A nice place to stop in to have some seafood prepared Mexican style. Simar has more to offer than just seafood, but their main focus is seafood. I ordered the "Spring Salad" with no protein and asked for vinegar and oil on the side. It was fresh with lots of avacado and a nice flavor. For my main entree I ordered the "Chili Relleno". It is a large chili pepper that was filled with cheese and shrimp. This was made with perfection. You could taste the shrimp with every bite. You get two sides and I chose the black beans and veggies. I really liked the veggies they really complimented the Chili Relleno. The black beans were very good too. I didn't really like their complementary chips. The salsa was good but the chips were average. I sat at the bar since I was dining alone. My servers Dave and Lee were terrific. They pampered me sharing stories and adding to my dining experience! The astetics is sat up like a seafood house with lots of tables. The lighting was good, not too dark but still plenty of light. The main thing was everything seemed clean. Thank you Simar and especially Dave and Lee for making for a great Friday evening.

This Mexican seafood restaurant is located in the Arborteum and slightly tucked away. It's a large restaurant with lots of seating and a kid's play area too. There is plenty of space for large parties as well. Service is helpful and friendly and the food came out quickly for us (the portions are pretty solid). We started with chips and salsa and a shrimp ceviche that really had a good tang (it is a good amount that could be shared by 4). From there we had a few hefty dishes: Grilled red snapper - just a half and not a whole! It came with some fried plantains and your pick of a side and salsa Grilled pulpo - a large order of octopus with choice of two sides Tacos De Res - three tacos dressed with two sides of your choice. The sweet potato, regular fries and grilled seasonal veggies were good sides and we enjoyed the entrees too. Would note that everything is prepared with a healthy dose of garlic.

Nice Mexican seafood that carries Modelo Negra on tap in the summer! All the food was pretty good. Although felt kind of small portioned for the price. The soup in the volcanic bowl had a really good tomato based broth. Outside the mussels and shrimp, the other shellfish were kind of small. Like the clams and scallops. Service was good, large and nice interior with a lot of seats available. I would like to come back and try the fish or octopus.

Trying to beat the heat I stopped in for happy hour on a Friday. The atmosphere takes you away from the Austin traffic and Texas heat. Suddenly it feels like you're in a beach town in Mexico, from the tropical margarita flavors to the fresh cucumber ceviche they bring out with chips. To top it off there is a cup of fish consume to drink out of an espresso cup. It is truly charming, the only thing missing is a beach. Next time I am returning with an appetite to try the ceviche tropical. The coconut margarita is fantastic, I would love to be sipping that out of a coconut someday.

Seafood Mexican style needs to be done well. Simar nailed it. The guac and shrimp appetizer was fantastic. Don't know if the jalapeños they came with were supposed to be hot or not. Those with our serving were nearly sweet but was a great taste combination. The server brought out an espresso cup size of seafood broth - delicious. The chips and salsa are full size corn tortillas with 2 types of salsa. For mains we had the Tres Amigos and the Shrimp Tacos. It was easy to feel transported to a beach in Mexico they were so good. The flavors are perfect. Bright and colorful. Open, bright and airy with good music that's not too loud. We will come back for the unlimited buffet! For dessert we elected to try the flan and the Tres Leche. The flan was a bit thick and doughy but tasty. The Tres Leche was very good perfectly made.

Wow! Walked into this stand alone restaurant at 5:30 to hit Happy Hour. I was the only person there! Why??? Great menu, easy to access location, clean, spacious, and GREAT service. Just because it was just me for awhile anyway, I was treated like a long standing regular. Very welcoming. My friend showed up and we were treated to small cup of warm shrimp veloute. Delicious!! Hot chili sauce dip, cucumber pico de gallo and salsa followed with warm crunchy tortillas for dipping. We had ordered drinks and they were so delicious we ordered the same again! Mexican Martini and a Tamarind Smoky Old Fashioned ...I asked for it shaken and up....Mmm Dinner was fresh, delicious, pretty and well prepared. This is a sleeper that people need to get on board and check out!!

We stopped by Simar Seafood Cocina right at 5:30 on a Wednesday to catch the tail end of happy hour, and overall had a great experience; though it has been one of our more expensive date nights. From the happy hour menu, we ordered one chicken taco and one asada taco. Both were fantastic! great flavors, perfectly cooked, but it's worth noting it was literally just one taco each. Definitely more of a snack than a meal. We also got six oysters at $2 each, which were solid but didn't quite have the briny freshness you get from Whole Foods' oyster bar. Still, tasty and well presented. The mahi-mahi ceviche was a highlight. Super generous with the fish and the veggie-to-fish ratio was spot on. You're definitely getting a hearty portion there. The calamari appetizer was good, not mind-blowing, but it did its job and worked well as a shareable plate to start with. We grabbed a beer from the happy hour list and a mixed drink from the regular menu. All said and done, the bill came to around $75. That felt a little steep given that half our order was off the happy hour menu, which is why I'm knocking off a star. That said, the service was excellent, it was attentive, friendly, and made us feel welcome. All in all, Simar has a cool vibe, solid seafood, and is worth revisiting for happy hour, just maybe don't expect a budget night out. I also think that when we come back, I would like to try some of the other items on the menu as I've noticed that a lot of the five star reviews were about the foods that we did not order.

Not sure what to say about this place it would have much more potential, the sea food was not that great, we ordered the civeche 2 kinds and to be honest it was not fresh at all. The ambiance was nice and fresh, the service was meh, margaritas was good!

The decor was so pretty and spacious! We went on a Sunday morning and it wasn't busy at all. They also have a kid play area near the outdoor dining. There was only one waitress, but she was really helpful and attentive. She was really knowledgeable about the menu items and answered all our questions. The food did not disappoint. The chips and salsa was so good. We even asked for extra salsa. The little cup of Caldo Simar was also good. It was just a broth. For the starter we order the shrimp ceviche called Ceviche Azteca. It was very spicy even with the side of fried tortillas and crackers. Ceviche Azteca ($18) includes: shrimp, lime, soy sauce, sesame seeds, pico de gallo, and cucumber We also ordered the Tacos Nayarit ($17). This included three fried or grilled tilapia fish tacos with cheese, topped with pickles onions, carrots, and red cabbage. It also comes with a scoop of rice and beans. The food was delicious and fresh.

Staff bringing out this amazing seafood display of some of their menu items. It reminded me of a luau but Mexican style.

This is an amazing restaurant with welcoming staff and awesome menu. I can hear for a Yelp event and was fortunate to sample some of their seafood and other food and drinks. It's very spacious and tastefully designed. The staff is quick and friendly and everything I sampled was delicious. I was greeted by a margarita and was able to also sample a few other drinks from the bar. The ceviche was tasty as well as the oysters. The tacos were yummy as well as the shrimp and red snapper. The tres leches looked amazing but quickly ran out by the time I got through the line. I did sample the flan which was tasty and the yogurt which is something I'd have for breakfast but it was very good. It's located in a huge shopping center. So finding it was a challenge but it does stand alone near the access road. I just needed to wind my way to the back of the center as I wasn't coming up from that access road. There is a driveway you can enter if you're in the far right lane and know it's there. This is a great place for a party or to bring the family or come for a date. It's really a fabulous place.

I must admit as much as I drive on 183, I have never noticed this place. We'll I'm glad I do now, I have never had the appetizers we were served and I must say everything was delicious the fish Tacos are to die for I loved the engagement among everyone the staff were amazing I will be back this place is a diamond in the cut . The steak knife that came with my steamed red snapper was a red flag. Who needs a knife to eat fish, never mind a steak knife? As it turns out, I did. The fish was so tough/dried out, it was inedible. The waitress asked if I wanted to send it back and get a replacement. I declined. They did take it off my bill which is why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. My wife liked her shrimp dish, but she said it wasn't anything special. Really disappointed as it is close to our house. read more

Really close to getting that 5th star. We stopped in Friday night to have an early dinner. Service was a bit slow although everyone was very helpful and pleasant. Our food was great and we both enjoyed our drinks. Ambience was decent - it seems like they're working out a couple kinks since the lights were suddenly turned down a couple of times while we were dining. We'll definitely be back. If service is a little more prompt (and our food & drinks are at least as good), I could see them earning a 5th star and a spot on our regular restaurant rotation. read more

This place is fantastic! They were so friendly and you could tell they put a lot of heart in their work. The food and drinks were all delicious and the portions were large and gorgeous with lovely adorning details. I really appreciated the live music in front of the cozy fireplace too. Thanks for supporting our musicians! The only ding comes from the very harsh lighting. Please turn down the cafeteria-like lights. I almost took off a star for it, but it's such an easy fix and I'm sure it will be better next time. Oh, and if you have kids, this place is great. They have a full-on separate playroom for the kiddies. I'll definitely be going back! read more

Such a cute location for a date! I loved the fishy decor and the ceviche hit the spot! There is still room for improvement. The waitress was helpful as we tried to understand new terms on the menu, but I wish she was more forthcoming with recommendations and explanations of the dishes. We ordered ceviche de pescado which was perfectly acidic and delicious. It definitely stole the show! The portion size was quite big for an appetizer and I chose to eat this more as a main. We also ordered filete al tajin. The filete al tajin was disappointing in that it was tough and overcooked. Despite the very very obvious name, I wasn't expecting a filet with just a smattering of grocery-store tajin on top. The accompanying salad was too acidic to be of merit. Would not recommend this dish. In all, I would go again and order the ceviche, plus something different next time. Ambiance: 10/10 Service: 6/10 Ceviche: 11/10 Filete Al Tajin: 3/10 read more

Very good food. They haven't been open long so there were a few rough spots in the execution. Fried shrimp happy hour appetizer was perfect. Margaritas were too. Two orders of Paella Simar were very good. Unfortunately, the mussels and some of the shrimp were over-cooked and the plates came out of the kitchen plated differently and at different times. All in all, a very good meal for a restaurant that has been open for only a few weeks. We will return. read more

I've been Eye balling this place since December and so happy to see it open today! I came straight from the airport to here, the place was fantastic, the staff was amazing and the food was absolutely top-notch. Ceviche and spicy seafood soup was delicious. What a nice change of cuisine from the normal. Everything we had was excellent, flavorful and fresh. Saw some reviews that it was too bright, and that must have been addressed. Lighting was perfect. Our waiter spoke only Spanish, but was still easy to communicate with, and very attentive the whole evening (think his name was Doug- great service from him) It made the experience feel even more authentic. I'll be back, have to try the whole octopus next time. Looks so interesting. read more

Went to check out this place today. We got seated right away. Got served complimentary consume and tostadas. Pretty tasty. Waited about 10 minutes before the waiter came by to introduce himself and ask what we wanted to drink. It was fathers day so we understand its a little busy. Ordered a beer and a margarita. Waited about 15 more minutes before finally seeing him to put in our order. In the middle of putting in our order he said hold on our drinks are ready and hes going to get them. He gave us our drinks and ran over to the big party to continue serving them and forgot about us or having us put in our entrees, only appetizers. We waited another half hour, talked and finished out drinks. He was nowhere to be found. Our patience wore thin at this point so we asked for the check for the drinks and to cancel our order as we felt forgotten. They said they will get the manager to resolve this. I didnt want a manager because I dont want to complain. I just wanted to pay what we consumed and leave without a fuss. Got our check for our drinks and left. Was going to leave it at that because fathers day could be busy but it was too long of a wait and unprofessional to leave us in the middle of ordering to grab our drinks then ditch us. But conviniently after closing I get a bank notification that they're trying to charge me an extra 40 bucks in tip that I didnt sign for. Thats the lowest form of service or lack of. Will have to call to resolve the matter. It will get resolved with management or with the BBB. Save yourself the risk of shady business and find better mariscos elsewhere. read more

The best Mexican restaurant I went so far. The food is excellent and the servers are hospitable. We went there on Friday night, there was a live music playing romantic Spanish songs. We very much enjoyed our first visit to Simar. Tropical ceviche with mango and lime was perfect. Fish tilapia tacos excellent and reasonably priced. Steak and garlic shrimp tasty with grilled veggies and salad. Best part was the attentive, pleasant service in an open, inviting space. You can tell management and staff are working hard to make this new restaurant a success. Try it out if you enjoy coastal seafood - it's a good time. read more

I made a phone reservation the Friday before Valentine's Day, and only half jokingly said it was an early Valentine's dinner. Upon arrival, we were taken to a table with rose petals covering the surface....the only table in the restaurant with them. What a touch. The rest of our dinner matched Simar's attention to detail and customer service/satisfaction. Other reviewers rave about the food, so I won't...no photos either. Wow, what an excellent experience. We brought our dad here today to eat for Father's Day. Everyone was very welcoming. From the host, to the waitress Mariana, and the rest of the staff. Mariana was excellent with us. Very patient and helpful and recommending dishes to us. The food was beyond words. Appetizers, dishes and desserts. The one i got recommend by Mariana was the Filete Rey. I wish i would've snapped a picture to share but i couldn't help myself and went to town. Excellent is an under statement with how great it was. Came for lunch on Monday. Hated the floor cleaner smell from the patio (Fabuloso?). Once inside the place looked really nice and did not smell like the patio. The place was bright and felt like a high end restaurant inside. Orders the grilled red snapper (sauce on the side) and grilled octopus. Both was amazing! Was not overly seasoned or overcooked so the natural flavors came out perfect. Both were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Will certainly be back. read more

What a pleasant surprise and a nice experience. The servers were prompt, courteous and efficient. The 2 piece band playing softly, made us feel like we were in the Caribbean. The food was good and the proportions were nice. The house drinks were good and don't miss out on the banana cheesecake. It was delicious! I recommend this new hidden gem. THIS. IS. A. HIDDEN. GEM!!! Very nice, cozy, family-vibe place for nice dinner or just a night date. Our first time here and the staff (we got the sweet Vanessa ) was very friendly, professional, food was super delicious, worth the $$$. The setting is very nice with the hanging laterns. Tables are spaced out for social distancing. Very pleasant experience and we would definitely come back. Simar Seafood & Steak began as an idea of Lupe Barragan of Casa Chapala and Corina Barragan eldest daughter of Lupe and Lucina Barragan to bring a tasty variety of seafoods with a unique Mexican twist to the people of Austin. The Barragans love of the beach helped create a modest and breezy relaxing atmosphere complete with palapa on the patio and signature tentacle lights that pay homage to the restaurants signature dish Pulpo a la Parrilla. The unique atmosphere and plates make for an inviting gathering spots for locals, this family friendly spot also has an indoor kids room for little guests to unwind while parents enjoy a drink from the bar.

My steak had a great sauce but nothing to eat it with--no rice, no beans, nothing. For the price, that's ridiculous. Parking is also a hassle. Very little self-parking, and valet is pushed hard. I'm a big ceviche fan, and theirs is incredible--so fresh and flavorful that it instantly takes me back to Cabo San Lucas with each bite. We had a birthday dinner at Simar on Saturday night. We had several tables in the back area, and we had it all to ourselves. We had a menu with a couple options for the guests, with excellent options. The food was outstanding. Every single person loved their meal. The service was excellent.
