I swear to God, this is such an odd place! The dichotomy between old and young still perplexes me. The majority of the clientele is elderly....think 80+. The majority of the employees (the servers, at least) are 25 and under. Plus, this place gives off Greek restaurant vibes, like the kind where you can get a gyro, spaghetti, or chow mein all in the same place: jack of all, master of none. You think it's all going to be tasteless food, but you would be oh so wrong. Mom and dad (80+, but with it) ordered liver and onions, I got an open faced turkey sandwich, and hubs got country fried sirloin. Everyone agreed that their food was delicious. I can't speak to the others, but for me, the turkey was moist, not dry, and the gravy (which they drenched over my turkey without asking, thank you very much) had really good seasoning to it...not overly peppery like at most places. The mashed potatoes were soft, not chunky, my side of corn was very buttery and NOT served in a bowl of corn water, and my cranberries were from a can (THE BEST KIND, and yes I WILL FIGHT YOU on this). We all ordered pie for dessert and I should have went with everyone else and gotten Key Lime, but I chose cherry. It wasn't the greatest of flavor as, even though there were real cherries in it, it was predominantly cherry flavored goo. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised, and I would come here again. Mercer's is the food jack of all trades. From Tuna melts to eggs Benedict and everything in between, Mercer's has it on their extensive menu. I just wish the soups were a little less greasy and the place in general a bit more clean looking. read more

Our First time at Merced's restaurant. We took Mom for her 89th birthday. Absolutely blown away by the portions and service. Flor R was our waitress and she was the best. So attentive and helpful. Super friendly and treated all of us like old friends. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an older diner or cafe experience. Very much like restaurants that we grew up with. Brookshires on 15th and Mc Dowel comes to mind,( which is now a Mexican restaurant but a great memory. Also similar to My Mother's type of food and Ambiance. All of the staff were super friendly and we wanted for nothing. Mom ordered the Half Rack of ribs and comes with 3 sides. Paul ordered All You can Eat Pancakes and they start you out with 5 big pancakes. I ordered the All you can Eat Shrimp and Fish with Chips, also came with 3 sides. We were looking for a good cafe/diner place where we came to do some business and Mercer's popped up. I love the greasy spoon restaurants and this place was perfect. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The menu has everything to include Monte Cristo, which I got. It was amazing. Everything was prepared well and tasted great. The outside of the building is nothing to write home about, but once inside the diner vibe was popping. Lots of seating able to accommodate groups large and small. We will definitely come back when in the area! As another reviewer mentioned, my wife made the exact same comment- that most patrons were elderly (we were the youngest in the joint at 52) and the staff were all young. lol. I have been here a few times. The outside of this place has seen better days. It's been here quite a while and the majority of the businesses in the strip mall appear to be gone. The parking lot looks like a third world country. Don't worry, my review gets better from here... This place shows its age, but it is a wonderful place with a lot of different menu items. They serve breakfast all day, which is also great. Everything I've had has been delicious. The prices are pretty decent and you can have a good meal for about the same price as going to a fast food place. I've been here for breakfast, their fish fry and today I had a patty melt. A senior citizen hot spot with fair prices, good service, plenty of parking, different old tyme specials, and a varied diner menu. Don't let all us gray hairs scare you away. There is something for all ages here. Good burgers, liver and onions, beef stroganoff, Rueben sandwich, spaghetti and meatballs and all the morning staples. I particularly like the Chili con carne omelet. The chili is just right for breakfast and blends well with the omelet. Not sure if they still do them, but for anyone that likes buckwheat pancakes this one if the few places that does them. They don't rush you out, just relax and enjoy your meal. This restaurant has been around since I moved into the area in 1988. That should tell you something right there. It's always busy. The inside is a little dated, probably not remodeled in 39 years, but it's clean, bright, and comfortable. The food is excellent with a fairly large menu to choose from. I tend to lean towards the Rueben Sandwich when I'm there, but I've also been there for the Tuesday and Friday all-you-can-eat fish and shrimp fry. (Tuesday is free ice cream day, a double whammy!). Ok, so this is a mixed bag. I think to really appreciate Mercer's you have to go in understanding what the place and food is all about. In my opinion this place pays homage to good old fashioned diner food. The food is not elevated, in fact the food that I got looked like it came out of a can, jar, etc. I got the Turkey open faced sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy and cranberry sauce. When I got it I had to smile because it was just like the plate I would get as a kid at the local diner. The cranberry sauce was literally cut and still had the can impression on the surface. The mashed potatoes tasted like the potato flakes reconstituted my mom would make, and that brown gravy was thick and had that out of the jar taste. No you all have to understand, these are not complaints. I really enjoyed every bite. And this food is obviously enjoyed by the Sun City community. People just kept coming in. The place is clean, the staff are friendly, the service is great. We took pie slices home for dessert, because we were stuffed. Let me just say, stay away from the pies. They were really bad. But that won't stop me from going back when I a good old fashioned meal made just like I had at that old diner of my youth. read more

I guess I'm a little old school and do like a nice cafe. I like home cooking and southern fare like chicken fried steak or liver and onions. So, I Yelped restarants looking for new places to try. Among others, I found Mercer's. It's located at the end of an old strip mall in Peoria. Upon entering, I noticed a Hero's wall which I thought was very nice. The place was busy, so it took about 10 minutes to be seated. I did enjoy browsing the photos while I waited. The place is simply decorated and is reminiscent of the 60's and 70's. It was abuzz with what appears to be career severs, which is usually a good sign. While the menu is comprehensive, I came here specifically to find good liver and onions. My wife decided on a Taco Salad. The liver and onions were good and came with three sides! I got a loaded baked potato, coleslaw and corn. I did ask for brown gravy to go with my liver and onions, but didn't care for it much. It and the corn tasted like they came out of a can. Just okay, not great. Otherwise everything else was fine and my wife did enjoy her salad. Mercer's is an honest to goodness old school diner with all that you would expect to find for any craving. Our family of 6 is in town from Tucson for a hockey tournament and went to Mercer's for the first time. Service was excellent. Seated right away and food came out quickly. Went in for brunch and was seated immediately. The restaurant is open, roomy, and has a fast-paced mom-and-pop diner vibe. They have daily specials and a big menu with plenty to choose from. Drinks are constantly refilled--whether coffee (a bit watery and not the best) or water, they keep it coming. We ordered the pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. The pancakes were thick, fluffy, and literally the size of the plate! Bacon was thick-cut and perfectly cooked. Eggs were standard--nothing special, but not bad either. We also had the taco omelet with hash browns. The omelet was packed with tasty ingredients, fluffy, and very filling. Hash browns were okay, but I personally prefer a crispier top and edges. Overall, the food was good, the portions are huge, and the prices are great for what you get. The staff is kind, quick, and attentive. I was looking for a local restaurant to meet a friend and Mercer's was the place. When entering the host immediately greet us. A waitress was right there to seat us and was very polite while walking us to our table. The restaurant was clean and quite a few people having lunch. There are lunch specials to choose from. The menu has a lot to choose from. French fry's were good crispy and fresh! The BLT was good and they were giving a way ice cream. I had rocky road it was nice and creamy I had thought they made it there at the restaurant. The waitress told that the ice cream was not made there, but that it was Shamrocks ice cream. Update 5/2025 I'd go more often but I'd rather have smaller portions for less money, but when I'm hungry enough and am able to deal with toting leftovers home, this is a fun old fashioned place to eat. I like that they have some other beers than just Bud available in pitchers: we went with the hazy Church Music which went well with my meatloaf and fresh zucchini, and the sweet potato fries and onion rings(up-charges, but tasty). My partner's 1/2 rotisserie chicken was succulent and he was pleased with perfectly steamed broccoli, but the mashed potatoes didn't taste homemade and that is one thing you should count on in this type of place, so hopefully they can change that for the better. They make homemade pies and cakes here and I opted for the key lime pie and it reminded me of the ones with condensed milk and I wished it could be more mouth puckering, but am sure it would be fine for others. The server was attentive but not intrusive and all the other customers seemed to be having a pleasant time as well. The restaurant was quite busy. We were sat right away the vegetable soup was rich and hearty and served hot. Yum! The turkey melt was good the fries had good flavor but they were soggy. The country fried steak breakfast was huge. The gravy tasted like flour and bit underwhelming. The salad had a lot of meat. It was interesting to have a pickle spear and sliced pickles.
