Yes, this really was as good as it gets. A year and a half ago my then trusted service provider said it would cost $1000-$1500 to repair my old Amana -- with no guarantee. I was resigned to buying a new unit. But took my time since we also had a powerful window unit. When the window unit died I looked on Yelp and found Jay. His reviews were impeccable. But alas, when he arrived he said he didn't repair window units. So I asked him to check my long dead Amana. He took a good look and said if the condenser worked he could repair it for around $200 or so. I was floored. Jay worked his magic and presto, the Amana roared back to life. He saved me up to $10K and also provided a three month guarantee. Its been around three weeks since his visit and the Amana is keeping us at a comfy 79. Jay was very professional, friendly, and explained everything in great detail. He said the Amana was nearing the end of its productive life but reckoned it was good for this season and possibly another too. Jay is also well versed in current and foreign affairs so if you want to discuss the recently negotiated nuclear treaty with Iran, he's your guy. But sticking with my AC, finding Jay taught me a very valuable lesson. That being I was very happy with the company that came by twice a year to service my cooling and heating units. They never tried selling me a service that I didn't need. Hence, when told that my old unit was kaput -- and that investing in it was a lousy idea -- I had no reason to doubt their advice. I was having trouble with my old air conditioning unit in that is was not cooling enough and would never turn off. With the latest heat wave we have been experiencing here in Houston my old 13 year unit was simply not doing the trick anymore. I talked to my wife and we decided it was time to invest in a brand new system. I got several quotes from many big ac companies and was surprised on how much new systems were running now a days. Man these things are expensive. Was looking around on Yelp one day for AC companies and ran across Smart Air. All 5 five star reviews so I decided to give him a call on a Friday morning. Other companies had already performed a load calc on my house so I already new more or less what size ac unit I needed I discussed with Jay over the phone what I wanted and he was able to cut me a great deal on a 16 seer 3 ton Trane unit with a two stage furnace and a variable speed blower. Jay was very knowledgeable about the different units and he explained to me exactly how each one would perform and the benefits of each. Later that same day he came over to my house and did his measurements and three days later on Monday his crew arrived to begin job. Jay talked me over everything that were going to install and he even showed me each model number of all the equipment he have ordered to make sure I knew that everything was correct. When my condo AC broke down, he told me what my options were and what he would do if he were me (I asked). The repairman, Jay, was super professional and nice. He was adamant about not tracking his boots in our house, told me every step of the way what he was doing and why, and was very easy to talk to. My repair ended up being very odd, a bad relay in the heater, and Jay was completely honest, even when it was difficult to figure out what was going on. He fixed the problem and charged us just for the actual repair and not for the time it took to track down this very odd problem (whoever installed the air handler decades ago mis-wired it and caused a one-of-a-kind problem when the relay went bad). Like a good mechanic, it's great to find someone you can trust to be honest and upfront with something that most of us don't understand well. I called Jay at Smart Air since we were in need of a full replacement of our condenser, coil, furnace etc. This was the third company I called (but the last) and while everybody told me they needed to come out and do an inspection before they could quote me, Jay told me the pricing right up front.. I called Thursday (6 days ago), got my pricing options. He came out the following day to do a quick walk through and explain the options. We're planning on moving in 5 years so wanted the cheapest option. Where other installers would have given the hard sell about getting a better unit, Jay was honest and told me that an Ameristar Unit would be fine over a 5 year span. He then called me and said trane didn't have the Ameristar, but would provide a trane for the same cost. They showed up on time, the team was very nice (and even petted our dog throughout the day), and finished ahead of schedule. No hidden fees, no funny business, just superb work and a top notch installation. I will be recommending Jay for any and all AC related jobs in the future. This is the second time I've had Jay work on our 1960s home, and the second time I've been exceptionally pleased with his work. I would recommend Smart Air to anyone based on their proficiency with and knowledge of all things HVAC, excellent communications skills, and their friendly and pleasant disposition. A month ago I chose to replace the aging fan motor in my house AC unit, as the bearings were going. Though I don't have much experience with HVAC systems I do have a background in electrical engineering from high school and figured "how difficult can it be?". As temperatures hit 100 degrees I noticed that the compressor was starting to run louder than I remembered, and when our bill came in I noticed that it was a little higher than what I would have expected based on last year's bill from the same time. I decided to call the professionals to have my unit checked out. Within minutes of arriving, Jay had diagnosed the issue; my wiring of the fan motor had been close, but not quite. With the motor running sub-optimally the compressor was heating up and thus having to work harder ro cool down, thus lowering the efficiency of the cooling we were getting and increasing the noise it was making. A few adjustments later, all of which were explained to me in a way I could understand and learn from, and the unit was already cooling down and running more smoothly. He also inspected a few other components I had some concerns about while we had the unit open, and I learned a lot from the short amount of time it took him to finish up his work. All in all an exceedingly pleasant experience, and at an incredibly reasonable rate. Again, I would heartily recommend Smart Air to anyone who needs some help with their HVAC system. Still a 5 star rating for this company! Will never look for another AC/heat company ever. This time I wanted my 3.5 year old system checked out because I thought the outside compressor was making a different noise. Laz was my service tech this time and he came out the same day I called for service. He listened to the compressor turn on and off and there was nothing wrong. He sent the recording to Jay and Jay confirmed the noises I was hearing were totally normal. The one thing Laz did was to install an AC hard start kit to save energy and help the compressor when it powered on. Great company! read more

This review is long overdue but hey...First we got a good price sometime in 2016, and then in 2018, the evaporate coil failed and I was worried about a large bill even with the manufacture's warranty (part only, labor is extra). Not only did Jay schedule quickly, he also managed to only charge me on the Freon lost since it leaked all out. They waived my labor since they installed the system little over a year ago. Extremely disappointed with my Smart Air experience. Our A/C wasn't cooling in July, so I used Yelp to find a company to call. Dealing with Smart Air initially was wonderful: they responded promptly, the technician was extremely polite and prompt. After conducting an inspection, the technician informed me that there was a leak that could not be repaired. He told me I had two options: refill the Freon to see how long it lasted and bide us some time to make a decision, or buy a new unit immediately. We didn't feel that we were in a financial place to buy a new unit, so we opted to refill the Freon. It's now October, and, as we anticipated, the Freon has run out. I decided to call a different company this time to give me a quote on replacing the unit. The technician from the new company told me I didn't need to replace the unit. He said that the leak was easy to find and in the most common place for leaks (evaporator coil), and would be able to fix it no problem. He said it was a common repair and there should be no reason the other company (Smart Air) couldn't have fixed it. In addition, I told him what we paid for Freon through Smart Air. He told me that was absolutely too high, and even though our Freon is completely empty now, it would cost 20% LESS to refill it with them. Extremely disappointed in Smart Air. read more
