I try not to give bad reviews. I bought a 6 dollar (gf) hamburger with everything but tomatoes, water, and a small shake. It cost 14 dollars and the burger was just meat and bread. I realized nothing was on it when we got home. The service was terrible. When I went up to get order I was yelled at for not saying my name clearly and the second time I said it I wasn't acknowledged, she just left the bag and walked away. This place in the Third Ward was super cool. It was like a Steak 'N Shake with a great vibe and better. The menu is very similar to Steak 'N Shake, but it is a little more condense and their focus was more on custard rather than shakes. I don't really care for ice cream so that aspect does not affect me either. I had the double SmokeStack with cheese fries and lord have mercy. The fries were just smothered in the cheese and it was everything I was looking for. The portion sizes were just right, but run a little smaller. However, with the caloric value, that's ok with me. Don't be afraid to ask for refills of a drink. Because there's not a fountain outside, that doesn't mean they won't fill it up for you. It is a little pricier than Steak 'N Shake, which is no bueno, but worth it at the same time for the quality of the food you're getting. It's kind of like Chipotle, Qdoba, Noodles and Company of the burger world in a way. It's fast food, but it's a little more about the quality. The inside of this place was cool. It has a very modern look with cool fresh wooden tables and accent of green against steel industrial walls and ceilings. I was extremely impressed by their soft opening! I was lucky enough to grab tickets to their family and friends event which included a $15 meal and all extra proceeds were donated to groundwork's Milwaukee (which first off good job on picking a local non-profit that totally deserves the help!) The line moved quickly and everyone had a smile on their face. I ordered the shroom burger, fries, and the shake shack concrete. Went over to the tables and the open table was immediately wiped down for me. The wait for the food wasn't long at all (long enough that I know things were cooked to order, but not too long that I noticed how long I waited). My shroom burger was literally bursting with cheese! Delicious. I like the size of the burgers as most places these days have huge portions that no one needs to eat. I just wish they had a healthy option (aka not fried or smothered in cheese). The fries were pretty good. Fresh, crinkle cut, lightly salted, and a good portion size. The shake attack concrete I'm not actually sure if I received that one or the brownie one as it was chocolate icecream and something made of dense chocolate was on top, not sure if it was brownie or their truffle bites. It was very fudgy and delicious regardless. The portion size was again what a normal person should want to eat, not those huge portions of 10,000 calories! I appreciate when a restaurant gives me the amount I aught to be eating! We stayed for awhile and a few servers came around to grab our trays when we were done and check in on us. They were very attentive and not crazed considering the place was now packed! Overall a very successful event and I'm so excited for them to officially open. Yummy is what I can say about this place!!! It just recently opened up in Milwaukee and has been a hit! Their burger and chicken sandwiches are so good here! I always order the chicken sandwich here for my manager and coworker, they're in love with it. I always get the "shakburger" and that's really good too! They're good portion sized for the fries and burgers. We've tried the cheese fries here too and the cheese is really fresh! I love their app as well. It's easy to use, order, and gives great text alerts of when your order is ready to be picked up. I don't normally have to wait when I pick up my food when I order on the app so that's always great too, especially picking up on lunch! I also had their special cookie shake and that was really good too!! Loved the sprinkles on it and the taste! Update: So, I originally gave this place 3 stars based on the shakes being meh and the prices too high. I really didn't see myself coming back... But one day I found myself craving it and now I've gone back several times. I LOVE the shroom burger and the shakes seen to have gotten better. I still think the prices are too high, and I don't like that the only vegetarian burger is a few dollars more than a normal burger, but I guess it hasn't stopped me from going back. Here is (most of) my original review: I was here for the soft opening, and I went around dinner time. It was packed, but I didn't mind as it was a soft "friends and family" opening and we got our meals for free. I have no affiliation with the business or anyone who works there. We were greeted warmly by the staff at the desk who gave us a menu and recommended a few things which was nice. I was relieved to see there was a vegetarian option for a burger, a 'Shroom Burger. It's a fried portabella mushroom with munster cheese and other standard burger toppings. My friend and I ordered this, and my partner ordered the Shack Stack Burger. We all got shakes as well. The line did not take long, especially considering the large amount of people. The staff rung us up quickly. They have many nice, laminated menus as well as big screens near the line that tell you all the menu items. My burger and shake together was about 13 dollars (again, I got it for free due to the soft opening). The interior is nice. Big open space, nice windows, and plenty of seating that isn't cramped. I also really like that the seating doesn't go too close to where you order your food, so it doesn't make standing in line hectic. The shroom burger is honestly amazing. The portabella mushroom is friend and full of cheese. It's small, but very filling. It's pricey for sure but it's so good I don't mind. Warning - cheese will probably pour out of it when you bite it. Try to hold it upright! And if you just got it the cheese will be ridiculously hot so be careful of that too. You can order your meals to go with an app, which I've used a few times now. Parking is really difficult though so I'd plan to get there a little earlier than the pickup time if you need to park and walk in yourself. read more

Just getting into the area, needed something quick to eat after what seemed to be a day of travel. Easy enough to order. However there was only register open with about 8 guest in line and 20 people behind the counter. The workers were pleasant. I tried the shack burger and cheese fries, cheese on the side for dipping. Saw that it had opened and thought I would try it. There were a lot of people waiting for food but no line to order it so I figured it would be quick. Unfortunately after waiting 40 min, wasting my entire lunch hour and having to stand while doing so, I got fairly mediocre food. My double shackburger was cold and also small. Worse my milkshake, the seasonal special Christmas Cookie shake, tasted as if someone had dumped salt into it. It was disgusting and inedible. I should not have been surprised. The staff was swamped. The woman distributing the food had to keep turning people away because even though their pagers went off she did not physically have their food. Leaving some of them to stand at the counter for 10 min or more even though their food was supposedly ready. I will not be going back to this location at least until they get some of this stuff figured out. read more

Let me first say that we got really lucky!! From the outside, we could see the place was really busy. Somehow, we found parking on Buffalo St., right in front of the restaurant. Then we walked in and were able to immediately order our food, without a wait. Lastly, we found the only open table to sit at and it was perfect for our group. As soon as we sat, a line formed and within minutes the line was out the door!! I tried the SmokeShack and was not disappointed. The burger was cooked perfectly and had just the right toppings. I also had bacon cheese fries which were delicious!! My wife and daughter each has the ShackBurger and were pleased. My little ones had hot dogs, french fries, and a Christmas cookie shake. Not a single complaint from anyone, except an hour later when we all felt as if we overindulged. Strange happening during our visit. A lady brought her labradoodle (w/ Green Bay Packer sweater) into the restaurant while she and her friends ate dinner. They happened to be seated directly next to us. A few employees continuously gave them the eye until finally the manager came out and said, "we don't allow dogs in the store." The guy in the group responded, "it's a service dog." The manager apologized and walked away without further discussion. As soon as the manager left, the guy proclaimed aloud to the woman, "told you that would work!" I won't deduct a star for the dog people being idiots, but I felt the manager could have asked a few more questions about the "service dog" proclamation. The Third Ward definitely needed something like Shake Shack, so in that regard I think this was a great addition to the neighborhood. I went in with high hopes but I was pretty disappointed. On the up side, the restaurant was super clean with lots of seating. Even during a busy lunch hour there were plenty of places to sit. The food however, was super overpriced and frankly, pretty bland. I had cheese fries that were lacking in seasoning and the cheese sauce had absolutely no flavor. I get that this is a chain, but if you roll into Wisconsin with a crappy cheese sauce, you're bound to disappoint a solid handful of people. I also had a root beer float which was pretty standard and nothing to write home about. The only reason I didn't buy a hamburger was because the cost seemed outrageous for just a burger! For the amount of money you'd spend on lunch here you could get a lot more exciting food just about anywhere in the neighborhood. read more

After my meal, I went up to get a chocolate malted shake. Simple, right? It was over 6 dollars. For a shake. Am I being petty? I mean that just seems so expensive and it was not a large size by any means. The shake itself tasted fine. Definitely not better than DQ, and certainly not better than Kopps & Culver's. The quality was good, but not for the price. Maybe our Midwest expectations are too high for the 'gourmet fast food to price' ratio, but I just don't expect to spend $17 at a fast food restaurant when I'm eating (conservatively) for one. Attended the yelp and friends and family event here for the opening. What a line already! Overall this was my first shake shack experience and was not disappointed. We ordered a shake burger and smoke shack burger, cheese fries, regular fries and a chocolate shake. The burgers were really good. I like a good mix of textures specifically with the burger patty. It is good to have some of that griddle crispiness and char on the burger to add a crunch in my opinion and they had it! The sauce was a little overpowering but good. Highly recommend getting the cheese fries and cheese on the side so you can dip and your fries don't get soggy. The crinkle fries were very good. The shake was good but think next time we will opt to get it malted instead. A really fun event to be a part of and hope it does well in the third ward. read more

I had the chance to go to the preview opening of the new Shake Shack in the Third Ward & it could not have been a better experience. Although it was packed (as it should be) the meal was DELICIOUS. I got the Shake Shack burger, cheese fries, and a vanilla shake. I will be back for seconds, thirds, and fourths because this burger was so good. Parking was a pain. The food is very good. Nice soft buns and the meat and toppings are good. I had the peppermint shake, it has a nice peppermint flavor, not too strong. Excitement across the board for a new burger place in MKE. All my friends were raving about how amazing Shake Shack is and how thankful they were to have one so close by. It being my first time, I walk in to a beautiful atmosphere worthy of the hype- modern but comfy, and polite servers. It was 10 pm and still busy; I have a feeling it's always busy at this location. Ordered a shack burger, fries, and a shake with whipped cream( didn't know they charged 50 cents extra for the topping). My total was little over 15$. I was okay with the price because it's my first time here and I wanted to get a taste of what the restaurant could offer. Fries were delicious and crispy, Shake was pretty good but not worthy of the 6$ I spent on it. The thing that lacked most for me was the ShackBurger- classic burger, American cheese,lettuce,tomato and Shack Sauce... the sauce is good, mayo based I believe. But to me, the burger was nothing more than a fast food chain burger, slightly pink, with a soggy bun. Overall, to put it out straight, the hype is overrated. My son lives in NYC, and our tradition when I visit him there is to hit up Shake Shack asap. I was very happy to see them open a restaurant in Milwaukee, because now I can visit with my daughter, who lives there, as well. I'd read a pre-opening article describing how the Milwaukee version of Shake Shack was going to have a distinctly Milwaukee vibe, but upon my first visit, I detected none of that. It seems fairly identical to the Manhattan one we go to. Not a problem, just was surprised. Madison has Culver's, which is great, but one thing we don't have in Madison is a casual, fast food burger place that serves MALTS. I mean real malts. Ice cream, not custard. If there is, I don't know about it. I love that I can get one at Shake Shack, and they're delicious, as is all of their food. The presentation is a cut above Culver's, and they use yellow or white onions rather than the red ones Culver's uses, which I also prefer. The price point is higher; a single deluxe burger and fries and a small malt will set you back about $14. Not outrageous, considering the location in the Third Ward, but be warned. Random things I like: the fully stocked and clean bar where you get your own condiments and water. The packs of germicidal disposable table wipes that are on top of each trash receptacle. For a flu-phobic person, this is a wonderful thing to have available. The tables are kept clean, but it's nice to be able to wipe everything down personally before I settle in. read more

Lot of TV hype about people lining up around the country for new Shake Shacks so we had to try it. Trendy, stainless steel, but cold park-bench interior. Not only no line, but few customers at noon on a Tuesday. Interesting choices, although I can't figure out wine with burgers even if it's just table wine. The fries were good. The plain burger with tomato and onions was thin, yet tasty. My wife felt the fried chicken sandwich was good. The "frozen custard" had a very off flavor (almost like yoghurt). The cashier could not explain the difference between a blended custard and one with all the fixings for $2 more. Prices are on the high side. Service is slow (need to study at McDonalds). Good to have experienced it. Probably good to have a fast-food place in the 3rd Ward, but given that the food came "slowly", we'll check out other "slow" places in the Ward before we're back. read more

Saturday 6/30 of Summerfest - hottest day of the year with humidity. Took the freeway flyer to Big Gig for main stage show that evening. Instead of fighting the crowds and standing at Summerfest for pricey food - walked to Shake Shack had a chicken sandwich and beer before the main stage concert. Air conditioning, a table to sit at and reasonably priced beer and food - could not have been more enjoyable. Great way to start an evening at Summerfest.... Two of us went for an early dinner on a Saturday. The place wasn't very busy but they were having a lot of problems with orders apparently. I ordered with the app. I got a message our order was ready and walked to the pickup area. It probably took another 10-15 minutes after that for our food to be put out. I thought maybe it was just the app, but there was someone at the counter with one of the buzzer things they give you if you order in line complaining that his stuff was not ready after his buzzer went off. The burger: Bun was good, the rest was a lukewarm disappointment. The fries: forgettable but I guess that means I don't have anything negative to say at least. The shake: This was the highlight. I got a chocolate cookies and cream. It did have a strong chocolate flavor to it. If I'm very close by and craving a shake I might go again only for that.
