This place makes me wish I were 9 years old again. Because that was when I went to a dentist near Wallingford downtown and my mom would always take us to the candy store afterward. (Ironic, I know, but totally awesome.) Not sure what candy store that was or if it still exists, but I wish Mr. D's was around so I could choose from candy, delicious cupcakes and ice cream - and look at toys. Today I'm way past that age, but Mr. D's is one of my new favorite places to stop in. The cupcakes I've tried so far have been excellent - the chocolate salted caramel one is my favorite, with hummingbird coming in a close second - and they're reasonably priced, just around $2 depending on the cupcake. They also sell Praline's ice cream, which you can just count on to be good, and there are lots of drinks, including bubble tea, that I have yet to try. The extensive drink and dessert menu just makes me want to come back. It sometimes gets crowded, but it's a very fun atmosphere. read more

My whole life, I have lived around the corner from Mr. D's, and I go there almost every week with my friends and family. Never in my life have I had a bad experience at this shop. The workers are always friendly and helpful. They have new ice cream flavors every season, which are always delicious and unique. Their cupcakes are, in my opinion, in the top five cupcakes in New Haven County. They also have a selection offering every type of candy you could every imagine. I LOVE that we have this little place right in our back yard. The walls of candy bins bring out the kid in me every time. The shelves filled with "retro" toys probably contributes to that as well. The cupcakes are amazing and always fresh. The wife loves the Cannoli and the Black Bottom, and I love the Carrot Cake. The selection is huge, and I can't wait to try more. Great little shop that has the feel of Disney's Main Street USA without the cheesiness and inflated prices. Mr. D has combined a per-pound variety candy store (try the chocolate peanut butter malt balls) a gourmet cupcake store, ice cream shoppe and classic toy store. The atmosphere is fun and the counters are well staffed; traffic moves even during the post-dinner rush. Prices are reasonable and the selection is outstanding. I was looking to get some ice cream and trying to choose between 15 or so flavors....and realized I was looking at the cupcake flavors. The candy selection includes new favorites and old classics. The store is quite large and you don't feel cramped or crowded as you browse. They could use a few more tables in there, though. Once a loyal customer to Wentworth Ice Cream, I've now been displaced to Mr. D's for my ice cream fix. While I still prefer the ice cream that Wentworth made, Mr. D's has some good flavors to offer. They sell Praline's Ice Cream, which is another good ice cream place in town. However, ice cream is not the main selling point at Mr. D's, but rather the various baked treats and other sweets they feature. Their cupcakes are famous. Literally. They were featured in a piece in People magazine in 2011. They also sell any candy you desire. Stuff I haven't seen in years. They also have a whole section of chocolate covered sweets. The gummy bears and almonds are occasional treats for me. Overall a good place to satisfy a sweet tooth. read more

Mr. D's definitely has its ups and downs. To me, it really depends on who's working there. I've gone during the day, and I wasn't impressed by the customer service I received. However, the young adults who work at night are truly exceptional. Even when the traffic in the building was building up, they remained smiling and helpful. In regards to the food, I've never tried their savory options, but I am always impressed by the sweets. I don't eat the ice cream here, but I have tried the cupcakes. Sometimes, they are slightly dry. My favorite cupcakes are definitely red velvet and the coffee oreo, but I also like the mint one as well. The assortments of candy and toys here is awesome! People gave good reviews for the cupcakes...I like that the cake part has a "homemade" taste to it, but the frosting is WAY too sweet for me. I've only been here twice so I may not the most reliable review here. I walked in and my first impression was that this place is pretty neat. It carries a lot of old school candy and chocolate (Gummy cola bottles, jawbreakers, sour ribbons, chocolate covered gummy bears, etc) However, it's expensive! If I remember correctly, it was like $9.99/lb! Now, for the cupcakes, the cake part is very good. They are dense and moist, which is how I like them. However, the frosting was way too sweet for me. I ended up ditching the frosting and just eating the cake. Not a fan of that. For a little cupcake, it was a bit over $2. They also have ice cream, smoothies, and bubble teas here. This place has seating and wifi. It's a bummer that I wasn't crazy about the frosting because I really thought the people working here were extremely nice. I was very disappointed with the serving. I ordered 5 different ice cream cups. The ice cream was very good but they are definitely not full size servings. The medium sundae was barley 3/4 full in the cup which included three toppings, hot fudge, strawberries and whip cream. When the whip cream doesn't at least touch the inside of the cover, it's obvious that these are not properly filled. I hope this gets addressed. read more

I've been here several times and each experience was great! When I first walked in I didn't know where to look! Candy in bins, Candy in stacks, Praline's ice cream, toys, cupcakes and more. I wandered around a bit, looking, then made my way to the counter. I was hungry so I went for a toasted cheese sandwich with bacon and tomato slices. The friendly girl behind the counter made it in a panini press-it was big, gooey and yummy-it smelled so good I ate it in the car but I could only finish half.. While that was happening I checked out the cupcakes. I asked the pretty woman at the case if there was a "Mrs D" she replied "that's me". Always heard great things about this place. Decided to place an order for a gluten free cake, for a special day. Unfortunately, when I arrived on the day to pick it up, the lady who took my order over the phone completely ignored the fact that it was supposed to be a gluten free cake. Now I'm completely cake less for my mothers birthday surprise gathering. I came in with my husband this Sunday afternoon, got 3 cupcakes. We tried the Confetti cupcake, coconut cupcake and the vanilla cupcake. They looked so delicious in the glass case I wanted to take a bite out of them all lol. Anyways, I bit into the confetti one first and wow, I was immediately so disappointed it was SO dry and lacking flavor! You can tell a cupcake is dry when you bite into it and it starts to crumble apart. I didn't finish it, nor did my husband as he thought the boxed funfetti cupcakes we can make at home were better and moist! On to the other 3, same thing!! All extremely dry! Mr. D's catered the dessert (cupcake towers) for our wedding at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, CT in October 25th and we couldn't be more pleased with their product, service, presentation, and all around awesomeness! From day one that we worked with Anne at Mr. D's we so pleased with her and knew we were in for a treat - figuratively and quite literally with her delicious cupcakes. She gave us an impromptu tasting since we had originally just planned to drop by the store for pricing and she insisted that we try the cakes and fillings before we committed to working with her. I remember saying to her the day we met that I not only loved the taste of her cupcakes, but I felt that she was a genuine person who would treat our wedding day as if it were her own, and I was right on the money! I can go on and on about how great the cupcakes tasted, I honestly haven't tasted cupcakes or any cake for that matter, as good as hers. That aside, the presentation was perfect. We added an 8 inch round at the top of the cupcake tower so we had a cake to cut which was also beautiful and delicious. I sent Anne a Pinterest of decorations and styling we wanted and she was not only able to reproduce them but improve upon them with her skill and creativity. There are so many different vendors to consider when planning a wedding, but we got lucky early on with Anne and Mr. D's. We found her, loved her, and couldn't be happier with the result. Our friends and family at the wedding raved about her cupcakes, which is evidenced by the fact that they devoured them in minutes! Mr. D's is awesome - we actually ordered our wedding cupcakes from them and they were fabulous. Everyone loved them, and they even made special order flavors just for us. Anne was awesome, and very easy to work with. Love having this little shop in the neighborhood! Their cupcakes are amazing, not too dense and just the right amount of frosting. I can highly recommend the salted caramel and the chocolate peanut butter, the lemon too, yummm! They have tons of candy to buy by the pound and have found some really unusual types. Their ice cream is good, I believe they sell Pralines and always feature a seasonal flavor, they also make amazing ice cream sandwiches with their homemade cookies. First of do not order the tapioca pearls with any tea. It's not that they are poorly cooked boba, it's that it's not traditional good boba. 10/10 would not recommend the boba/bubble tea. This place is OUTSTANDING! We stopped in to check out the place after having had lunch next door. We were very pleasantly surprised. Nostalgic candy galore. The cupcake counter caught my eye next. And these cupcakes are SO much better than Crumbs (NYC, Stamford, Wpt), Sugar (East Haven), and Sugarbelle (Glastonbury.) (Yes, I like cupcakes.) We highly recommended the PB Chocolate, Cannoli, and the Chocolate Salted Caramel. Now we can't wait to go back and try the rest. (Red Velvet, Hummingbird, Oreo, Coconut, Toffee Crunch, just to name a few.) We ordered a cake for my daughter's baby shower. It was a regular cake, not an ice cream cake. Enough for 25 people. The cake itself was dry, and burnt! The filling and icing was so sweet it made my teeth hurt just to eat it. I also ordered it a week ahead of time and they had 'just finished it' 5 minutes before my pick up time. I have not had any other items from this establishment before, but I will definitely NOT be ordering a cake there. For over $120 I was expecting something more. Ugh. read more

Bubble tea bubbles are all stuck together and the drinks in general are not good (coffees, teas,etc.) the young girls making the drink seriously need a real lesson from Starbucks. Mr. D's is pretty cool. They have a good selection of cupcakes, which I would recommend. I had the marshmallow cream filled cupcake. Delicious!! The frosting is very sweet on their regular cupcakes, but the marshmallow one was awesome, because it wasn't sugar overload. Their cookie dough ice cream isn't the most awesome cookie dough ice cream I've ever had (and contains lots of ice chunks) but their other ice creams are good. I love their caramel! It's to die for!! Yummy cupcakes! Plus they are the only place I can get bulk Jelly belly jelly beans by individual flavor. The parking sucks, though, so you may have to park behind the building and walk up through the alley. The prices are kind of high, but not so bad if you keep it to an occasional treat.
