I had a wonderful early lunch at Freda's with a friend on a recent weekday. We arrived around 11:30 am and left around 1 pm. During that time, only a few tables were filled. I certainly hope they got more customers later in the day, because (based on my limited experience) the food, service, and atmosphere are all great. Freda's has been around for about 25 years. Longevity like that is earned. We opted to order from the lunch menu, which has enough choices to suit most people. I got the trout and shrimp ($19), which was nicely plated over seasoned rice and green beans. The lemon/butter/caper sauce was scrumptious. The trout was lightly breaded and crispy, and the shrimp (while slightly overcooked) were very tasty. The green beans were fresh and perfectly cooked. The overall portion size was just right. Before the meal arrived, a wonderful warm homemade cornbread was served with whipped butter. Service was excellent, and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The interior of the restaurant is on the dark side. There's a separate bar area, and outdoor seating is available in better weather. I look forward to my next visit to Freda's! read more

Had a good meal at Freda's! We'd come back for a nice evening. The meal was a bit more expensive than we'd hoped for and at times felt like some of the items ordered didn't meet the expectation. The surf and turf was solid. 5/5. Medium rare steak, nice potato, big shrimp. Crawfish dishes were good too, but you could tell they weren't fresh. What do you expect when you order crawfish in February. However, the portion was good size and garlic bread was delicious. The miss of the evening was the gumbo. It was significantly thicker than usual and had large pieces of pepper in them. Didn't enjoy it for the price point. Service was friendly and advised nicely on what to do. read more

Freda's Steakhouse did not disappoint! My steak was cooked perfectly, juicy, flavorful, and exactly how I ordered it. The blue wedge salad was honestly the best I've ever had -- super fresh with the perfect amount of blue cheese. We paired everything with a great bottle of cab, which made the night even better. And the service was amazing , attentive, friendly, and made us feel really well taken care of. Such a great spot for a nice dinner. I'll definitely be back! read more

I find it hard to believe I have never posted a review of Freda's, given all the times we have been there. This time it was for lunch. Oysters on the half shell, Fried Catfish and Fish tacos. Yum. Oddly for a Saturday lunch ( little past 1230PM), it was not very crowded, which of course is neither here nor there. Friendly service, tasty food, and a relaxing time. We will be back. To start, we have passed by this for years and years, we live down the road but we never stop in. Finally we figured it was time for the former teen's BIRTHDAY meal. There was ample parking when we went, not crowded at all, mid day for us between lunch and dinner. The place is very nice, good lighting, great décor and lots of plants. The lighting is subdued and works well. We all started off with drinks, I got an old fashioned as it is becoming my drink of choice, Shana got a Mexican Martini, and M got a Mango martini then an expresso martini. All were very good. The cornbread they supply was amazing, just so so good. The former Teen and Shana got calamari with Marinara and Salsa Verde and they both loved it, not something I enjoy so I didn't try it. Shana got the Pecan Crusted Tilapia which was fantastic according to her. The former Teen got a shrimp and crawfish etouffee and raved about it. I got a shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo cup and then the shrimp and andouille sausage pasta. The gumbo was the chef's kiss, the roux was perfect. The pasta while still good was not as good as everything else in my opinion, I would have stuck to a larger Gumbo but wanted to try. If I had one complaint or something to work on, while the shrimp is plentiful as is the crawfish, the sausage is limited in both meals. I am more a sausage guy then shrimp and would have liked more of that, though the shrimp was good. The waitress was friendly, checked in without hovering, and answered all our questions. The food was mostly prompt, there was a slight delay on the French Bread we ordered which was a delight. We did get a bread pudding to go, so we ate that at home and it was tasty even not right out of the kitchen. While Shana and the FT loved it more then I did, it was still very good. It is a bit on the pricey side so be prepared for that, not outrageous but higher end so be mindful. It is a lovely place with good food and a fast staff. Due to pricing and location being easy to forget it won't be a regular but for a birthday or special event will we try to remember. read more

Freda's is a nice place to take a date or just chill out. It offers several different menu items. I personally like their raw oysters. It is one of my go to items when I come here and I usually get 1 dozen that I share with a friend or eat them all by myself. There are steaks, pasta and fish as well as soups and salads. I like going on a Friday or Saturday evening and hanging in the bar. They have a musician who plays the keyboard or sax. Very nice music to listen to. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and do their best to ensure you are taken care of. I would like to give a shout out to Nicole. I've had the pleasure or her being my server and couple of times. I can only say she is awesome! read more

My family hosted a75th birthday party for me this week. I don't think there are enough words to express what an awesome time we had ! From planning the party with Lee, the party coordinator there, to the absolutely wonderful meal and servers was beyond our expectations. Everyone was giving more than 100% to the comfort and care and provision for me and my party. The food was served hot and delicious. Everyone in the party had nothing but nice things to say. Wow! It's been several years since we've dined at Freda's and decided to return for their Easter brunch buffet which sounded reasonable. Arrived for 10:30 reservation, we're seated and headed to their buffet which included a carving station of brisket, sausage and ham. A variety of breakfast items from eggs, bacon, sausage patties, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, seafood pasta, salmon, tilapia, fried catfish, peel n eat shrimp, fried shrimp, desserts consisted of fresh fruit, parfaits, mini cheesecake bites, mini beignets etc. Majority of "hot" items were not at health code regulated temperatures, not fresh, very dry brisket, sausage casing was so rubbery and difficult to chew, most items lacked creativity and flavor. Fried shrimp was overcooked and appeared frozen, not fresh. Desserts also seemed like a frozen brand, not made in-house. A very disappointing experience since a lot of time had passed since our last visit. The only thing we enjoyed was the mimosa special, $10 and our waitstaff! Based on this visit, I don't think we'd be interested in returning, sorry. read more

Y'all! I considered Freda's a hidden gem, off the main path. I've only dined here for dinner anout 5 times but The service has always been friendly. The food has always been delicious. My goal is to come for the buffet on the weekend. I hear it is top tier. Gotta get me some of that. Don't forget to get the complimentary bread and butter when it comes fresh out of the oven. I really like the ambiance at Freda's its low lit lights makes it romantic.I have been for brunch and enjoyed the bread pudding and combination of different dishes, well worth the price. We went recently for a birthday dinner and the dishes were lacking. The fried catfish is not traditional cornmeal fried, it's done with panko crumbs and lacked seasoning. The etoufee sauce was good but the shrimp and crawfish had no flavor, without the sauce it was a flop. Now the Sword Fish and mushroom risotto was amazing! They should add it to the menu as a regular item. The cream sauce adds a little flare and that risotto makes it razzle dazzle. All together I think it was just a miss on the etoufee but for the price it shouldn't be a miss. read more

The crab cake was phenomenal, one of the best I've had in a while. The jalapeno adds a nice and unique kick to this classic. A great heaping portion as well. Something I would get on every visit back if I have the chance. I was looking forward to trying the rainbow trout Alexander but unfortunately they had run out of rainbow trout that day. The chef came out and expressed his regret and was so kind about the whole situation, totally did not need to do that but such a thoughtful gesture. Instead I had the salmon Alexander and stumbled into a really amazing dish. The salmon was cooked really nicely, the crab topping was extraordinary, and the pesto rice which I've never heard of before was awesome. The setting here is a nice dinner out, perfect for a date or family celebration. The bar is quite large and separated from the dining room. I could see it being a great bar to have a drink. I have come here a few times whenever I'm in town to see family. This place really is great, always look forward to it. read more

Freda's Seafood grille is a hidden gem. In order to get to the restaurant you have to do a U-turn off Hwy 183. After entering the large wooden doors you were opened to a dimly lit restaurant that was akin to a speak easy. It had Louisana Creole styled menu and flavor. Luke, our waitor, immediately greeted us and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered the peach martini and tea. The peach martini had vodka with a peach liquer that floated in your mouth lite and airy. The tea was strong and flavorful. Luke did a good job looking after us. Next we experienced the appetizers, iceburg salad and gumbo with cornbread. The iceburg lettuce salad was draped with a thick piece of crisp pepper bacan with tomato and salad dressing...so yummy! OMG, the gumbo was the best I've ever tasted...an explosion of flavors in your mouth...large shrimp expertly cooked, anduille sausage (very uncommon for gumbo in Austin) and a rhue that want to make you slap your thigh. : ) Oh Yeah...the cornbread, the best I've eaten in Austin. The cornbread was a bit sweet, buttery and literally melted in your mouth. The cornbread had real pieces of corn inside. I am little ashamed to say we had two servings. All winners!!! Bring on the entrees...coconut shrimp and catfish and crab stuffed salmon. The portions were large....enough for two people to eat one meal. The catfish was lightly battered with big pieces of catfish and the shrimp was delicious. We both packed up half our meals to go. At this point, I'm too full to eat another bite...so I thought. We were celebrating a birthday and Freda's provided a complementary Creme Brulee dessert. I'm not a fan of Creme Brulee generally, however, this one was different. The only negative thing I have to say is that the order taker is either not listening or forgetting when you ask for additional sauces for your food. It happened again today. Homemade Butter I really love the cornbread. It's not sugary like most, so you can actually taste the flavors. They make the butter in-house too. The entrees have a Cajun flair, so expect stuff like Étouffée poured over blackened catfish. read more

does anybody ever think to themselves "i'm too picky"???? i fear this may be the case for me im VERY picky with seafood and i have high standards but even just the brussel sprouts dish was so weird to me--sweet chili sauce lifted straight out of the bottle in the asian aisle of a kroger or from the little packets at the chinese takeout store, balsamic glaze on Top of that somehow, and then cotija cheese crumbles... Delicious food, amazing service, great ambiance. It's been awhile since we've been here, but tonight was no exception. Nicole was the PERFECT server. So friendly, professional, just attentive enough without being annoying, anticipating needs just as they arose. The scallops were melt in your mouth scrumptious, and my hubs loved the Cajun Pasta. Ate here tonight for my first time and all I can say is get here fast if you want good seafood in Central Texas. The atmosphere was amazing, the staff super friendly and helpful, my waiter Rob was always around with a drink refill, awesome suggestions on food and just all around nice guy. I had the shrimp diablos appetizer- Best I have ever had, not sure if it was the shrimp or the remoulade sauce either way best ever. I had the Bourbon Street Pasta for dinner and it was great. We were there for New Year's Eve for our first ever visit. The restaurant is beautiful and tables well spaced. They were really busy with folks celebrating the coming new year. They had a special limited menu and it was pretty pricey, especially given the amount of food you get. I had the paella and it was basically seafood placed on top of the rice as opposed to most renderings of this dish elsewhere which is the seafood cooked with the rice. I was expecting to get some good flavor but it was fairly bland. My partner had the fried seafood plate. The serving on that fairly generous but again not well seasoned. The baked crab was tiny. I've never seen a baked crab that small. Our waiter was mostly absent, only coming to the table to bring us something we had to request. He never came by to ask if we needed anything so we had to ask the waiter for the nearby tables for assistance. His tables were getting excellent service. The experience was actually a two, but upping it up one for consideration of the crowd size. Still what was supposed to be a special night out was pretty underwhelming. read more

We went here for my brother in laws birthday. Everything we ate was so delicious. It is on the pricier side of restaurants but worth it. Everything tasted fresh and perfectly cooked/fried. Service: Top notch & attentive. We were a big party, but handled with grace. You could tell the waiters supported each other nicely. Been to Freda's many times since it's in my area but this time disappointed. Why does one have to ask for the complimentary cornbread? Why don't they just offer it? The Rockefeller oysters tasted raw underneath the spinach topping. Out of 6 could only eat two. They've been so good in the past. Most importantly, I was prepared to spend $$$ for the crab legs but when I asked if they cracked them to get started, I was told No. At other high level restaurants they OFFER to crack them. Because of this I didn't get crab legs and left spending far less than I would have. Their loss and disappointing for me. read more

It's New Year's Eve and decided to give this place a go. We made reservations for 7:00, got here 10 minutes early, and got seated around 7:20. Upon being seated we were asked what we wanted to drink. We both asked for a glass of the Riesling. We immediately got two empty wine glasses and two waters. The wine finally came out about 15 minutes later. We asked for lemon or lime for our water and initially just one wedge. We had to ask someone other than our waiter for more. Btw... I think we saw our waiter three times during this experience. I ordered the seafood platter which was supposed to include catfish, coconut shrimp, shrimp Diablo, and stuffed crab. First of all, it wasn't catfish but cod. Secondly, the stuffed crab was about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The flavor was good, but I expected a much larger crab considering the price of the platter. I came here for a work lunch and I was honestly a bit apprehensive to come to a seafood restaurant as a non-seafood eater, but I was pleasantly surprised. The menu items were easily customizable with chicken instead of seafood and my dish was delicious. There were about 15 of us and even so, the service was quick and efficient. I usually go to Fredas & only sit at the bar but today I decided to try out their Sunday brunch buffet & it was pretty good. I'd say it was a 6/10. So the food & service was good but they definitely don't replace anything until it is like allllll the way empty so that was kindve annoying to get the last bits when you're just getting there. I had to wait a little bit for everything to get back stocked up but when it was it was pretty good. Overall mid though idk if I would come back for it, my stomach was definitely hurting a little bit after this meal & I threw up! Went to celebrate my niece birthday and it was Amazing! We almost ordered everything on the menu! Our server acted a little intimidated by us like we were going to run out on the tab! Maybe because we ordered so much stuff! Me and my brother had old fashioned and we both agreed it was the best! Nice atmosphere. Great place for a date or family dining. And they also gave my niece a free crème brûlée. It looked it good but it was tasteless also. A little disappointing because it looked amazing. UPDATE: it seems there was a wildlife issue which caused them to close the patio for most of the day. I appreciate the prompt explanation. I seem to do everything I can to like this place. Asked for brunch on the patio but they said they weren't seating patio. Brunch was ok but not great. As we were leaving...seating on the patio. we would have spent twice (or more) to have relaxed on the patio for awhile. It's central Texas....open your patio every chance you can. read more

Hosted an event here for a group of ~40 people in December. They had a great "banquet" menu that included appetizers, choice of entree, and dessert for everyone at a great price. We used a private room and there was the perfect amount of space for our group, but if you have any more than 40 people it would definitely be tight. The service was great, there weren't any long lulls in between the courses coming out and the waiters were great at keeping drinks filled. read more

What a wonderful way to end the freeze! I had never been to Freda's and was looking forward to my dinner all week. Candy was on point from drinks to dessert. The food was delicious. I never thought I'd recommend a gluten free crab cake, but here I am: get it! Thank me later. I had the Chilean sea bass and my date had the stuffed red fish. Yum for both.
