What a shame. This place has great food, but it can be hit or miss. What's not hit or miss is the service - which has been horrible every time we try and eat here. We wait a few months, try again, and get the same crappy service. Missing items, old sides, etc. The last time we had takeout from here, they missed 1/2 the meat of our meal - that's half the check's worth! JARED AND ASHLEY REVIEW Sideways AT THE HARBOR! Full disclosure, this was my 3rd visit to the restaurant to eat, but the first two times were immediately after they had opened and I don't think making a review during that time was totally fair to the business. Last night Ashley and I arrived at 7:45pm, a Saturday. Although it was packed, there was enough seating for us to not have to wait more than a few minutes. The atmosphere is fun, decorations are great and the weather was nice. We called ahead, as you may also consider doing, and learned that they were out of ribs and baked potatoes for the evening. This move by the way, can spare you some headache before arrival if you are the kind of person the be disappointed by meat availability. Upon learning I was "sad" that there would be no ribs, the kitchen produced a "not on the menu" appetizer called "fried ribs" which were absolutely delightful. We were given so many, that afterwards we delivered leftovers to Eddie Drake! There was an appetizer we tried, called the Cowboy Caboodle, which was very unique. It's basically a "kitchen sink" BBQ egg roll with every kind of BBQ, mac n cheese, corn and more mixed together and deep fried. Original, fun, easy to eat and delicious. For dinner I went with the 3 meat, which was brisket, sausage and pulled pork. I also got the hatch chili Mac n cheese. By now, I was too full to eat much, but the brisket was tender, smoked great and easy to eat. Very soft. A smidgen salty, but that was because all my pieces had a lot of bark. The pulled pork was great! Soft, flavorful and great texture. It was a smidgen dry, but a dabble of sauce made it perfect. The sausage was amazing. Perfectly juicy, cooked just like I love. I was overwhelmed by the portions, to be honest. I couldn't finish my plate. Not even half. On the food scale, I would say this is "fantastic bbq" and when you factor in the ambience of the setting and indoor seating, it's a fun night time destination. I will be back. My only negative, and this is subjective, is that since we were there on a Saturday, there was a live band. We were sat in the first row of tables by the stage. The sound was so loud, I could not speak, or be heard, or even hear myself talk as I talked. lol! It was not unbearable, but for me it was a distraction. With that said, 99% of the customers there were loving it, bobbing their heads and singing along, I was the weird one, not them. lol The staff was accommodating, kind and kept my tea full. I like the ambiance at Sideways, especially on nice days and when they have open mic nights. The staff is always great. The menu is standard BBQ fare you'd expect with great cocktails. I've eaten here 5-6 times and the food is usually good, but the last 2 times I went home with a stomachache. Not sure why, and I'll note that I do have a sensitive stomach when it comes to seed oils, but I don't have the same issue at other BBQ places. This is why I haven't gone back and hence the 3 stars. read more

We ordered a pound of meat for two adults and two kids and got two slices of white bread. We asked for more, and it wasn't free. Seems like something that could be given away up to a point. Apparently that point is two slices. Whatever. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The service was standard. It's a bit loud inside, but honestly, it's better than the noise level in some other places around town. Happy to have another good BBQ place in Rockwall and another good restaurant in The Harbor. Went with a party of about 6. Three of us ordered baked potatoes. After about an hour and a half we were told that they were out of potatoes. After ordering and waiting an hour and a half. They told us we needed to order something else. After we ordered sandwiches to make it quick still waited another 40 min to get our food out. I came here for a blogger event that Boasting Boss Babes was hosting. I thought it was really nice of them to cater the event. It was just what I needed after a long day of taking photos lol. But anyways, they came out with trays filled with meat. They had sausage, pork, and ribs. Trey also brought out some BBQ nachos ( this was my favorite). All in all it was a pretty good restaurant. And a barbecue restaurant that DOES NOT serve baked beans tho?????!!! Yeah ok. The macaroni and cheese is extremely BLAND and gross. The beans they served looked like vomit, the ribs were BAD. I've been here a bunch and always enjoy it, but this review is for yesterday. I called and stated I was on my way and needed 5lbs of brisket. Laura said, no prob, we will have it ready for you. I picked it up around 2:15pm to be served around 5pm. Also took with me a quart of pinto beans. They sent me with sauce, pickles & onions, peppers, and bread. OMG, the brisket was literally the best ever. My dad kept saying, "where is this from again? It has such a great Smokey flavor!" I always order turkey when I'm there (also delicious), but if you're ever needing dinner for an important group, in a pinch, this is the way to go! $20 a lb, but it is every bit of worth it. Did my first take-out /visit Friday night. Ordered on the phone with a seemingly capable person. When picking up they tried to put hot food in same bag as cold food - seems to defeat the purpose no? Get home and discover they forgot to give me a brisket sandwich (+/-$10) and there was no BBQ sauce. How does that happen? BBQ restaurant does not put sauce in with to-go? I called back to advise about the missing item and was told it would be refunded off card. No such luck. Messaged on FB to call me but no response. So let's get to the meat of the matter - the food I did get was hit and miss. Brisket was solid. Ribs tasted like they'd been held too long or boiled first. Sides were OK. Q is expensive enough and when you do not get what you expect it leaves you unsure of a revisit. I'd like to support local but this episode has tried my patience. read more

Visited the restaurant on Saturday. Nice location. Awesome view of the lake. There are also a few other nice places to eat near this place as well - so lots to choose from in the harbor area. Nice open atmosphere. BBQ was pretty tasty. We probably will not go back though for the following reasons - Service was extremely slow. Waitress said the kitchen was backed up and apologized for the long wait. I would suggest that in these situations that the staff be trained to offer customers who have to wait for food some chips, bread, crackers... anything - especially when the customer says "we are pretty hungry so how long will it take?" Also, there seemed to be a couple of different tables taken up by employees. I saw one waiter finishing off a beer before going back to his tables, one waitress brought her dog to work and was hanging out at a table, and a couple others seemed to be just hanging out. Not really a big deal - but as a customer coming in we had to be seated at a really odd placed table on an aisle when there were a couple good tables being used by staff. Does not seem cool to do during buys hours. Also, a very CREEPY thing was when a large man, he may be the manager, came around to check on how things were going for us he came up from behind me and laid his hand on my back and asked "How is everything here?" - I am a guy and I do not mean to imply he was being frisky - it was just odd. I am not one of those people who freak if anyone touched them - but even then this is a little creepy - especially if someone does not see if coming. Pretty good BBQ. We ordered the Gut Tickler which is their loaded baked potato and the Bettermost sandwich which has brisket, pulled pork and sliced sausage in it. I'll be honest, this was my way to try 3 meats. The sandwich was loaded w meat. I had to pull some off to eat it. Very good sandwich. They have two sauces on the table, normal and spicy. They are a little liquid-y as I prefer thick sauces and it's a vinegar base, but good. Spicy was not very spicy. We also ordered the hatch chili Mac n cheese. I think I found one chili in the whole thing. Would not order it again. Wait staff is a little casual as one waitress repeatedly hollered at other waitresses over our table. Elected to sit outside at a shaded table overlooking Lake Hubbard. Seated promptly. Was expertly served by two female servers (mostly by Kailey), both who were friendly, efficient, polite and knowledgeable) and a joy to talk to. Drinks arrived promptly. My wife had a pork taco which she thoroughly enjoyed. I had the barbeque pork sandwich which was loaded with meat, and with the addition of the barbeque sauce at the table was juicy, moist and very flavorful. Since we both ordered the same side dish (mac & cheese), our server advised us to instead order one larger side to share............which was a terrific idea.
