Needed some food and the shuttle dropped me off right across the street from this bakery so I stopped by around 8:30 AM on a weekday. There was no line but there were quite a few people waiting for their drinks and sitting around working which makes sense, the place is cozy and seems like a nice environment to work. I checked out their pastry display up front, then went to order. I got a Cronut, and they have several flavors including vanilla and blueberry and raspberry so I went for vanilla. I also got a small matcha latte. The Cronut was delicious, I liked the texture and the flavor. The matcha was unsweetened and they have simple syrup on the side to add to your liking. Overall my order was about $11. Good pastries and drink, I'd definitely stop by if I'm in the area again! read more

There's nothing like disappointment when you have been really excited about trying out a business you've not been to before and they do not meet the high you were having in anticipation until that visit. I made it over here as a bit of a squeeze to satisfy a friend while we were in the area even though I had more important things I was chasing on my calendar. There isn't any parking so it's a game of chance with street parking. The closest side streets were all residential and required a specific clearance. I certainly didn't want to receive a ticket, or worse, get towed. I circled a few times and eventually found street parking a little over 2 blocks out. Parking meters need to be paid unless it was a Sunday or holiday. If the weather was warmer, seating outside could've been taken advantage of. Sadly, the day I visited, there'd been snowfall so we didn't have that luxury. Upon entering, I noticed that there were no vacant seats in sight. The whole place was littered with people on their computers. Some who were on their devices were actually consuming cafe food and beverages while others were not. I wish they saved a few tables, maybe even a couple for dining customers only. At least that would leave people like myself who wanted to enjoy their drink and pastry on site. The only option was to take it to go. The process was all too transactional. It wasn't 'busy' that there was a line behind me. It felt like, let's get your order and get you going. I took home some cube croissants which I was really looking forward to sharing. It tasted old, and bland. The hazelnut filling was about the size of a teaspoon. Wish we could give it more stars. Too hard to make a choice must return again and again. Almond croissants are best ever. Pistachio croissants phenomenal. Egg sandwich was perfection. Service was great, patient with a newbie. Great selection of coffee, tea and beverages Love the music, clean, comfortable. So thankful for recommendation. Prepare to look for parking. read more

#14 in my NEW ENGLAND & NY COFFEE SHOP SERIES Located in East Rock is this cute coffee shop. They have a few other locations in New Haven, but I love the interior here as well as the lighting. However, they do not have wi-fi! If you were planning to do your work or study here, I would not recommend for this reason. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a coffee shop doesn't have wi-fi for guests... As for the coffee, I got a iced vanilla latte and it was okay. I don't think they added vanilla so I had to go to their self-serve station and add simple syrup. They also didn't make my drink and I had to go up 15 minutes after I ordered for them to make it. They didn't believe me and had to check the system to make sure I ordered even though it was the same person who took my order that looked... They do have delicious chocolate croissants though. Overall, I would not come back here. No wifi, bad service, mediocre coffee, but okay pastries. read more

Cute little bakery near Yale! Great ambience, lots of seating both inside and outside to work out of or just spend some time with friends. We tried their veggie quiche, pistachio square croissant and a mocha! Everything was great but a special mention for the croissant cause it was just the perfect amount of sweet. Defiantly not worth it!!! I got a cheesecake and was absolutely horrible it tasted like it had been burnt! I had ordered and paid for a croissant and didn't get in included in my order!! It can be frustrating when people misuse spaces meant for customers to linger over coffee or a meal, especially if it affects the business. It's a delicate balance for cafes to provide a welcoming environment for customers to relax while also ensuring turnover to accommodate others. Some patrons might not realize the impact of camping out without purchasing anything, I believe G cafe is a fenomenal place to go to enjoy the food and the vibe and computers campers kill the mood . An all-around great spot. This location has plenty of room to sit with several roomy tables and large windows, and is a good spot for remote workers. the vibe is quiet chatter, and it is tidy with a restroom (and even some parking spots out back) available. every time i've come here, the workers have been kind and my matchas and chais have been great. the almond croissant is to die for! they also have an assortment of other pastries and even breads! i also love the little colorful design on their cups :) read more

A great addition to the East Rock cafe scene! I love ordering the cafe au lait and a good sandwich while sitting either indoors or out on their patio and people watching in between working on my laptop. A great place to meet friends or clients with plenty of free street parking around. Service is super quick and friendly as well! A go-to for me! read more

When I first went to G cafe, the cashier not only gave us the wrong pastries, but also failed to include a pastry we paid for. When going back to retrieve the correct pastries, and the additional pastry we paid for, the cashier was unsympathetic and unhelpful. The coffee is watery and bitter. Though, some of their pastries are decent, like their cronuts, their scones were dry and lacking flavor, as well as their muffins. The one positive is they have nice, bright indoor seating with clean decor, and nice outdoor seating as well. read more

I used to live around here so I came here *all the time*! For work on my laptop mostly. I'd get the large vanilla lattes which were really great! They'd give me lots of energy and sometimes I'd even be really energized for a jog after. Also tried some of the pastries here. Two things to keep in mind though: (1) there is *no WiFi* at this cafe!!! So if you come to work then you'd have to either work without wifi or connect to your phone hotspot, and (2) it's quite popular so frequently all the nice working tables are taken. read more

I work in New Haven and take a walk with a few co-workers each morning for our break. This used to be our go to stop for coffee and occasional breakfast foods in the morning. We'll be looking for another option. Unfortunately there seems to be some recent staff turnover and the former manager is no longer at this location. She really cultivated a pleasant atmosphere for customers and her employees which made our morning coffee break all the more enjoyable. Another employee (Ellie maybe?) also no longer works mornings and she was really delightful and very quick with the orders. Unfortunately, The new manager is not very personable and doesn't seem to have a great relationship with the staff. Also, some of the morning staff are now working later hours this has resulted in the service declining with longer waits and a dour atmosphere. I wish these changes had t occurred so we could keep G Cafe as our daily coffee stop. We'll now have to try another option in the area. Too bad. read more

Spent $25 on avocado toast and a latte. Took one bite if the toast and it tasted very lemony. Looked closer and found the remnants of THREE lemon slices in one piece of toast. Like instead of just squeezing lemon juice into the avocado, they threw whole lemon slices into it. So gross, such a waste of money. East rock coffee is a much better option. read more

Review: WARNING: A Deeply Disheartening Experience I recently visited G-Cafe on Orange Street with a colleague, hoping to find a comfortable and welcoming environment to work in for 1-2 hours when we have some fun. We chose two tables side by side, allowing us both to have enough space to spread out our work materials. After about an hour, despite there being many other tables occupied by a single person, the owner approached us and asked us to sit on opposite sides of one table. We politely declined, explaining that we specifically needed to sit side by side to share the screens of our two laptops and that if this wasn't the case, we would do what he asked. We even cleared out the other side of the table, so seats were free and people could sit there if they needed a place to sit. Sadly and shockingly, the owner persisted, demanding once again that we move to one table. We explained to him that we needed to sit side by side a little bit longer. However, he rudely insisted that it was none of his concern and that he had the power to force us to do what he wanted. This insistence, despite the many other single-occupant tables, made us feel singled out and deeply humiliated. It made us very uncomfortable, as we couldn't understand why he kept coming back to only us. Regardless, there were many other seats available inside, and it was a nice spring day with multiple tables free outside, and I guess many people simply did not want to sit. Seems recently the ownership has changed. We have been regular customers at this place for the last two years, visiting every weekend. We always order a fresh set of coffee if we stay for more than two hours. While their coffee is nothing special and often of low quality, what makes this place attractive is the ability for students to sit and work. However, this recent experience has left us feeling very distressed and ruining our weekend. I told the manager that I would reflect this concern as a review, and he started following me outside the coffee shop on the street, insisting that I should not write any review. If my colleague hadn't come to protect me, I am not sure how far he would have followed me. I wanted to share this to warn others about the disrespectful behavior from the owner, especially students and perhaps more so international students, as he seemed to target us specifically. It's disheartening how harassing the behavior of the owner was, and how he only picked on us and treated us poorly. read more

I love this place! Consistently delicious coffee (medium roast) and I enjoy their pastries, particularly their assortment of danishes. Recently tried a London Fog and it did not disappoint. Lots of people come to hunker down to work....but be aware there is not wifi!!! Great indoor and outdoor seating options. The one big drawback is that I found find the music to be disturbingly loud....kind of throws off the whole vibe!!! read more

Maybe the worst cafe in New Haven. Nothing to do with the staff and baristas. They don't price a few drops of oat milk at $1.50 or a small cappuccino at $7.50, how does that justify cost?
