What an amazing surprise! I hope everyone finds out about this place because it's one of the best restaurants in NW Austin and they deserve the business. The first thing you notice walking in is how bright, sunny, and beautiful everything is. I can't believe this is the same building that was occupied by the dank, cavernous Marie Callender's for most of my life. Our server brought out little espresso cups with lobster consume, and big tortilla chips with salsa and diced cucumbers as soon as we sat down. For drinks we got a Simar Reviver, the restaurant's take on a mescal michelada, and a guava margarita. For entrees we got the paella and the swordfish al tajin and both were amazing. This was a really nice seafood Mexican restaurant. They start you with a welcome cup of spicy seafood broth and some tostadas and salsas. We had a shrimp appetizer and shrimp tacos, both were excellent. We also ordered a couple cocktails, the Mr ocho was VERY very spicy. The basil smash was very sweet even though they told us it didn't have any simple syrup when we asked, it also didn't have any basil or mint at all! They said "the mint flavoring may be giving it a sweet taste". Was too sweet to drink. The rum with pineapple juice was good and not sweetened which we liked. Will definitely be back the next time we visit Austin. Oh and a final note about all Austin restaurants in general, it is beyond me why every restaurant in Austin doesn't serve reverse osmosis or bottled/filtered water. Best mariscos in town!!! My friends and I decided to treat ourselves to Simar Seafood after a long hike. We walked in and we're so surprised at how nicely decorated and how huge it was! Simar has only been open for a couple weeks, so it was not super busy. Our waiter came by and treated us amazing! She knew very little English (only spoke Spanish), but luckily I was able to order for my friends. Everything sounded amazing on the menu, so we decided to try a little bit of everything. We had: -oysters -mussels with chorizo -ceviche azteca -paella -camarón tropical -huachinango Veracruz -flan imposible -banana cheesecake The chef, Pedro, came out at the end and greeted us. Emma, our server was very attentive and greeted us with a small cup of the seafood soup. The little taste sold me immediately and I ordered the Caldo Simar. The Caldo comes loaded with perfectly stewed, calamari, squid, scallops, shrimp, fish, as well as mussels and it is perfect. Everything about this restaurant is amazing. The abundant parking, the wide open lobby, the glass peering into the kitchen, the design, the gorgeous interior detail, the friendly smiling faces throughout, I mean I could go on and on and I haven't even mentioned the food yet. I usually go for verde because it's usually less spicy than the others, still spicy of course because of the serranos but sooo good!! I let the shrimp sit in the juice a little so it can cook more. Best aguachile I've had in TX. 10/10. Snapper Veracruz filet - WOW. Just wow. The best snapper I've had!!! The flavor, texture, capers added to the sauce.... Amazing all around. 11/10!!! Fried Tacos Nayarit - tilapia but didn't taste like tilapia at all (in a good way!!!) tilapia is never my first choice but this was the fish they use for their fish tacos, and the flavor of the fish was very good. Overall they were a little on the dry side - I could have used some chipotle sauce or mayo on them which I'll ask for next time! 7/10. Mostachón - very light yet firmly packed pecan cake. Food and service were excellent. One of the other reviews mentioned inaccuracies in the menu, and when I ordered, the waiter informed me that they didn't have swordfish and offered to sub mahi-mahi. I redirected the waiter to prepare the same dish, but using the snapper instead of the swordfish. They obliged and the results were excellent. Bottom line with most seafood restaurants, in my opinion, is stick to what's fresh and avoid the bulk frozen stuff and you're going to be happy with the result. read more

Pleasantly surprised at what a great dinner we had. We have driven by a million times. We had family in town that likes seafood but needed a family friendly place with our toddlers. They have a whole kid area in the back enclosed patio. It was a little warm but to be fare we were the only ones who chose to sit back there by the kid area and they turned on the ac in that part once we were there and that helped. I felt bad and was surprised at how quiet it was on a Friday night. The food was great sweet server, I wish I took more pictures of just the food. Will definitely be back for another family date night or margaritas with mama friends. About a handful of tables are close enough to the kids area so you can see it from your seat. Hope more business for them, glad we discovered this gem! Would give a 4.5 if I could, always room for improvement but decided to round up with such a nice experience. read more

I hate only giving Simar 3 stars because what they did well they did fantastically, but where they failed left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). Let's start with the positive- the food was AMAZING. That's the most important part and they shined in all ways. My party of 6 all shared dishes they were so good. The Nachos Atún was spectacular in its simplicity and flavor. The tropical ceviche was fantastic- bright, sweet, tangy, rich, everything a ceviche should be. The Filete Florentina was wonderful, tender and flavorful but I would have loved a little more sauce. I wasn't a fan of the crunchy bacon bits on top- it seemed an out of place and unnecessary for an already delicious dish. The whole Huachinango was beautifully seasoned and cooked to tender, flaky perfection. The ribeye Simar was tender, juicy, and beautifully grilled. The Pasta Simar was equally delish. Finally, the Mostachón, a nut cake with cream and strawberries on top was a perfect wrap up to dinner. It wasn't too sweet and the texture was on point. So food-wise, Simar is a HUGE hit. Now let's address the negatives. The restaurant is in an old Marie Callendar's location, and frankly, it still looks like a Marie Callendar's. The decor looks cheap and like not a lot of thought was put into it. The lighting is bright, highlighting the lack of identity of the space, almost like Simar doesn't know what it wants to be. Keep in mind this is not a cheap restaurant- the prices are more indicative of a higher end restaurant (although worth it IMHO), so the decor, to me, should be reflective of a nicer place. I like to enjoy my surroundings as much as the food, so this was a negative to me, but some may not care. Second, a gentleman came around (not sure if he was the manager, or the Tequila Sommelier, or what), but he was very friendly, gregarious, and really chatted us up in a great way. He said he had a new tequila that he "wanted us to try." He brought over a drink cart, special glasses and poured small tasters of El Rey Del Mundo for us to try. It was a lot of fun and he put on a big show about it. We had fun with it. It seemed like he was marketing some sort of new tequila experience or something by letting us taste the new tequila. Make no mistake though, the pours were small- as would be appropriate for a test-taste. Imagine our surprise when on the bill was a charge for over $45 for tequila! We did not ask for this special treatment, we didn't order the drinks and he said he wanted us to "try it." it felt like a bait-and-switch scam to pad our bill. I would not have expected that kind of behavior from a nice restaurant. Final thoughts: the food was phenomenal, but not cheap (but worth it), the ambiance left a lot to be desired, and whatever you do, don't fall for the "tequila scam!" read more

I'll start with the pros. - margaritas are delicious and huge - octopus was delicious - servers are very understanding and very kind - live music Cons - mojitos use mint syrup (and they put a shot of it in there (tasted like menthol and even after asking it to be remade it still tasted like a cough drop) - ceviche is presented beautifully but has like 80% onions and carrots and 20% fish. - temp was messed up on 3 out of 3 ribeyes. - dessert was dry and you can tell was just kept refrigerated. Chocolate cake was dry and inedible. Flan was their only saving grace - after paying $150 you get very little feeling satiated. Won't return. Went with a party of 6 and the only people who enjoyed their food were the ones who got octopus. Margaritas kept everyone happy and no cons to the servers who tried their best (not their fault). Restaurant also has a service fee added additional to tip. Not sure why I'm paying extra for the staff, the tip should reflect the service but I already sent back a ribeye and a few drinks myself. We got some nice dipping salsas with crackers and tostadas to start, then got the tropical ceviche with mango that was so fresh and light!
