Saturday morning and this place was busy. The indoor seating was pretty small and line was long when I was there. The pastries they have on the shelf looked tasty. I got a latte and it was great. Service at the counter was awesome. I ordered my coffee to go so I had to wait close to the counter since the place was pretty loud and I won't be able to hear my name called. Otherwise, they'll bring your coffee to your table. More seats on the patio and also towards the back with heaters. Love the vibe. Just be prepared for the busyness. I think this is a perfect spot for a casual weekend brunch! Warning, they don't have a parking lot and it looks like a normal house so you might have trouble finding it. But once you find it, it's so cute! It's such a cute, inviting, eclectic spot. There's indoor, outdoor, back patio type seating. The mismatched furniture and vintage decorations give it such a fun charming vibe. You order at the counter then find a seat. Silverware, water, and condiments are self serve. I got the hanger steak sandwich and it's one of the best I've ever had! Perfect medium rare and it was still juicy. The arugula gives it a nice touch. They give you a choice of dip for the fries and I got blue cheese which was really yummy. It had a brightness to it which I liked. The pours for the rosé were heavy which I loved! To the much publicized Sideboard with a KQED segment, this place was busy yet this didn't deter the workers from providing customers with attentive service. This location was a hidden gem for a 1st time visitor bc there isn't a sign in front of the house, fortunately friends who have gone before led the way. Orders: Chai tea-a little weak in chai spice so I felt it could have been better. What fell short on flavor was compensated with the huge cup size. English Muffin w/apricot jam-the English muffin that looked like a huge biscuit had all the home made components of a delicious muffin. Despite this being such a simple item, Sideboard really satisfied my carb intake. Love coming here and the fact they have so much seating inside and outside. Enjoyed their breakfast sandwich. I am a vanilla syrup person and was bummed they have no syrups at all but the mocha was yummy. The line to get to the cashier is probably the worst part about the place. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, though we came mid-day around 3:30 so it wasn't busy. I ordered the grilled chicken breast sandwich. The chicken breast, while thick, was on the smaller side, which left a good chunk of bread on both ends. For the price, I kind of expected a slightly bigger piece of chicken. That said, the roll was super soft and delicious, possibly the best sandwich roll I've had in a while. The chicken itself was juicy and not dry, and the pesto spread paired really well with it. The sandwich overall was still very tasty. The homemade potato chips were also solid. Nice sprinkle of salt in almost every bite. Overall, I give this place a 4.5/5. This place was hard to find at first and from the looks of a few people walking by asking me if this was "Sideboard," I don't think I was alone. Could have put up another big sign to let us non locals know. Haha Once inside, you are greeted by a bunch of pastries and menus. I wasn't particularly hungry but saw some heirloom beet salad with goat cheese that I had to try. It surely did not dissapoint. I added some chicken but for the amount of chicken they gave, the extra charge should be less. Overall, it was jam packed and you had to get your own water and silverware. My friend suggested we go here for brunch on a Friday. It was pretty busy around 11 so we ended up standing in line for a bit. Similar to a diner, you order at the counter, receive a table card with a cute food-related pun, and the food is delivered to you. With indoor and outdoor seating, we were able to find a table fairly quickly despite it being busy. I ended up getting the breakfast mac (part of the weekday breakfast menu that can be ordered from until 2). It was nothing like anything I've had before and I really enjoyed it. Having a wonderfully runny egg over bacon mac and cheese elevated the mac and cheese. It wasn't super cheese, but still fairly rich with the egg. I liked that each bite was varied. 9/10 I also got a piece of the gluten free carrot cake to go for a friend. While not a huge fan of carrot cake personally, I can appreciate the balance of the cream cheese frosting with the moist cake. It is on the denser side, but with it not being super sweet, I didn't mind the texture. 7/10 (from someone who doesn't like carrot cake) I really loved the environment. It was a great place to catch up with friends and talk. They also allow laptop's at community tables. If I lived closer, I could see it being a place to order a coffee or tea and work if you don't mind the noise of most other guests not working. I'm really bummed about this particular review. I am so on the fence that I do think I will revisit them a couple of more times to get a more consistent review. I was here today having lunch with my friends. It's interesting because while it does look like a place that you would go in and sit down and have your order taken by a server, it is not that kind of setup. I stood in line for about 7 minutes while one register person took everyone's orders. When I went to order decaf coffee I was told that they do not have drip coffee and forced to purchase an Americano that was decaf as ot was my only option. I ordered the decaf Americano, gazpacho soup and the bahn mi salad. Everything was more of a get-up-and-get it yourself. Kind of vibe with the exception of when they bring you your food and beverage. So basically, if you want any water or utensils or condiments, you have to get-up-and-get them yourself. For some reason, the the gazpacho did not taste good to me at all, as it was heavy on the taste of vinegar and very sour. The decaf Americano was just that nothing special. The Bahn mi salad originally came out as a sandwich and the server realized they had made a mistake. No problem, I get it mistakes happen. I will say that the server and the service was 5 stars. Unfortunately, I felt that the food was at best a 3 star. Unfortunately, I feel as though the only thing that was 5 stars was the service. The rating I felt it deserved during this experience was a 2.5 but gave them 3 stars. I may come back to give them another try, but not anytime soon. I think I was looking more for a restaurant type of atmosphere, and that wasn't what I got. And when you mix that with the food experience, I felt they deserved at 2.5 I'm truly hoping for a better experience next time. read more

We had plato mexicano, breakfast pudding, ham and cheese melt on homemade muffins. Also ordered half bucket of the fried chicken. Mimosas,latte and hot chocolate. We had a few of us in the group. We arrived when it was busy 11am more or less. Since we were new we had questions about the menu the dishes and of course anyone standing in line was a bit annoyed. But we kept on ordering and finally paid. Food came out fresh,hot and satisfying. The servers name was Brian such a kind man. I ordered the warm kale salad and wow--absolutely amazing! It even came with a soft-boiled egg, which was the perfect touch. We sat right next to the water fountain, and the sound of the water made the whole meal feel so relaxing and peaceful. I accidentally left my fanny pack in the bathroom, and when I went back to look for it, someone had kindly placed it just outside the door. I had only ever been to the Lafayette location, so when I saw they had one in Danville (I don't walk around there too often!), I took my husband here for brunch. I'm glad we got there when we did because it filled up FAST! They have lots of out door seating with heaters spread throughout the area, as well as some indoor seating. The decor is super cute, the staff is very quick with your order, & the menu options are awesome! Be sure to grab your own silverware, napkins, water, & a to-go box (if needed) while inside, since it is all self serve. We ordered the tofu Banh mi sammie & the chilaquiles, along with a pineapple ginger agua fresca & a cappuccino. Everything had such amazing flavor! We visited Sideboard for the first time in the early evening (5 pm ish) hours on a Monday. A few other tables were taken, but the patio area is so large we had lots of space to ourselves. We brought 2 dogs and a small baby and felt comfortable here due to the friendly staff and spacious patio, in addition to being out of the direct sun. We ordered at the counter and with some recommendations from the staff, got the special, a salad, and two drinks (house made lemonade & root beer). We thought the prices were super reasonable and the portions were generous. Everything tasted spectacular and we had a really lovely outing - our first post baby dinner out which was a very positive experience and makes us ready for more! Hubby and I rewarded ourselves to Sideboard after our little 8mi bike ride on Iron Horse Trail. We followed GPS, but was a little "lost" when we didn't see the signage for "Sideboard" but noticed some tables with people seated on the porch. We figured this must be it, so we parked and walked to the little alleyway with tables around that led to the entrance on the left hand side. Found it! Menus are located right at the entrance. Gazed at the menu for a little bit before grabbing a table and hubby went inside to order at the counter. This is not a server type of establishment, but they help bus your table afterwards. Utensils, water, napkins, straws are all located on the left back wall or inside near the counter (I believe that's what the server said). Restrooms are in the back at the end of the alley walkway. -Raspberry Lemonade (5/5): Flavorful with a perfect balance of tart and sweetness -Pineapple Ginger Agua Fresca (3.5/5): Lighter side of flavor, no ginger taste whatsoever, but refreshing -Roasted Pink and Gold Beet Salad (3.5/5): Loved the plating with a big chunk of Point Reyes Blue Cheese on top. Citrus vinaigrette was pretty bland and we definitely needed more to coat our greens. The beets were perfect, but the grapefruit threw off the flavor profile of the dish, so we ate them separately. Would have been fantastic with candied walnuts/pecans. -BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich (5/5): Almost drowned in BBQ sauce and loaded with more pulled pork than we could eat, this was perfect with the slaw and crispy fries. There are many tables that are for self seating. It's got coffee shops vibes where you can sit relax, enjoy a drink and bite while reading a book or doing some work. Orders are taken at the counter. There is a good selection of breakfast items, sandwiches as well as pastries, snacks. There are coffees, teas, beers, wines and some mixed drinks to choose from. We got the pulled pork sandwich which was good. The pulled pork was cooked well and the flavor was great. The overall balance was good with a bit of cole slaw and good bread. We had a side of fries which was fine but nothing spectacular about the fries. I ended up getting a mimosa too which was delicious. The exterior had a lot of seating along the sides and back patio. They are all shaded and comfy with some heat lamps on cooler days. They provided blankets too which was a great touch. Though I didn't need it, the doggie treats were so cute and also another great touch. The outdoor seating ambiance was lovely too. Mark out the items sold out since your menu is on a blackboard written in chalk. So we get in our order, got a number, and found seating in the back (which was way larger than I expected). We got a carrot cake and blueberry cheesecake to share along with our drinks. My coffee was freshly pressed with grounds from Guatemala that had a nice smooth rich flavor and aroma. The pastries were good the cheesecake was not too dense but no flavor of blueberries until you ate the one fresh berry on top. The carrot cake had a nice texture with hints of cinnamon. A great hidden gem to have a nice snack and drinks. Apparently they also serve food and sandwiches; so there may be another visit next time we're in the area. read more

We've been going to Sideboard since they were located on Hartz Avenue. We love their food, but their service leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered bacon scramble for my husband, an English Muffin, and an overnight Oats for myself. The coffee and my husband's scramble came out promptly, but the English muffin took at least 20 minutes. He was done with his breakfast well before we received it. I had to ask two servers before I received it. Once it got there, it was delicious, but more as a dessert than a side dish with breakfast. My overnight oats weren't as good as the one I had last weekend and I specifically asked if they were made last night. Was told there were, but they weren't. Found a sticker that had 3/12 under the cup. So it was two days old and not as good or fresh. read more

Had the best time here with my family on a Saturday morning in March. We loved trying the different meals and baked goods. The most memorable items were the breakfast Mac n cheese and the English muffin! The staff were helpful and friendly, and I like that they have utensils and condiments available for self-serve. There was a line when we arrived, many people standing to wait, standing to order, and parties of people seated at the tables both indoor and out. The wait to order didn't seem unbearable. You order and pay inside at the front. You will receive a number and you seat yourself - there are a couple shared areas where you'll be able to get self served water, utensils, and condiments such as their very wide array of hot sauces to select from. Seating: there are small tables for smaller parties or solo visitors and there are larger family style tables where it is like communal seating. There is a rule they have for those who come w/ laptops to keep their stay to a minimum if they are there during heightened business hours. This is to help keep the flow of customers who dine in, a spot to sit after ordering. Nice place to be on a nice day. I like the outdoor and indoor / outdoor dining they have. It feels like you're in someone's backyard or house, it is so homey here - you really kind of feel like you're part of the community or neighborhood when here. We came here on a weekend evening and enjoyed our meal here. The atmosphere is casual with "vintage" plates, cups, tables, chairs. As my partner says, it's like they went to a thrift store and purchased one of everything, since most things are mix-matched. It was a hot day, and there was some AC in the restaurant, but since the doors are open, the air is sort of warm. I think this place (and the environment) could benefit from closing the door. Though there is an outdoor seating area that's also pretty nice. We ordered a steak sandwich, a tostada sandwich, an order of tater tots, and had a sour beer and watermelon mint juice. The food took a little long to come out, but the food was great when it came out. The tostada salad was very generous and the corn tostada was crispy and very good. The beans complimented the cheese and sauces well. My partner liked the steak sandwich at first and thought everything was fresh. But he said he got tired of the flavors of it, and felt like there could have been more sauce to it. The tater tots were not traditional tater tots. They are more like fried mashed potato balls. They were tasty, made with fresh ranch on the side. But I think that they could have posted photos of the dishes, especially when they are not typical of what the dish is. The ranch and ketchup were both fresh and tasted like it was made in house. Overall, we are happy we came here and would come back.
