If you are looking for something sweet, Mr. D's is the place to be. We were checking out the shops in the Wallingford Center and popped in to Mr. D's just to look. Well, we just HAD to get a few things. Mr. D's has candy, ice cream, cakes, chocolates, bubble tea and much more. We were sold on the cupcakes and they were so delicious. We got the Lemon Raspberry Cupcakes, Toffee Cupcake, I Love You Cupcake and Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake. These cupcakes were packed with flavor with fillings and candy baked in. The Lemon Raspberry Cupcake was a lemon cake with raspberry filling and a pipette of more raspberry. The Toffee Cupcake had toffee bits baked into the cake and topped with toffee and butterscotch drizzle. The I Love You Cupcake had cheesecake baked into a red velvet cake. The Pumpkin Cheesecake was my favorite, cheesecake baked into the cake, topped with cream cheese frosting. Oh, and the cheesecake had chocolate chips, yum! The staff was so friendly too. We asked about many of the cupcake flavors in their case since these weren't basic vanilla or chocolate. The shop is very spacious. There are tables and chairs to enjoy ice cream and other treats. Putting the idion "kid in a candy shop" literally. This shop located in the main square of the beautiful town of Wallingford is a great stop. Decorated like a traditional candy shop, I stopped in for an oreo cheesecake cupcake post-lunch. What a cute place! I stopped in here after a late lunch with a friend. There are few tables, but lots of yummy things to choose from. Cookies, cupcakes, coffees, ice cream, even gluton free options. We even saw the town's mayor stop in for some apple crisp. My friend got a giant chocolate chip cookie. And I grabbed a "cup of dirt and worms." Haha! A premade cup or chocolate and vanilla ice cream with chocolate chunchies and gummy worms. The staff, a couple of teenagers, we so sweet and helpful and great to talk to. A super adorable ice cream shop with a nostalgic feel to it. Old fashion candy and carousel horses, ceramic cupcake décor. It's all very relaxing, fun and inviting. A feel like a kid in a... Anyway. The moment you walk in, you can smell the sweetness in the air. What is great about Mr. D's is the variety of sweets doesn't take away from the quality of anything they offer. Want a bag of candy? Your bag has candies that are somewhat fresh and haven't been sitting there for 2 years. Want a milkshake? They'll make it right there with real ice cream and you'll hear the blender going rather than an automated machine. Cakes, cupcakes, cookies? Baked fresh in-house or recently. The only cons, and there aren't that many honestly, are the following: -You can get better cupcakes elsewhere for the price. The frosting can be too sweet at times and is lacking. -$5 card minimum. But that's business for you. -Depending on what time you walk in, you may be helped by a teenager from the local community or one of the bakers/owners. As expected, sometimes you'll get a little attitude from teenagers, but would you expect otherwise? At least they keep the workforce local. read more

Let me start by saying this review is not about the cake quality. Their cakes are moist and delicious. This is about the way they handled my wedding cake order. I placed an order over the summer for a small round vegan wedding cake, 11 dozen cupcakes and 1 dozen vegan cupcakes for an October 30th wedding date. I sent them reference photos of the cake. I wanted it to look like a birch tree stump with our initials inside of a heart...like when people carve their name on a tree...and edible fall leaves around the cake. The cup cakes I wanted them to decorate with fall color sanding sugar and a leaf on each one. I had to provide the edible leaves as they don't have the ability to provide that. I knew that before placing my order. The woman I ordered with was very courteous and pleasant. This is what I had issues with.. 1) after placing my order I was sent an invoice. The price was astronomical and my cake was on there twice at two different price points. Thank God my mom looked it over as the math was all wrong and I was over charged by almost $200. I emailed the baker back and she adjusted it, but how can you send a bride an invoice with out checking your math? 2) I went to pay off the last payment of my order. The bakery assistant and the cashier could not find my order. They said they would have the head baker call me the next day. That didn't happen. 3) I called two days later. The head baker said no one told her, but she was willing to take my payment over the phone. 4) Upon receiving my receipt/invoice that my cake order was paid...the date was wrong. No big deal...they adjusted it, but still nerve wracking. 5) The day of my wedding I was stressed. A few things went wrong, but over all great day. A complaint I had was my cake! Yes ... It looked like a birch stump, but the leaves they put on were atrocious! They didn't listen to me at all! They had them sticking straight up on the top of the cake. It looked terrible. In addition to this...the heart with initials...they did one correctly and then for some reason there was an additional one on the other side of the cake with what I can only assume was our last initials. It didn't make sense and I have no recollection of stating I wanted this. The cupcakes were not all done the way I requested. I did tell them that the fancier cupcakes could be left as is and to just place a leaf on them...that didn't happen. I'd say two out of 12 dozen had leaves. Like I said...great quality cakes... especially the vegan ones. Normally, vegan cakes can be dry, but these were moist and delicious. My issue is communication and follow through. They need to communicate more with their clients and each other. I was really really disappointed with the look of our cake. I'd recommend this bakery, but just know you will have to be one them like white on rice if you want your cake to be exactly what you requested. read more

I went there recently to get a cupcake for my birthday and I'll definitely be stopping in again. The staff was very friendly and the cupcake I got the s'mores cupcake. It was so good. It was basically s'mores but in the form in a cupcake. There was chocolate, a marshmallow, I even saw graham crackers on the cupcake for garnish. It was so good. Definitely going back there again. That was last year. This year I went there and got curbside pickup for my birthday, and got sone cupcakes for me and my family you know? I get home and they completely forgot one of the cupcakes! Come on guys. There's no excuse. I asked for 2 cannoli, 2 hummingbird, 1 coconut, 1 dirt and worm, 1 lemon, 1 k-9 and 1 peanut butter. I got all the cupcakes except for the coconut. Really guys? Really? I get that you may or may not be understaffed because of the virus but the least you could do is count once the cupcakes are boxed up to make sure each one is in the box. read more

I've only had Mr. D's treats about 3 times but that was enough to get the full experience. I don't hate the place because it's in such a great location and the bakery/ice cream shop is such a fantastic idea of locals. I just don't like it because of the quality of their treats. 1) Their bubble teas are gross. I've never had worse. I know it's a bakery though and not a milk tea store but at least make your drinks tolerable to drink! I highly recommend Kiwi Spoon and their bubble teas - it's about 1000% better than this place. 2) Every time I got a cupcake here, they seemed a little overpriced and they were bland/stale. I would hope that they tasted better after my first experience but it never got any better. Don't know how long they keep their cupcakes in the cooler for but it's obviously been too long. 3) Ice cream is pricey and is entirely not worth it. If you want good ice cream and good serving sizes, stop at Sweet Dream's about 4 minutes away. read more

So I have been on the hunt for a good place to snag cupcakes in the Connecticut area because I'm quite a cupcake lover and a baker of them myself. Sadly, this place did not help solve that issue. Not at all. The cupcakes so had was the Peanut Butter Filled (which isn't FILLED)! And the Lemon-Raspberry. They were okay, good even with a glass of milk for every bite because they were overly sweet on the frosting end and dry on the cake end. But eating it made me feel a bit like I'd misused the chance to eat some sweets. I also snagged some candy while there, jelly beans, and some of my flavors are really old stale and hard. Overall just a bit of a blah experience. The place was really cute and I would have had fun if my food was good, but a long wait line and then a blah cupcake left me a little bummed. read more

How can't you love the place? Right after a fantastic lunch or dinner at Half Moon this is a great spot to stop for exceptional dessert. Maybe Mr.D's was reading the yelp reviews who knows but more often then not whenever I visit the people behind the counter are great. I've only tried one cupcake from here and it was perfection. At the same token I was craving a cupcake for months soooo any cupcake may have satisfied me there... However the death by chocolate cupcake I had was pretty awesome. Chocolate cupcake, chocolate frosting, chocolate fudge sauce drizzled on top and even chocolate sauce in the cupcake! Yum! Currently I'm all about the dark chocolate espresso beans I find at Mr.D's. I think this place has been open a few weeks now, we were in the area trying to get some gelato next door and saw the PRALINE's logos on the window of this place next to our original destination and decided to check it out. I thought it was just going to be an ice cream shop and boy was i wrong .. this place is CRAZY. probably one of the larger candy stores i have ever seen in CT, and once you get past the candy they have bakery cases with cupcakes and once you get past the cupcakes, its an ice cream shop!! and then ... at the back of the stores its a TOY SHOP! Mr D's has is a little toy shop with and a bakery. Menu of the bakery includes Gluten free muffin, regular muffins, sandwiches, ice cream, and various beverages. They even have classic coke bottles in their mini fridge! Toys range from vintage to newer items. Similar to what you would find at a gift shift to a tourist spot. Parking in the front is limited, but there is a whole lot in the back and you can easily take the sidewalk or cut through the little alleyway between its neighboring stores. There is an outdoor seating area to eat you food outside or you can eat it inside. Prices are not Walmart worthy, but not Toys R Us range either. Food is average price for a bakery as well. Employees are very nice and willing to serve you with a smile. Great food- Great service I called at 11:30 on a Tuesday morning looking for four 6-inch ginger bread men for a gift. Mr. D told me that he could make them fresh for me, but to give him about 2 hours. This was my first visit to the bakery. I came in at 1:30 to pick up the gingerbread men and had to walk out with some treats for myself. I got a black and white cookie for a coworker (the cookie was HUGE!) and a chocolate peanut butter square for myself. Both were delicious. Later that night when we tried the ginger bread men, it was the best ginger bread cookie I ever had! It was soft and fluffy with such a great taste. We were very impressed. I got a chance to talk to the owner when I was in there and he gave me tips about the area, invited me to sign up for some of his classes, and really engaged in a nice conversation with me. I wanted to love Mr.D's SO BAD. I have been craving a cupcake for a months so finally my cupcake loving friends and I picked up a half dozen. I got the honeydew bubble tea and grilled cheese as well. The grilled cheese was very good. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The bubble tea was well, disgusting. I had like three sips and that was the end of it. The cupcakes- less than unimpressed. I tried a piece of the salted caramel, Boston creme, and nutella. All three were very dry. The frosting def tasted like it came out of a betty crocker can. And the nutella was 75% filling, 25% cake. We have a few more we are going to taste test later, so I will update my review, however so far everything has been disappointing! Too bad because they are only ten min. from my house! ****EDIT ON REVIEW- I had to drop this to one star. Later last night, I bit into a salted caramel cupcake and broke my tooth.
