We have been to this shake shack location several times and have had almost everything on their menu by this point. Our first visit was right after they opened and it was a horrible wait. I'm talking 45 minutes for 6 burgers, fries and shakes. My expectation was pretty low at that point. We live 30 minutes from the location and when we arrived home I was disappointed in how they wrapped their to go food. The burgers were half wrapped and I just knew it was going to be cold. My husband took a bite and I knew it was good. He's a chef and is pretty picky about his food. The burgers were perfectly cooked. They were seared beautifully and still moist in the center. Flavor was 10 out of 10. How was the food still warm? No clue, but whatever they did it definitely worked! Seriously, try the burgers! Pros - burgers are amazing. My son even likes the chicken. I've never been to a Shake Shack prior to my visit to the newly opened location in Gainesville, VA. I've avoided trying to go in for the last week since the opening - as there has been a like out the door every time I drove by. I finally made it in - no line out the door (for a few minutes at least). There are 3 self ordering stations just inside the door - 2 of them had signs on them indicating they were "out of order." There is also a cashier station - so I ordered via a real person. I ordered the SmokeShack bacon double cheeseburger, an order of fries with cheese sauce and their hot spice seasoning blend, and a banana milkshake. $27.47 for a double cheeseburger, fries, and a shake. Wow. Expensive. I was given a number and went to sit and await my order. It 26 minutes for my order to arrive at my table. The SmokeShack double was tasty, the fries were hot, crispy, and cooked properly. The cheese sauce was bland - and the seasoning blend was a combination of cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and paprika - dumped on top of the cheese sauce. I love banana milkshakes - but it was loaded with crumbled cookie bits and a lot of whipped cream. I'd prefer a milkshake with no cookies bits and no whipped cream. This location has started off on the wrong foot. I understand that new businesses will have its hiccups, but they are totally dropping the ball! I've come to this location twice and both times I've had super long waiting times. Like i get a 10-15min wait for fresh food on a busy hour, but this was 30-45min!! I even ordered an hour and a half early to schedule my food. And it was STILL served 30min after the request timeframe. What really is the kicker, the app tells you to get there s little early for hot food. HA! The workers lack urgency to serve large groups of people. Dont get me wrong, I knew this location would do well once I knew they were coming, but management needs to kick it up a notch! I really hope this location picks it up. This place has a lot to work out. Primarily service and inventory. They make all customers who would like to order wait outside around the block while their entire restaurant is empty. Meanwhile, they have an about 12-15 staff on duty. One cashier. 3-4 floaters that don't appear to be doing anything. After waiting 45 mins outside, a staff member comes outside to inform everyone of all the ingredients they do not have which seems essential to about half the menu. I indicate to the cashier that my order was wrong. She says she is fixing it and is trying really hard. Her colleagues just criticize her for stepping away from register instead of helping her. The order comes. It's wrong. I attempt to rectify and the employee that steps in to talk to me is absolutely rude. Instead of trying to fix the problem, she lets me know that her colleague originally offering a concession was incorrect to do so. Waiting an hour for this type of service... They have major operations problems. Moreover, they have a culture problem with how they treat customers. The folks managing the employees putting in the work are rude and don't try to accommodate anyone. The lines wouldn't be so crazy if they actually allowed more than one group into the restaurant at a time and operated more than one register at a time. For a grand opening weekend they've got room for improvement. We visited on a Monday at 2 pm and the tables were not clean, the line was outside - you aren't allowed to wait inside, even though there's space, one of the order terminals is down and you can't use the second entry way door, it's weird. The server was great and friendly. The food took about 20 minutes and didn't come out super hot. The burger was fine and so were the fries. It's similar to smash burger. This location is not my favorite, but is most convenient. The area in general is quite busy, so they could do with a couple extra ordering kiosks. The wait time is quite long when ordering at the restaurant, so we usually order online. There are also perks/freebies if you order online, which is a plus. I've been to many Shake Shack's along the east coat and this location seems to be missing something with either the burger patty size or taste; perhaps they are a tad overcooked. Not sure why the reviews are so bad for this Shake Shack location. This was our family's experience. Appearance - the restaurant was spotless and during our time here people were walking around keeping it so. Staff - everyone was very friendly and, in my wife's words, sweet. When we ordered a hot dog for our dog, they also told us about their version of a pup cup. Which turned out to be a huge portion of ice cream and two big dog biscuits broken up in fours. Food - it came out pretty quickly and everything was at the right temperature. The fries were crisp and hot, the burger and hot dog were as expected. My wife tried the Dubai Shake (she said it was da bomb). It's her favorite shake. Outside - for those who have dogs, there are plenty of tables with good spacing. Most tables also have umbrellas. Price - typical Shack pricing, nothing new. We had burger, hot dog, fries, soda and a shake. Total with tax $38. Let me start by saying my wife and I love Shake Shack. Ever since their start in NYC I've been a fan. I've enjoyed quite a few locations in the DC & VA area since their arrival. Tysons, McLean, Mosaic, even a few locations in DC, all great experiences. So you can imagine our excitement and anticipation having a location minutes from our home in Gainesville. In the few weeks they've been open we've tried them twice. The 1st time the wait was 20 mins to order due to the line and about 30 min to get our food. We took it to go because of the crowd. Outside of the wait the burgers fries and milk shakes were ok. It was a to-go order so we didn't expect piping hot food when we got home. But yesterday we went again and decided to eat in. The crowd was still heavy but we found a seat. We ordered and waited 40 minutes before our order was ready and the burgers were cold when they arrived. We ordered no salt on our fries but they could have been warmer as well. From what I've seen in other locations the Gainesville location needs the shut down and spend a few days training their staff. I witnessed workers standing around, moving with no sense of urgency in spite of the crowd and online orders, and some that seemed a bit confused when asked questions by other customers. I'm hoping the Gainesville location works to resolve their issues as I look forward to supporting them. But if not, I'll be going to Mosaic to scratch my Shake Shack itch. read more

I first noticed you needed to order at kiosk on kiosk it said to notify if you have allergy. When I tried to notify them they said to order on screen. I stated nothing says if it's gluten free. When I asked if shakes were gluten free I was told they were not. Then I Looked up on online allergen menu and found out they are gluten free. When I asked again and the manager said it's only gluten free without milk. People working in restaurants should know about food allergens. Milk does not contain gluten. My family loves SS and we have visited locations across the DMV. This location has the worst service of any we have visited. And even with it being new, I'm astounded with how bad this place is run.
