This Mexican seafood restaurant is located in the Arborteum and slightly tucked away. It's a large restaurant with lots of seating and a kid's play area too. There is plenty of space for large parties as well. Service is helpful and friendly and the food came out quickly for us (the portions are pretty solid). We started with chips and salsa and a shrimp ceviche that really had a good tang (it is a good amount that could be shared by 4). From there we had a few hefty dishes: Grilled red snapper - just a half and not a whole! It came with some fried plantains and your pick of a side and salsa Grilled pulpo - a large order of octopus with choice of two sides Tacos De Res - three tacos dressed with two sides of your choice. The sweet potato, regular fries and grilled seasonal veggies were good sides and we enjoyed the entrees too. Would note that everything is prepared with a healthy dose of garlic.

Nice Mexican seafood that carries Modelo Negra on tap in the summer! All the food was pretty good. Although felt kind of small portioned for the price. The soup in the volcanic bowl had a really good tomato based broth. Outside the mussels and shrimp, the other shellfish were kind of small. Like the clams and scallops. Service was good, large and nice interior with a lot of seats available. I would like to come back and try the fish or octopus.

Trying to beat the heat I stopped in for happy hour on a Friday. The atmosphere takes you away from the Austin traffic and Texas heat. Suddenly it feels like you're in a beach town in Mexico, from the tropical margarita flavors to the fresh cucumber ceviche they bring out with chips. To top it off there is a cup of fish consume to drink out of an espresso cup. It is truly charming, the only thing missing is a beach. Next time I am returning with an appetite to try the ceviche tropical. The coconut margarita is fantastic, I would love to be sipping that out of a coconut someday.

Seafood Mexican style needs to be done well. Simar nailed it. The guac and shrimp appetizer was fantastic. Don't know if the jalapeños they came with were supposed to be hot or not. Those with our serving were nearly sweet but was a great taste combination. The server brought out an espresso cup size of seafood broth - delicious. The chips and salsa are full size corn tortillas with 2 types of salsa. For mains we had the Tres Amigos and the Shrimp Tacos. It was easy to feel transported to a beach in Mexico they were so good. The flavors are perfect. Bright and colorful. Open, bright and airy with good music that's not too loud. We will come back for the unlimited buffet! For dessert we elected to try the flan and the Tres Leche. The flan was a bit thick and doughy but tasty. The Tres Leche was very good perfectly made.

Wow! Walked into this stand alone restaurant at 5:30 to hit Happy Hour. I was the only person there! Why??? Great menu, easy to access location, clean, spacious, and GREAT service. Just because it was just me for awhile anyway, I was treated like a long standing regular. Very welcoming. My friend showed up and we were treated to small cup of warm shrimp veloute. Delicious!! Hot chili sauce dip, cucumber pico de gallo and salsa followed with warm crunchy tortillas for dipping. We had ordered drinks and they were so delicious we ordered the same again! Mexican Martini and a Tamarind Smoky Old Fashioned ...I asked for it shaken and up....Mmm Dinner was fresh, delicious, pretty and well prepared. This is a sleeper that people need to get on board and check out!!

We stopped by Simar Seafood Cocina right at 5:30 on a Wednesday to catch the tail end of happy hour, and overall had a great experience; though it has been one of our more expensive date nights. From the happy hour menu, we ordered one chicken taco and one asada taco. Both were fantastic! great flavors, perfectly cooked, but it's worth noting it was literally just one taco each. Definitely more of a snack than a meal. We also got six oysters at $2 each, which were solid but didn't quite have the briny freshness you get from Whole Foods' oyster bar. Still, tasty and well presented. The mahi-mahi ceviche was a highlight. Super generous with the fish and the veggie-to-fish ratio was spot on. You're definitely getting a hearty portion there. The calamari appetizer was good, not mind-blowing, but it did its job and worked well as a shareable plate to start with. We grabbed a beer from the happy hour list and a mixed drink from the regular menu. All said and done, the bill came to around $75. That felt a little steep given that half our order was off the happy hour menu, which is why I'm knocking off a star. That said, the service was excellent, it was attentive, friendly, and made us feel welcome. All in all, Simar has a cool vibe, solid seafood, and is worth revisiting for happy hour, just maybe don't expect a budget night out. I also think that when we come back, I would like to try some of the other items on the menu as I've noticed that a lot of the five star reviews were about the foods that we did not order.

Not sure what to say about this place it would have much more potential, the sea food was not that great, we ordered the civeche 2 kinds and to be honest it was not fresh at all. The ambiance was nice and fresh, the service was meh, margaritas was good!

The decor was so pretty and spacious! We went on a Sunday morning and it wasn't busy at all. They also have a kid play area near the outdoor dining. There was only one waitress, but she was really helpful and attentive. She was really knowledgeable about the menu items and answered all our questions. The food did not disappoint. The chips and salsa was so good. We even asked for extra salsa. The little cup of Caldo Simar was also good. It was just a broth. For the starter we order the shrimp ceviche called Ceviche Azteca. It was very spicy even with the side of fried tortillas and crackers. Ceviche Azteca ($18) includes: shrimp, lime, soy sauce, sesame seeds, pico de gallo, and cucumber We also ordered the Tacos Nayarit ($17). This included three fried or grilled tilapia fish tacos with cheese, topped with pickles onions, carrots, and red cabbage. It also comes with a scoop of rice and beans. The food was delicious and fresh.

Staff bringing out this amazing seafood display of some of their menu items. It reminded me of a luau but Mexican style.

This is an amazing restaurant with welcoming staff and awesome menu. I can hear for a Yelp event and was fortunate to sample some of their seafood and other food and drinks. It's very spacious and tastefully designed. The staff is quick and friendly and everything I sampled was delicious. I was greeted by a margarita and was able to also sample a few other drinks from the bar. The ceviche was tasty as well as the oysters. The tacos were yummy as well as the shrimp and red snapper. The tres leches looked amazing but quickly ran out by the time I got through the line. I did sample the flan which was tasty and the yogurt which is something I'd have for breakfast but it was very good. It's located in a huge shopping center. So finding it was a challenge but it does stand alone near the access road. I just needed to wind my way to the back of the center as I wasn't coming up from that access road. There is a driveway you can enter if you're in the far right lane and know it's there. This is a great place for a party or to bring the family or come for a date. It's really a fabulous place.

I love the idea of Simar. I grew up in Mexico City and there's nothing like a Mexican seafood restaurant. The seasoning and flavors are decidedly different from the white tablecloth establishments and absolutely wonderful when well executed. These are happy, colorful, bustling places. Simar is almost there - ambiance and friendly service, for sure... but there were a few swings and misses that took it down two notches. I ordered a classic margarita but was served something with tons of sour orange juice in it. Ugh. My seafood soup was a winner but all three of my companions thought their fish filets were quite overcooked. We all agreed that the ceviche was delicious.

I was extremely excited to attend this event. Thanks to Tomas and the staff y'all did a wonderful job and those QR codes with our pictures was the icing on the cake. I must admit as much as I drive on 183, I have never noticed this place. My family came in from out of town and I took them here for dinner. The restaurant was recommended by a friend. The staff was very attentive. The seafood selection was awesome. We really couldn't decide between the appetizers, so we had to try them all. I was afraid we would be too full for entrees, but the food was so delicious, we are everything. We love it here, the booze is good and we love our bartender Annamaria. But, unfortunately the food is a hit or miss. We've visited SS&S soo many times, will continue to visit as the oysters are nice and their ceviches but their bigger items/entrees aren't always fresh and are often prepared not tasting the same as before. The best part on their menu is the soup, yall should try that. restaurant is pretty big, great for large tables and the bar is nice. There's no ambience but its nice to hang and be with family. read more

Okay, I just cannot recommend this restaurant more. The seafood is delicious!! We love the fried plantain's, the shrimp cocktail and the coconut shrimp. Once again, all were a hit with our family. One of my favorite foods in life is Mexican seafood "mariscos". So I'm very peculiar about my Mariscos. I was pleased to find this restaurant because I have not heard much about it. It's not what you would consider a popular go to place in Austin. I highly recommend their aguachiles, especially the "Perla Negra". Our server Jacob made our birthday celebration even more special. Wow, we had high expectations coming in here due to the high praise here on Yelp, but Simar still managed to surpass our expectations. My wife and I love to enjoy Mexican Coastal food when in Mexico, but until now have never really seen it here in Austin. We saw pictures of the Octopus/"Pulpo" here on Yelp and were sold/decided to try it. Here is what we had: - Complimentary Tostadas/Salsas: Delicious -- salsas were refreshing and a perfect way to start the meal. - Primavera Ceviche: 5 stars -- refreshing with a lot of lime and bursting with flavor from the ingredient quality instead of Salt/Sugar. - Pulpo: Star of the show. We've had many preparations of Octopus over the years, and this is the best. Seasoned mildly and cooked to perfection -- the vegetables, mini quesadilla, and rice/salad served alongside were perfect compliments and balanced/used high quality ingredients as well. - Tiramisu: Tried this as they were out of the Flan -- HUGE slice that would be plenty for 3 or 4, beautifully presented, and much lighter than most Tiramisu I've tried (almost like a mousse). I was stuffed/argued against dessert (I lost) until I took a bite -- and promptly ended up eating half. Left stuffed without feeling gross. Service was great, Restaurant is beautiful, price is reasonable for what you get. Seriously, try this place -- you won't regret it. read more

Ordered the fried coconut shrimp after a long day without food. Shrimp were burned and soggy. Everything was bland. No hint of salt, pepper, or any seasoning. As another reviewer mentioned, there is definitely an off putting smell as you enter the restaurant. We were there early so there were not a lot of people. It is also oddly bright. The lights were dimmed later which helped. We started off with a pulpo ceviche. It was very heavy on cucumber and served with nothing additional. There were packages of saltines and several fried, whole corn tortillas that are brought out when you arrive. The fried tortillas were plain and were fine with it. The waitstaff had taken one of our menus when the ceviche came out. No problem since menus are online anyway. I ordered the swordfish al tajin and my husband asked for a recommendation. The huachinango Veracruz was whole heartedly recommended and that is what he ordered. The food was good...not great but good. The Veracruz is a whole fish and was very crispy. Like with very little delicate fish to enjoy but still good. Our huge problem came when the bill arrived. The Veracruz was $47 dollars!!!! So many problems with this I can't even list them all but suffice it to say that the dish on the online menu is $25 but is listed as "Market Price" on the menu in the restaurant. There is also an added service charge. Sorry that I don't know what it is for. We didn't ask since we will never be returning. read more

Went for lunch and got a pretty tasty (if slightly expensive) meal. The restaurant interior is bright and colorful. Good place for either a date or a business lunch. The menu had some good looking options. The ceviche I ordered was on point. My seared tuna sandwich was perfectly cooked. Only minor criticisms--I got raw red onion, and not pickled onion as the menu advertised. The french fries were also very forgettable, and probably needed another 60 seconds in the fryer. My companion got the "Burrito Vallarta" which he also liked--though this was more of a sandwich wrap than an actual burrito. Service was good. Restaurant is worth visiting. read more

We were utterly amazed by our experience today. The Executive Chef Pedro is clearly talented and personally stopped by every table several times to make sure that everything was to our standards, which they undeniably were. The seafood was fresh and well prepared. The red snapper was moist and well seasoned, and even though I've always been hesitant about eating octopus, theirs is perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. The entire staff is welcoming, knowledgeable and, most importantly, passionate about the restaurant. I truly hope that they receive the recognition that they deserve. Simar is an attractive seafood restaurant, but the prices are exceedingly high for the proportion of actual seafood in its entrées. The staff is welcoming, yet the entire experience falls short because of the cost of the food and drinks. I doubt they will be in business much longer, now that the "newness" has worn off and the prices remain unreasonable. A couple visits was enough for me. Nothing new to experience. I will go elsewhere for better prices. read more

This place is a gem. We walked in with no reservation on a Friday night and were greeted with smiles from friendly staff and immediately seated. When our server Rita came over to take our order, the executive chef Pedro also came to our table to greet us and give us his personal recommendations. We went with the chicharon marino (fried calamari and onion rings), tropical ceviche, filete baja (flounder and shrimp), and cheesecake. Everything was wonderful. My wife and I visited for the first time for Sunday lunch today. I had the Cameron Trenzado and she had the Cameron Guajillo. Large portions of shrimp in both dishes, which were delicious, with exceptional presentations. We plan to return again, and highly recommend this restaurant. Great service from David! read more

So I tried this place again and it was a completely different experience. I had some amazing fish soup that they offer in a small sample with the tortillas and salsa. Simply delicious. I ordered a cup of the soup and the flounder and shrimp in a banana leaf. The whole meal was amazing. It looks like the menu is greatly expanded so I look forward to trying many more meals here! read more

Great place! We went to go hear the happy hour mariachi band who were great. Food was very tasty and well presented. A lot of interesting items on the menu that I haven't seen other places. The service is second to none! Every staff member was amazing, attentive and so welcoming and made me and my mother feel like VIP. I am an influencer so I go out to eat all of the time but this is my new favorite restaurant in Austin. It's that good. From the costal Mexican dishes to the amazing chef Pedro, this place will blow you away. I recommend the mussels with chorizo and the stuffed lobster. Ate on the closed in outdoor patio that had the ability to open up on less hot days. Started with tropical ceviche which was great and ok sturdy tortilla crips. Entree was the lemon pepper flounder with garlic shrimp. Both items tasted great. Steamed vegetable and rice sides were also a hit. Waiter was friendly. Margarita was good. I booked this place a couple months ago for a Friday dinner and finally made our way out here. I was very excited, but ultimately, the place didn't live up to our excitement. The environment here was great. Right from the start it was an enjoyable ambiance that felt much like a restaurant you would find at a Cancun resort. Live music playing, lots of decor and seafood laid out on ice when you walk in. All of this was great and the highlight of our experience. I ended up going with some fish tacos and a salmon that turned out okay, but certainly nothing special that I was expecting from a seafood restaurant with a 4.8 star ranking. Something very upsetting here was the menu. It is completely loaded with errors and the staff is 100% aware. Multiple orders at our table were brought out wrong and we were told the menu was wrong My dad ordered some fried fish tacos and they came out grilled. Servers response, "oh yeah, the menu is wrong, they are grilled". She took them back and got remade but took quite a while. I order tacos that came with flour tortillas, they came out with corn which I am not a fan of. Response "yeah, they messed up the menu, it's supposed to be corn". Now these issues were resolved so I am sparing from original 2 star impression, but why would this not being something that was mentioned when we ordered these items? Why would the staff not tell us that right when we sat down and starting looking at the menus? Why not fix the menus??? Aside from this the service was a bit slow, but given out 10+ people it was a bit understandable. The environment was really the reason this place didn't sit at a 2 star. ++ taste: fried calamari appetizer was different (served w/ fresh red onion and jalapeno), which I very much enjoyed. the shrimp cocktail was a bit more like a ceviche than a traditional thick cocktail sauce. again, different but very good. -- expensive: like *very*, especially for being in a strip mall. if it was on a cliff overlooking the mediterranean sea, i could understand. when i saw they charged $5 for a Jarritos bottled soda, the rest fell in line. -- extra fee: mysterious charge stuck in after tax on the bill labeled "cc ...", which the waiter informed me was for paying with a credit card (apparently taken off if paying cash). build that shit into your menu prices- dont nickel & dime people... especially at these prices. very annoying. + service: waiter was attentive, friendly, and professional. i'm guessing he has been a waiter for awhile, and would have no problem even when/if it got busy. + atmosphere: decor was unique. bright, very clean and new feeling. - comfort: chairs / booths werent very ergonomic. layout was a bit too open, yet i could see feeling crowded at the same time (when & if busy- we were there on a saturday afternoon, and there was only 3 tables seated at any given time). read more

We love this place so much we went two days in a row! I love the restaurant vibe -- clean, open, coastal. Our waitress, Beatriz, was very polite, knowledgeable and helpful with helping us select our dishes. We had the mango margarita, with Corona Premier!, ceviche, mussels with chorizo, fried whole tilapia and everything tasted divine. I love the authentic Mexican twist on seafood. Our waitress went above and beyond making sure we have everything we needed. And then we got dessert to go and she gave us extra crackers that we fell in love with and she also gave us salsa to bring home. I highly recommend the shrimp on the salad and I also recommend shrimp appetizer with mango it's amazing! read more

Was jazzed to find a highly rated Mexican restaurant near our hotel. Decent, friendly service. Cold tasty beers. The good news stops there. Colleague had the fried fish tacos, greasy and tasteless. Simar Seafood & Steak began as an idea of Lupe Barragan of Casa Chapala and Corina Barragan eldest daughter of Lupe and Lucina Barragan to bring a tasty variety of seafoods with a unique Mexican twist to the people of Austin. The Barragans love of the beach helped create a modest and breezy relaxing atmosphere complete with palapa on the patio and signature tentacle lights that pay homage to the restaurants signature dish Pulpo a la Parrilla. The unique atmosphere and plates make for an inviting gathering spots for locals, this family friendly spot also has an indoor kids room for little guests to unwind while parents enjoy a drink from the bar.

Bussers were no help--they dropped items and rushed back inside, ignoring attempts to flag them down. We accidentally ordered two "family-style" salads because no one explained it. That pretty much sums up the service: rushed, unclear, and inattentive. If you need anything--water, utensils, clarification--you have to interrupt them mid-drop-off or you won't get it. The prices don't match the experience. Food was decent, but portions and sides were disappointing. We got four tortillas for four people and couldn't get more. My steak had a great sauce but nothing to eat it with--no rice, no beans, nothing. For the price, that's ridiculous. Parking is also a hassle. Very little self-parking, and valet is pushed hard. The most frustrating part? As we left, there was plenty of staff standing around inside. Meanwhile, the patio--where service actually needed help--was understaffed and chaotic. Bottom line: overpriced, loud, hot, and poorly managed. Sit inside if you go, or skip it altogether, again the prices don't match the service !

I'm a big ceviche fan, and theirs is incredible--so fresh and flavorful that it instantly takes me back to Cabo San Lucas with each bite. We had a birthday dinner at Simar on Saturday night. We had several tables in the back area, and we had it all to ourselves. We had a menu with a couple options for the guests, with excellent options. The food was outstanding. Every single person loved their meal. The service was excellent. We also ordered a birthday cake, and that was very good and the attention to detail was appreciated. I highly recommend Simar.
