We had been looking at this restaurant for some time and decided that today being our last day in town that we would have this. The hostess or person standing at the door could've been a little more helpful but I won't knock them too bad for this. We stood in line with others before us for at least 3-5 mins before we asked if we needed to place our orders on the tablets. They had a nice setup and it is where you place your order (kiosk tablets). We placed our orders pretty easily. We both ordered the Chick'n Shack with a side of cheese fries. Our food came out pretty quickly and was fresh and hot. The chicken sandwich was delicious makes me wish I had gotten two! But with the Cheese fries that would've been over doing it. Came here the other night and was fairly irritated. 1) they didn't have anyone at the front taking orders. So the only option was ordering on the kiosks. Of course they have a kiosk closed for "social distancing". (Mind you, there was no one wiping the screens off between uses). So this was bottle necking everyone trying to order right to the front so they could all stack on top of each other. 2) they don't give you anything on your tray except the food. So you have to make trips up to the counter constantly to get forks, knives, napkins, ketchup, straws, and literally anything else. 3) the size of the shake for the price was absolutely ridiculous. It was $5.29 for a tiny shake. TINY. You can go to Chick-fil-A and get a shake twice the size for $3. And it's just as good. Skip the shake for sure. 4) the food in general was tasty and hot. Not gonna dock them on that. 5) the men's bathroom was out of order. Obviously not necessarily something that can be helped. So they had everyone using the women's restroom. Once again not a problem necessarily but they had a stall closed in the name of "social distancing" (cause COVID goes through plastic walls, right?) so everyone was lined up out the door waiting to use the bathroom. I stopped by at about 8:30 on opening night, and the Shake Shack was still hoppin'! For fast food burgers, fries, and shakes, the Shake Shack is legit! The namesake Shack Burger is well seasoned beef on a softer, super fresh bun that's a little sweet. Perfectly ripe tomatoes, fresh leaf lettuce and Shack Sauce were delicios - probably the best tomatoes I've ever had on a burger. My only complaint with the burger is it's kinda small. I think next time I might go for the double. Fries are crinkle cut, which isn't really my thing, but these were nice and crispy. The shake though! Honestly did not know shake shack had hotdogs until one of my friends told me... i honestly did not know what to expect especially because shake shack is a known burger place but apparently before they blowed up they were known for their hotdogs! controversial opinion: i genuinely like hotdogs like sometimes they just hit different LOL. This was my first trip to a Shake Shack anywhere. After hearing so much about this place, I was excited to try it. but I was also trying to temper expectations. There was a west coast burger place that was also hyped very high. And I probably would have loved it if I just happen to stumble upon it. But I am big about not overhyping things. If things are labeled as the "best", you set yourself up for disappointment. So with that attitude, I went in with an open mind. The ordering process was very easy. The people up front were very friendly and was very familiar with the menu and what we were ordering. I didn't know that there was an option for a double. Otherwise I would have gone with that. That was really my only disappointment. Unlike another burger place I went recently that I was glad I only ordered the single. I wish I had ordered the double. Disappointing and kind of dirty. We met up here with my daughter and son in law on a Thursday evening for a quick bite. I've never eaten there before, but my husband had been there once and was not thrilled. No one greets you when you walk in. No one was there. You order at a screen, of which there are three and they were absolutely filthy and covered in fingerprints and smears. They looked like they hadn't been wiped off for weeks--and that should be happening as a matter of course, every hour. Just gross. There are no workers nearby if you have any questions so good luck with that. You don't get your drink cup there, so I went to the serving area and asked for it. They had to check my order to make sure I wasn't stealing (even though they gave us more cups when they brought our order out!). The food was meh. My burger was ok--it looked like it had been slapped together pretty carelessly, half the burger hanging off the bun. Little care taken. We ordered a burger each, to servings of friends, and two drinks (two of us got water). That was $70! The burgers were ok--seems fries were subpar. The worst part is, I had gotten a couple of little paper cups fill of ketchup for our fries and when the IDIOT who was working in the dining room brought us our food, he slammed the tray down onto the cups, causing ketchup to squirt everywhere. Both my husband and I tried to stop him but he FOUGHT us to lam that tray down. He did not apologize or offer to clean MUCHit up. He was a jerk, and was also wearing absolutely gross black gloves he was cleaning with and then serving food with--it was gross. I doubt I will ever return. The costly menu options might deter some, but Shake Shack is quickly becoming one of my favorite burger joints in Birmingham. The burgers are extremely well cooked, the toppings and condiments cut and proportioned out perfectly, and the buns are the perfect compliment. The cheese fries are highly addictive. Their shakes are also to die for, rivaling Chick fila in quality (which I assume is the standard for most). The space feels cramped, but the hip aesthetic makes up for it, and the kiosks provide great convientiance during the lunch rush. The staff is extremely friendly as well. I came back here this weekend with my friend Kimia M., and I'm sure glad I did. My experience here this weekend was so much better than my first experience. From getting to sit inside this time and not competing with flies for my food, I got to really appreciate the designs and decor this time. It's a really cute place. Cute because it was rather small. Since we went during lunch time on a weekend, there were no single tables left, but a large narrow table in the middle meant to be shared. I ordered a single Smokeshack this time. Delicious. It's a burger with bacon and cherry peppers. I had no idea what cherry peppers were, but they were really the highlight of my burger! They tasted like pickled pimento peppers and added a lot of acidity to my burger. A double Smokeshack would have probably been the perfect burger, but I was wanting fried so didn't opt for that. The crinkle fries. Probably the only thing I would upgrade on. I was debating on regular or cheese fries, and I think I'll have to get cheese fries next time. The regular fries just didn't do much for me. Kimia and I shared a chocolate/vanilla custard. Delicious. One of the main things I will always look forward to when coming to Shake Shack. It's been super packed every time I have come here, and it makes sense. It's the only fast food place that's actually located in the Summit. My wife had never been to Shake Shack, so we stopped in. I ordered the Smoke Burger and she had the Shack Burger. Both burgers were good. I'd say mine was even a very good burger. The restaurant was clean and the service was fast. But, my wife said what I was thinking, "this place is a little over priced." Two burgers fries and drinks were $25. This is a price based on brand and reputation. They have every right to charge what they want. The burgers are very good, just not $7 each good. I also had the vanilla sea salt shake. Also very good. I was a little disappointed with the fries because it was a small basket of smaller fries. For the price, they can afford to amp up there fry game. The burger was good itself, the bacon was crispy and the burger had the crispy edges to it, the only problem I had with my burger was the cherry peppers... their were a lot of them and by the time I got the end of my burger my bun was soaked and soft, wasn't a good taste at all. Overall the restaurant has a dope look and vibe, from the ordering tour meal at one end and getting a buzzer to pick your food up from the other end of the restaurant, I liked that. First you must understand this is an upscale fast food restaurant. It's not a gourmet burger place so it won't be the best burger in town. That still falls to Chez Fon Fon for me. But if your up at the summit and feel like a quick meal of burger and fries and definitely upscale from any other burger fast food...this is the place to grab it. We went for the basic burger, fries and shared a shake. The burgers are fresh and good tasting burgers. On the fries, I never met a crinkle cut fry I liked, until meeting these. They are perfectly crispy on the outside and when you bite in, there is a soft creamy potato in the middle. Changed my mind on how crinkle cuts can be good. The shake was thick as all get out and really needed a spoon until it melted down. Don't normally drink a shake given the calories, but is it is Shake Shack so jumped in and if that's what you are looking for, SS will give you a good one to drink down. We don't have In & Out Burgers...and never will...but for the next best representation of a fast foolish type of burger and fries, this is your place. read more

As a frequent reviewer, I sometimes think I must be too generous with ratings because I give lots of 4's & 5's, even to places that aren't the best I've ever visited, because they are good at what THEY do at an appropriate prices. Well, that wasn't the case tonight after my first visit to the new Shake Shack in Bham. Let's start with the burgers. They're good. Not great or even close. Better than some, but not as good as plenty of others, such as Mooyah, Five Guys or even Wendy's...and definitely not for the price! ($9.69 for a double with bacon). The crinkle cut fries were above average - crispy and enjoyable - but also overpriced at $2.49 for a small tray that should be about the same amount as a small size order at Wendy's or McDonald's. But the fries with bacon & cheese weren't very good and not remotely worth the price ($4.69). The blood orange ginger lemonade was today's feature lemonade - they apparently have a different flavor each day. It was excellent with a great taste and just a bit frothy. Even it was pricy at $2.79 for a small or $3.59 for a large (equal to a medium at the typical fast food place), but definitely memorable and a real treat. The only disappointment with it came when I mentioned to a nearby server that it was empty when I got a refill (at 7 p.m.). Her response? "Yeah, I know. That's the last of it for today." Seriously??? On a moderately busy Tuesday night? At 7 p.m.??? At that point, I had concluded that the whole experience had been a "3" at best. But then my daughter asked if we had noticed that one of the concrete (custard) flavors was peach pie. Wow, that sounded good, so we decided to share it. As we ate the first few bites, no one said much. But after I got a bite that was mainly crust, I commented that I wasn't all that impressed with it, especially given the price - $5 for a small bowl. My wife and daughter both immediately chimed in that the overall flavor didn't seem right and finally concluded that the crust had a decidedly chemical flavor to it. The ambience and furnishings are definitely cool and the outdoor seating is a big hit. If only the food lived up to the environment! We all concluded as we walked around The Summit that this will be our one and only visit here...nearly $60 for 3 burgers, two orders of fries, two drinks (my wife had water), and a small bowl of custard. I really have no idea what makes this place a hit with so many people at these prices...overrated and underdelivered! I've heard about Shake Shack for years, so when I learned one was opening in Birmingham, I was excited to see what all the hype was about. We stopped in around 8 for dinner the day after opening day. Upon entry there was a choice to go to the line serviced by people or place our order through self service at one of the three kiosks. We opted to place our order with a person, particularly because we needed a bit of time to look at the menu. After we placed our order we were given a pager that buzzed when our order was ready. The place was packed (remember it just opened yesterday), but we lucked up and immediately found a table for two. Now for the food. I ordered the Shack Burger, single. The bun was soft, burger nicely seasoned, and cheese perfectly melted. It came with lettuce and a special sauce. I opted for no tomatoes. If you're a Bham local, the size and consistency of the burger reminded me of Jack Brown's. I appreciated the burger to bun ratio and the fact the burger wasn't too greasy. I'm usually not a fan of crinkle cut fries, but they were a nice consistency and made for a nice compliment to the burger. I also ordered the seasonal lemonade, watermelon basil. It was delicious, very fresh and not too sweet. Although I didn't have room for dessert, after spying our neighbors' ice cream selections, I would definitely return. I think there's a Birmingraham concrete with my name on it. I was uber impressed by the service. Everyone with whom we interacted was friendly and efficient. Several people visited our table and the manager checked on us a few times. They appeared to be very concerned about our satisfaction. This place was great for a quick bite. We were there on Sunday about 1pm and it was crowded but the lines move fast and they have a kiosk to order so you don't really need to wait in line. I got the shroom burger and it was crunchy and yummy. My hubby got the smoke shack burger which was almost perfect. The only disappointment was the "concrete" we ordered called the shack attack. If something is labeled concrete then you would expect it to be stiff custard like concrete, right? This was a loose runny shake in a bowl. It had great taste but not what we were looking for. Finally the Grand opening! And it was great! It's in the summit and in a prime location. They handed out samples of the vanilla custard and I absolutely loved it so obviously I ordered that and I ordered their lemonade. We got cheese fries for being in the first 205 people there today and which was nice. The custard which was basically ice cream was so so so good and I would definitely go back. The lemonade was good. The cheese fries were cold but to no fault of their own. It was still good. A lot of people could sit in the restaurant and outside of it. Their staff was excellent. Shake Shack had an appropriately long line for the opening day. They had a shuttle running from another area in the Summit, which was a plus. The entire order took about an hour from ordering to receiving the food. I ordered the double shack burger, Cheese fries, and a Shark attack custard. The food was not as great As I was expecting, but by no means was it bad. The hype surpassed the taste and it was a bit pricey for the environment. There was limited space inside so people were pouring onto the grass to eat. However, this is most likely due to the initial opening. It was not as gourmet as I expected, so I have mixed feelings. We ordered the double with the ranch bacon, the single bacon and the bacon mushroom stuffed with cheese. The mushroom burger was the best out of all of them. They take a mushroom cap and stuff it with cheese and then bread it and deep fry it until it's golden. It is amazing! The fries are your average crinkle cuts. For the style of burger you are paying for, the fries don't match the burger. Hand cut will be the way to go. The shakes were ok and need some work.
