This bar illegally tried to steal my credit card. I opened a tab upstairs and went downstairs to the bathroom the security staff told me that the upstairs area was at full capacity and would not let me close out my tab. I waited to go back upstairs for 45 min. I asked to speak with a manager and they told me to f# off. I threatened to call the police and they finally allowed me to close out my tab. Very unprofessional rude staff. This situation was totally avoidable, go to Maggie Mae across the street. read more

I really love this place! I love the $5 dollar pitchers , just stick a straw in there and i'm good :) The first walk in is your typical pub, and then to the left is another room more "club like" , walk out make a left, and there is an outdoor bar with a more laid back feel with a stage, go up the stairs and you're in the patio , they play great music and there is a bar up there too....I love this place, If i get bored with one room, i migrate to the other :D read more

This is without a doubt one of if not the best local bar on Old Pecan Street (6thStreet) This bar has been serving the best Austin has to offer for over 15 years, and that my friends is staying power in a industry where the average bar changes hands or name about every 4 years. I have been around Austin 20 years and can name on one hand how many bars have been around over 10 years downtown. Shakespears will be around another 20 years because they know exactly how to to cater to the locals and the tourists... Great bartenders and servers. read more

This place sucks. SUCKS. We went in last night to see if anything was happening, and ended up on the top floor. The music wasn't too bad. However... we ordered drinks which were reasonably priced, but tasted like toilet water! When we asked the bartender downstairs to check this out and maybe get a replacement, he said that it smelled fine and just put more sprite in it. So great, not only am I drinking toilet water, but not my drink is even more diluted. Thanks. Don't let me forget the best part: when we saw the biggest cockroach I've ever seen on the wall right next to my friend's head. This place is great! They have two entrances, and a total of 3 different areas playing music. The front, the back, and upstairs. Upstairs is where its al! Good people, good music, and good fun! I came here to kill twenty minutes--and get away from the reverberating Harley Davidsons--before seeing Master Pancake Theater (Goldfinger) at Alamo Ritz. Despite low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. First, my Jim Beam and water was a heavy pour. The price wasn't cheap ($6 bucks), but it looked like it cold have been a double. So ... I was thrilled. I ventured to the back patio area, to find a tranquil monastery-like area. (Okay, monastery is a little strong, but it was tranquil.) There were misters and fans, and I had the patio mostly to myself. I liked the easy access to the patio bar. I'm not sure I would want to fight a crowd here, but for an early 7ish drink before an Alamo Ritz film, this has been my favorite nearby bar so far. read more

Shakespear's is the quintessential dirty 6th dive. Plastic cups, canned drinks, dirty as hell but good place to get a drink.

I have no idea why this is a popular bar. The front entrance is tight and jammed but if you walk towards the back, it's a really huge bar. The lower floor back room has a dark, steamy dirty room that plays rap. The back outdoor patio plays live music and the upstairs patio just has stereos and people chilling. The crowd is emo and hipsters and drink specials are like $3 wells and $5 pitcher of wells. If my friends didn't work here, I'd never go. read more

While 6th St is basically a suicide mission, Shakespeare's Pub is actually pretty fun! I think it's three floors and wide spreadness, and outdoor parts make it bearable so there's not so many weird people in one place. They've got some great specials like $10 pitchers of well drinks on Sat..this may be on Thurs as well, or something similar. The music is the rap/ top 40 crap that I like. Thomas (usually on top floor on the right when you go up the stairs) is the coolest. read more

While I do not drink pitchers of whiskey, there are many people who would appreciate knowing this place has them-for cheap. Overall it is one of my preferred bars on 6th street, but then again I view them all as kind of the same. I do like the roof top area, it is nice to go up there and hang out over the balcony. They do not have live music, which can be viewed as a plus or minus depending on your nature. read more

This bar was fine until they kicked us off our rooftop patio table at 10:30 for no apparent reason. We were the only paying customers at 9:30 but suddenly our table and money is no good at 10:30. The beer was warm and the service is clearly not customer based. Won't be coming back. read more

Shakespeare's is what you should expect when you hit Dirty 6th. Don't expect high quality drinks or a super clean atmosphere. The staff is pretty friendly, but you have to be aware that you're getting into a crap show once it gets later in the night. It's a pretty spacious place and there are places you can escape to when you feel like it's getting overcrowded. Overall, it's not an entirely unique experience, but it's a solid one. read more

Love this little dive in Austin. It was $5 Long Island ice tea pitcher night so that's all I needed to know. It was perfectly made! At first the bar looks small but head to the back and it opens up to a courtyard and an outside second floor that sits on top of the bar. Fun relaxing place to enjoy the weirdness that is Austin! Shakepears, Shakespears, Shakespears...Thursday nights are my favorite! Anywhere that will give you a pitcher and fill half of it with whatever alcohol than the other half with a mixture and only have to pay $5 for it, you win my heart! Its a very long and narrow club with a 2nd stories that is outside (great for the smokers!). Most of the times that I have gone, I ended up shoulder to shoulder on frat looking guys an blondies. Which is not always a bad thing but man on man it does get crowded. I am not a weekend clubber and choose to go during the week but when I have gone its always been fun. Bartenders great to have a quick conversation with and willing to joke! Every time I've gone they have been playing a great mix of 90s and top hits! Come on..90s! YES PLEASE!!!! read more

Very very very fratty. There were literally guys pulling off their cowboy boots, filling them with beer, and yelling at each other to drink out of them. If thats your scene, sweet. But for us, the line was long for a suboptimal experience. You can definitely do better in Austin. read more

Shakespeare's Pub wasn't a total waste of time, which is a lot more than I can day about most bars on 6th Street. The highlight of Shakespeare's was definitely the rooftop-level bar and dance floor. The lighting was dim, the music wasn't blaring, and the space looked almost charming before becoming packed with people around midnight. Overall, Shakespeare's Pub had some character and sophistication missing in many 6th street bars and might make a good place to start a night of bar hopping. read more

Good mix of patio/rooftop/inside areas with a solid mix of new hip-hop and 90's dancy grooves ( I think they play Return of the Mack every time I'm there). FFS, I went to this place after the guy out front said 15 minutes till last call. So me and 2 other lads went in, and ordered 3 rye and gingers for approx $20.. I gave the wench behind the bar a $3 tip and she BITCHED about it.. I said "you gave us the drink.. What did you expect?" She called some bouncer over to kick me out.. I said "hold on, I didn't do anything?" And asked to speak to the manager.. the bouncer then crushed my drink, and the manager asked me to step outside to discuss.. I said "hold on a second I did nothing wrong". They then took away the pizza I brought into the bar, and called the police over, who literally couldn't care less if you were right or wrong.. Long story short, avoid this place like the plague.. they will steal your cash, credit card, and whatever is available. I had a good time in many places in Austin, but THE SHAKESPEARE PUB was the worst!! Avoid at all cost!! I declined the charge on my CC.. fuck those guys.. read more
