There were packaged items,hot items and cold items as well. I ordered a honey lavender macchiato and it was absolutely delicious. They took my order and then called me when it was ready. I've been wanting to try this place for some time, but they're not on my radar because I rarely find myself downtown. Anyway, we bought the cake at full price, and my friend went to find forks for the group. She asked one of the employees behind the counter and he very rudely said, "Have you tried looking behind you?" So rude. Found this place on our way through New Haven on a road trip. After driving all day, we were excited for a snack. We like hot tea in the evening and saw they had a selection. The guy at the register was helpful and we picked out macrons to enjoy. Reason for lower stars-- It was 30 minutes before closing so we figured we could eat 2 cookies and finish our tea in that time without disturbing the staff. A young man came and told us to get up and leave the restaurant. He said we were not allowed to sit and eat our food close to closing time. I politely told him "It's 2 cookies, we won't make any mess and we will be out in 10 minutes. " He said "No exceptions, you have to leave." I have never heard of a restaurant that kicks people out 20 minutes before they close. We didn't know the area so we tried to walk to the park down the street to finish our cookies and tea. It was full of homeless people and a woman stopped us and told us it's not safe at night to be there. The cops were arresting people on the other side of the street. We ended up having to go sit and finish our treats in our car. Pretty disappointing they couldn't let us sit after spending $30. Some of the macrons were good. The tea was nice. Close at 8 pm or hire new staff that knows how to treat customers. Went back in the next morning because we were passing by and told the manager (before writing this review). She looked at me like I was speaking a gibberish and defended the employee "well, they were closing..." So now I know why the staff is ignorant. They have no management. What kind of business kicks people out 20-30 mins before close and makes them proceed to a potentially dangerous environment to finish the food they paid for? No one told us BEFORE we ordered. Tous Les Jours is quite a sweet place, with a tempting lineup of breads, croissants, cakes, cookies, sweet pastries with fruits and chocolate, savory pastries with cheese, sausage or hot dogs, hot and cold sandwiches and a ton more. You walk down the line "Subway" style and use a pair of tongs and a tray to select what you want. Tous Les Jour is one of my favorite bakery chains and I first discovered the franchise in Michigan. I've been to several locations in Michigan and one location in Philadelphia but this Downtown New Haven location is unfortunately my least favorite. I've been to this location a few times now and the majority of the time the pastries taste like they've been sitting out for some time and not that fresh. At other locations if you stop by early enough you can catch them pulling items out of oven and steaming hot, however, no matter what time I show up to this location the desserts always taste the same and the experience feels a bit underwhelming. The selection here is also considerably limited compared to other Tous Les Jour locations. I really love the red bean donut and plain twist donuts here so I'll probably continue to go to this location if I don't find another one near Downtown New Haven. If you're not familiar with Tous Les Jour then this place is a solid cafe with free wifi, ample seating and friendly staff. It's usually quiet which also makes it a perfect place to get work done. A classic, and glad that there's one of these in New Haven. The quality is actually quite good on my visit compared to the ones in used to in the city. The open face hot dog roll hit all the marks I was looking for with a crispy bread. Yuzu pie was quite airy and had a subtle sweet and brightness to it. I was very excited to try this place after finding them on Instagram and following them for months now. The cakes always look so delicious and soft. Last weekend I took the bus down there around 2:00 p.m. I was surprised to see that a lot of the pastries were gone already. However, I know this happens a lot with good bakeries. I asked the workers about this and they stated sometimes the bakes are gone before 2:00/3:00 p.m. depending on what day you come. I got a slice of the cloud cake and the strawberry cream cake. I was most interested in these because I might get a whole cake for my birthday. I cant express enough how soft these cakes were and how they just melted in my mouth. Both were so delicious and came with fruit in the middle. I would even know which to choose for my birthday. I would definitely buy these cakes again. The café is very long; the baked goods line the left side And tables line the right side. I really like this style of café because you take a tray and serve your self. I came to tour Les jour for a pick me up on a rough day and it exceeded my expectations. This girl with glasses took my order and she was so sweet! The store was packed but she still took my order efficiently while making small talk. Several of the pastries I wanted to try had not been replenished yet. Tous Les Jours is basically a pastry buffet which is totally my jam. My absolute favorite was the Taro Sweet Cream bread. This bread grabbed my attention because it was purple which is my favorite color. The bread was so fluffy and light and the cream inside (also purple) was really good. While purple pastries may not exactly sound appetizing I was quite surprised. Several of the offerings has a similar consistency. If your able to control yourself and buy one item with a similar look You will be able to try more and save on the overall cost. Very happy to see an Asian bakery finally opening in New Haven. Definitely gives me a place to feel a little at home. The store front isnt very impressive but it definately blended in with neighboring buildings. Once you're inside it is very modern. The shop is very long. They have a good amount of seating that would be nice for hanging out and studying. Prices are about average for this chain. I did notice that some of the savory pastries were overdone and burnt. The hot dog bread was unevenly made and disappointing looking. I love the Korean donuts but they were also uneven in shape and the sugar was unevenly applied. I have been to numerous other Tous Les Jours and I know they can make the pastries more uniform looking. As soon as we walked in, we were almost overwhelmed (but in a good way) by how many treats there were to pick from! Everything that we picked out was high-quality and literally perfect.
