    Banh Xeo Vietnamese Happy Pancake
    Joyce S.

Try the Banh Xeo Vietnamese Happy Pancake! Very hard to find one around these parts and it's made up fresh and just the way it should be with lacy crisp edges, but it's a folded over style so if you are looking for one with the filling of pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and onions cooked inside the batter like an omelette, this is not it, but it was still very good and I wish I could give it 5 stars on its own merit. However, the happy pancake will not stay happy as it doesn't travel well, so make sure you eat it there and if you are filling up, take the broccoli and some filling home but eat the delicate pancake there. The steamed broccoli was just plain steamed broccoli and they could come up with a better side with some flavor and prepped in a more Asian manner, even if just a quick stir fry. My partner chose to have the pu pu platter and was disappointed as the battered items seemed reheated rather than freshly fried as the batter was tough and items were barely warm. There were no classic chicken wings and there were two sets of fried wontons with fillings that were different, but one set was particularly skimpy. The little hibachi did not have enough fuel in it to last beyond the first few minutes, so warming anything wasn't an option. Service, Atmosphere, Suggestions: First impression was not particularly good as we weren't greeted with much enthusiasm, the fountain by the entrance wasn't working, there's little interesting to look at, lighting is like a cafeteria, and the music wasn't atmospheric. There's a little bar to the side which is reminiscent of classic Chinese restaurants, so that was good to see. We arrived for dinner but were only given paper napkins, and when we asked for the cloth napkins only one was brought and it didn't contain silverware in it. It wasn't busy, so the server could have been more helpful in offering suggestions about specials, being a little welcoming chatty etc. Our waters weren't kept filled and we weren't checked on periodically. What would really help make this place special would be really play up a classic Chinese restaurant experience, celebrating the best of retro by offering complimentary hot tea upon request and a tiny welcoming bowl of fried wonton strips and dipping sauce like restaurants like this used to do--akin to Mexican restaurants giving tortilla chips if you are ordering entrees. We're just talking pennies of investment for upping the level of experience which would add to more return visitors. When we were leaving, when I specified I did not want to take the leftovers home in styrofoam I was pleased that the server did prove to be accommodating and brought me the classic Chinese takeout container that unfolds as a plate (I wish that would be all they would use as it's biodegradable, functional, and fits the mood).Upon leaving, the check was presented and the credit card was taken, but it was not handed back so a tip could be added and when asked what about the tip, we were told it should have been added before the card was run through. Maybe the person was new-- that procedure just isn't the way things are done and since we had little cash, the server didn't receive the standard tip. Despite its rough spots, there is great potential and I hope it will live up to it in the future.

These are two of my all-time favorite dishes. Sweet and sour chicken and Cantonese chow mein!

I have been enjoying this restaurant for over 20 years. The menu is quite expansive and the delicious food served is always enough to take a little home for another meal! The price is definitely reasonable for the quality and quantity of food served. The service is always always great! I just struggle to find anything at all negative about this place! This restaurant is conveniently located... ample parking... always super clean inside with a nice selection of seating both tables and booths. No gaudy decorations just nice and simple with a designated bar area.

Move to Peoria about six years ago. We've tried a bunch of different Chinese restaurants, but finally stumbled upon Shanghai Grill. Amazing food, clean, and friendly service. I think it's the best Chinese food in the Phoenix area.

We walked into a COMPLETELY EMPTY restaurant. There was a man folding napkins and he said "sit anywhere!" Ooookay, so we sat at a booth, the RUDE waitress comes over to take our orders, "what you wanna order!?" Super aggressive! We order our usual. During that time I realized that it would be easier to eat at a round table so we could use the lazy Susan in the middle to easily reach our food. So we got up and we're going to move when the man who was folding napkins said "no! Wait for your waitress!" Waitress comes back and literally YELLED at us! Saying, "no!!! Sit at the booth!!" I tried explaining that the table would be too small and she continued to yell at me. I was on the verge of tears and didn't understand why she was so upset. Since we did not eat or drink anything, my husband said "let's go!" So we excused ourselves and left. The man folding napkins stood up and ran to the exit and started recording us. Not only was I scared, but my son started crying and my 70 year old mother began wheezing and breathing fast... they literally ran out of the restaurant as we were getting into our car and kept yelling & recording! I used to order $150-200 food EVERY MONTH!!! However we ALWAYS did pick up. Had I known how TERRIBLE THEIR SERVICE IS, I would neeeeeever have contributed to them!!! Absolutely horrible horrible hooooorible service! DO NOT GO HERE!! There are plenty other places to eat with better service!!! Huge pass and will never ever eeever return

Their food is consistently the same no matter how busy it is, most recently during a heavy dinner hour - prime time. Yes, expect to wait, we started the 30 plus wait time out side and then inside in the small waiting area. It's not fancy by any means. TVs with a game on, servers moving about, and a steady stream of to go orders. We had King Pao Chicken, Beef with broccoli and Mongolian Beef. Also Wongs fried rice & appetizer plate and soups. I had hot & sour soup, absolutely delicious, a little spicy as it should be. My Mongolian Beef was probably the best prepared, very tender beef and flavorful I've had, and always consistently the same each visit. The other entrees severed were equally flavorful, tender meats and served fresh & hot. Servers are kind and knowledgeable of each dish and offer suggestions of their favorites. The seating area is in need of updating but very clean, as are the restrooms. But it's about the quality, quantity & consistency that keeps me returning. Just go!

We ordered the yui shan chicken and the garlic chicken combos (only around $1. more to get soup, crab puff, egg roll and an upgrade from white rice to fried rice.) Based on only trying two dishes my conclusion is that they serve Arizona Style American Chinese Food. It is far less complex, less flavorful, and much less spicy than east coast American take out Chinese Food. It's not bad food in anyway so if you are from Arizona it is very good food. We started eating at the restaurant but I got the idea that I could take the food home and improve it for my taste. The food stayed piping hot and it did taste much better with just a spoonful of chili crisp added more flavors and some needed heat. The people working there seemed very nice and the restaurant looked sparkling clean. 3 stars is a positive review and means A-OK on Yelp. For whatever reason, Chinese restaurants in Arizona serve egg hockey pucks and cover it with various items and call it egg foo young. I even asked about it before I ordered it. Alas when I got home and saw what I had, I was disappointed. It's faster to make it this way but the egg hockey puck had no taste - zero. They could have at least added oyster sauce, a little soy sauce, maybe nam plah, and perhaps sesame oil. It was tasteless. A complete miss. I also ordered something simple, shrimp spring rolls. They were delicious! I inhaled them and will order them again. I'd go again just for the spring rolls. Maybe they have other dishes that are good and I may not entirely give up but the egg foo young is a no go.
