Sitting on the beautiful harbor in Rockwall, Texas is this awesome restaurant! We sat down and had the sweetest waitresses. She brought out drinks first and then we ordered our food. The food was delicious! I don't recall the name, but there is a large egg roll type thing that tasted amazing! It's a must try! On top of the amazing food, beautiful view of the harbor, and the great service, I have to mention that while I was there, I left my credit card behind by accident. I realized I left it there after they closed. My flight back to LA was the following morning. I called and spoke with Laura, their manager, and she was kind enough to mail out my credit card to me. I couldn't have been happier with my Brisket Salad the helping was generous and that is saying a lot for BBQ! The flavor was just as good and the salad portion was all fresh veggies. The cocktail was not too sweet and had just the right amount of alcohol. The staff was very nice and the time it took to receive our food and drinks was quick. Ok. After trying to get service across the way at Brass Tap for over 20 min. Left and went across the way to here. Same thing. Despite telling the bartender what we experienced at Brass Tap we ended up having to self service at the bar here. Where we met Jordan. Despite multiple waitress's on the patio. Again think we were invisible seriously. But finally the bartender realized we still hadn't had a waitress come by after 20 min she came out of the bar and took our order herself. I had a great time here! There was a live band who I really enjoyed. Kailey our server was beyond awesome. Great personality, extremely helpful with recommendations and accommodating. I ordered the The Gut Tickler which I was so tickled by the name. They were out of baked potatoes so I opted for fries/wedges AND IT WAS SO GOOD! I couldn't finish the whole meal. We came to sideways due to their statements about being the best barbecue in the area and great drinks. This was far from that. We had a table of 5 and we almost all got something different to try because we thought it sounded good and the pictures on their site! Looked good! HEADS UP, nothing looks like their photos and their food was mediocre at best. The fried pickles were lack luster. The brisket baked potato was unseasoned and very bland. The meat was dry and their "BBQ" sauces just taste like water downed A1. The place was a little dead and quiet so we were expecting decent service which also didn't happen. Our server was terrible sadly. She barely came to our table. Our drinks came out 10 min apart for just being water and sodas. Our food came out in the same manner which was no good. Hate to give a 1 star review... saw this place the night before and it looked lively, and had a live band. Next day, came here with 5 coworkers during lunch (we had an hour and a half). The restaurant was short staffed. Averagely busy. But being short staffed still didn't justify how exceptionally bad the service was.. we waited for over an hour after we ordered. Saw other tables getting their food even though they ordered after us. Waters were never refilled. Finally after about an hour, we went to cancel our order. We had to be back at the work conference by a certain time. There was a gentleman that did try to be helpful and did comp some items even though it wasn't his problem to deal with. He had made a comment that he was assigned to work in the bar area but was just helping the kitchen and waiting staff. We had to take our food to go since we had to be back for the conference. Our waitress never checked on us and never told us what was going on with our order. The order was completely wrong and most of us were missing at least one item from our plate. One of us didn't even get their food, so she just took a banana pudding that was in the bag that no one was ordered. Again the gentleman from the bar was truly trying to help. But the waitress did nothing but say sorry as we walked out and we never even saw a manager. With all that being said, the food we did get wasn't bad. This place has amazing food, great ambiance, and sometimes live music! My boyfriend and I checked it out for date night and wasn't disappointed. The food was so good & the service was phenomenal. For an appetizer we got the Cowboy Caboodle: fried egg roll with pork, more meat, corn, cream cheese. It was heavenly! Crispy crunch on the outside and savory goodness on the inside. Then for dinner I got pulled pork sandwich and loaded potato. It was amazing! I loved that we had our own bbq sauces on the table so we could put our own amount of bbq sauce on our sandwich and the pulled pork meat was so good. The loaded potato was delicious too! Bottom Line: A festive barbecue spot with waiter/waitress service and special events many nights. I was staying at the Hilton next door so Sideways was a convenient place to grab dinner on a Tuesday night. Tuesday night is apparently open mic night so please don't say I didn't warn you. We had a big crowd and we were able to slide several tables together. Because we had a big group, everything was slow but I really don't blame that on the restaurant - I know a table for twelve-ish when you aren't expecting it can be tough to serve. Our waitress was friendly and patient with the group but we had to be patient with her too since she was often sight-unseen for long periods of time. There were so many delicious things on the menu but what appealed to me most was the special - the beef rib. I'd never had a beef rib and I don't have the opportunity to have one often so I jumped on that. It was a fun experience and tasty but I would probably get something different next time. The French fries were good but the slice of white bread I treated as cultural garnish. I don't think I've seen or eaten white bread in years! The one thing that was odd about Sideways is the drink situation. It wasn't clear to us if we were supposed to go up and get our own refills or if the wait staff was supposed to get our refills. We often had empty cups. The same was true for the bar. Since we were already keeping our waitress quite busy we didn't want to overtask her but we also didn't want to step on her toes. I'm not sure how this place does it, but it was 92 degrees F outside, and this establishment had all the windows/doors open, and it was a really pleasant 70-something degrees inside the restaurant!!! It was really nice. Also, the loaded fries are a marvel in potato possibilities. These potato pieces were engineered to hold toppings. The toppings on the loaded fries were so good! I didn't catch our server's name, but this guy was on it! He wasn't overly anything... he was just there when we needed him. This was our second time at Sideways. Our first visit the food and drinks were fantastic. Yesterday we both got pulled pork and it was so greasy we couldn't eat it. A defunct bar has been reinvented as Sideways BBQ, and the decor is perfectly suited for this great new Q hotspot! Sit inside w views of the lake and the Harbor pedestrians - or sit outside if the weather is nice. There is room for Corn-Hole, and you can sit at the well stocked bar if you aren't hungry. The house-special mixed drinks were great, and priced teadonably. I particularly liked the 'Vodkita' - which was a mojito variation. And YES, the BBQ was really good! Dry-rubbed (as opposed to sloppy-wet w sauce), the flavor was just right. The smoked chicken was moist and good. The brisket and pork-ribs had a perfect bark; flavorful and crisp - without being too dry to enjoy! They only have beef ribs 2 days per week, and sadly - Saturday is not one of them. That is the main readon I withheld the 5th star. Service was prompt and orders were accurate. One of the owners stopped by our table to greet us (always a nice touch). Sideways may be a great bar, but we will never know. We wanted BBQ for dinner. Two of us got pulled pork, and it was the most disgusting food I've been served in years...maybe ever. The "pork" was mostly fat, served in a deep puddle of grease, dripping wet. We tried to eat a little, but it was just awful. Six hours later, my stomach is still upset from the few bites I ate, and the lingering taste gives periodic rise to waves of nausea. We couldn't finish much of the meal. The sides were not sickening, but were not very good. There was enough pepper on the Mac & Cheese to choke a horse. Maybe that's where the meat came from. The service was adequate. To the credit of the server there was an offer to take the meals off the bill. The ambiance is full bar, with food as an afterthought. The music was too loud for casual conversation. I rarely leave a poor review, but based upon the hype I had heard for Sideways, I was VERY disappointed. I will start with the only redeeming point... a beautiful sunset over Lake Ray Hubbard. Now for the disappointments. First we went on a Monday night not aware that they had a very limited menu only appetizers, salads, and brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, tacos, nachos and burritos. I ordered the brisket sandwich, a half pound of ribs, and sideways fries. The brisket tasted like burnt meat, I burped it up all night. Very over cooked and not at all moist. It was served on a toasted homemade bun that was tasty, especially dripped in the "hot" bbq sauce. I use quotation marks because it was not at all hot. The ribs, likewise, seemed over cooked, tough and again tasted burnt rather than smoked. The fries were very good. Our out of town guests ordered the pulled pork sandwich and said that the meat had no flavor. They also had side salads and said were good. I usually will give a restaurant a second chance, but with so many other great BBQ options around, I do not plan to return. I can only surmise that there are a lot of folks with bad taste to keep this place open. As a Certified Kansas City BBQ Judge, I know good BBQ and this is not it. read more

Stopped at Sideways for some delicious BBQ on the Harbor. We ordered a two meat and two side meal to share. The moist brisket was fantastic, easily cut with a fork and while it has a slight layer of fat it wasn't overbearing and added to the flavor. The pulled pork was a heaping pile and flavored great with a little charred edge. The ranch and bacon potato salad had some bacon pieces that were inedible but the consistency and taste were great. The mac n cheese didn't looked appealing when it came out but the smothered cheese shells were a perfect addition to the meat. The plate comes with sliced onions, jalepenos and pickles. The pickles are great with a slight spicey taste. The BBQ sauce was yummy but we definitely had to ask for more to accommodate the amount of meat. The only complaints were the original wait at the table to have our server arrive and the drink order. When ordering a red wine she brought over a Chardonnay which was clearly incorrect upon viewing the glass. She attempted to correct the mistake by bringing me the correct glass I ordered but on the second attempt brought a pinot rose, again not the red I had originally ordered. Rather than correct her again I drank the wine and focused on the grub. The live music was an excellent touch to the evening which we were delighted by considering many places are limiting this during COVID. Would definitely return here again. read more

Beware..this place has a guy that is known by the entire staff that makes racist, homophobic, and mysoginist remarks to other people and they refuse to do anything about it. He is a vet that they claim has ptsd and they allow him to make any comment without repercussions. He called women at the bar b**** and when confronted the whole staff and manager told us to ignore it because he is known for this. Four other people told us that that he does this all the time and they allow it. I have respect for veterans and understand PTSD. If that is the case you should limit him to drinks or not serve him at all because he is most likely on medication. read more

I would give four and a half stars... Brittney was a bubbly wonderful server. I know after having two months off coming back meant a lot to her. The loaded with brisket baked potato was delicious- I asked for the butter on the side. Came with regular and spicy bbq sauce. Food five stars My date got the two meat plate and it was enough for two! Highly recommend the ribs. (Pork) Concerns: all of a sudden the $10 drinks were in something close to a shot glass. I loved the atmosphere of the place! It was a really nice place, good music, cool stage, the waiters were the absolute best, super respectful, informative, attentive and polite. I loved the country feel to it especially in Rockwall it's super hard to find so it was a nice surprise to find. The only part I feel really lacked was the flavor of the meat, and the bbq. Now we ordered some loaded potato Fries and they were AMAZING! Cheese, chives, jalapeños and bacon crumbles over potato wedges, dipped in ranch ‍. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich, i loved the bread it was on, but the meat just didn't have much flavor to it, good quality meat just no flavor. My husband got the chopped brisket and jalapeño sausage with a side of mac and cheese. He didn't seem to have an issue but wasn't overly impressed either. I tried the jalapeño sausage and you could definitely taste the smoke on it but it was almost overwhelming, it lingered in my mouth and I didn't enjoy it honestly. The bbq sauce didn't add to the experience at all either which was disappointing. I wanted to enjoy the food so badly but if you're looking for a good local spot for hang out and drinks that may be a better option than stopping in for a bite. Visited the restaurant on Saturday. Nice location. Awesome view of the lake. There are also a few other nice places to eat near this place as well - so lots to choose from in the harbor area. Nice open atmosphere. BBQ was pretty tasty. We probably will not go back though for the following reasons - Service was extremely slow. Waitress said the kitchen was backed up and apologized for the long wait. I would suggest that in these situations that the staff be trained to offer customers who have to wait for food some chips, bread, crackers... anything - especially when the customer says "we are pretty hungry so how long will it take?" Also, there seemed to be a couple of different tables taken up by employees. I saw one waiter finishing off a beer before going back to his tables, one waitress brought her dog to work and was hanging out at a table, and a couple others seemed to be just hanging out. Not really a big deal - but as a customer coming in we had to be seated at a really odd placed table on an aisle when there were a couple good tables being used by staff. Does not seem cool to do during buys hours. Also, a very CREEPY thing was when a large man, he may be the manager, came around to check on how things were going for us he came up from behind me and laid his hand on my back and asked "How is everything here?" - I am a guy and I do not mean to imply he was being frisky - it was just odd. I am not one of those people who freak if anyone touched them - but even then this is a little creepy - especially if someone does not see if coming. The atmosphere is great and I love the vibe here. With that said, we didn't have a good experience here a year ago so we decided to try again. Again- the atmosphere is great here!! Unfortunately, from the time we sat down to the time we left was not a good experience at all. There were lots of waitresses and they were all very nice. I'm not sure what the hiccup was but everything was in slooooow motion. It took 15 minutes to get waters and a tea. It took another 30 minutes plus to get 2 appetizers and another 25 plus minutes to get 3 bbq sandwiches and 1 plate. Again it was not busy and plenty of waitresses. The appetizers were ok at best. The Loaded sidewinder fries looked great - tasted ok. The pimento cheese stuffed jalapeños were probably the best thing we tasted and they were ok at best. When the plate and sandwiches came out I knew we were in trouble. The meat plate looked like a kids plate. They put a lot of brisket on the sandwiches which is great. Unfortunately- you could tell by looking at it how dried out the meat was. The Ribs were the size of my fore finger. I ordered 1/2 lbs on the brisket and it was maybe a 1/4 lbs of meat. I ordered the moist brisket and a 1/3 of it was gone from the amount of fat. There was literally 20-30% meat on the rib from with you would normally expect. I thought ok - these must be really good because it's not about the size or quantity but the quality of the food. Thankfully , it was a small portion. The meat - ribs were not good at all. The flavor is just a big miss! I give the meat a 1 -1.5 out of 10. I wanted to drown it with the bbq sauce but it tasted more like vinegar than actual bbq sauce. The texture of the sauce was like water - really bad all the way around. The sides were awful. The waitress warned me not to order the coleslaw but I did. She was right. It was worse than awful. The green beans were bad. They tasted like wet - soggy toothpicks. The cream of corn was ok ( no flavor) and the Mac n cheese was thick - pasty and very very bland. I would come here for the entertainment and the cold beer. If your looking for good - quality bbq ) or just edible bbq) - this place is not your joint. I travel for a living and eat out mostly. I've eaten at most the great bbq places we all know here in TX alone. I'm not comparing this place to those restaurants- I know better than that. After having a pizza and a few drinks in Rockwall we heard there was good music and drinks here. Walked in and noticed it was more of a night club then restaurant/bar. The "manager" on duty was drunk and got into some he said/she said with a friend in our group. Another manager admitted she had been drinking but he couldn't do anything about it because he works for her. Then a group of younger men told my husband to leave the bar and started bowing up. Even if the bouncers are paid, the behavior was highly unprofessional. I leave this review for anyone with any class or is over the age of 21: spend your money and evenings at any of the other many fun locations around rockwall. This place is garbage. We have been to many BBQ places in the DFW metroplex and Sideways smashed all BBQ spots we've been to. Their ribs are very flavorful and tender. Then they have the fried version that just speaks to your soul. The moist brisket is exactly that...tender moist with a pepper spice. The jalapeño sausage just melts in your mouth. Pinto beans with brisket in it Mac and cheese so cheesy. Oh and the staff!!!!! Shelby is the best!!!!! Laura the GM made sure to come see us being our first time!!!
