I was in the mood for seafood and found this restaurant on Google Maps. I didn't read a single review. This was by far the BEST meal I've had in a LONG time! I ordered a peach margarita, which had just the right blend of sweetness and strength. My main course was the Simar pasta with shrimp and Florentine sauce. It was SO decadent! I think the cook must have used a whole tub of butter! It was a huge portion, but I had skipped lunch and managed to finish it off. The service was spectacular. I don't know if I'll ever make it back to Austin, but if I do, I'm definitely going back! read more

Came here for my birthday lunch and everything was delicious! From the two salsas (the cucumber and the red one) with tostado chips served when we were seated to the entrees. I had the Burrita Vallarta (grilled spinach tortilla filled with shrimp, peppers, onions and cheese). I have never had spinach tortillas before. The burrito was amazing! This restaurant was a real surprise! We had never been to this restaurant. We decided to go based on it's proximity to my family's living quarters. My family called ahead to make sure they prepared non-dairy dishes and they said no problem. What a surprise brunch this was! The food is top notch and was obvious Chef Pedro was the real deal. The Scallops we're prepared with a non-dairy roasted bell pepper puree. The paella had plenty of seafood & chorizo in it. It was outstanding. We also ordered the flounder entree. It was also fabulous. We also had a small ceviche mix to try as an appetizer. It was my sister in law's birthday so the chef ordered a round of mix berries with Grand Marnier for everyone. Wow, what an unrecognized gem of a seafood restaurant! My wife and I visited Simar tonight for the first time (they've only been open a few months), and this place is not nearly as packed as it should be, given the quality of both the food and the experience. The fish is *very* fresh - it was clear that nothing we ate had ever been frozen, and the preparations were exceptional, too. There are several other seafood restaurants within just a couple of minutes of this one: Eddie V's and Truluck's in the Arboretum, and Plank in The Domain, among others, but Simar (located at Gateway) puts them all to shame for value. Plenty of classic dishes, but also lots of less usual stuff for the adventurous, including the largest variety of ceviches I've ever seen, as well as many excellent recipes from the Mexican coast. The salsa and the cucumber pico were perfect on a hot summer day, too. We started with their signature shrimp cocktail, which is quite good (not as good as Goode Co's in Houston, but then Goode's is the best there is...) We followed that up with the Filete Baja, a simple but excellent preparation that really showcases the seafood itself, so any lack of quality shows through. It was excellent, and my wife grew up on the Florida coast so she knows her fresh fish. Great service and bar drinks, too, and did I mention that it's really a killer value, especially compared to the other overpriced seafood you find in Austin? We're looking forward to another visit gain, soon, and thrilled both to try more things and to just have fresh seafood back on our dining-out menu. Simar *deserves* your business. If your experience is anything like ours, you will not be disappointed! (BTW, I rarely write Yelp restaurant reviews, but this place really made me want to share the good news. service was non existent- young lady took late comers orders before us and flirted with those men who arrived later than us. when we asked someone else to take the order the food never arrived we waited over an hour while 2 other tables who were men got their meals Before us. what I ordered they didn't have so I decided not to order but my friend ordered and never got her food we left the restaurant....we were then followed outside by the same waitress and she spent more time trying to collect the 5$ for the mineral water than she spent withus inside the restauran! never had I ever experienced this type of service when i visited 6 times before. Ordered the combo platter with steak, chicken, ribs, and steak. Steak was at best microwaved, chicken was rubber, ribs were dry, shrimp was good. One of the worst meals I have had served in a restaurant. They brought out another set of steak and chicken to compensate and the chicken was just as rubbery. read more

The food was phenomenal I also ordered ahi tuna as appetizer but ate it before I took a picture. My mouth was just watering watching all the dishes being brought out of the kitchen. They all looked so amazing. The staff was extremely friendly. They recognized my friend because she had stopped there like 2 or 3 weeks previously. I've been excited to try this place out because of the positive reviews. Finally made it over there with a friend the other day. Upon walking in, there is a glass case with fish laid out on ice. Hopefully this is just decoration and not supposed to be a reflection of the fish they serve because the fish skin was dried out and the eyes were sunken - clear indications that this fish is no longer fresh. I thought about calling it right there, but we had read all these reviews, so I decided to tell myself this is decoration and of course the fish in the kitchen looks way better. So how was the food? The chips and salsa were actually quite good, the drinks were fine, but the actual seafood dishes were just mediocre. We tried a handful of items including (boldly after seeing their old fish on display) one of the ceviche dishes. All of it was just okay. Not good, by any generous stretch of the definition. Definitely nothing I would ever bother to eat again. But the cherry on top of it all - the mariachi music. It's not a huge place and of course it has hard floors since it's a restaurant. The music is so ridiculously loud, we couldn't even have a conversation despite trying to shout at each other across a small table. I have absolutely no idea what the positive reviews are talking about, but let me prep you if you also fall for them - old fish on display, mediocre food, and music so loud you won't be able to talk to your dining companions. read more

Walked into the restaurant today because it has such great reviews. We were so excited to try it! Unfortunately the second we walked in the front door there was a horrible sewage stench throughout the entire place. We sat down for less than 30 seconds and had to leave. It smelled like a bad "plumbing" or cleanliness issue which is definitely something to be avoided at a seafood restaurant. Too bad as the pictures of their food do look good. read more

It is a big and very friendly restaurant. Servers are extremely nice and fast. The plates are big beautifully put together. My Paloma was very refreshing and not too strong. They bring to the table some saltines, tortilla, some fish soup as well. I passed on all as I was super excited to have the octopus which I love. My husband said the food was good, but the flounder was missing some salt. The shrimp on his account was just perfect. Tender, yet not chewy. Some acidity from the lime and perfectly salted. For my octopus, I first had a bite of the corn tortilla which was very flavorful. Crispy, filled with black beans and some cheese. The rice was very soft, to the extreme side, but the flavors bonded in pretty well. We could taste the bell peppers and all the spices. The octopus was a huge letdown, though. It was a very decent piece, but I couldn't eat much of it. It seems that there was still too much skin left out and the suckers were pretty tough although the flesh inside was very tender. read more

We had been to Simar twice with very good experience and delicious food. We took friends with us a few weeks ago and it was terrible. We had a server that couldn't speak English well. We ordered a salad and asked for dressing on the side. It didn't come until our entree had already been served and it was heavily dressed. Our waitress had no idea what we were saying when we tried to tell her we wanted dressing on the side. My husband ordered the surf & turf. His shrimp were very good, but the meat was so full of gristle that it was inedible. I tried to contact the restaurant, but it went to the marketing department and I never heard from anyone actually at the restaurant. All that aside, we thought we'd try again. Perhaps the last time was an aberration. We tried again for the salad with dressing on the side. And again, it came out with dressing on the salad, plus more dressing on the side. Our waitress knew she didn't understand and she got someone who could understand better. That person took the salad back, but immediately brought our food. We got so fed up, we just left. We went across the parking lot and had a great sushi dinner instead. They have now lost our business for good. I was greeted by real friendly and caring staff Tony even the Chef Pedro came to my table and we talked about his fine menu. The food was so delicious! Everything there is presented so beautifully and so pleasing to both the eye and palate. I will most definitely be back for sure. I can't remember where I ever got such wonderful service, and food and really felt like a Queen! If you like seafood, you'll love this place & the apparently Spanish (as opposed to the Mexican we're used to) cuisine.
