I came to check this place out on National BBQ Day! I'm so glad I did! Unfortunately I came an hour before closing time and I wasn't able to get the 2lbs of brisket that I wanted but settled for chopped beef. Don't get the pulled pork! Shorty's is really close to my house, which is very convenient. However it's pretty out of the way for anyone that doesn't live in my neighborhood so unless you happen to be hungry on highway 80 crossing into Forney and are unaware of all restaurants ahead, you'll probably never stop there. Nah, that's not true. I'll give you a reason to go out of your way... chopped beef potato. I've only had a few things here, chopped beef sandwich, chopped beef potato, and a pulled pork sandwich. Other than the meats (which there are several more I've not tried yet) they offer beans/chips for sides... and that's pretty much it. So it's a little old school (of course the place is made out of what used to be a gas station or small truckstop of some sort so old school fits well here). The pulled pork was rather bland and inconsistent. Good pulled pork is supposed to be juicy and flavorful, but I've tried it twice now at Shorty's and both times it was soft in some bites and harder to chew in other bites with a flavor that just didn't exist. The chopped beef on the other hand, is insanely good. It's like two different people are in charge of smoking the beef and the pork. Or maybe the one person doing it is just a beef man. I don't know the ins and outs of how they cook it, all I know is the chopped beef is delicious. Okay on a sandwich, but REALLY great on a potato. The sauce is good too, and they load the potato up with everything for you. Sometimes they close the drive thru at night when they're still open which is a little odd. This has been my family's favorite local BBQ place for the last 10 years but I've finally gotten tired of the poor service. I almost stopped going last year when I went to get two pounds of BBQ and the owner yelled at me telling me that she had to provide BBQ for catering orders and I should know better than to get two pounds of BBQ on a graduation weekend. Um, what?!? Another time I was shorted nearly half a pound of BBQ. In the past, each time, they tried to right the wrong. Last Saturday was the last straw for me. Okay, I used to be a true Shorty's fan. The BBQ used to be the real deal, but sadly it has not been for quite some time. I will not be back after today. I went with my son for lunch. He ordered the loaded baked potato and I ordered sliced brisket sandwich. The brisket sandwich was the strangest I have ever had. The meat was rolled and put on the bun. It gave the appearance of a thick sandwich. I unrolled my brisket slices and started to take a bite out of my sandwich. The brisket was tough and chewy. The brisket did not taste smoked, as a matter of fact it tasted like it had been cooked in an oven. My son asked me to try his loaded potato because he said it didn't taste like BBQ. The chopped brisket tasted greasy and no smoke taste whatsoever. We did not finish our food and left. I was raised on BBQ and know the difference between real smoked, melt in your mouth, perfect bark, BBQ brisket and well whatever this was...well it wasn't it! This place has gone down hill fast. I have been here three time all 3 time the food was really bad. They are selling Roast Beef and trying to call it sliced brisket. Really good people. Really bad BBQ. Brisket was lighly smoked and chewy. Chicken was dry and tasteless. Smoked cabbage was the highlight of the sides lineup and was just ok. I will say the sauce was tangy with the caveat that I don't use much sauce unless the BBQ is subpar. The folks were so nice I'll try it again. Anybody can have an off day.
