Try the Banh Xeo Vietnamese Happy Pancake! Very hard to find one around these parts and it's made up fresh and just the way it should be with lacy crisp edges, but it's a folded over style so if you are looking for one with the filling of pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and onions cooked inside the batter like an omelette, this is not it, but it was still very good and I wish I could give it 5 stars on its own merit. However, the happy pancake will not stay happy as it doesn't travel well, so make sure you eat it there and if you are filling up, take the broccoli and some filling home but eat the delicate pancake there. The steamed broccoli was just plain steamed broccoli and they could come up with a better side with some flavor and prepped in a more Asian manner, even if just a quick stir fry. My partner chose to have the pu pu platter and was disappointed as the battered items seemed reheated rather than freshly fried as the batter was tough and items were​ barely warm. ​There were no classic chicken wings and there were two sets of fried wontons with fillings that were different, but one set was particularly skimpy. The little hibachi did not have enough fuel in it to last beyond the first few minutes, so warming anything wasn't an option. Service, Atmosphere, Suggestions: First impression was not particularly good as ​we weren't greeted with much enthusiasm, the fountain by the entrance wasn't working, there's ​little interesting to look at, lighting is like a cafeteria, and the music wasn't atmospheric. There's a little bar to the side which is reminiscent of classic Chinese restaurants, so that was good to see. We arrived for dinner but were only given paper napkins, and when we asked for the cloth napkins only one was brought and it didn't contain silverware in it. It wasn't busy, so the server could have been more helpful in offering suggestions about specials, being a little welcoming chatty etc. Our waters weren't kept filled and we weren't checked on periodically. What would really help make this place special would be really play up a classic Chinese restaurant experience, celebrating the best of retro by offering complimentary hot tea upon request and a tiny welcoming bowl of fried wonton strips and dipping sauce like restaurants like this used to do--akin to Mexican restaurants giving tortilla chips if you are ordering entrees. We're just talking pennies of investment for upping the level of experience which would add to more return visitors. When we were leaving, ​when I specified I did not want to take the lefto​vers home in styrofoam I was pleased that the server did prove to be accommodating and brought me the classic Chinese takeout container that unfold​s as a plate​ (I wish that would be all they would use as it's biodegradable, functional, and fits the mood​).Upon leaving, the check was presented and the credit card was taken, ​but it was not handed back so a tip could be added and when asked what about the tip, we were told it should have been added before the card was run through. Maybe the person was new-- that procedure just isn't the way things are done and since we had little cash, the server didn't receive the standard tip.​ Despite its rough spots, there is great potential and I hope it will live up to it in the future. read more

Excellent Chinese Cuisine in Peoria/Sun City. Chocolate Martini, Unsweetened tea, a Kirin beer and Lemon water to whet the palate. Great Potstickers to start. Then entrees of Shrimp Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Garlic Chicken and Twice Cooked Pork fill the bill. I can be fairly picky about Chinese food. (I know, it's Americanized.) We did takeout from Shanghai, but I think next time we'll dine in. The restaurant was beautiful with plenty of parking. And we were welcomed immediately upon arriving. We each a combo. I had the walnut shrimp, which was very good. Hubby had the pepper steak which he really enjoyed. Combos included egg rolls, fried wontons and fried rice. And we also ordered the calamari and crab puffs. Everything was delicious and still hot by the time we got home. Shanghai is now in my top two for Chinese food in the valley. And we will definitely be back again. read more

First, a shoutout to Door Dash for a blazing fast delivery! Next, the sad news. My coconut shrimp was flattened to wafer-thin. Perhaps to make a tiny shrimp look bigger? To add insult to injury, it was way overcooked (over fried? You decide.) Instead of being golden brown and crispy, it was mahogany-colored and leathery. The veggies in hubby's Mongolian beef were so wilted and old he could not eat them. My sweet and sour pork was not bad, but I hope this was not the Chef's best effort. This is another joint that just dumps a bunch of proteins on the top of the Egg Foo Young patty instead of putting all the meats/proteins inside the patty and cooked... BTW the Egg Foo Young did not taste fresh and for a $20 dish, I would expect better. The fried rice was average and needed more cooking (supposed to be "Fried Rice"). The potstickers were flavorless. The Fried stuff was average. Orange chicken was decent. First time trying this join so we spent $130 for our meal (including $10 tip for the driver) to get a good sampling and was not impressed. We called first to see how busy they were and were told our party of 2 could be seated right away. 6:30 pm was the perfect time to go as it was clearing out. Anyway, the soup was very good. Egg Drop soup is too bland for me, but the other half loved hers. The Hot & Sour was just right and had robust flavor. My Pork Fun Chow was good, but not as good as the Pork Fun Chow I last had at Wo Hop in NYC's Chinatown. Here, the noodles were a little overcooked. The Almond Chicken was great. After not going to Shanghai for several years ( bad experience). We heard it had changed owners and decided to try it again. We have been going most Monday evenings I have something different each time. I love onions but They don't love me , so I ask them to exchange them for another vegetable. One dish doesn't come with vegetables but I asked if they could add some carrots broccoli and mushrooms.No problem. Everything is as fresh as can be. We order takeout with not a lot of expectations and even those weren't nearly met. We were absolutely starving as we had not eaten yet and typically any food tastes pretty decent when you're that hungry but not this food. The hot and sour soup was absolutely horrendous. It tasted like it was made with ketchup. We ordered $120 worth of food and myself and my Asian wife cannot come up with one thing that we liked even remotely. I like to order lots of extra Chinese food so then I can have a couple extra meals of leftovers. These leftovers hit the trash. Walked in and asked if we wanted a booth or table, said a booth would be great. Then 2 gentlemen argued over something we could.not understand. We were finally sat, given menus and left for more than 10 mins. No water, no order, nothing. No one ever came back to the table. We also watched as the people who came in behind us were given water and had their order taken. After another 5 mins we got up and left and no one even said a word. When we walked in we saw there was a large party so we got a little nervous, like maybe they would be slow. Wrong! We were seated quickly and our server came right away. The staff was very friendly and attentive but not overly so. The food was excellent. We started with hot and sour soup, excellent. I had my favorite, salt and pepper prawns. So gentle readers, I would be remiss for not more than mentioning "The Shanghai Grill" on W Union Hills Road and N 91ST Ave in Peoria. We first tried this restaurant several times multiple years ago and it was alright. While alright is a relative term, it is not necessarily a glowing recommendation. Through the advice of other NEXTDOOR writers, I was advised to give the new owners a try. Our first re-visit was a little over a year ago, and per my most recent bank statement, it appears we are now sending the new owners children to an Ivy League college of their choice! (Yes, the food is that good!) This is the point where I recommend my weak bladdered readers and those whose drink is now mostly ice, to empty and refill said mentioned items. If you have read any of my previous food reviews, you will know I recommend not reading any reviews rated a "1" as most of them seem to have an axe to grind; not all but 95%, as stated by their own other reviews. Remember, you can select their name and read their other reviews. Most never spoke to their server, or the restaurant manager. One should ALWAYS give the restaurant an opportunity to make things right. Also remember, your right may not always be the fair right! As for the "5" reviews, again throw out 25% of those reviews, mine included because we never had the opportunity to write as we had hoped over the years! Now onto an honest review of the "new" Shanghai Grill Restaurant. First off, we have found their menu is merely amazing and only a recommendation. They can and will do almost anything to their ingredients, spices and heat levels. If you see an item in the "pork" section and not in the chicken section... guess what? They will do it! This is the exact conversation with our server: "Is your Chicken Lo Mein saucy or dry?" His response was "Tell me how you like it!" Seriously, in this age of "non-customer service" and "take it or leave It", someone asked me my opinion; THEN delivered on it? WHAT is happening here? Over the past year of "reconsidering" Shanghai Grill we have come to truly love this place. Their Hot and Sour soup is pungent, but not vinegary (a word I thought I just made up, but nope, it is a real word). The vegetables are fresh and on point. We have tried so many of their entrees, it is hard to choose a favorite. The six fried shrimp appetizer is delicious, (although some have criticized them for being flat). The cocktail sauce comes with a flavorful kick! I must mention the Six Crab Puffs, while crab or anything from the sea is not a favorite of mine, the creamy texture with a hint of crab drudged through a delicious maybe duck-Ish sauce left me wanting more. Next onto our favorite entrees! Feeling like taking the tastebuds out for a spin? Try the Vietnamese Sun Devil Chicken and get it SPICY! You will hate yourself the next day, but it sure is delicious and flavorful on day one! Are you one for full flavor and no spice? Try the Thai Curry Chicken and leave the pineapple in! It sounds weird but adds another level of flavor one can only experience at Shanghai Grill. Do your tastebuds want something beefy and fulfilling? (But also, afraid that any beef dish might be chewy?) Fear not, try the Mongolian Beef and you can never go wrong by adding snow peas for the added crunch! Finally, we could never decide between chicken fried rice add extra onions and snow peas, or the Chicken Lo Mein and running it through the same garden. Well, the server advised us to try the Pork, Beef and Chicken Lo Mein with extra onions and snow pea pods. Let's just say that servers children have since been added to the college fund! So, keep in mind gentle readers, everyone has an opinion, but YOUR opinion is the most important to your gastro needs. You can only take other peoples opinions and see if they add to your dining out experience or if those blue formed together cans of "La Choy" in your bottom cupboard outrank another's' opinions. Yes, I paid for my meal; no, I am not a family member, and yes there might be a small upcharge for adding snow pea pods! The Shanghai Grill will continue to grace our favorite Chinese dining experience. Happy dining! read more
