I happened upon Sweet Mary's Bakery when I was walking to my car. I was surprised to find a New Haven Bakery I hadn't heard of. So I visited. Sweet Mary's is lovely inside. I noticed a reference to the fact that they have cooking classes. There were two to three people working. Two people, perhaps the owners, seemed like they were training a third person. In any event, everyone was very nice and helpful. In terms of baked goods, the most visible things were two glass cases of many cupcake flavors. I also noticed some cookies. I should note that when I visited, the colleges were on break. I'm not sure if they have more options when the colleges are in session. The cupcakes looked outstanding. Well iced. Nice colors. I ordered a lemon cupcake, and a chocolate peanut butter cupcake. I had parts of both. The cake was very fresh. The peanut butter icing was delicious. The lemon icing/curd was delicious too. My only other comment is that certain parts of the yellow lemon cake were a bit dry, but it wasn't noticeable when the bites contained icing. I'd definitely return to try more things. Sweet Mary's is sort of hidden away on court street in New Haven. A small unassuming storefront opens into a very nice shop fronted by displays of their cupcakes, cookies and other sweets. The cupcakes are up there among my favorites. There's always a good selection of flavors. I'm told by my family that the lemon bars are excellent (I don't like lemon bars.). I find it amazing that there is such a great selection of baked goods every day. That's a lot of work! On this particular visit I spoke at length with the owner about how she determines what to make each day and which flavor combinations sell best. I got 6 ($15, which I felt was good) and she packaged them really nicely so they looked like a gift. She was super helpful and friendly while I was picking them. We got our wedding cake and cupcakes from Sweet Mary's, so now every time I stop in, it's an extra special treat for me (and my husband because I'm always bringing him something home). I first discovered Sweet Mary's when I worked in downtown New Haven two years ago, and I recently started working in the area again. It's my go-to place for the occasional sweet treat. The cupcakes are delicious, and I think I've been able to try almost all of them. My husband really likes the cheesecake cupcakes (yellow cake with fruit filling and cream cheese frosting), and I like the buttercream frosted cupcakes best (the regular vanilla cupcakes are wonderful). We've also had a few different cookies and the 7-layer bar, and we've never been disappointed. Everything is quality and tastes like it was made with love. Sweet Mary's did an excellent job on our wedding cake and cupcakes. We got a small vanilla cake with blueberry filling and vanilla buttercream to cut, along with an assortment of party-sized cupcakes, including vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, blueberry cheesecake, and strawberry cake with vanilla buttercream. Everyone loved the cupcakes, and I was glad to have ordered a few too many so that we had leftovers to enjoy the next week. A cupcake I had here is in my top 3 favorite cupcakes of all time. And I've had a lot or cupcakes! I got the peanut butter cupcake and it was decadent to say the least. It was filled with delicious peanut butter and the cake even had peanut butter chips in it. So moist and yummy. I have had a few others but the peanut butter was the best. Sweet Mary's is phenomenal for so many reasons. The store is beautiful and is always spectacularly clean. The cupcakes are delicious and decorated to perfection. What I love about these cupcakes is that they are aesthetically beautiful but they don't have a bunch of crazy decorations like some other bakeries. First! Hey I don't really like cupcakes but I'd do this again. These things look intimidating with their big fancy icing, which always scares me since I can't stomach too much sweetness. First off, I'v tried a lot of cupcakes. A LOT OF CUPCAKES. I've done tour de cupcakes on bikes before to get to know cities. Last week I tried four cupcakes in one go and while I can't say that all of them were my favorite... The Death by Chocolate cupcake blows everything out of water, including the sum of all sugar and fat that I have consumed in my lifetime. Let me break it down for you: 1. The cake (4.0) I personally think that Sugar has a better cake than Sweet Mary's cakes. It's fluffier and has less substance than those I've tried at Sugar. Still, it's pretty solid and has the same consistency throughout the cake. 2. The frosting (5.0) The frosting took this baby home. It's lighter than most cupcake frostings, almost like a mousse. The sweetness of the cake is tempered by the less-sweet more-mouthfeel of the frosting. Reminds me raw creme that is used in Korean pastries. Very unique, very good, very much worth the price. 3. The accessories (5.0) The cupcake was lined with a chocolate ganache of sort. It made up for the cakiness of the cake. The mini chocolate chips garnish was cute. 4. The place (5.0) The interior is not-too-sterile clean. It's very... New York. White with Tiffany Blue accents. Open with no partitions to hide the kitchen. Glass casings. Despite the fact that I knew I was about to purchase a thousand calories in one go, I felt good the entire time I was committing the crime. And that's muy importante. Plus, there was the added bonus of rocky road cookie samples. Yum Yum Yummmm. Overall, rounded out to 5.0. Good job, Mary and co. Honestly i feel like i am not even worthy to write this review. This cupcakes are crafted to perfection with nothing but love and some minor side ingredients of course. Fluffy and moist what can you want other than that?? Nothing....... Except of course some cookies that are also amazing. This place is a little on the pricey side for sweets but well well well worth it. This is a great place to grab snacks for a gathering or grab your wife a cupcake at work so she wants to be your friend when you get home. Each of the four chocolate components subtly yet distinctly contributes to a balanced composition: the moist, light cake recalls the perfect chocolate cake that mom baked when you were a kid; the dark chocolate ganache filling tells your mouth that this not your mother's cupcake - it is a pocket of treasure that rewards without overpowering; the generous swirl of frosting serves as a the perfect foil to the cake and filling - not too sweet, very light, and decidedly less chocolaty than the base; the milk chocolate accents scattered across the frosting add a note of whimsy. We recently threw a surprise baby shower for one of our coworkers. We weren't 100% sure what she was craving at the time so we decided to go with cupcakes. I just happened to be in New Haven for a doctor's appointment and decided to give this place a try. I was definitely pleasantly surprised. There were so many flavors to chose from! Not just staples like chocolate, vanilla, red velvet but also fun flavors like nutella, cherry cheesecake and pina colada. You can make box mix cupcakes at home and they would be 5 times better. They had one of my favorites, macarons, and they were OK. Some of them were not filled properly. Two stars for the cute decor. Since the owner is so passive aggressive. Just saw that response and it's hilarious because it's definitely unnecessary. No you will not please everyone. Some people aren't easily impressed with lackluster baked goods for a price. One star because Yelp forces me to leave something. Pretty good cupcakes but I can think of 2 places off the top of my head that are better & more reasonably priced. The shop itself is small & the cupcakes are not marked. The lady working that day seemed annoyed when I asked her what was what. She was the only one there & it was pretty dead so I'm not sure why she wasn't more helpful. I really enjoyed the maple cupcake I tried & wouldn't deter anyone from going. If they stepped up in the customer service department I'd rate them higher. New town means new treats, and I'm on a mission to try them all out (with or without help from my husband). My sweet tooth knows no bounds, but it knows the qualities it wants - especially in it's cupcakes - and my excitement to taste Sweet Mary's was sadly damped upon first bite. I was greeted upon entering the small bakery - and although I didn't receive rude service, I could see how others might interpret it as such. The cupcakes are not individually labeled - there's apparently a chalkboard on the side with a list of the day's flavors, and you either guess/are psychic, or you ask and feel like an inconvenience. And the price list? Not by the products! It's on a shelf across from the displayed treats. She needs to label each item with a price to avoid all of these stupid inquiries. I walked out with four cupcakes to share with my family - pistachio, maple, pumpkin, and carrot. I cut them into pieces so that we could share - which revealed that the pistachio, maple, and pumpkin had fillings. The pumpkin in all honesty did not taste like pumpkin. Seriously, if the maple hadn't tasted so strongly, they looked the same, and initially I thought perhaps the pumpkin one was supposed to be the maple until I tried that cupcake. The cake was slightly moist, the pudding was cold and creamy, and the frosting was buttery in taste and whipped to an airy consistency - no pumpkin flavor in any component. The maple was very strongly maple overall - cake itself had light flavor and crumb, the pudding tasted more of maple, but it was the thick, sweeter frosting was where the majority of maple flavor came from. My brother and sister quite enjoyed this one...then again, they both have experience living in VT and making maple syrup, so they kind of go gaga for this flavor. I was most disappointed by the pistachio, to be honest, because I got it specifically for my dad - it's his favorite nut/flavor/he'll eat pistachios 'til he explodes. I should've hesitated when I saw the cupcake - pale neon green cake suggests artificial flavoring and not real pistachios. I was correct, the cake didn't seem to have a single real pistachio nut in it, just the flavoring. The pudding reminded me of the Jello brand variety, which made me suspect the previous puddings' origins as well. The frosting was the same buttery whipped type the pumpkin one had - and similar to the pumpkin, not much pistachio flavor, only the pudding had that slightly artificial pistachio flavor to give the cupcake it's name. The carrot cake, unfilled, was actually okay - teeny tiny pieces of nuts in the denser, moist cake, and thick, cream cheese frosting in that classic style, complete with teeny little carrot-shaped sugar decoration on top. To be honest, I can't say that I'll be back - although pretty, these are not my style of cupcakes. I'll go through the extra effort to make my own if I'm sharing cupcakes with people. read more

Amazing cupcakes but not such great service. The main issue is that they have no website. That combined with limited hours and staff that are pressed for time over the phone (so no time to list cupcake flavors) make it difficult to coordinate orders for events. Things to put on their website? Surprise days they are closed, order cutoff times that aren't written down anywhere, cupcake flavors, pre-payment required for all orders...hopefully they'll work out the kinks in the business because the cupcakes taste great. Cupcakes here look elaborate and all (and have thus become popular for people to trot out at events and such), but I genuinely can't say I like these better than ones you or I might make at home. I don't eat cupcakes that often, but when I do, I want the frosting to taste sweet - that's kind of the point. Therefore, I don't understand the whipped, barely sweet frosting they use. Lots of places sell cupcakes these days, and I'm getting the feeling that the trend has jumped the shark. They make some of the best cupcakes I ever had. But not all of them taste good, some of the cupcakes taste the worst I had. The hard forsting cupcakes taste nasty, but the whip creamed cupcakes taste the best. The cupcakes with whip creamed frosting on it are moist and the one with hard frosting are hard. So I would recommend getting whip creamed cupcakes and you would love this place. read more

I was running out of time to order my son's first birthday cake as my first Baker had fallen through. So I looked at photos of a lot of places that were on hulafrog's Milford Shelton page and I really liked the photos of Sweet Mary's stuff. I had never been and I didn't have a ton of time to go drive out to New Haven to try them as again it's my son's first birthday so that would have been difficult coming from Ansonia with him. I decided to give it a go and hope for the best. I was absolutely not disappointed with the look of the cake. I sent her a photo of what I wanted and it looked exactly like it.
