I hesitate to give this review because there were many positives to my experience with Simply Moving. Because of these positives, I would still recommend using this company. But I also think that the plethora of five star reviews don't tell the whole story. So, let me start with the pros, and then explain why I have strayed from other reviewers and have given them less than five stars.
Pros:
First, dealing with the front office was an easy, professional, and pleasant experience. The woman who was my contact there was responsive, and extremely courteous over the phone. Also, you can tell they have a good operation going, as they send you a detailed price sheet that confirms the quote, lays out their policies, and confirms the moving schedule. The price I was quoted was far, far below other companies in NYC. I thought perhaps it was too good to be true. I've heard horror stories from friends that involved either careless packing, lost or damaged articles, or final bills that were much higher than the original quote. This wasn't the case here. I was charged what I was quoted, the movers were on time, and were pretty careful with my belongings, minus a few scratches that I can live with. For the cost alone, I would - and still do - recommend Simply Moving to anyone looking for an economical, efficient, and professional move.
Con(s):
I had one specific, unpleasant experience with the moving crew. Prior to the move date, I confirmed verbally with the office staff over the phone (and also read in their printed agreement) that the suggested gratuity is 15-20% of the total move price, which covers the whole crew. I had a simple job: moving a one bedroom apartment from one neighborhood in NYC to another. I am a generous tipper, and intended to give a bit over the 20%, particularly because it was a hot day. However, when the crew showed up, literally the first thing they said to me after hello was, that they expected me to give them "$x" per person and, if I did that, THEN they'd take "really good care of my stuff." What they were asking for amounted to almost 50% of the cost of my move -- well over the 20% suggested gratuity. Taken aback, I asked: well, if I don't tip you "x," will you then NOT take care of my stuff? They laughed it off, and said no, of course they would. At the end of the move, I DO think they took care of me. So, I gave them more than 20%, but less than what they requested. I looked them straight in the eye when I gave them their tip, and explained that I felt it was unprofessional to try and intimidate me into giving a higher tip, especially when it goes against the company's own policy. They took it relatively graciously, but also accused me for "not looking out" for them.
The thing is -- this isn't really the part that bothers me. I didn't like this interaction, but moving companies aren't perfect. The crew did a good job, and I feel that I compensated them proportionately. Maybe in the end there was some friction, but I also feel, in the end, our exchange was fair. There are two things that happened afterwards, for which have left me feeling uneasy about this company.
***First: at the end of my move, before the crew left, they put me on the phone with the owner, or perhaps it was the manager. He asked how my move was. I said overall it was good (I didn't mention the gratuity issue). He said that if I give a good review on Yelp, he will credit $25-$30 back to my credit card. So, I think this may be what is causing the consistently high reviews on here. I thought long and hard before leaving this review, and decided that an extra $25 just isn't worth it to me. Maybe everyone else who has left a five star review really did have an amazing experience, and maybe I was the only one who ever received this offer for money in exchange for a review. I dunno. But, I didn't have a five star experience, so I'm not going to say that I did.
***Second: after my move, I received an email from the company, asking for feedback. I wasn't going to bring up the gratuity thing, but I felt - since they asked - it was important that they know what their crew is doing out in the field. I wrote them an extremely detailed email about what happened, including some other issues that I didn't fully explain here. After a week of no response, I wrote a follow-up, asking if they received my email. They wrote back saying they were looking into it, and would get back to me on Monday. But, that was about a month ago. I also sent them another follow up email since then, pointing out that they never responded. And ... nothing.
So, at the end of the day, I just feel that it's important to share my experience, and advise other consumers out there that perhaps the consistent five star reviews on here should be taken with a grain of salt. read more
