let me start out by saying, the only reason I'm giving Smash Burger two stars is because I love the food BUT that's only when they're capable of getting it right. I have ordered through Uber Eats at this location on many occasions, the first time they got the order completely wrong. The second time I ordered, it was okay. Food was cold but nothing an air fryer couldn't fix. Third time, food was great. Today.... everything was wrong. As the receipt on the bag clearly stated "Bacon Smash Burger", what was opened was a Turkey Mushroom Burger. The BBQ Ranch salad that was supposed to include Haystack Straws, Bacon and BBQ sauce included nothing but cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. I'm beyond disappointed. Our friends have been raving about Smash Burger so we had to go check it out while we were visiting the area. The vibe is very casual--felt a little bit like a Five Guys, with the counter ordering and tables/booths, but the decor was unique. The person who took our order was fairly friendly, which is rare in northern VA... The menu included burgers, chicken sandwiches (grilled or crispy), salads, and a kid's menu (there's more, just can't remember it all). We had a group of 7 and received our food very quickly. Now, for the important stuff-the food! The regular burger is a good sized (at least a 1/4 lb) burger--flavorful and juicy. The kids-sized burger was generous. They also offer a larger sized burger, but the regular was plenty for my teenaged son. The grilled chicken sandwiches are made with marinated chicken that has been pounded to an even thickness. The real stars here are the wide variety of toppings for the various sandwiches. There are some great combinations offered on the menu, as well as a "Build Your Own" option that allows you to choose your bun, meat, toppings, and a variety of upgraded (read: more expensive) toppings. As good as the sandwiches were, the French fries were even better. Shoestring fries are the variety available here. You can get plain ones, but why would you do that when you can order their Smash Fries (tossed in olive oil, garlic and rosemary)--oh my gawd they were ridiculous! They also have a buffalo fry option with a buffalo dry rub seasoning that was really good too. My kids were treated to milk shakes at the recommendation of our friends. These are the milk shakes of my childhood. Thick and made with dipped ice cream, served in a tall glass topped with whipped cream, a straw and a spoon. Oh, and you also get the metal mixing cup with the shake that didn't fit into the glass. There are lots of great restaurants in this area, but we will absolutely return to Smash Burger the next time we visit. read more

I ordered the Spicy Jalapeno Baja burger with fries and a chocolate milkshake. The food came out in less than 5 minutes. The burger looked appealing. The toppings looked fresh and the patty itself looked juicy but it was very thin (1/4lb.) and was swallowed by the bun. I would suggest getting the double patty if you want a little more beef. The shoestring fries were good. They were golden and crispy and salted just right. Also, they advertise that their shakes are made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream but it sure didn't taste as good as Haagen-Dazs. I am not a fan of chocolate syrup being added to my ice cream and I don't think it is necessary since Haagen-Dazs does make chocolate ice cream. The syrup made the shake overly sweet and a little chalky. Overall, I am not crazy about this place, but it is an ok place to eat if you are wanting a burger and are in the area. I ordered here for the first time today, their online ordering system is a little convoluted: When choosing "Customize Your Own Burger," choosing the meat topping (beef, turkey, black bean) appears as an add on rather than a choice selection. My family of 4 visited on a Tuesday night after my daughters play at around 8:45pm. There were two other couples in the restaurant. We placed our orders and sat down and that's where the whole process breaks down. First my first child's burger came out around 5 mins later, 3-4 mins later my oldest child's burger came out and 1 of 2 orders of fries, 3-4 mins later some drinks another fry and my wife's burger, 8-10 mins later my burger comes out and the shakes. By this time my family was done with their burgers and munching on fries, while I ate my burger alone. Kind of strange since there was nobody in the place. The kids who served us were laughing and cracking jokes and the lousy service seemed ok to them. In either case this isn't a good value for the money and the level of service. First time at Smashburger for me. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger (regular size) and smashfries. The burger was ok, not as greasy as a friend had advised, so that was a plus. The burger came with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup and yellow mustard. I'm not a huge yellow mustard fan and there was too much of it. So instead of grease on my hands I had mustard and ketchup. The burger is fairly thin, presumably because they smash it. I prefer a thicker burger. The bun was good, fresh and flavorful. Overall I would rate the burger as average. Nothing set it apart. The fries are interesting. They are the shoestring variety, which are a nice change of pace. They are seasoned with olive oil and herbs. Its good for a once in a while change up. They were crispy and salted well. The staff was friendly. Not a bad experience, but not great either. I will come again and get something different next time, maybe a shake. The regular size burger and an order of smashfries was plenty to fill me up, and I am a big fella.
