Alyssa's Cakery is something sweet in the heart of Wallingford on Center Street. Mainly a custom specialty cake shop, Alyssa is baking up ridiculously good cupcakes and brewing up cups of a local favorite coffee (Perkatory Roasters). We wondered into the shop on a Saturday. The hours are odd and short, so make sure to check online before making a trip. The shop has a lot of open space and a few seats to enjoy cupcakes and coffee. There was a case of large cupcakes with lots of flavors to choose from. From seasonal to classic flavors, all cupcakes were decorated nice with a garnish based on theme. There were even trays of mini sized versions of the cupcakes that you rarely see at other bakeries and specialty cake shops. The pieces weren't too bad either, the minis were $1.50 and the regular-sized ranged from $2.50 to $4.00. The regular cupcakes were categorized by classic, specialty, gourmet and supreme. While we were there, we were admiring custom cakes that were being picked up. We snatched up Alyssa's card and will remember her if we need a beautifully decorated cake. Back to the cupcakes... We tried the regular-sized Coffee Cake cupcake and Chocolate Caramel Pretzel cupcake. The coffee cake had a delicious cinnamon-y frosting, a cream cheese (I think) drizzle and topped with a piece of coffee cake. The cake was vanilla and had a ribbon of cinnamon. There was so much cinnamon, I loved it. The Chocolate Caramel cupcake was topped with vanilla frosting, pretzel pieces and caramel balls. It was a chocolate cake. The cupcakes were moist, airy and flavors were on point. I would love to try some of the others next time. What a fun night!! Went for a cake decorating class and my cake turned out beautiful! They were good at providing and showing instructions of what to do. The design looked complex initially but amazingly enough it really wasn't that difficult. I will definitely go again! They provide the cake and all of the supplies. You get a choice of funfetti, chocolate, vanilla or marble cake. You can bring you're own snacks and beverages. It was a great girls night out! I love to come here for the Cake night classes. At this time you can book a large party ( 10 people perhaps ?) and pay $50 per person for the materials and their instructions. We usually BYOB and brings a few snacks to enjoy while we decorate our cakes. They pre-cook the cylindrical cakes and you tell them ahead of time which flavor you want: funetti, vanilla, red velvet and chocolate are some of the options. They teach about frosting the 'crumb layer, how to bag your buttercream frosting in the plastic piping bags. How to smooth the frosting lines to make it sort of ombre in appearance. Depending on the cake you sign up for they show you how to make simple fondant characters. I'm probably not using the correct terminology but you get the idea. The work tables could be a little larger so you have more room to work and snack but that's really my only suggestion. read more

Tim and I spontaneously visited this bakery after seeing a group selling some items on the sidewalk for a Wallingford street event. I'm glad we went inside! They do some awesome mini cupcakes. The Mississippi mudpie and grasshopper were our favorites. The Samoa was ok, though it was mainly because of the 1/4 cookie on the top; the flavor didn't resonate otherwise. I really like Alyssa's Cakery (and I'm a big cake snob). I've only had their mini cupcakes so far but they have been consistently good. There is always a wide variety to choose from - obviously this depends on the time of day as there are fewer choices closer to closing time. It's a cute little place located in the center of town. There are a couple of tables - I believe they serve coffee too but I've never eaten in. They also sell a couple of other knick knacks (e.g. mugs). Each time I've been there, the staff have always been friendly and helpful. I can not say enough about Alyssa's Cakery!! We used her for my bridal shower and for my wedding. For the bridal shower, we had a beautiful pink bow cookie dough flavored cake. For my wedding, she did a beautiful simple white (with sparkles!) funfetti and Reeses peanut butter flavored cake with accompanied cupcakes with MULTIPLE flavors. Not only was the presentation gorgeous BUT the flavor was out of the world. Multiple guests continue to tell me how delicious Alyssa's cupcakes and cake were. I have gotten a total of 4 cakes from Alyssa. They have all been wonderful. However since her business has really picked up the customer service has gone down. Last year I ordered a cake with a dozen cupcakes when I went to pick up they forgot my cupcakes and I had to wait an hour for new ones. Thanks to Miss Madeleine, I was made aware of this new cupcake shop in town. How could I pass this up? Located right next to Vinny's deli, the space they occupy used to be a creepy looking antique store but the staff did quite a job making the shop feel bright and cheery. They offer two different price tiers for cupcakes--standard cupcakes are $2.50 each (all vanilla, all chocolate, black and white, white and black) or specialty cupcakes at $3.50 each. My sister, Lauren, went with a red velvet, I had a black and white and we brought a Samoas cupcake home for the hubby. So I noticed quite a Yelp buzz about this place recently considering it just opened about a month ago and I had to see what the fuss was about. Fuss be had, these are phenominal! Considering I took the day off from work for my birthday and didn't have plans until later, I figured why not take the 14 minute ride over there. Alyssa's is right next to a deli. I've seen this combination seem to work well for businesses, such as Sub Boss and Sugar in East Haven. I would have loved to try the vanilla squared, but that wasn't a flavor option today. I got a mix of 4 gourmet and 3 classic, came to a little over $14. Red Velvet, moist and that frosting? MMM! Carrot cake frosting was awesome, but the carrot cake itself needed more carrot and less spice. The Smores one was excellent, its marshmellow frosting was light. The Lemon Blueberry one was a great combo of flavors. Can't wait to go back and try more. Alyssa....you go girl! read more

I placed a custom order online through Alyssa's Cakery for a Boston cream cake. I needed the cake big enough for 10 people, and decorated with the designer brand Versace. Alyssa by far exceeded my expectations!! Not only did this cake look fabulous but it tasted amazing!! The cake size was perfect and we still had alittle left over. Often times you have a good looking cake and taste quite don't match up with the looks. Rarely do you have BOTH, a good looking Cakery and a great tasting item. We ordered the cupcake cake... it was so perfect I can't stop raving about our delight. The cupcakes were perfect in size. ONE cupcake would easily provide enough sugar takeoff blast power. I would even go as far as to say that the cupcakes were "big" very far from being dainty. We had our Cupcake cake look like a dinosaur... super cool. Very childlike imagery on the design which was cool with us. We ordered some extra cupcakes on the side. Everything was wow. As far as customer service goes, I didn't make the phone calls so I didn't do that part. My wife didn't have any gripes. I do know we placed the order for the cake 6 days prior from the day of the event. Ordered my daughter's wedding cake from Alyssa and was very disappointed. Went in to talk to her about it today. The cake was crumbly and the filling had very few strawberries. The "butter cream" frosting didn't taste buttery, it tasted sickeningly sweet and sugary. When I told her this, she asked if I'd had a tasting. When I said no, she said I should have because this is what their cakes are like. I had requested lavender sea shells on the cake, but everything was white. Very, very disappointed. read more
