A total gem in a sea of chains and nothingness! Their seeded sourdough bread is unbelievable and the place has a very cozy locals stop-in vibe. The owner hand-makes the pumpkin mash they use in their seasonal latte, and all of their "sweeter" drinks - mocha, pumpkin spice, and burnt caramel latte (!!!) - are designed to be low on sweetness factor. The space is small- just a few bar seats in the windows. So it's not a place to post up with your laptop! But a very cute spot for a great coffee & toast of all kinds. read more

Small, delicious, well-run coffee and breakfast spot with minimal seating. If you're looking for a quick, excellent breakfast and great coffee, come here. There are 8 stools against tiny counters, so this isn't a place to bring a crowd to relax, but for such a minimal operation they put out high quality food. We had the Welsh rarebit (think cheese on toast) with ham and fig-and-ginger chutney, and the smoked trout and egg on toast. Toast is a theme, and they do it exceptionally well, with great attention to detail. Coffee was superb. read more

Prior to coming here, I read another review saying how they know how to toast their bread just right... I didn't really know what that meant, or think much of it... But now I do! They have the perfect bread for toasting and it's toasted to the perfect crispness. And the the addition of pb and and spicy jam is the perfect touch! The toast is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside... And the spicy jam (including several different options) is a unique touch! We had this while traveling to SF...but now I can't wait to be able to come back to town for more! read more

Great service, tasty toasts, good coffee. Not bad for a small space on the street. Could use some larger signage, but I found it. Much easier the second time. Nice selection of toasts other than the "usual" avocado. Pretty quick service, which is important for many of the walk-ins here. Not a lot of space to sit and eat anyway. Had a latte to go yesterday (burnt caramel) which was both nicely decorated and tasty. Lots of regulars seem to pass through here, usually a good sign. read more

This place is my go to for coffee. I've tried many different Gibraltar's around the area, but none as good as this. The coffee is smooth and never burned. Additionally, I never buy avocado toast at restaurants because I get really angry paying so much for a piece of bread and avocado, but their toast is so worth the extra buck. Lots of flavor and a huge amount of food. The toast is thick and smothered with oils and butter and the avocado is drizzled with garlic oil and everything is made to perfection. When you run a coffee shop, you should really avoid being rude to your customers. Most likely they're in need of caffeine and not in the mood for it. Scullery is small and overpriced like most SF coffee places. Their redeeming quality is the friendly barista and that they are dog friendly. Today the friendly barista wasn't there and the guy working the register was an absolute jerk to us. He insisted on helping someone else, even though she said twice that she wasn't ready and asked us to go ahead. It was almost comical watching him flail around to get her attention insisting she go before us when she was clearly not ready. Unfortunately I WAS that customer in need of caffeine and thought he was absurd. He never said a second word about it and watched two loyal customers walk out the door. This probably won't change your mind about going or not going, but it was pretty shitty and awkward; and worth a post. Please be nice to your customers. All they want to do is give you their hard earned money. read more

I am a millenial, but I do not appreciate this place for a number of reasons: 1. walked in, the crowd was really rude, we were trying to figure out what to get, and politely asked this guy if he was able to move over a little-- with a snarky look and a bit of an angry demeanor, he moved over, only to step back into his original location as he engaged in a convo with a friend of his. The owner(?) watched this go down, and did nothing. They do not have menus that can be read off of a piece of paper, which makes this process very difficult. After finally ordering our toast, we paid $28 for 2.... and waited about 45 minutes for toast... you can see why I am angry. This is the slowest moving restaurant I have been to thus far in SF.... I have been to a lot of slow places, but this takes the cake. We left the establishment, vowing that we will never return, and we definitely have not looked back at all. My wife and I recently visited a long time friend in San Francisco and found ourselves at Scullery two out of the four mornings we had in SF. The burnt caramel latte was a touch of heaven. No need for sweetener, but also not too sweet. It had a rich flavor without being overpowering. The avocado toast was good on our first visit...it does not soggy up the toast as it is neatly sliced and placed the toast and seasoned with cracked pepper and sea salt. It also checked the box on "white boy hipster who loves avocado ate avocado" which I was hoping to do since I booked my flight. My wife, however, hit it big by ordering the Welsh Rarebit. It is a simple dish - thick whole grain toast with melted aged cheddar. The wife threw a curveball and asked for an overeasy egg on top. You can also add ham or turkey. I had one bite and was sold. Our first visit was great as we had a long chat with Mauricio and Chow and they gave us great recommendations for things to do and places to see around the many o. Side note - it's not in the heart of skid row, but it is right on the edge of it. RIGHT on the edge. You often see seedy characters walking by and even peeking in to ask for money. We were thrown and upset by the homeless situation. Aside from that, we would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves great, unique, and delicious food and drink served with a smile. read more

Fairly expensive for a coffee, but I thought it was worth it for a nice treat. I had the burnt caramel latte and it was great! The server was very attentive and quick. Payment is easy. Customer service is terrible. Like other reviews had previously stated, this place is discriminatory & racist. I just moved into the neighborhood and I passed by this shop a couple times, this morning I decided to finally try it. The two people who were working this morning were whispering to each other while looking at me funny. I had headphones in my ears but no music on and I felt like I was being judged by them. The person who took my order was condescending & rude. In addition to the drink I got I also ordered 2 croissants, but only received 1. I asked him if he only charged me for 1 and he gave me an annoyed look, saying "yeah?" Because of my anxiety and the fact that I was running late, I said nevermind. But anyone who has worked in customer service should know that a question like that prompts a follow-up. I used to be a cashier & server for a long time. I know how it is, sometimes I blow it off because I know what work is like and understand that people have bad days. I was going to let it go until I realized that the only two other people in the store who were WHITE were receiving nice greetings, and excellent treatment. After reading the other two reviews that called this place racist, my suspicions were confirmed. I will not be coming back and telling others to stay away from this place. Thanks for making me uncomfortable and ruining my morning! Just another gentrified overpriced coffee shop who hates non-white people. read more

This cafe is small but super cute! It's on my way to work which makes it convenient - and it's close to a lot of hotels in the Nob Hill area. It's away from the rushed busy-ness of Union Square. You order at the counter - menu has all the coffee drinks you'd expect but I usually go for a cup of PG Tips tea. If there's a stool free to sit at, say you want your order 'for here' and your hot drink comes served in a cute yellow cup and saucer with a little spoon that looks like it came from your granny's silverware drawer. If you're hungry do not miss a chance to order a Welsh Rarebit toast - and you get to pick from a half dozen yummy chutneys they'll add on top. They also have avocado toast and PB and J. Everything is quick and scrumptious. Totally recommend you stop here when you're in the neighborhood! read more

Tucked away gem! I particularly love Toffee Nut flavors and was shocked to see fresh made toffee as the special flavor option. I ordered an americano with toffee nut and it was one of the best I've ever had. The fresh toffee is very unique, I'm sure it would be incredible in a latte.
