I'm mostly writing this to remind myself not to come back here. I'm no expert in Thai, so I can't say that my Pad Kee Mao was made wrong, but it was not what I expected and I couldn't finish it. It was made with egg noodles instead of rice, and the whole dish tasted much sweeter than I'm used to. Also, I asked for my usual Medium spicy and nearly burned my mouth off. Also, there were grape tomatoes in it for some reason and I don't like eating whole tomatoes of any kind, but also it's a combination I don't associate with Thai food. I like her salmon and the chicken curry, but my all time favorite is the Thai iced tea with coconut cream -- MY GOSH. That will change your life if you're a lover of Thai tea like me. Every Thai tea I have had since hers, I'm always saying "it's great but Sila's is the best!" I love when the couple is working together, they seem nice and care about their product and community. The food is wonderful and they do get quite busy so make sure you plan for that! read more

A true ST Johns district gem of a food cart. I ordered a Thai iced tea, white peach curry with pork medallions over white rice, and their mango sticky rice. Let me start with they have a welcoming friendly staff. I came to this food cart station with my Aussie, Bella (it's a hot day and I didn't want to leave her in the car, even with the windows open). I ordered my meal and the owner handed me a treat for Bella. Sweet! I was handed my drink and I sat down in the covered patio area to wait for my order. The atmosphere was very pleasant and I appreciated protection from the hot sun. That Thai iced tea was the best I have tasted. Yummm! The wait wasn't long and the food was still very hot when I reached my home. I have had many different curries in my life, yet never tasted white peach pork curry. Let me tell you...it is absolutely delicious. It has great flavor and the pork medallions and vegetables were cooked just right. It came in a large portion which I will be happy to enjoy as leftovers tonight. Last but not least is the mango sticky rice. This is pure 'crack', sooo addicting! Seriously!!! I will be back!! I really, really wanted to love this place, based on the reviews and recommendations from some neighbors. But, I was very disappointed. If I could give separate ratings for food vs. price and service, I would only rate my food 2-stars, price 4-stars, and service 5-stars. Massuman Curry is my favorite Thai dish. I eat Massuman a few times per month at various restaurants and carts around town. For the most part, the taste is consistent no matter where I'm eating. But, the Massuman here at Sila Thai was absolutely awful for several reasons: * The curry was way too salty. I love salty food, BUT the salt overpowered the taste, which should have been sweet, creamy and slightly spicy. * The chicken was dry/over-cooked. And there wasn't much chicken, very skimpy portion. * The portion size of the curry was smaller than most other places for the same price. But, the rice portion was good. * The carrots were giant chunks, still raw/crunchy in the middle, instead of slices or small chunks. * The potatoes had a weird sour taste (sour like vinegar or fermented). * The coconut milk was VERY sour and tasted almost spoiled or rancid. Overall, the taste was so bad that after a few bites I threw the food away, didn't eat it :( Despite this, I will give Sila Thai another try, but will definitely not order anything with coconut milk, or carrots, or potatoes!!! read more

Stopped by here for the first time for lunch today. The owner was kind and gave me a few recommendations, including the summer special white peach dish, which you can have as a stir fry w/ choice of meat, or a curry w/ choice of meat. I went w/ the stir fry option (w/ chicken) and it was delicious. The veggies were firm and well portioned. There was a ton of chicken. And the dish uses an entire peach, which was indulgent in all the best ways. If you're out for a walk around this part of Lombard this summer, don't miss stopping by for lunch or dinner. A famous meme is Fast, Good, and Cheap; pick two. Here you get all three. This is one of my favorite Thai food carts. It has moved around as Portland has developed, from MLK and Washington and now to this small food cart pod in St Johns. It's close to the St Johns Twin Cinema and Cathedral Park. The owner has great specials, like a recent white peach curry. Often there will be salmon fillet as the protein in a special. Mango, pumpkin, pineapple and the dreaded eggplant are routine ingredient options on the menu. Do not fear the eggplant prepared to the right doneness with Thai sauces! (Eggplant works well in sandwiches with Italian spices and my introduction to the lowly eggplant was at House of Nanking before it was "discovered." Now I buy eggplant and cook it at home. It would be similar to zucchini in texture.) A good portion of vegetables, green beans, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, green peas, red & green peppers and the like are part of the dishes. Not fancy, but nicely crunchy. A lot of American Thai food relies on sugar. Brown sugar is good, because? Sila does not over-sugar, but perhaps they can adjust on request? I would say their salt is medium. Their coconut milk curries are the right consistency, not too heavy or light. You can eat in the pod which is quiet, has picnic tables, and several other carts. The price is a great incentive to take home several meals at a time. Their containers are filled to the brim, if you need freezing room just request, or make some freezing room by eating! They have a printed menu and take phone orders. Sila joins my brown rice list. Of course they have white rice too! Default spicing is mild-medium, just ask for more as you like. Dont order spicy pad see ew 10 minutes before closing. Every noodle was covered in chili seeds and chili flakes. Every noodle. Borderline inedible. Still finished it, but tasted like an actual act of aggression. Brother got one not spicy, that tasted pretty good, but they must have put 16 scoops of chili flakes/seeds in there. Sila Thai has made me love Thai food again. St. Johns has a few Thai places but they weren't anything to write home about. Sila Thai is super delicious-- flavorful, authentic, fresh. The husband and wife who own the cart are friendly and care about the product that they put out. I'm stoked they moved closer to my house and are more centrally locates than before. You know how most places serve pad Thai with waaay over-cooked noodles that turn in to noodle bits when gathering the flavors on chop sticks? Not gonna happen here. 9pm, Monday. None of the food cart pods were open except for Sila Thai. Moon, the chef/owner is a hard-working business woman that understands the hustle--working when everyone else closes up shop, even on this rain-soaked evening. Reminds me of my immigrant parents who worked long hours and sacrificed much for a better life. And it seems to be paying off with perfect 5 star reviews and a healthy bottom line--upon asking, she says she's doing very well. And obviously she is, as the other reviewers stated, this Thai place is indeed a value. $6 for a freshly prepared meal from homemade sauces and spice mixes. I chatted with her this evening and she gave me a complimentary Thai tea. She is a sweet lady and I will definitely be back for more, since the pumpkin stir fry and red curry I ordered were well-seasoned and flavorful with just enough spice. And brown rice is no additional charge--who does that nowadays? If you're looking for a cheap wholesome meal made with care and love, come here. read more

Hands down some of the best Thai food in Portland! Me and my boyfriend always order the pad kee mao (pictured in my post), pad Thai, and the pineapple fried rice which are all amazing! And the pad kee mao is unbelievable which is what brought me to post this today. Went there last weekend and boy their menu is long... was kind of in a hurry, so ordered the special of the day (spicy mango with basil and chicken and jasmine rice). We love this place! The people who run it are so great - the man is as awesome as the woman! We got Pad Thai which is a huge portion and lasted us through 3 meals. He recommended the orange chicken with peanut and chili sauce and it was so light and delicious, and then we got the yellow curry which was another great portion that we used for dinner that night over rice. Amazing Thai food so close yes please, but the VERY BEST THAI ICED TEA so close.... OH NO!!! I'm so addicted to their Thai iced tea! We've already had it a few times.... In a row but it's that good. We have also ordered their mango fried rice, massaman curry, crab puffs and mango sticky rice. All were fantastic but the crab puffs were some of the best I've ever had and you can tell they are made from scratch. The mango sticky rice was the perfect sweet creamy treat. Easily the best Thai food I have had in Portland, and my fiancé and I eat ALOTTTT of Thai food. The customer service is amazing and casual, which I love, it's a nice switch up from a lot of the stuck-up PDX restaurants out there (although most of the food carts are super chill). Not only is the customer service amazing though, but the food is heaven in a to-go container! I live in the Saint Johns area and hadn't been overly impressed with most of the Thai food in Portland until I tried Sila Thai. I get Pad Thai and egg rolls almost every time, so I can't speak to much else other than those two dishes, but if they are anything at all like those two dishes then you don't want to miss out on this place. Prices are reasonable and owners are hard-working, care about their customers/food quality, and extremely funny and friendly. I'll be coming here as long as I'm around PDX! read more

I'm going to assume I didn't order the right thing, because my food was ho hum and unmemorable. I'm not sure what all the raves are about. My go-to litmus test for any Thai place is their Thai basil, or whatever the joint calls their version of veggies and meat stir-fried with basil. I had this one with chicken. I asked the owner about spice level, and he said, "it comes medium hot, white dude spicy." That sounds perfect for me. Sadly, it came with almost no heat at all. He gave me some sriracha sauce to amp up the taste, but that wasn't the flavor profile I was going for. It also came with only three, tiny, sad little basil leaves. Not enough to impart the big basil punch I order Thai food for. The chicken was tender. A big plus for offering brown rice. Theirs is nutty and cooked perfectly. It looks like prices may have increased since prior reviews. Entrees are $7 and Thai iced tea is $1.50. Still a good food value. I'd probably give them another shot and try curry. read more

They're a welcome addition to St. Johns ( it SUCKS out here, rough neighborhoods and mean people, no coffee, food or bars, no entertainment, no parks or river, no best bridge in Portland. It's. Just. Awful. It's a long drive, you'll hate it ;). The only reason you might want to brave St. Johns is Sila Thai. I thought I was enjoying Thai food all these years, nope. Sila set us straight with creative, amazing flavor combinations. Even standard fair like Pad Thai or Tom Yum are fresh, new, and delicious. The avocado curry is just wow. Most flavorful green curry I've ever had. I've had my fair share of decent thai food in california. $8 includes green curry with eggplant, bell peppers, basil, and choice of meat with side of rice (jasmine or brown). First bite of curry+rice, I was amazed at the taste. Also got the thai iced tea for $2, which was sweet and just what I wanted. Definitely will come back to try more dishes. Have been coming to this place since they first opened, I followed the owners from when they worked at "I like Thai food" cart on 10th and alder. It used to be my favorite cart and all of a sudden one day their food was just horrible and I couldn't figure out why, then I realized two very important people left to start their own cart: Sila Thai This is not just the best Thai food for your buck, but the best tasting Thai food that also happens to be one of the most reasonably priced! Almost all dishes are 6$ If it's your first time here I suggest you try the pad Thai, personally I like it mild because the sauce flavor is so unique and you might just miss it with too much spice. Secondly you must try anything with their sweet chili sauce, there's nothing like it and it's home made like all their sauces! This is my go to whenever I've brought a sad desk lunch that I can't deal with. You're guaranteed a filling and delicious meal at a great price and maybe even a joke while you're at it! Most Thai restaurants don't even come close to the kind of heat this place can hurl at you. I'm pretty much a fire breathing dragon when it comes to my heat intake, raw chillies with Desi Khanna being the order of the day. We ordered the yellow curry, Tom Kha & Pad Ki Mao. The tofu here is delectable, I'm guessing it's made locally or in house. It soaks up the flavors perfectly. The Tom Ka was my fav of the 3 dishes. Very tangy & distinct flavors. But oh if you order everything extra hot be prepared to take your lunch home. I couldn't even finish the leftovers for dinner. I may flavor my breakfast rice bowl with the leftover Tom Ka. Unless you grew up eating Bhut Jolokia in Assam be warned. This is the real deal Asian fire, not no cooking for Whitey kinda heat scale. read more
