Out of all of the boba chains, I usually say Sharetea is a safe bet for good boba in cities that aren't known for boba, but sadly, my milk tea with 50% sugar tasted like water and the boba was a bit tough. I was optimistic as it looked like lots of people were buying it, but even my boyfriend's fruit drink was way too sweet for 30% sweetness. Good, solid boba tea shop in Chinatown DC with good customer service. I wanted to see the difference between the Hokkaido & Okinawa milk teas. The boba itself was a little more firm than some tapioca pearls I've tried, but the chewy texture was still very on par with my expectations for boba. The Hokkaido is described as "caramel toffee" flavored and there was a bit of burnt caramel or toffee flavor to it, a tad on the sweet-butter side. The Okinawa tea was described as "roasted brown sugar" and it did taste of brown sugar. Mostly, both of them were reminiscent of a brown sugary black tea drink but the flavors were great for a black tea and milk boba drink. Ordered a fresh milk drink too just to test out one of their fresh milk teas--matcha fresh milk tea, added pudding and red bean to that one. Notes: -They generally sweeten their drinks with a liquid fructose, unless the drink has the word "honey" in it, then that means it's flavored with honey. When you order, you'll have the option to alter the level of sweetness, but keep in mind: if you see the word "sugar" it means "liquid fructose and if you see the word "honey sugar" they just mean honey. -Milk teas are made with a creamer I believe, versus the "fresh milk" teas are made with actual milk. read more

Mmmm the aroma in this tea shop as soon as you come in is so delightful! I got excited to get my own bubble tea right away. The number of people who come in even minutes away from closing time definitely tells you you've hit the jackpot. The shop has very humble spot by Chinatown we almost missed it. I appreciate that they have always managed to keep the store clean and orderly despite the good amount of customers that they have. The staff are very nice and pleasant too even though they're almost always so busy. As for their teas, they tastes sooo sooo good. I've tried numerous bubble tea shops and this one is definitely in my top 5. The bobas are nice and chewy, the bubble teas have a good balance of bitterness-sweetness and are not overly diluted with water. There is a perfect amount of cream to the bubble teas. Be ready to wait for a while, this place is usually packed!!! Not a lot of room inside so maybe not the best idea to come when it's pouring down (like I did), since you might need to wait outside. Only a couple of stools available to sit inside but I wouldn't plan on sitting here. It's about time DC gets a boba spot that is pretty convenient to get to! Great variety of teas, both fruit and milk based - also discovered their milk teas are non dairy unless you get the drinks under Fresh Milk. My first time there was a let down as they gave me the mango green tea creama and I ordered matcha green tea creama. I didn't want to make a big fuss about it because I knew I was going to be back anyway and would be able to try it. I've tried the oolong milk tea and the regular green milk tea and both were delicious (as you can see I've been here many times already) - might be a convert to the milk drinks now. My husband and I came here on the grand opening and happened to be their first official customers and which they were giving their original milk tea bobas to the first 100 customers - very good and I usually don't gravitate towards the milk teas. I did come here on my way after work and there was a group of 6 people in front of me. I didn't think I was going to be waiting too long because usually I've had good experiences with boba places having long lines but receiving my drinks in a timely manner. I waited 20 minutes in line for my drink which was a little irritating and I could tell the few people after me were getting antsy. I do recommend them getting those automatic shakers that they have at other boba shops where you can place two drinks in at a time and they shake it for you. That might be something to consider as they are expanding. It does get pretty cramped in there and a place not to hang out and more grab n go. I have had friends that tried to go during the lunch period and decided to leave given the line was too long, but it's expected with the warm weather. Thank goodness there is a decent bubble tea shop in this part of DC. IMHO, a good bubble tea shop does these three things well: 1. Real brewed tea and not made from powder 2. Quality tapioca pearls 3. Creative drink mixes I stopped in here with some co-workers on this hot July day and was very pleased with my beverage. Whenever I visit a new boba place, I usually stick with the classic milk tea (oolong being my favorite), 1/2 sugar, light ice, and the traditional boba topping. The tea base was refreshing and I always appreciate being able to control the level of sweetness. But the best part was that the boba was excellent! Unlike some places, it wasn't too dry so as to crack a tooth, but also not too gummy resulting from over boiling. The texture of the pearls was just right and had a nice chew and mouth feel. The next time, I'm going to opt for the fresh milk version of this drink, since it will be a bit more creamy. I'm looking forward to trying other drinks such as the Wintermelon fresh milk and the Matcha Red bean - yum! Only slight detraction is that the location is a bit weird. It's located in the basement a short distance from the Gallery Place metro. And when you walk down the stairs, the interior of this Sharetea is teeny-tiny. I can definitely imagine a scenario in the future when this place gets more popular, when there is a line snaking out the door. Other good picks for a summer drink are any of the mango teas or Okinawa milk tea. I've had people tell me they don't like the boba pearls but here's the thing--you don't have to get them! You can get just the tea. You can get the mini pearls or pudding. Be sure to get less sugar if you're sweet-averse. Always customize! My main criticism of this location is it is so tight and cramped. A line can form very quickly. The space for the register/counter is much larger than the space where you line up and get your drinks. You have to order online first and then wait to pick it up. I got the classic black milk tea with herbal jelly. I ended up with boba in my drink as well and I didn't order it. I stumbled upon Sharetea when walking around Chinatown with a friend and am happy to say that I've found another good DC area bubble tea spot! The location is somewhat tough to find (lower/basement level) on H street but it will be worth the search! I decided to go with the Hawaii Fruit tea as well as my standard strawberry black tea (both with boba add-ons). I get full sweetness because I like to add water to them while drinking and get the most bang for my buck! The boba was the perfect consistency and the Hawaii Tea had a Aiyu add in which is fruit jelly of some sort. Either way, both were delicious and were a little over $5 each after the boba additions (I got a large in both). Shout out to my coworkers for showing me this place. As you walk in, you are kind of cramped since it's a pretty small store, but once you get a taste of their tea, you realize they pack big flavor. I ordered the honey milk tea with pudding (less ice, 100% sugar) and damn it tasted sweet and refreshing. I probably should have gone with 75% sugar but I still enjoyed it. The price is fair and the workers are pretty friendly. Definitely gotta come back here to try more combinations. I enjoy Sharetea. I've tried several of their teas and they're always pretty consistent. I'm a huge fan of the ginger milk tea with pearls. I seriously crave this drink. It's made with fresh sweetened ginger so it's full of flavor and doesn't need much extra sugar added. I'm also a fan of the taro milk tea and oreo ice blended tea. The coffee milk tea is okay but doesn't have much flavor. The boba pearls are perfectly soft with just the right amount of sweeteness, not too much. This is my husband's newest favorite spot. As someone who has traveled extensively through Asia, he is somewhat of a snob when it comes to food/drink from the region. So when I suggested foregoing our usual stop at nearby La Colombe for the bubble tea shop I'd read so much about (thanks, Yelp!), he decided he'd give it a shot. With the first sip of his classic black milk tea, his eyes rolled back in ecstasy and I knew we had found a winner of a place. "Ohhhh man, this takes me right back to Taiwan," he said. Neither of us like boba in our teas (don't judge! we've tried and just can't stand them!) so we get ours without. I want to come back every week and try every flavor but I also don't want to go broke and/or gain 20 lbs from milk teas. I will say the classic teas are really top notch but I was not as much of a fan of the crema in my chocolate crema drink - tasted almost salty. Not sure if that is intended but it threw me off a big. Worth noting: *The prices are different online, in their printed menus, and on the display menu in store. I love red velvet, so I had to try their Red Fusion. It's a good drink if you're feeling like drinking your dessert! I'm not sure I would be able to identify the flavor blindfolded, but it's pretty good--it's not the most or least red velvet-y thing I've had. There's even a slight milk tea taste that's nice. This shop was quite hidden but easy to find nonetheless. There was no doubt that I had to find a bubble tea shop in the DC area and this was the only one I found immediately. I've heard of this location several times, but never got the chance to try it. I am so glad I ordered it because it tasted so good. It is hard to describe the taste, but I told my cousins it tastes like cereal and she understood. The boba was soft and chewy, which is a plus because I normally don't like boba, but this was exceptional. His tasted rather bittersweet to me, but he loved it and claimed it's one of the best he's had so far! If you love the tea aspect of boba, definitely try the Okinawa. It's roasted brown sugar! Share tea is located in the heart of Chinatown, it has a good variety of Taiwanese teas, especially bubble teas consisting of black / green / oolong tea with bubbles, which are tapioca pearls. In my opinion they are not the best I have tried, but they are not bad, they are a bit watery despite asking for it with little ice, although they are made with milk their flavor is a bit simple for my taste, as I say I have tried better teas . In this place you have the option of adding the percentage of sugar you like as well as the amount of ice you want. They have fruit teas without milk and options without caffeine. The place is nice, it has no place to sit or tables, it is just to take away. It is well decorated and they always have nice music. I recommend them if you want to try something different, but as I repeat they are not the best. read more
