    Lion King Cake

Sarah made a gorgeous cake for my sister's Lion King baby shower. She answered endless questions from me and had great suggestions to help bring my dream to fruition. The raspberry and vanilla cake was a hit! It was beautiful and tasted amazing. I'm dairy free but had to sneak a tiny bite of it! When it came time to pick up the cake Sarah packaged the cake well and carried it to my car in the rain for me despite me saying I could carry it. She showed me the best way to store it while driving so it is safe and was clear on directions to keep the cake in perfect condition until it was time to eat it. This was a very positive experience. I really felt that Sarah cared about the baby shower (I even got to show her some of the decorations I put together). Everyone was raving about the cake from appearance to taste. It was definitely meant to be that I found this bakery and Sarah right before she was due to have a baby herself!

First of all, I'm thrilled that Branford has a bakery on Main Street again! I grew up with Castallons, which burned down years ago, and there's been a void ever since. I now live in San Francisco, but my dad is turning 80 tomorrow. Today was his big family party, and I needed a cake to wow the crowd. Sweets on Main did not disappoint! I called and asked if they could help me design the perfect chocolate cake. My dad could only have a little piece due to diet restrictions, and I wanted that little piece to be the best chocolate cake he ever had. The cake was not only absolutely gorgeous, but DELICIOUS!!!!! This was a stand out cake, and I've tried a lot of chocolate cakes, as I'm a wedding photographer. The whole family raved about the flavor, and everyone wanted an extra piece to take home across three states. They have a nice menu with lots of flavor options. The owner is a local girl, and very very nice to work with. I wish them many years of success and we'll be back for more birthday cakes.

The owners are so friendly and accommodating! They make delicious treats, I would highly suggest ordering from here for any special occasions or just because. One of the only places that I've seen make macarons, and they are delicious! I also had their personal sized Reese's Pie and my parents had the Key Lime Tarts, we where blown away by how tasty they where!!

Naked cake with vanilla buttercream and an assortment of seasonal flowers. On the inside: strawberries and pastry cream!

There is a reason why this business has 5 stars! Sweets on Main is absolutely amazing. For my mothers birthday I requested a naked cake with strawberries and pastry cream. Not only was the cake gorgeous but the pastry cream was the best pastry cream I've ever had in my life, seriously they should sell it by the cup (I'd pay whatever the shipping cost was from Branford to NYC). This place is going to be my go-to for all future celebrations. To top it all off, the service was friendly, fast, and accommodating. I knew I was in good hands from the moment my call was answered.

I've had food prepared by Nancy (the owner) before and always had my taste buds yearning for more, but last night I was able to step into the kitchen with her and take one of her informative, fun and very delicious cooking classes. I went with my team from work, and it was a great environment where once we all strapped on our Ginger & Pickles aprons, we were all able to "let our hair down" so to speak... We were greeted with a fabulous wine and cheese board, along with a phenomenal Brie baking away for us. We were given a menu of what we would all be cooking and enjoying that evening, pre chosen by our team leader. The menu was well planned, well written and not at all stuffy or overly complicated. Our "Valentines Day Date Night" menu included a wonderful beef tenderloin with a cream sauce, haricots verts with shallots and soufflés we made. So so so good! People work in teams on recipes and it really helps the evening flow. While 2 people are working with Nancy (and sometimes her assistant Brooke), the rest are taking in wine, Brie and observing some new techniques in the kitchen. Once one team is complete, The next team moves on to the next section of the menu. Before you know it, dinner is being played and served. Everything came out so well, it was as if we were dining out at your favorite restaurant. Nancy is able to answer all your questions and explain why things are done one way versus another, or give you ideas and tips on how to increase your own culinary skills at home. I will definitely be bringing friends here for some classes in the future.

Their Sanctuary Kitchen project bolsters another objective -- encouraging fairness and participation in the entrepreneurial aspects of food business. As I understand Sanctuary Kitchen, they offer fair wage employment opportunities in a food catering and grab and go type business to immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. I believe these people are encouraged to help expose people to world cuisines that are meaningful to them. You can order food for pickup at designated times. You can also buy the food at the Farmers Markets. I recently visited the Sunday City Seed Market at Edgewood Park near the Westville neighborhood of New Haven. There were a variety of foods. I grabbed a tasty hunmus and a box of the donut style falafel. Both good. But I was really intrigued by the Iraqi food offerings because I haven't knowingly had Iraqi food. I bought Iraqi Carrot and Dill rice, Iraqi Lentil Soup and Iraqi Vegetable Curry Soup. Since I'm not experienced in Iraqi cuisine, I can't speak to authenticity or make a comparative quality analysis. The food seemed nutrient rich. I'm not sure if this a cultural thing or the preference of the individual cook, I think the food needed a bit more salt across the board. Also, in terms of texture, the rice was good, but the soups seemed a bit overcooked and had a softer texture than I would expect. I was happy to have a chance to try these foods and I applaud the mission of City Seed. 4.25 Stars

We went for their first October seating, and this month's menu has such cozy fall dishes. The cod and filet were cooked perfectly! We had a front row seat to the open kitchen, and you could see how much care chef Danielle and her team put in to every dish. The timing of the courses flowed perfectly, and having it be capped at 40 people with a prix fixe menu made for a smooth experience. The flavors were spot on and there was this interesting popping texture to the dish.
