Kouign (pronounced queen) is probably my favorite bakery here in CT other than Sift. They're open only on weekends and you better get there when they open or good luck. I've been many many times now so I can't remember all I've gotten but these are the ones I can recall: Chocolate chip cookie, brownie, brookie, ham and cheese croissant, brown sugar apple danish. Once again I made the 17+ mile drive to this bakery on the weekend and joined the line waiting for its doors to open. Once again I had difficulty choosing a breakfast pastry because all looked so mouth watering. This time I settled on a pair of blueberry buns that proved to be larger than expected so on returning home my wife and I decided to share one and save the other for the following day. Unfortunately the outside of the bun was too dense and flavor lite though the much smaller, interior part, was as delicious as expected. I will no doubt be returning in the not too distant future to sample more of their delicious pastries as should you. read more

Kouign is simply an incredible gem of a bakery. Everything's made fresh and they use in season produce and constantly have new items. If you want to try things you really need to go there early, as they often sell out by 11 or 12. The shop itself is adorable and the pastries are gorgeous. One of my all time favorite items is a Kouign-amann and they do these really really well. If you haven't tried one it's like a buttery croissant kinda dough with sugar that caramelized when it's baked. It's a rich decadent item that's a must try if you go here. read more

The hype is real! Kouign (pronounced Queen) is one of the best bakeries in the state and if you're driving in Wallingford you might miss it unless you are looking for a long line of people waiting every weekend (rain or shine) for Kouign to open. Their pastries are those that people travel too and during a recent visit (I was surprised that they still had baked goods left at almost 10am) I could see why. I ended up getting something sweet and savory and both were a meal in themselves - the ham and cheese croissant was flaky perfection and once back home I heated it a little to allow that gooey cheese to melt through. My sweet option was a cherry cinnamon roll (the exact name escapes me at the moment) and was all I could do not to scarf it down as soon as I got to my car. I saved half of it for the next day and dare I say it was a bit better. Regardless - i usually share my baked treats but these were hard to let go of. Be sure to check their socials as their menu changes weekly. So, head over there early - they are small batches and once they sell out, that's it. This little hidden gem has the most amazing cookies , pastry's and stuffed croissants. I absolutely love love their chocolate chip cookies and salted brownies. I also have tried a variety of of muffins one favorite was the fresh raspberry one and the ham and Gouda stuffed croissant was crisp but tender so good . But definitely get there shortly after they open because they literally sell out fast .. I've also tried the mini pies this summer had a yummy peach crumb . My granddaughters loved the snickerdoodle cookies they are very large . The are a cute small little place with big flavors. They also have a few tables outside as well. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable about the products. I was so bummed I actually went on my birthday to treat myself to a chocolate chunk cookie and brownie to find them on vacation lol it was just my luck that day . We've tried their vegan cinnamon roll and gluten free cinnamon roll cake, both of which you wouldn't even guess. No lack in flavor, moisture or weird textures. This was my best find of 2024-2025 the bakery delicacies coming out of this storefront are unparalleled! My personal favs are the croissants in any flavor combo they are what I imagine Paris tastes like. The line forms at 7:45 on the sidewalk for their 8am opening on the weekends and they sell out in 2 hours for the day. The menu changes weekly and is posted on socials. The cookies are good, the quiche good too, really anything here is great. A cute little place with friendly, helpful people. I was there at 930 and most of their product, particularly the cakes and cookies were already sold. I found their offerings interesting and inventive but I wasn't blown away. I like that the pastries are properly baked so they are darker and more crisp than most places. The guava one was good, but very messy as there were square, white chunks of filling mixed with the guava preserves so they were loose and fell out when I bit into it. The Cinnabon style bun was completely cooked through, which I appreciate since the actual Cinnabons tend to be doughy inside. These ones are glazed with a bit of icing instead of cream cheese frosting; I enjoyed it, but I would have liked a little more. The chocolate croissant was generously filled with a good, dark chocolate, just the right amount, just loose enough to coat the inside. I didn't taste any orange in the orange poppy muffin and I'm not a fan of strusel topping on a muffin, as I like muffin tops. All in all not bad, I will give it another try if next time I have a weekend day off. read more

Some of the things that I miss about living in a larger city are the small, baker-owned patisseries/bakeries, so I'm so happy to have heard of Kouign Bakery from other yelpers! The pastries are so artistic and delicious! I love how the selections change every weekend and the ingredients are super seasonal. Some of my favorites are the variety of almond croissants (so perfectly flaky!) and any of the quiches (the crust!!) The cafe itself is very cozy too. If not for the distance from New Haven, I could definitely see myself studying here or taking a leisurely brunch to catch up with friends. Every time I've stopped by there have been a few groups ahead of me waiting to order, and many options tend to be sold out by late morning. But the pastries are definitely worth waiting in line for! One of Wallingford's finest gems, Kouign Bakery (pronounced like Queen) is rising up the best danishes, croissants, cookies, scones, muffins, pies and of course the namesake, Kouign Amann. Kouign is open on Friday-Sunday from 8am to sold out. The weekly menu will drop on Kouign's Facebook/Instagram page and there are a few slots of pre-orders. They also have special holiday menus to pre-order for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter. Best to be there before opening because a line will form before the doors open and to ensure the goodies you hope to grab are available. I have had Kouign's pastries and scones at local coffee shops in the area like Green Kettle Coffee and Crossroads all the time. I've always loved them (especially the Quince, Honey & Brie Danish) so I hoped to visit the bakery one day. That day finally came and I set my alarm on a Saturday morning. I live about 10-15min from the shop. I was hoping to snag the Brown Sugar Thai Danish. I also got a Cheesy French Onion Danish, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Blueberry Sugar Cookie and a Kouign Amann since I've never had one before. I loved my brown sugar Thai tea danish, outside was flaky, ultra buttery, center had a strong and sweetened Thai tea taste and a lightly torched meringue. There was a brown sugar like caramel in the center that was ooey and gooey. The cookies had a nice crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. The chocolate chip cookie was more like a chocolate chunk cookie. The kouign amann was so good and highly recommend picking one up. It was so buttery and reminded me of a dense croissant. Kouign Bakery is a must try, but you have to plan ahead. Even though there is a line, the staff gets the line through quickly, especially if you have a list of things you are planning to get. We went this morning on a recommendation and it happened to also be their first year anniversary! How we only discovered this treasure today I have no idea. It is in a plaza with plenty of parking and have some outside little tables for eating. We were advised to go early since they typically sell out prior to closing. Good thing we did because we saw them post that they were sold out by 11am! No shocking after seeing the line that formed (luckily after we ordered)! Going in we were met with counter seating and the first bakery case. They tastefully decorated for their celebration and it truly enhanced our joy on being there. My husband and I were worse than kids. No decisions were made...we got all that we wanted. We have no regrets. Sue to their anniversary they included a glitter covered cake piece which just added to our glee. We went outside to eat our spoils. Oh man...we were blown away. The croissants were some of the BEST we've had. The almond croissant was my go to and my husband got a ham and cheese. Both were incredible. I am deeply embarrassed that I have not yet written a review of Kouign; even living 900 miles away, I dream of her scones and pb&j cookie on a daily basis and talk about this bakery/share her posts on socials almost as much. Kouign is my ideal bakery. It's small, meaning you get one-on-one service and actual facetime with Chelsea and her staff. It's locally sourced, meaning you can ask what the ingredients are or ask for dairy-free or vegan, and you don't have to wait for a generic response from Headquarters to find out, AND this also means you're supporting other local businesses (hello, Crossroads!) when you're shopping here or vice versa. Best of all - it's absolutely delicious. She is open for about 45 minutes each week (ok, that's just what it feels like) and sells out early almost every day. If you want something particular, you need to show up when she opens and stand in line with the other returning customers. Did you have your heart set on that delectable pastry from last week? Well, tough schnookies, because she probably changed up the menu and rotated something else in. Do you love figs? OH WELL they're out of season, now you're going to love something else for the next few months until figs are ready again. She's always keeping us on our toes. I've brought/sent people into Kouign who are picky eaters and they walk out with a large box full of goodies. My personal favorites? The chai scone and the peanut butter & jelly sandwich cookie -- yes, two peanut butter cookies with literal peanut butter and jelly spread. I recently visited Kouign Bakery. It's fairly close to Route 15 in Wallingford. That's about a 30 minute drive from my house. The shop was cute. They had a wide selection of baked goods including croissants, cookies, and brownies. Everything we tried tasted and looked good, and had the proper texture. Let me tell you, I'm much happier going to this plaza to stop in Kouign than when it was an Enterprise! :) I kept seeing Kouign's posts on Instagram and was excited when I had the chance to go (been twice now). This is a perfect (and adorable) spot to pick up some tasty treats for yourself (or to share, if you must!) The menu changes each week which makes it fun to go different weekends since you can try new items. First time I went there were a few people in line ahead of me so I had plenty of time to scope out all the treats. I will say the placement of the second display case is a little tougher to see because people tend to be right in front of it. I had to keep sneaking around the people ahead of me in line to see what everything was. Some friends were helping me do some stuff at my house so I picked up a mix of items - a kouign amman, cinnamon bun, cubano-ish, chai muffin, chocolate muffin and a few other items I forgot about. Everything is really top notch here - and every time I see a new instagram post I drool. All the treats are soft and warm. I had never heard of kouign amman before this bakery opened and it's so good - a light muffin-shaped croissant with a cinnamon/sugar flavor. There's nothing I've tried here that I wouldn't recommend. I hope this place flourishes because I love the concept and I love an independent bakery that cares about its products and its customers! As I was browsing through this small bakery the owners father waited on me, and was very helpful in describing some of the their unique bake goods. Not only were the items fresh but they were still warm from just coming out of the oven. I ordered a pear almond croissant that was huge, and loaded with almonds, it was absolutely delicious. I also ordered a cinnamon roll that went so good with my morning coffee.These delicious items aren't just good, they are to die for. This place is a guilty pleasure for me. It's basically the only reason I every wake up early on the weekends. If you show up here too late, get in line and hope for the best! Service is always excellent. I don't need to go into all of the great things that Kouign makes, but I will highlight a single pastry that I think they do better than almost everyone else: the humble ham and cheese croissant. The cases were full and they were still bringing more freshly baked pastries about of the back. Browsing on Yelp while staying nearby, I saw the listing for Kouign Bakery and saw that they had almond croissants, which is one of our favorites. We arrived just a few minutes after they opened for the day, and found Bistro-style seating outside and not much seating to speak of inside; two tables available in back and a couple seats in the front plus some bar type seating that didn't have a lot of surface available to set your food and drink. But they did have almond croissants! They were large, covered in almonds and bursting with delicious filling. Eating them at our table in back resulted in almond shrapnel all over the table, but they were definitely worth it. They had homemade oatmeal pies that looked great and put Little Debbie of our childhood to shame. We took one of those to go and it was sweet, cinnamony, and tasty. We also bought an apple tart of some sort, which was also very good. And lastly, after asking the gentlemen there what a Kouign was (their namesake pastry), we ordered one of those. He explained that it takes days of layering butter and sugar, similar to puff pastry. Then it's slowly baked until the sugar caramelizes and the butter expands the dough, resulting in its layered structure. We ate this one the next day and it was rich and delicate, and reminded me slightly of popovers my mom used to make when I was younger. The prices were between $4.50-5.50 for everything I considered ordering. I was thinking about having a coffee if they had a coffee bar though they did not but had coffee in thermal containers. I'm giving five stars, anticipating great products from here. It will update after sampling some goods. I will be very soon indeed! I only today (10/26/21) learned of this business from a news article on the front page of my local newspaper, the Meriden Record-Journal, which is where the posted photos are from. The owner states in the article that she's aware of all the great bakeries in town, and so will be offering different sorts of baked goods to compete, and not duplicate what's already available in town. She went on to say she'll offer different things, and those items that her customers like will be permanent while she offers new things to try. This bakery favors quality over quantity so get there early!! Despite a 2 pm closing, the past couple weeks I have seen them post they are sold out by noon! You will not be disappointed if you visit. Since it was my first time, I purchased several different things. A quiche, a cinnamon roll, a piece of caramel banana cream pie, a chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate almond croissant, a chocolate croissant and a blueberry citrus scone for my family to sample. Since we couldn't eat them all in one day, I made sure to individually wrap them for freshness. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the bacon cheddar onion quiche. The crust was excellent! When I got there at about 10 am, it appeared there were no chocolate croissants. I was told they would be coming out of the oven momentarily. When they did, the baker came out of the back and told me to keep the bag open in the car so the steam could escape and not soften the croissant. That is someone who truly cares about the product he puts out! My husband said it was one of the best chocolate croissants he has ever had! The blueberry scone with a citrus glaze was fantastic. 2 days later it was still moist and tender. There were full, fresh blueberries inside it and you could see the fresh citrus rind in the glaze. It was the perfect texture too. The chocolate chip cookie was good with high quality chocolate. My daughter loved the chocolate almond croissant. I am a banana cream pie lover and this one did not disappoint. The only thing that would have made it better was if the graham cracker crust was crisp, but I am sure that was a victim of refrigeration. I'd still buy it again. It was delicious. The only thing I didn't love was the cinnamon roll. It was kind of bland and doughy. 6 out of 7 items were phenomenal and I'd say that is pretty amazing! The bakery is only open on weekends and the offerings change weekly (there are some standard items, but it appears the flavors of things such as the whoopie pies, croissants, and scones change weekly. Kouign bakery is amazing. The smells are incredible and the pastries are decedent and yummy as heck. My daughter is in love with croissants and the one we had this morning is one of her all time favorites. We had a Kouign (pronounced queen) Amann a crunchy buttery little number that feels like the most perfect coffee partner I've never tried. We also got a morning cinnamon roll that was a little like the epic ebioche from sift bake shop in mystic. We also got a chocolate almond croissant which was super tasty and a brown sugar chai scone, which may have been the best offering we had. We got a black and white cookie for our son who doesn't usually get down on pastries and we all liked taking a bite of that, it had that softness but also a small crunch of a well done black and white. We will most certainly be back for more weekend morning breakfast action. If you like French baked goods, heck if you like delicious carbs this is a must try. read more

I confess, arriving at a bakery at 8:05am on a Sunday morning and finding a line out the door is both intimidating and exciting. But that is what happens when world-class baked goods await! I decided to get one of a bunch of things so that we could all sample a wide variety. We were in 100% agreement that the cinnamon roll and the Kouign Amman absolutely outstanding. Important tips: this place closes when it sells out. I find this both refreshing and a bummer. It's great because you are guaranteed fresh product. It is frustrating because you can't count on them being open during their posted hours. The staff in the shop is so friendly and personable. They keep the line moving and all hustle together to make sure people get what they want while creating a welcoming vibe. Because their menu is constantly changing, I wish they had an outdoor display board (or maybe in the lobby) that let you know what the day's offerings were so you could be more prepared when you step up to the display cases to order. Preordered a box of beautiful Halloween goodies on pure impulse, and so glad I did! The owner, Chelsea was so kind and very responsive via email. First time heading into the shop to pick up my box- such a beautiful and cheerful interior. Everything in the cases looked beautiful and fresh. Will definitely be back in to sample some other treats. Now, back to the No Tricks, All Treats box: boxed contained four miniature blackout cakes, four cosmic brownies, four snickerdoodles, and four pumpkin whoopie pies.
