Scanio should rename their business to SCAM-io. Seriously I have never been so disappointed with movers in NYC having moved three times in the last 5 years. I took on this company based on an amazing recommendation...and after talking to the salesperson Tony, he convinced me to go with them - good rate (decently priced, professionalism, and timing). i won't even get into the hypes as there are so few - but gripes - i have plenty: my GRIPES with SCAM-io: 1. They didn't come to do a walk through to see what all we had - and gave us a quote of 1500 dollars for the entire move ( we had a 2 bed 1.5 bath) 2. the quote was 1500 dollars but they ended up charging us MORE THAN 3000. 3. There were HIDDEN CHARGES which we argued we were not told upfront - bc they couldn't finish packing all in time, they required to keep our stuff overnight and move us the next day - there was a $200 OVERNIGHT fee for this. 4. They said they were sending me 4 guys to pack - they sent only 3 the days of. The guys did an OK job packing but WASTED a lot of material that didn't need it (used unnecessary amounts of paper to double wrap things that weren't delicate or needed it), picture boxes for things that weren't glass or fine paintings). 5. we were charged $800 in PACKING MATERiALS - like boxes and paper (note: most of the boxes were not full to the brim and paper was double wrapped as I discovered when unpacking) 6. TRAVEL FEE: like WTH is this. They charged us 100 dollars for a "travel fee" of the time it took to pick up their truck from their place to come to our apartment, and another 100 for the way back. So for two days that was another BOGUS $400 charge. 7. and in the end we had to get SCAM-io'ed and pay them bc they refused to deliver our stuff unless we paid them in CASH before they delivered. We used Scanio for our move from a large apartment in Soho to an apartment of equivalent size in a high end apartment in midtown with very strict moving requirements. It was a four day move, two to move out and two to move in. We had a crew of five, with six for the last day. They were terrific. Nice, professional, prompt, efficient. Our foreman, Max, was very easy to work with. They were not the least expensive of the movers from whom we received estimates, but we felt the end result was well worth the additional cost. I used Scanio to move from NJ to Manhattan in mid August. My first call with them was straightforward - we scheduled a video call walkthrough of all the things I'll be moving, things I would need disassembled, clothes for their wardrobe boxes, etc. After accepting the quote (Just short of $2.5k, estimated mostly by the # of floors they had to climb) and putting a down payment of $200, we got everything confirmed / got the certificate of insurance worked out. We had initially scheduled to start the move on a Friday at 9AM, but we were able to get them there earlier. Day of the move, Isma, the foreman, introduced himself and his team to me. They were rather straightforward and efficient. I had already packed most of my things, and most of their time spend was on furniture disassembly and packing. It took a few hours, and another hour for them to arrive at my new apartment - they began moving things immediately. They kept their cool despite it being a really hot summer day. We faced a few hiccups of fitting furniture through the door, but they were flexible to help disassemble things further and rebuild it back inside. The only issue that came out of it was I realized apack of gatorade I had with me didn't make it to the apartment - but I'll give the crew the benefit of the doubt there, I think they needed it way more than I did. read more

Beware! I have used a few moving companies in the past, but wow these guys were so bad. They told me it would cost $2k and it was almost double. Then they charged me for 4 hours of driving and lunch time which they said was common. What's most painful is that they didnt give me the new estimate until all my furniture was already loaded in their truck. So they had all the power. I'd really be careful with these guys. BEWARE OF MOVERS FROM HELL!!!! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT USE SCANIO!!!!!!!!!!!! They are truly the movers from hell! I have been through many moves and I have never dealt with such an unprofessional, greedy company as Scanio. They have zero customer relations, they treat their customers so poorly and it is all about money to them. They do not care at all about working with their customers and making them happy. I truly regret using them. I did a cross country move with them from New York to California. Everything that I did not want them to do, they did. First of all, they did not deliver our stuff when they said they would. They delivered many days later than they had said and we found out this was because their truck driver had gotten a ticket. They never even called us to say when they would deliver or if they have started driving our stuff over yet or what. How comforting to not know what is going on with everything you own! Once they finally delivered our stuff after forcing us to sleep on the ground for 6 days, our boxes came severely damaged. The boxes are all crushed and I'm sure everything inside of them is damaged. I do not see one box that is not ripped or crushed. Our antique couches are all ripped and the boxes I have opened all have damaged items in them. I was horrified to see they had shuttled our boxes into a different truck than what they had originally packed them in. They were now inside of an Atlas truck. If we wanted to use Atlas we would have hired them. So then we see the truck and our boxes are mixed with other peoples boxes. It was all a huge mess. The movers kept bringing other peoples items into our home and we would have to tell them this is not ours. I don't even want to know how much of my stuff has gone to other people. They had originally said if they were going to share our truck with another person's move, they would put a divider between our stuff and theirs. This was not true. All the boxes were mixed and it was like a free for all. During the part where they moved our stuff out of our apartment and into the truck, the workers were very obnoxious and demanded a tip. Are they serious? I have never had someone demand a tip from me before. They wanted hundreds of dollars each even though they had charged us over $11,000 for the move! The worst part was dealing with their owner Neer (sp?) and dispatcher Colin. These people were incredibly rude and had no sense of customer service. All they cared about is money. They were not willing to work with us one bit and were extremely unprofessional. Their attitudes were just plain nasty. If I wanted to deal with nasty attitudes, I should not have had to pay over $11,000 for it! After all the horrible stuff they did to us, they should have been apologizing and not talking back and name calling. Please do yourself a favor and do not use them. We regret not doing our move with Flat Rate. I am sure the 5 postive reviews written about Scanio are written by the owner and employees or relatives. I'm still very traumatized by my recent cross country move. After getting estimates from several moving company I chose Scanio movers even though their price was a little more than the other movers. I thought by choosing a small company my move would go much smoother. They proved me so wrong. My things got delivered to me way after the date I had asked them to deliver. Then for three days they kept changing the date to the next day and when my stuff arrived their condition was so bad that I was horrified. Many items were broken and after I unpacked everything I realized that I'm missing at least 8 boxes. I'm not surprise with this end result because on the day of delivery I was offered many boxes and furniture which were not mine. I did call Scanio's office to tell them what was happening and I was very upset by the condition in which everything had arrived. Collin the dispatcher said he was sure that's not true and I'm exaggerating the situation. When I asked Collin to send me a claims form he told me I had signed for all the items as having arrived in good condition and everything was intact. I guess showing the driver the broken items and the poor condition of the boxes meant nothing. I guess Collin expected me to hold off signing for 30 days so I can unpack everything. What a joke this company is! When I asked the driver why my pieces were broken all he had to say was that they just dropped the pieces and they broke and for the condition of the boxes he said it was because they had to be moved so many times. Apparently the truck had been stopped at the weight station for being too heavy. For this to have happened was beyond me, I had told Nir the company owner that I had 35000 pounds of stuff when I had moved last time and apparently he thought that a joke and he had gone and filled up the truck with 700 pounds more. I hope the judge really fined Nir well. At the end of the day I shall put this cross country move as one of my worst moves ever. I have moved every 2 or 3 years for the last 25 years and nothing has ever compared to this company. Not only they did break many of my ceramics, my work equipment , they also damaged my mattress, dining table, and 2 chairs, an armchair plus they lost a set of shelving and my 8 boxes of containing personal items like my pillow and down comforter, my pots and pans, my hair colors and many more personal items. I believe if this company was not so greedy and cared for what they were moving and they went and learned manners from the ones who packed and unpacked the truck and learned to apologize for their mistakes then perhaps I would say they were inexperienced and that is why they conducted their business so poorly. read more

Scanio is your worst nightmare. We trusted them with heirloom antique furniture. They delivered it months late and somehow "lost" the beautiful china cabinet. After weeks they "found" the cabinet and delivered it in 1000 pieces to our doorstep. While wheeling the crate to our door the mover noted "I can hear broken glass" and refused to open the crate because he didn't want to deal with the mess. I didn't even receive an apology and I'm still waiting on the $160 reimbursement cheque for this former family heirloom. read more

Moving into the city I had a unique situation: I had a small amount of items to move, but the building (at first) was requiring licensed, insured movers to bring my things in. Everywhere else I called could only do it if bundled with pack & load and transportation (which I did not need or want). Finally I found Scanio Moving through Yelp and gave them a call -- they were able to help me. Christine was excellent, answered my questions and was very friendly. She gave me a quote and even called to check up on me a few days later (again, this was a very small move and I would not be offended if I fell off their radar while I got things together on my end). Eventually I found the building would allow me to move my few items into my studio without movers, and I let Scanio know I would not need their services ... this time. When my lease is up in 12 months and I move to bigger and better things, Christine at Scanio will be my first call! read more

I was recommended Scanio by my real estate broker. From my first call into the company I was treated superbly. They initially helped me to thin out my apartment in preparation to show it for sale. That went very well and quite quickly, we moved on to talking about a full move out of the apartment building and across the country. Nir, the owner, came over and gave me a binding estimate including all packing goods, time, storage, taxes, etc. When the day came to pack up, Boris lead the team. They have an amazing attention to detail and amazingly seem to clean as they went along. My building's staff also commented on how polite and courteous the Scanio staff was to them. As we unpacked at our new home, box after box, we were continually amazed at how well everything was packed. We did not lose a single item or have any damage at all. Really the worst moving experience EVER!! "SCAMio" is right ... Nightmare!! I was moving only 3 blocks on the Upper West Side. Loading took 2 hours longer than they had estimated. When I mentioned this to them, they HELD MY STUFF HOSTAGE, and asked me to PAY UP RIGHT THEN. After an hour of arguing, calling the company multiple times, I finally had to run to an ATM, and pay them the entire amount in cash which was WAY over the estimate. And yes, I had to pay for the time that we were arguing as well :). Writing this review has been cathartic - I hope it helps reduce the nightmares from this experience. read more

Horrible! The price was about normal - around $650. The move itself was great. There were 3 guys and a foreman, as I expected. But when the time came to leave my old place and head for my new one, I was in the garden keeping the dog occupied and the movers just left without letting me know first. Just took off. So I had to rush out the door and schlep with the dog to the new apartment to beat them there. I noticed, on the way out, that they had not taken the shower curtain or bath mat. I realized later that moving such things is extra, but they should have warned me, as I certainly would have had them take them! What galls me most about Scanio, though, is that in spite of all this the foreman demanded a tip. They have you sign a form acknowledging that tips are extra, you should give what you think appropriate, and THE MOVERS SHOULD NEVER ASK YOU FOR A TIP. Needless to say I declined to comply. I discovered later that evening that a piece of furniture I intended to sell had been removed from the old apartment after I told the guys "the couch goes to the curb for bulk trash and the tv stand stays". In my haste to get to the new apartment I did not even notice that it was not in the old place. When I called Scanio the man I spoke with assured me that the foreman would be reprimanded for demanding a tip, but that "his guys would never steal a piece of furniture, there was nothing on the truck, they do what they are told", etc etc. He was getting quite defensive, in fact. While I may in fact have been wrong - I'll never know - it is incumbent upon any business to put the customer first and give him the benefit of the doubt. That they did not, and insisted I was wrong without any apology or attempt to appease me, speaks volumes. I will never use them again. read more

I would not use Scanio again. They chipped a custom made coffee table and even though I filled out appropriate paperwork, they never addressed it. I used them for storage and moving. And they chipped another marble coffee table. The moving super was aggressive and when I asked him, if I could buy him and the crew lunch, He said, No I will just take the money. They also lost a few boxes and when I attempted to review the inventory at the end of the move, I was told, he had to hurry to pick up his child. I was not happy. read more

This has been the best moving experience I've had in the 7 years I've lived in Manhattan. Yohai was great at coordinating everything and John, the gentleman managing the movers, was very competent and experienced. Of course, there were some snags along the way, and moving is ALWAYS a stressful process, but I felt that the additional money over some of the cheaper, flat rate movers was well worth it. They also have very reasonable storage prices - we currently have our things in storage as we were changing the floors in our apartment. I used Scanio Movers for a local move and had a great experience top to bottom. No breakage, no damage, no thugs. Quickly and carefully they wrapped all my furniture. They packed my kitchen breakables snug as a bug in a rug. They were about 10% more expensive than Schleppers or Flaterate but I had a couple of personal references that held weight for me. Scanio placed my belongings in storage for five years, and when I had them shipped to me, the items were returned moldy and broken. Even the Scanio movers who transported them from storage could not believe it and said to sue. Scanio refused to do anything about it - the president delayed addressing the issue and used excuses. I found them online and after reading some positive reviews I decided to have them come in for a free consultation. The representative that came was very nice and came on time, which I really appreciated - I had 2 other companies come in for estimates and one was over an hour late and the other never showed up. We scheduled a date for the move within the agreed upon fees and timeframe. The movers showed up on time and did an excellent job packing my valuables and carefully taking them down the stairs. Everything was done smoothly and professionally and there were no "hidden fees" or "surprises" of any kind - what we agreed on was the price I ended up paying. We used Scanio last year because the people we were buying our apt from on the UWS had used them to move out. They were extremely efficient, very careful with antiques and absolutely nothing was broken -- a true miracle! The only mishap was a lost key to an antique dresser which, after a few phone calls, they agreed to pay for a locksmith to take a mold of the lock and create a key. This was much appreciated. Apart from aggressively asking for a 20% tip (inclusive of tax) -- which we gave them -- we thought they were close to excellent and would use them again in a heartbeat. read more

DON'T USE SCANIO!!! I scheduled a moved with Scanio for 6/1/13 after receiving the recommendation from my broker, who is a trusted friend. My broker, who has provided me with excellent recommendations in the past, could not be more wrong about Scanio. He specifically told me that they weren't the cheapest movers out there, but that they were the best. Well, not only were they NOT the cheapest, they were NOT the best- more like the worst. They quoted me for a 5 hour move with 3 guys for 9:00 am on Friday. I told Yohai, the consultant that there was no way that they would need 5 hours to move me from my current apartment (420 sq ft and an elevator building) into my new apartment (550 sq ft w/ an elevator) that was literally around the corner- less than half a block a way. After all, they only had to move an armchair, small table w/ 4 seats, a bookshelf, dresser, side table and 15 boxes. I hired the "couch mechanic" to move my sectional sofa later in the day, so they wouldn't have to worry about that. I was estimating it would take more like three hours max, because that was the amount of time my last move took, and it was a second floor walk up all the way in Queens. Yohai insisted that he schedule me for five hours to err on the side of caution, fine. A day before the move, I called Yohai to see if he could come at 10 am rather then 9, because the super of my building informed me that trucks aren't allowed to park outside until 10 am and that they would be ticketed. Yohai said they had to come at 9, and not to worry about the tickets. Here is where things take a turn for the worst. The movers arrive at 9 am sharp, and immediately tell me that I will be responsible for any tickets they get. I call and leave a message for Yohai because that was contradictory to what he had told me the day prior. Next the foreman begins to bring my things downstairs solo. Not sure where the other two guys were- I didn't see them the entire time. While the foreman is waiting for the elevator to come back up, he proceeds to tell me how much I should tip him. COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. I have never seen a person move so damn slow, but I thought- be patient- when they get to the new apartment they will kick things into high gear. Well, I couldn't be more wrong. The movers left my box spring in my old apartment after they couldn't fit it down the stairs. I expressed to them that it had to fit down the stairs, after all, it fit up the stairs when I moved in. What goes up, must come down?! Not so much, according to them. When the 'Couch Mechanic' came two hours later to disassemble my couch, he (who is not a professional mover) had no problem getting my box spring down the stairs. Of course he charged me an extra hundred dollars for it. After taking the one minute walk from my old apartment to my new apartment, I was waiting outside for the moving truck for a good 15 minutes. Not sure what was taking them so long, I walked around the corner to find the foreman taking a smoke break. On my dime. Awesome. They proceeded to unload the truck, and it was if they were watching the clock to time things exactly to the 5 hour mark. I put my mom in charge of telling the movers where to put the furniture in the new apt, so I could go clean up at my old apt. The movers basically refused to put things where my mom asked, so her and I ended up spending an hour shifting things around after they left. When I contacted Yohai after the move to let him know my of my horrible experience, the snail-like pace that there movers displayed, the unprofessional behavior (telling me how much to tip and smoke break)- this is the response that I got: "I offered to send over some movers to help you organize the apartment, which was rejected. I spoke with my movers and they mentioned that they tried to take the box spring down the staircase, however did not succeed. Please advise how you want to proceed." Why on earth would I want help from their incompetent movers to help organize? Are you joking? Well, when I emailed Yohai back and cc'd my broker, he agreed to send me a check for $100.00 to reimburse me for the additional money I had to pay the couch mechanic. What about the 20% tip underserved tip that was demanded from your staff? What about taking 5 hours to move a 400 sq ft apartment around the corner? Bottom line, don't use Scanio. Unprofessional, expensive, slow, and incompetent. Never again. read more

In connection with a move, I donated my library, built up over 60 years, to Brooklyn College. Ricardo James and his crew came, packed up the books (254 boxes!), and transported them to BC. Their work was timely, efficient, careful and discreet. We got along splendidly and I signaled my satisfaction with a 20% tip to the crew. If I ever have to do this again - God help me! - Scanio will be my first call (actually I found them through In Order To Succeed, who essentially managed the move, and I triple-highly recommend them). read more

Worst experience! At first Yohai was great at customer service & quick at quotes etc. I had to move out of my place & wasn't sure I was staying in NYC so I opted for their storage. Once I settled on moving back to LA, I then discovered they use a "partner" to moves outside of the try state area. I purchased additional insurance as recommended for first move, storage & then final move. When my things finally arrived in la, most of my furniture & framed pieces were damaged. I actually tried to ask the movers to be more careful & they were flat out rude & said "don't tell us how to do our job" as they slammed down my eames shell chair on the concrete scraping the bottom gut that was just the beginning. Moving my $1,600 Blu dot drawers sideways & Armour with the doors on which I requested they be removed(I told them it would get damages & they didn't listen. They even fought me that there was a picture box that was missing and it turns out while they were supposed to carefully pack the art, they weren't properly packed & stuffed in a box that they surely would have driven away with if I didn't continue to challenge them. I called immediately to complain & was told it would be addressed. I filled out my claim form as directed & sent many pictures(which I hired them to pack). At first they said they would send someone out to assess. Then they changed their story & said they didn't have anyone in LA & couldn't send anyone & pics didn't show the damage. I am now faced with the hassle of taking them to small claims court(while I'm in. La & they are in NYC) as I have several pieces that a no longer functional & to replace I'm looking at min $4k with total damage over $6k. I would have said for a local move they be good but the fact that they didn't honor the insurance that I paid for & left me in a lurch, Id say that their business practices are shady & not worth the hassle. I moved two weeks ago to another apartment in Manhattan and Scanio handled my move superbly. They packed my stuff very professionally and quickly, moved everything out and into my new apartment and unpacked all the cartons and took them away. I did not expect them to put things away, but they put everything out so I could see it and reach it. The team headed up by Ricardo and consisting of Sekou, Allen, Rosland and Atiba were wonderful. Ricardo led the team and was the primary person doing the more complicated stuff. I was impressed by their skill, their team work and their willingness to do anything I requested to make my life easier. Incidentally, I had used them once before and the quality of their work was equally good, which is why I hired them again. I highly recommend them. read more

DO NOT USE SCANIO - they lied to us and their owners yelled at us and even THREATED to take us to court over the phone when they forced us to pay a fee we had never agreed on. After having used various moving services throughout my life, they were the worst I have ever experienced. We ended up paying double the agreed to amount, but it wasn't just the money that upset us. The rude attitude of the founder and their sales staff and the movers was unbelievable, and they all know they are a scam, because they included the word "BINDING" on an estimate sheet and forced us to pay an overestimated amount. Recently moved to a new apartment and the team from Scanio was awesome from start to finish. They showed up exactly on time and Herbert immediately took charge and started directing the rest of the crew (shout-outs to James, Kenny and DJ, all of whom were great). They were really careful, coordinated and efficient. They knew exactly how to package everything to prevent damage - especially the more fragile items. They particularly earned my praise bc my sofa is too big to fit in the elevator, so the guys carried it down a couple of flights of stairs to catch the freight elevator (which didn't come up to my floor). Over at the new apartment, the same situation happened where the sofa wouldn't fit the regular elevators - but the guys tracked down a separate service elevator that did the trick. Of course you still have to do your own packing and prep work in advance but once they show up, they do a really good job of taking the burden of moving off of you. I wouldn't call them cheap but with the level of service they provide and with how easy they are to work with, it makes the price easier to bare. read more

Living in New York City is trouble enough, but certainly when you are moving it is never a good idea to do it on your own. We recently moved into a 5th floor walk-up in Chelsea from our apartment in Clinton Hill Brooklyn and Scanio was a true delight to work with. They were on-time, the quote was exactly what we had discussed, and the mover's took the time to be sensitive to our belongings as the went from one location to the next. Additionally, they helped to get our Queen size bed up the spiraling flights and did so with ease -- and without complaint. I swear, I'd be less than happy if I was them.
