    Tuna seared

Barley and Smoke made for a nice evening out last Friday. My husband and I came in on a whim, hoping to just walk in since we didn't make reservations. We arrived close to 5pm and they were able to seat us. At first, it wasn't so busy but then an hour in, the place was getting super packed. The cocktails were creative and balanced. It was fun ordering different ones and seeing how they would turn out. The old fashioned with banana and walnut? notes was really good and I also enjoyed the pineapple bourbon smash. The small plate/appetizers could have been filling enough, but I'm glad we ordered several small plates and still got regular entrees as well. The bone marrow, the peach burrata, and the ribs were all so good! My husband liked his Waygu burger a lot and I had the seared tuna over corn. Our bartender/server was super nice and made nice suggestions. The bar had a sophisticated feel to it. We were super comfortable sitting at the bar, and it was more interesting that way because you could watch them make drinks and also cook. It's so wonderful having this speakeasy on this side of town. I hate always having to drive to Scottsdale and Tempe for all the new restaurants and bars. We deserve the fun too! We will definitely come back and we highly recommend Barley and Smoke. Next time, we will most likely make reservations just so we have a little more assurance that we are getting a seat instead of playing it last minute by ear, haha!

Love love love this hidden gem! My husband and I just moved to the area and we're looking for a fun date night. He found Barley & Smoke and made the reservation for later that night. They had seating availability at the bar too every 15 minutes so it was quite easy to get a seat. Located inside Peoria Artisan Brewery, you will check in with the hostess upon arrival. She walked us through the kitchen to find the speakeasy. So vinyl and very unexpected after being walked through the kitchen. The drinks were fun and creative and the menu had a nice variety to it. We started off with 1/2 dozen oysters and cocktails. I ordered the English garden and I think my husband ordered a sidecar. The English garden was delicious! I especially loved the coconut cream. For dinner we ordered the tomahawk dinner meant to share. This came with a Caesar salad, roasted rosemary potatoes, the carved tomahawk, and a dessert. I wish I could remember the price but I do remember thinking it was a great amount of food. I would have liked the steak to have been a bit more tender and flavorful but everything else was tasty. We upgraded our dessert to the peach cobbler, which did not disappoint, and finished the night with an espresso martini - which was more milk-based than espresso. All in all, I would definitely go back again and try a few more things on the menu.

After a few visits now I can confirm that I'm a fan of Barley & Smoke. I was after my first visit but I'm trying to be patient before I lavish praise so readily. The speakeasy-style spot is a winner. Ensconced within Peoria Artisan Brewery the space is accessed via a short walk through the kitchen, where the staff will welcome you on your way. You enter into a nice cozy spot with ample bar seating around an open kitchen area with nice table seating to accommodate various-sized groups. I won't go into exhaustive detail on the menu, you can check the website but, while a bit small, it is nicely varied and eclectic in a way. The Tallow and Bread is a definite winner, as is the Pork Belly Fried Rice - which is a meal in itself. We also sampled the Asparagus, which was delicious. We also tried the B&S Burger on our previous visit which was quite tasty. Dishes are nicely presented and appealing. The cocktail and wine menu is impressive. The El Hefe Grande is wonderful, consisting of Manchado Bacanora, Cointreau, Limoncello, Charred Lemon Juice, Agave Syrup, and Black Lava Salt Blend. There is a very nice selection of wine and a really good list of Whiskey, Bourbons and Scotch. You're sure to find something to enjoy. Service is really above average in my opinion. Very knowledgeable about the menu, current drink special and any recommendations you might need. On both of our visits Rain was outstanding. Friendly, happy that you are there and extremely helpful with the menu or any questions. A great asset to the place. Barley & Smoke needs to be on your list of places to try. It is spacious enough yet intimate. A perfect date-night spot or for a small group of friends.

This place is so cool. Speakeasy feel since you walk through the kitchen which was fun. We had already eaten but really enjoyed watching the kitchen prep the food. Definitely will be back for dinner. Did have a Caprese Martini which was like drinking a margarita pizza!! So good. Fun place for the Westside. Definitely higher end.

Last night I treated my wife to an early Mother's Day dinner at the new Barley & Smoke speakeasy she had been eager to try. Upon walking through the kitchen of the Peoria Artisan Brewery restaurant, we were met with a fantastic and beautiful bar and the pleasant scent of hardwood smoke hanging in the air, illuminated by the glow of the Edison lights and reflected by tarnished bar mirrors in gilded frames. We were seated at a table with a comfortable and elegant tufted back booth and an executive chair on the opposing side. Our server, Bradford, kindly introduced himself and welcomed us to the restaurant. Bradford was funny and friendly and made several recommendations when talking about the specials (One of which, the oysters, I took him up on). If we ever had a question about anything, he had the answer. After ordering and before receiving our food, I admired the impressive artisan bar where the liquor was stored; As well as the gorgeous glassware and flatware, the classic design of the menus, the cleanliness and industriousness of the other staff and kitchen, and the how clean and well-kept the restroom facilities were. We enjoyed our first round of craft cocktails, amidst the pleasantness of whatever 80s synth wave music was playing in the background. My wife had the very delicious and refreshing La Mariposa, while I had the incredible Smokin' Aces (a must have for fans of old fashions or smoked bourbon drinks). Our Appetizers came quickly and were consumed even quicker. The oysters were delicious with hot sauce and the bone marrow with toast on a bed of fresh arugula and radish shavings was so fantastic it may warrant a return trip for it alone. With our second round of drinks, (a glass of old Forester 1920 for myself and, the drink special of the evening, an orange blossom spritzer for my wife) we enjoyed the Caesar salad that came with our family style tomahawk steak special. The salad was topped with fresh white anchovies that tasted nothing like the salt-bombs that are often associated with the commonly disliked pizza topping. These anchovies tasted much more like an artisan white fish that you might receive on a bakery fresh bagel. Finally, the tomahawk arrived, cooked to a medium rare perfection with fresh rosemary and potatoes. I am not being facetious when I state that this was, bar none, the greatest steak I have ever had the pleasure of eating. And as someone who used to eat steaks on a near nightly basis when bulking for competitive lifting, I must say this steak was marbled to perfection with fat that melted in your mouth like warm butter. I had to pay my respects to the chef. Last on the docket was dessert. We had beignets with both salted caramel syrup and, my favorite, the blueberry mezcal syrup, which added a rich smoky tarty taste to the confectioners sugar covered beignets. This paired nicely with the final drink of the evening, a glass of EH Taylor small batch. All in all this was the best dining experience we have had in months and it became an immediate recommendation to several friends and coworkers. Barely & Smoke is an excellent choice for a special night out if you're in the mood for a delicious steak, craft cocktails, and you don't mind the price tag.

What a sexy little spot in the Northwest Valley of Phoenix to have an intimate dinner or dessert with drinks. Barley & Smoke @barleyandsmoke is a sleek and polished yet cozy speakeasy located at 10144 W Lake Pleasant Pkwy #1130, Peoria, Arizona, inside @peoriaartisanbrewing Be sure to make reservations ahead of arriving. You can reserve bar seating or dining room seating. We chose dining room and had a booth near the kitchen. We reserved easily, same day, through the link on their Instagram profile page. We ordered: - ENGLISH GARDEN COCKTAIL - House Vanilla Infused Platinum 7 Vodka | Honey Simple | Egg Whites I Coconut Cream | Edible Rose Petal Garnish - Excellent Cocktail!! - TALLOW & BREAD - Animal Fat Candle | Dutch Oven Bread | Fleur de Sel - CHARRED VEGETABLES - Hearth Roasted | Falafel Hummus | Za'atar Tzatziki | Flat Bread - COWBOY RIBEYE FOR TWO - 20 oz. | Smoked Demi | Horseradish Potatoes (Includes Salad & Dessert) - HOUSE SALAD - CAESAR SALAD WITH ANCHOVIES - BEIGNETS WITH STRAWBERRY COULIS & CARAMEL We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves tonight. Our waiter was so charming and helpful, despite being on his toes all evening, taking care of all the tables. It was a little smoky and warm as we walked in. We sort of felt like we were tucked in a back room in an actual speakeasy, albeit one with lots of class. The Tallow & Bread appetizer is so fun. The bread is really delicious and it's fun dipping it in the melting candle and fleur de sel while deciding what to order. There is a men's and women's restroom inside the speakeasy. After our 2 1/2 hour meal, we exited through two doors disguised as bookcases that let us straight from the speakeasy back to the parking lot. What a fun Thursday night!

First visit to Barley and Smoke speakeasy in west Peoria. We ordered the Pork Belly appetizer and the Tallow & Bread. The Pork Belly was awesome and it is a must order. One of the best I have had in Arizona Bread had a unique touch with a melting tallow candle but it is nothing super special. We ordered the chef catch sea bass and Santa Maria ribeye for our main dishes. The ambiance is really cool and our server Rain was awesome and very knowledgeable. The sea bass was a large portion and was tasty. The ribeye was good but not great. Ordered medium rare and it was closer to medium. It also had a pico on top and it was a total miss. It does not pair well with the steak. The rosemary potatoes that came with the ribeye were a mixed bag. Some were burnt and others were just right. Have to pay attention when cooking the whole batch. I am not sure if I want to give them another chance. Update, the owner (Matt) came by before we left the restaurant and addressed any concern we might have had. For that reason alone I bumped the review up a full star! "FIMP" Food is my Passion David B

Great cocktails! Loved this speakeasy atmosphere. The drinks are very creative and delicious. The food is very tasty and high quality it's more of a private speakeasy setting. Make sure to reserve in advance because this place will get booked.

Top notch speakeasy experience in Sun City! Barley and Smoke is one of the coolest speakeasies I have been to. You walk into the sports bar and let the hostess know that you have reservations for Barley & Smoke. She guides you through a passage which I won't spoil for you. Magically through a door, a fine dining world opens to you. Complete with a wood fire oven, magical creations are brought to your table. Try the Old Fashion smoked at your table. It is one of the smoothest most aromatic thing you will drink. I had the Tequila with Butterfly pea ice ball cocktail. It was so pretty! The charcuterie board had these yummy pickled leek stalks things. The beat blue cheese I have had...crumbly and rich in flavor. The anduja spread is tangy and spicy: andouille sausage and Spanish chorizo. Then came the melt in your mouth ribeye, wild mushrooms and mash. I loved my Bao Bunn stuffed with the amazing pork belly, red chilies and radish: The sauce!!!! I was transported back to my childhood when my grandmother made Bao Buns stuffed with soy braised fatty pork. Finally, the Mexican chocolate brûlée. I felt like I was in elementary school eating chocolate pudding but with a grownup twist. The torched crust on top was crispy. I loved the sugared mint leaves/ Thank you to our lovely wait staff: Meghan and Brad! Applause to Chef Marco and his team for a fabulous night! I want all my friends to enjoy this space with me again and again.

Always a fun date night at Barley and Smoke! The Banana Nut Old Fashioned is delightfully sweet and strong. My husband was quite delighted with this rendition of his favorite drink! I had a Pinot Noir that was spectacular, and I'm always blown away by the wonderful wine selection offered!

But a friend wanted to meet for food around the area and this spit popped up on Yelp. It didn't disappoint! I was skeptical at first as having a sign posted at the sidewalk and a bouncer outside the stairs going down, was a sheer sign that this isn't such a secret and speakeasy-like spot. But I was proven wrong very quickly. Dre who was the bouncer and I'd much rather call Drayden, is young but friendly. The hall leading down to the entrance was well decorated. It's hard to miss the door when you can hear people on the other side :). Hostess was nice. Alex immediately introduced himself from behind the bar as I sat down, and Meagan was the main bartender this night. They were both a wealth of knowledge when it came to cocktails. I really wasn't expecting too much but the two drinks I ordered were a solid 5/5. I had the silk bandit and the untold legacy. I like sweet drinks this way. It wasn't too sweet. All the flavors were well balanced and well thought out. They also had a girl singing tonight and she was amazing!!! Thanks for a nice relaxing night. This time was checking…read moreout a speakeasy located in the heart of downtown Gilbert on a Friday evening at 9 p.m. I parked for free on the street before making my way to The White Rabbit. There are some things I really love about The White Rabbit and some that I didn't. Ambiance (3/5): When I think of a speakeasy, I think intimate. The White Rabbit is not that. It's pretty large for a speakeasy with a large bar and a good number of tables/booths. They weren't at capacity while I was there, but there were a good number of people there. Which made it pretty loud. To the point where you have to yell at your bartender when ordering your drink so they can hear you. Perhaps a much different experience on a week day. Getting in the speakeasy was both a hit and a miss. If you're subscribed to their email list, as I am, you get a different password every month. I was excited about this. Upon approaching The White Rabbit, I saw a sign naming the establishment and pointing me in the right direction. This takes away from the spirit of speakeasies which are supposed to be truly hidden without any signage identifying the restaurant. You'll see a velvet rope blocking a stairwell where you tell one of the bouncers the password. I had a reservation. If you don't know the password, as another party there didn't, they ask you to access a QR code to find out or ask others who are waiting. I appreciated the dedication to the cause. Once you get in, you walk down the stairwell, and then enter a cool hallway decked out with Prohibition-style decor. That leads you into the main room. The main room is also Prohibition-style though a bit unremarkable. The bathrooms are clean and also feature some cool paintings (and they also hide that they are actual bathrooms). With that being said, when I liked the hallway and the bathrooms better than the bar itself, that's a bit of an issue. Seats at the bar are bar stools without back support. Never fun for my old man back. I did, on the other hand, appreciate that they have free WiFi. Service (3.5/5): The service was generally pretty good, though a bit slow. They start you off with some water without asking you which is always a nice touch. It was just one of those situations where you have to put some effort into getting a bartender's attention on several occasions. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so no food for me. I did check out the menu. They have a small selection of appetizers, flatbreads, and desserts. Drinks (3/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I'm looking for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients and flavors. While The White Rabbit has a good number of cocktails, many of them didn't attract me. Part of it is a matter of personal preference. There were only two drinks out of about 20 that I was interested in. Overall, I wanted a little more, but with that being said, the drinks were reasonably priced for a speakeasy. Not a bad speakeasy by any means, I have super high standards when it comes to these watering holes. Just not in my top five when it comes to speakeasies in Phoenix and surrounding areas.
