I am SO disappointed to have to leave a review like this as I had high hopes for this restaurant. I made NYE plans a couple weeks ago and usually would go to a Jeff Ruby's restaurant but decided to give 52 a try. I looked through many reviews before reserving and most were good except some that implied the service was lacking. I hoped to that I would experience a great evening but unfortunately received the non-existent service that others have also experienced.
We arrived at 52 and of course it was very busy because it was NYE. We waited about 20 minutes making our 8:45 reservation turn into a 9:05 spot... ok, fine, it's NYE, we don't fault them for being busy. The front desk staff seemed frazzled and tired offering a dull presence. This makes me a bit puzzled because this restaurant usually stays pretty busy on a normal weekend, so I am not sure why there were so many stressed faces. The lobby was completely full of people waiting on their tables. The fire inside the entrance is a nice, romantic touch.
It was our turn to be seated and the lady seating us didn't say one word. She sat us in the bar area which was very disappointing as we were attempting to have somewhat of a romantic dinner. Unfortunately I cannot offer a review of the dining area because of this. Whatever, we got over it, quick. Nothing to really complain about in the big scheme of things. We waited for 10 minutes before the waitress came to our table. We then waited another 10 minutes for her to bring our drinks to us. We noticed the other tables were being taken care of frequently, and didn't understand why we were the only ones not being checked on, or served quickly. After she dropped off the drinks, she didn't say a word and hustled away. We were trying to order an appetizer and salads, but didn't have a chance to. We also were the only table without the candle lit and since I am a hopeless romantic, I really wanted the darn candle lit. Neither of us smoke, so we couldn't light it ourselves. Another server came near our table and I flagged her down. I asked her to light our candle and to take our appetizer order. She lit the candle and sent the waitress to our table to take our appetizer order.
The waitress came back and took our appetizer order. She didn't offer any information or suggestions on any of the food. We ordered the stuffed shrimp mushrooms and she took off. We did not talk to her one time until I flagged her down to ask for our checks at 10:30pm.
A gentleman brought out our appetizer and we had still not placed our order. He offered some nice suggestions and was very charming. He also took our food order. A few moments later, our shrimp mushrooms came out and my husband loved them. I am not a seafood lover, but the shrimp was very good. Our plates and empty drink glasses sat on the edge of our table until our main course came out around 10pm. It was a different person that brought out our main courses and cleared our tables. We still had no drinks. The waitress would rush into the area, help her other tables and rush right by our table back out. What the heck? I mean it was NYE so I know we at least looked like we were worthy of a good tip. Why was she not helping us?
Finally my husband flagged her down for two refills... which didn't come out for 15 minutes and were brought by someone else. The food-- I ordered the filet which comes with mashed red potatoes and asparagus and my husband ordered the sea bass. My steak had no flavor but was cooked well. I did not like the tangy flavor of the potatoes or the SMALL portion... probably two tablespoons of potatoes. The asparagus had no flavor either. My husband loved his Sea bass and I actually enjoyed some of it too. It was perfect.
It was 10:20 and still, the waitress or no one else checked on our food/us. We had to be somewhere at 11pm so we were debating ordering desserts... but, it was NYE and darn it, I really wanted the whole night to be perfect. Finally a server was walking by and we asked to see the desserts. She promptly brought them to our table and we chose the peanut butter mousse, and the Cannoli. They were both good but nothing too exciting. They come out in tiny little shooter glasses so make sure you order one for each person. We also ordered cappuccinos which were good.
Finally, as plates and dessert sat on our table, I waived at the waitress for our check. We left around 10:45pm. As we were leaving, there were no words from the Hostesses telling us goodbye. The restaurant gave all the tables $25 gift cards to return to the restaurant during a designated week. That was a nice touch but the "not redeemable for alcoholic beverages" threw off my happy hour agenda ;).
All in all, it was very underwhelming and I cannot say we will return. I had high hopes for this place as I know they have a beautiful piano and singer during happy hours and so forth. Maybe it was a case of a terrible server... read more
