Catered from here for a work event and it worked out fairly well. The food was boxed up nicely and ready when requested -- kept very warm by the way it was packaged, with huge portions. The interior of the restaurants with the decoration wasn't bad for the lower price point. Service was pretty quick as I stopped by before the normal lunch rush. The food did what it needed to for my event -- which is that the portion sizes were very generous in terms of amount of meat and came with more than enough rice to feed everyone. The price was surprisingly good for the downtown area, probably $6 per person as we didn't get close to finishing what we ordered. Some of the food itself by the time it was served wasn't very crispy (sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken) though the flavor was fine and the meat was alright (not the most tender, but not tough). The stir fried vegetables and vegetable fried rice worked better for catering and were fairly tasty. Two cuisines sharing same roof, if you are dining for Chinese food, you can go to the back and order food and sit anywhere. If you want sushi, you will be escorted to an area front of house. I ordered the spicy chicken which is similar to sweet and sour chicken with a side of fried rice for $15 (drinks not included). Food is decent for the cost and you get what you ordered. It's back (at least I'm aware of it being back...). Interesting location... enter and walk past the sushi bar to the back to order the Chinese. Love the spicy chicken. It's fried and dark meat and the sauce is still as good as ever. Have tried some of the other dishes which weren't fried and used all white meat chicken. Gotta say, white meat is kinda dry in their dishes. So would stick with the spicy chicken or maybe orange. And the egg rolls are solid as well. Service is pretty fast and there's good turnover on the mains or they make it to order and you can eat there. For Chinese lunch in the loop it gets four relative stars. Heard about this place and tried it on a whim. Scheduled an order thru ritual for an hour later. At the scheduled time, ritual canceled the order! On the app it said the store was closed. I called and a guy answered and said it WASN'T closed and that ritual wouldn't allow him to accept our order-- BUT told me we could come and he'd ring us at a different register. We went The guy was SOOOOO very nice! Our food was ready. But .... we couldn't get our discount due to ritual acting up. After talked to mgmt, they gave us our order free!! I've ordered delivery from Silk Road three times. The nice thing is: they're fast, and they offer cans of soda at a more than reasonable price. I've had three different entrees now: spicy chicken, house shrimp, and cashew chicken. Spicy chicken -- maybe three stars? -- and the other entrees are pretty much "steam table Chinese that's been under heat lamps for maybe an hour or so"-level of quality and oddly watery. The crab rangoon is almost all wonton and precious little filling. I've read a bunch of positive reviews and it's fairly close to my workplace, so I really wanted to like this place more than I did. I love this place. It's a bit off the beaten path as it's tucked in the alley behind the 20 South Clark building. When you walk in an order your food it is usually in your hands within 15 seconds. Silk Road is a no frills, no nonsense hole in the wall Chinese joint that aims to satisfy even the largest of appetites during the weekday lunch rush. In an area full of chains, generic bar food, and overpriced markets and food halls, it's nice to finally find a place to get your fill for under $10. Even though there are tons of great authentic Asian or trendy "Asian Fusion" type spots in the area, sometimes I'm just hungry and looking to get stuffed on greasy ass generic Chinese food. Silk Road is a little bit of a hidden gem, tucked away in an alley along LaSalle, just north of Monroe and LaSalle. It seems to be a go-to spot for the IT crowd and any other local professionals grabbing a bite during the lunch hour. It's pretty bare bones with just the food counter, a water cooler, and then a decent seating area with a bunch of tables. Food: This ain't authentic Chinese food, but that don't mean it doesn't totally hit the spot. Silk Road knows their target audience. They deliver generous portions of meat and rice dishes to the masses. Their bread and butter are their chicken dishes: Orange chicken, Kung Pao chicken, Sweet and Sour chicken, and my personal favorite the Spicy Chicken. Pretty much any sort of deep fried breaded chicken dish is their specialty. The spicy chicken has large chunks of breaded chicken tossed in a spicy sauce with carrots, onions, and green peppers. The sauce isn't overly sweet like the Orange Chicken, and not too saucy either. It's almost a paste-like consistency. I wouldn't say it's over the top spicy either, just enough heat to enhance the flavor. People looking for a little extra kick usually get more sauce on the side. One lady packs part of the styrofoam container with rice and the other just fills up the rest of it with liberal scoops of chicken. And I mean liberal. They literally don't care about being so exact like they do at Chipotle. These ladies just pack that shit until it won't close. If you're a meat lover, Silk Road will not disappoint. I almost always complain about portions being too small, and even I struggle to finish the entire thing. I'd say the chicken to rice ratio is closer to 2:1 rather than half and half. They have other items on the menu as well, but they'll take longer to get since it might have to be made to order. Service: Silk Road is a well-oiled machine. They churn people out QUICK. Most of the time my food is already packed and sitting on the tray before I even get my credit card out of my wallet. The beauty of having a small menu is you can just keep churning out mass quantities of the same 3-4 dishes and keep the line moving. The line gets pretty long during prime time lunch hours, but I've pretty much always been in and out with my food within a few minutes. Pro tip: There's actually two registers, one when you walk right in and another at the end of the counter on the right side. The main line can get pretty long, and I almost never see anyone else taking advantage of that second register even though the guy is waiving people over. Overall, Silk Road is a permanent fixture in my lunch rotation. It's by far the best value work lunch I've found in the area and I like it better than its nearby competitor Sixty Five Chinese. It's probably been at least 5 years since I've been here, and the spicy and orange chicken dishes are still very tasty, along with the white rice. To me, they are a great combination as a Combination! I'm surprised after all these years, these chicken dishes are still the same taste, though if you take them home for dinner, it doesn't stay well. Still, was great for lunch or dinner, and will come back for more, next time I am back to downtown. I hope they don't close or sell the business to yet another hedge fund/VC company, or retire (like the unfortunate fate of Pepper's, that nice Asian couple, hope they retire in peace and comfort). This place is the best Chinese option for the food you get and the price you pay. They have daily specials which comes upto $10 per individual. Chinese in the alley I call it...the food tastes good. And one interesting factor I've noticed is with any order you get more meat(if it's in your order) than the rice or noodles so if you are a meat lover you will completely enjoy this. And the amount of food you get on a regular order is ...omg it's more than one person am handle. They have two sizes of order ..small and regular. I tried both and the quantity is really more on both for me. I had to struggle through to complete it. For the taste it's good too...i have ordered Schezwan chicken fans spicy chicken from here. I went during lunchtime and there was a line (very popular place for pickup lunch). The food was pretty good huge portions but the vegetables are not cooked all the way (they are crunchy). This restaurant is tucked away in an alley on LaSalle. I came from far, far away to try the famed food of Silk Road. It looks like it is an alternative to Panda Express or other "fast food" Chinese takeout places. I ordered the orange chicken, and the special comes with fried or white rice for $9. For an extra dollar, you can add a drink. The orange chicken sauce is a little sweeter, tangier in taste than that of Panda Express. They definitely do give you more food; I wasn't able to finish my meal because there was so much food. However, I think Panda Express still takes the cake in terms of value and taste. The food still tasted fine, but nothing amazing. It is also hard to find seating during lunchtime. Service is very fast, though. I would like to dedicate this review to my friend who bought my lunch. Not a fancy place but the food is good. It's not made to order, there is a limited menu so pretty much anything you order is already prepared and they just put it in a container but they constantly make new batches and you can even look into the kitchen and see the vegetables being chopped and the food being prepared. Food: I had the Spicy Chicken (it came w/ white rice), an Egg Roll, and a Hot and Sour Soup. Everything was pretty good, on-par for a Chinese food place. The Hot and Sour Soup is not as I prefer it though. I prefer the P.F. Chang's style and this is not that. However, I very much enjoyed everything else and the portion size was just fine for lunch (I wasn't STUFFED, but I wasn't hungry). Also, they have free water off to the side. Thats kick butt. Try not to overeat, then your tummy will be fine. Open 10am-7pm M-F, daily specials & just entrees under $7 bucks. Crab Rangoons are OK for fast food chinese, better than Panda I'd say, $.68 cents each. Egg rolls $1.20, they are long, 3-4 inches in length. Wait staff are nice and helpful. They make all the food fresh, there is a window looking into the cooking area from the counter, you can watch as meals are prepared. If you order a side with your meal and a drink, you could spend just under $9 bucks. Don't want a beverage, they have water, self serve. If I compared the stomach feels to Panda, Manchu Wok or 65, I'd say this is the best yet. Moderation my friends.. its all about moderation. read more

I was feeling cheap Chinese food today for lunch, and good ol' SR hit the spot. Got the Spicy Chicken special (Tuesdays and Fridays!) with an egg roll for just north of $7, and they give so much that it became my dinner too. The chicken's got a good kick, and the pieces are nice and large. My co-worker instead got a mix plate of Spicy Chicken and something else...not much more expensive, but I was envious of the variety he had.
