This is a cute and very tasty bakery! My husband and I were in town for the weekend and wanted some local coffee and pastries so decided to give this place a shot and are very happy we did! Got there about 9am on a Saturday and there still were plenty of fresh made items to choose from. They can make specialty coffee orders and my husband tried the strawberry lemonade which was delicious. We had a quiche (crust was excellent!), bagel, coffee cake, and blueberry muffin. Everything was delicious. We sat outside at one of their 2 street side tables. There is no inside seating, however there is the park across the street with additional places to sit. Delicious bakery in a lovely location in historic Milford! I got the turkey sandwich on the freshest bread and it came with a free cookie - chocolate buttery goodness. I brought my husband home a cheddar and chive scone and a chocolate chip cookie and he devoured them! Can't wait to go back and try more - their salads looked sooo good and come with a side of bread! The only downside is limited seating - there are four tables outside and a bar inside that seems more for quick grab to-go orders. I probably haven't written a review sooner because they don't need it like some businesses. This is a well established local bakery with lines out the door on the weekends. Most locals know to order ahead(on Toast app) during the week whether it's breakfast or lunch. I'd say as a family we eat here twice per week. For breakfast the pizza, sandwich and quiche are all very good and well executed. For lunch I'm either getting a salad or one of these rotating sandwiches. I don't have a go to because they're all great. High quality and again well executed, meaning the perfect balance of all ingredients. Okay finally the bakery. Every sandwich starts with the bread and they nail it almost every time. Since they started baking sourdough we pick up from them weekly. When they make sourdough varies but they have other breads. They have a few staples for those with a sweet tooth and we typically get a chocolate chip cookie and/or the holiday cookie. So many options here but their muffins and scones are also great. There's no where to sit inside but they've got a few tables and chairs out front and you can sit across the street at the picnic tables on the green. Final note, the owner seems to set the tone with a friendly staff and good vibe overall. Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon hoping to grab a quick lunch. Unfortunately, their lunch menu is not available on Sundays and we had to resort to their bakery case. The only "breakfast" sandwich they had left was a pre-made egg and cheese on a multi-grain roll. Surprisingly better than I expected (bread was hearty and substantial), I just wished I could customize a little more like adding a meat. We also picked up a brownie and cupcake and the baked goods were two thumbs up. I would like to come back to try their lunch menu another day. Everything is baked fresh daily. They have a great selection of pastries and even bagels if you get there early enough. I recommend preordering and getting there early if there is something you definitely want. Staff is friendly, efficient if you are in a rush in most cases and helpful if they run out of something to make an alternate suggestion. Love this place and the team works so hard- so tip them for their smile! They have a ton of good stuff on the menu but I usually stick to the pecan bars, ciabatta bread, and the best iced latte-- but made with much less milk than the normal order. The blueberry scone-consistency is everything you expect from a scone, light muffin-like and a tender crisp in the crust. Blueberry taste was faint but overall very good scone. They sell whole loafs of Artisanal Breads for $5-$7 like Ciabatta, Honey Flax, Multigrain Loaf, Brioche, Challah, Cranberry Pecan Rye, plus Stadium Pretzels and rolls. Man oh man, is this a wonderful bakery. Our breakfast experience here was stellar. It was as good a breakfast as we've had in a while. The breakfast line-up includes Egg & Cheese Sandwiches ($4.75), bagels with butter or cream cheese ($3.50), or $9 with smoked salmon, Yogurt Parfaits ($5.75), and BREAKFAST PIZZAS for $4.75 a slice. We split a big slice of breakfast pizza with cheese and tomatoes and an order of toast with smoked salmon, since they had already sold out of bagels. Our breakfast, including two coffees ran around twenty bucks and it was as good a breakfast as we've had in a while. The breakfast pizza was so cheesy, so flavorful, and so just plain delicious that it's hard to put into words. The wheat crust was thin and crunchy, and the toppings were plentiful and delicious. The bagel and smoked salmon, which became an order of toast and smoked salmon was perfection -simply perfection. The toast was great, and so was the salmon. There was a lot of it and it was pretty darned high quality too. The young lady who took our order was awesome! She was always smiling, had a great personality, was super helpful, and she rang up our order with the speed of a jazz pianist playing a dazzling solo. Scratch Bakery also sells a prodigious selection of croissants, pastries, scones (as big as a dinner plate), muffins, cookies, bars and brownies, They have a chilled showcase with yummy treats like Cream Puffs, Eclairs, Creme Brulee, Chocolate Pudding, Rice Pudding, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Apple Galettes, and Salted Caramel Tarts. We couldn't resist what we saw in their showcases, so after our meal we took home a humongous Cinnamon Scone (eight inches across) and a Chocolate Kouign-Amann made with croissant dough. They were both spectacular. You really need to check this place out, either for take-out or dine in. I'm confused...I thought I already left a review . Well, simply, Scratch is my favorite thing about moving back to Milford after being gone for 20 years. I've gotten various Scratch items to go most every weekend for the past 6 mos. Maybeeee there were a few 3.5-star items in there? Which is to say, still very, very good. Everything else? 4-5 stars every time. 3.5 stars is like...a backflip, where's 4-5 stars is like doing backflips across the entire gym floor. Breads, cookies, cakes, muffins, the chocolate pudding?! The lemon pot-de-crème?! And only recently did I start getting the sandwiches--fan-tastic! Plus, my dog loves the dog biscuits. And yes, I tried the biscuit once...it's not for us humans, haha, but I was curious to give it a nibble since it's made from very basic, perfectly edible ingredients. Anyway, my dog loves them! This is an unpopular opinion. But maybe because we've been spoiled with big city quality and service. There's SO much this town bakery can do better. Starting with customer service. You walk in on any day and becuase there's no competition in town. You wait on average 10 minutes for anyone to acknowlege you waiting. Then you wait another 10 mins and realize what you got was oversweetened coffee (even though you asked for just one sugar) and meh bakery (5 lbs of butter on any dessert is bound to be tasty). On a busy day, you are waiting in line for at least 45 mins. Is it worth it? Absolutely not. Somoene can at least learn basic manners and acknowledge you??? The manager/owner will tell you they are simply very busy - which is obvious they are. Everyone is working diligently. But perhaps maybe hire someone who can work both customer service AND help with packing orders? If you want quality baked goods and quality bakery, the nearest is New Haven - G Bakery or Atticus. Scratch Baking has been on my bucket list for quite sometime and has got raving reviews from my fellow Yelp community and friends alike. It was such a disappointment when everything ordered was underwhelming. For my drink I got an iced coffee and it was just so so. For food, I split a croque monsieur and a cinnamon roll with my wife. The croque monsieur had good flavor but since they just reheat it the cheese was a little congealed and part of the ham was over cooked and almost inedible. I had higher hopes for the cinnamon roll as it looked out of this world. Unfortunately it was just as bad. We cut into it and it was so dense it was hard to cut. It was definitely overcooked as the bottom was burnt and hard to cut and eat. What you want out of a cinnamon roll is for it to be light and fluffy but we got the opposite. The flavor was really good just lacked a consistency to make it a good roll. I really wanted to love scratch. It's a cool spot and everyone on the staff was super friendly and speedy so it pains me to give this review. Maybe I ordered the wrong things? This is the best bakery I have ever been. The food is so good and the best thing they have is their cinnamon bun. They have one of if not the best cinnamon buns I have ever had. It is supper big and has a lot of frosting. They are always fresh, but if you want to try one for yourself, you're going to have to go before 12 since they sell out early. It is right in the center of downtown Milford and a perfect spot to come for breakfast and a coffee. The service is also great and they always are pleasant towards you.
