Came on the recommendation of a good friend that this was the best coffee in town. Truly was not disappointed by the brew! Really delicious cappuccino with gorgeous foam art. Super clean, spaced out interior and a chill secluded courtyard that has plenty of seating and shade. Only detraction was the chocolate chip cookie (which honestly is more of a barometer for the likelihood of my return to a coffee shop than the actual coffee, I'm weird, I know)! It was hefty and solid as a rock with a dearth of chocolate. Regardless, I'll be back and will try some empanadas and drip coffee next time. Love the atmosphere (and that they serve wine and beer!) read more

I have been twice now and the first time just got two cold brews that were okay, not super memorable but did their job. Went back a second time with a friend from out of town and we got 3 drinks, one person got whole milk and two people needed non-dairy oat milk for allergy purposes. The drinks came out not labelled as to what the drinks even were so we had no idea who's was who's. We stood there for a bit until we finally caught the attention of a barista to clarify. She was fairly short with us and quickly identified them. We tried the drinks and think that ultimately all of them were made with oat milk. They also weren't the best flavors, one of the iced coffee drinks was supposed to have an extra shot of espresso but was very light in color and tasted really milky with minimal coffee flavor. read more

Going to Siphon coffee is like walking into chemistry class. The minute I saw a barista making coffee using one of those "Siphon" devices, I was amazed. The bottom glass portion lit up and bubbles started to form inside of it. I usually just make coffee by just pressing a button and walking away, but this is way cooler. The latte with regular milk here is very smooth. With a touch of simple sugar, it was the best latte I had. It had the right amount of foam, not too much bite from the natural bitterness, and perfect temperature. They tried to make a milk foam design on my cup, but the "fern" turned into fog with regular milk substitute. I just thought it was funny. Atmosphere here is awesome, but it's been different each time I came. The first time I arrived, the place was packed and I couldn't find a chair. Half the customers were reading or studying, while the other half were conversing. It was very loud and distracting. The second time I came here, almost 90 percent of the customers were studying and the place was conversationally quiet. Because of the inconsistency, I'm not sure if I should rate this place best for studying, or just hanging out. Your mileage may vary! read more

Before we even get to the coffee I have several atmospheric and procedural complaints. There are no parking spots in the tiny lot shared with other strip mall bizzes (and idjits parking there for grindr-date handies which add that nascent flavour to hastily arranged Montrose-area "coffee dates.") And with all the Neartown construction street parking has been nonexistent for years in the HSPVA zone between W. Alabama and Richmond. So over the course of years I attempted to go here numerous times as a twice-daily midpoint between downtown and Greenway only to find no parking. I suppose it was always an option to "ghost ride the whip" down Greeley with E-40 booming while I went in for muh coffee but that was likely not my best option in lieu of a place to safely stow The Dragon for 15 minutes. So far, the one time I have found a parking spot was minutes after they opened in the early morning and it was the last parking spot in their tiny lot, shared with several other businesses, on a major thoroughfare of the city. Related to that complaint is that this joint does not have a drive thru like one of the many sensible Starbuckses within a mere Uncle Rico's football toss in any given direction of here. This joint, sans drive thru, requires you to remove yourself from your air conditioned motorcar in peak summer to walk in, take care of bidness, and exeunt to a hot car since the parking lot is uncovered. If you got one of the iced drinks the heat of your summer baked car from an uncovered lot will claim the souls of all the ice before you are two blocks away. There is nothing sensible about this experience at all in a Houston summer lasting ten months of the year. This is a tiny cramped location mobbed up by hipsters with their facial piercings and other unsettling hipster aesthetics flying every which way in the summer breeze and through the maelstrom of funyun breath blowing hard across the hipster dotted landscape even at the forbidden hour of 8am where nothing nice happens besides your hangover being extra bitchy about what time of the day it is now that the sun is finally out of her closet, because all of the good men are either taken (and looking for a lil something-something on the side to feel alive according to April Rhodes) or giant balls of nuclear fusion in your sky hole. Ordering and paying is the least-extra part. Picking up the order is the nadir. In the ~ten minutes I was waiting no other orders were called out for pick up. So after ten minutes I thought it was just me. The person calling out the order was ready mumbled something and looked right at me, the only gentlesir standing there at the pick up line. It didn't sound like my name but I had been waiting a long time already. Turns out it was not my order after telling her, the person who I ordered from ten minutes ago, what my order was. I felt like I stood out more as a beautiful snowflake among the others. More waiting. Then my order was "ready" and the person remembered this was my order so she just let me know rather than doing a mumbling which was drowned out by the loudness of the filled store, with a line nearly out the door already. Because I can count [shows you my hands like a six month old] to this many, I told her the order was wrong and got out the gentlesir's receipt to show the number she thought was ready was actually less than the number I had paid for. To her credit she did not argue with me (or like Pizaro's on West Grey maintain in a yelp message that I can't read English, when I have screenshots of their webpage as #receipts of their offer they refused to honour) and she went back into the prep area to fix things right there without fuss. They have been open long enough (Billy K.'s review was from 2014 so they have been open even longer than I thought) I am not sure how charitable to be about them still working out their soft opening trouble spots. But not getting the right amount of things you ordered is a bit elementary. I don't like giving brownie points for not arguing with me; but I also don't want to argue about stupid things. But best put your location on if you think Return was a better film than Empire because holy war and the most holiest smiting is coming. The cold brew iced coffee was suitable and standard but not worth writing home about - I would not blink twice if this came from a Starbucks. To make a point about how the iced coffee was that Futurama-neutral (if I don't make it tell my wife I said hello) my favourite part of the experience was the fun new straw - paper straw! It is one of those environmentally friendly things. No more plastic, in the straw at least. A nice green touch to round out the experience. This joint is an alternative to Starbucks if that kind of thing gets your motor runnin' hot enough to overlook the other things. Your mileage may vary. But, if I had Martha J.'s recent experience with the kitten I would have given additional stars for the Charlie Kelly/Caturday motif. read more

God I miss this place! Literally every item we got here was so tasty and delicious. I ordered the chicken empanada and chorizo breakfast taco. The chicken empanada was flaky, savory, and so flavorful. The sweet sauce that came with it complimented the empanadas tanginess perfectly. The chorizo taco was just as delicious. The taco tortilla was light and wrapped the fluffy eggs, cheese and chorizo nicely. The employees were friendly and helpful. The siphon coffee (the item this place is known for) looked amazing, but we didn't indulge mainly because of the hefty price. read more

Something happened with the quality of the coffee where everything was just okay as opposed to uber tasty. The positives outside of the coffee haven't changed. It's a great place to hang out with friends and study by yourself. Yesterday, I had a group of about 6-7 with me and we had a blast as the chairs and coffee table are comfy. The desserts were fairly decent and tasty. The restrooms were definitely made with a woman in mind as there are all these extra toiletries for girls that you won't find elsewhere like hair products. However, the coffee... It wasn't foul, that wouldn't be fair, but it certainly is no longer exceptional. It's a great place to see and be seen, a fun trendy location, and who can say no to a pac man table? No one! However, their drip coffee was icky and the mocha I ordered from them seemed like one from McDonald's on a bad day. Everyone in my group seemed to have the same consensus. The coffee was just...okay. And if this was a dessert gallery or a McDonald's that would be fine. However, this is a coffee shop. There coffee can't be just fine. That's not good enough. I would like to think that this was just a bad night, but maybe it's because now that I've tasted other coffee haunts in the Houston area, I've come to realize this is just a pretty basic place. There's nothing wrong with that. There's just better coffee out there for you. Try it out, let me know if you think their coffee is full of win, because I'm just not buying the whole, "Best Coffee in Houston" plug anymore. read more

Overrated. The coffee shop is kind of cute with a few couches in the middle but no outlets near the couches. If you want outlets, you have to sit in hard seats, which what's the point in coming here? Why not just go to Agora or Tout Suite or somewhere better? Service was terrible and slow. They didn't have cold brew and so I had to get an iced americano. Except that they made everyone else's drinks first (including people who ordered after me) because they just went with what was on the screen. The woman who made my drink was rude and the americano sucked. She doesn't know how to use the espresso machine. It tasted terrible. This place sucked. read more

I find myself coming back time and again bc of the coffee and the seating area in the back. I love places with great vibes. I grew up in the country surrounded by pecan trees. The wooden seating area out back has pecan trees hovering over you keeping it shaded and cool when it's sunny. Or providing a getaway from the city but still has closeness to the downtown hustle and bustle. The fence out back makes you feel like you're in someone's back yard talkin/sharing with friends over a good cuppa. Now to the coffee. Some places they attract you with the sweetness. Some with the heavy/mild roast, etc. I'm still trying to figure out the coffee without asking or looking. I like them bc they are not so sweet. I'm new to coffee. I don't veer too far away from lattes. I had my first Chai latte here and now all will be based on this one. Christmas in a cup!! Sometimes I'm scared to try the food menu bc some coffee kitchens are too small for the menu they have. This place has a nice sized kitchen. I will be back sooner than they think! Lol!! read more

Nice alternative to the coffee shops I'm used to frequenting. It's definitely modern inside and has ample seating. Some of the chairs are comfy soft leather while some others have cowhide backing. The high top tables are made of a thin slab of really nice wood, but the stools are made of steel. I came late on a Sunday and the parking lot was nearly full, so that's a good sign. I went with the almond milk latte and it hit the spot. Although the latte art wasn't great, that has nothing to do with the taste. They had stainless steel cups for ice water on the accoutrement table to your left after you get done paying. For some reason, drinks taste so good when they're in a stainless steel cup! I didn't sample any of the homemade baked goods since many were sold out by the time I came, selection wasn't great and I was still full from dinner, but the ones they did have looked delicious. read more

Ambient wise, this has just become my favorite coffee shop to go to for work (and catching up w a friend or two) or just to chill with a good book. The cafe is showered with amazing natural lighting from the outside. There're stand-up/bar-desks along the floor-to-ceiling windows, which were unfortunately all taken up when I was there. But, fortunately, there were plenty of nice seatings to pick from. There's even a side patio that seemed to have fallen out of an instagram post. With this ungodly humidity that I'm still trying to get used to, though, I'll have to save this sweet spot for later. I went on a weekday evening (4pm-ish), and there seemed to be a constant stream of customers coming and going, though I had no problem finding a table. It did become more noisy as dinner time neared and, as I found out, they serve actual food. My cappuccino was just standard, a bit on the coarse side, not likely to get it again when I return. But I shall return. read more

There's not an abundance of parking in front, so I had to park around the corner and down the street. The walk back is pretty worth it though especially if you pay an additional $1 on your drip coffee to get unlimited refills so you can stay for a few hours. It's pretty dang good coffee and there are plenty of seats/outlets for you to want to stay long. I think my empanada was more expensive than the coffee. Not sure because there weren't posted prices on the items in the glass display, but it was yummy and the green sauce was everything. I probably would have put my dollars towards trying out the siphon coffee though had I know what the total was going to be. read more

Since working from home, I've been searching for a place that I can treat myself and have some human/social interaction outside of my apartment at least once a week. Siphon is the place I pick every week! Great quality coffee, friendly and playful staff and a busy enough vibe to feel energy, while people are still respectful of others trying to study/get work done. I switch up my drink order a lot, but for food, you can't go wrong with the grande breakfast taco or vegan trio of tacos. Always get the green salsa - it's the best! Siphon can get a bit crowded at times, but I just take the "first come first serve" approach in regard to tables and give the place kudos for keeping a consistent flow of customers! read more

Siphon coffee is the perfect place for a productive afternoon of studying. Their housemade syrups make a real noticeable difference in the quality of their lattes. Cool little coffee shop with an interesting gimmick of using Breaking Bad technology to make their coffee. It seems like a great place to read or get work done as well as socialize which is hard to do since a lot of places are either one or the other. They also have a parking lot which is rare these days and appreciated. They also have a great tea selection and bring you your full leaf tea in a tea press so you feel all fancy. The only problem with that is that you have to drink it fast before it gets over steeped and bitter. Prices? Well, gimmi I mean concepts aren't cheap. That bubbling fancy chemistry set isn't going to pay for itself so don't expect to spend less than 10 bucks for two people. Still, I think they have succeeded in creating a coffee shop that's intimate and fun enough to use socially and Starbucksy enough to just go by yourself to read and study. That's not easy. read more

Siphon is a fabulous Houston coffeeshop and I highly recommend to anyone looking to get coffee, breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner with wine! I was a regular at Siphon before the world changed in March. Since then I've done takeout or delivery but I've been nervous to dine in anywhere. However with medical school exams coming up, I was getting desperate to find a study spot somewhere besides my apartment. And that's when I remembered the beautiful outdoor area at Siphon. So, a friend and I set up shop at Siphon and got a ton of work done! Service is always super friendly and speedy. I had a fantastic vanilla latte with oat milk and a breakfast taco that was delicious. The patio is gorgeous and they've added even more seating that is spaced out nicely. The one thing to note is that there aren't outlets outside so it's hard to really camp out and grind schoolwork. read more

The quiche and espresso were great and moreover the staff were super sweet. I'm just not sure what's up with this place. The atmosphere is great. When they get your drink right (which is rare) it's good. I've been going here for years and every two weeks it seems, they're training new employees. Overwhelmed, they struggle with the register, the ordering system, getting the orders in correctly etc. They're also really, really slow. And I think their attitudes is probably crummy because they're stressed out. Just a guess.
