What a local gem! Went in on a Sunday morning and it was busy! Me and a few people in line just waiting to get some delicious pastries. They are primarily a Portuguese bakery but they also have other baked goods such as cannolis, croissants, and much more. Every pastry I had was amazing! They are most known for their egg tarts, my personal favorite was the nutella. Everything was extremely affordable. I got 13 baked goods for only $18. I will definitely be coming back here for more. read more

International Bakery - the spread! all this for ($15) - Bakeries Near Me - Waterbury, Connecticut

First time checking out International Bakery in Waterbury. Portuguese bakery. I went with my dad as we were passing through Waterbury. The lady that worked there spoke Spanish, very helpful and sweet. Space was very ample , open. There is a selection of pastries if you are looking for something different. They had different selections of Natas, fresh breads, some sweet , donuts, and mini cheesecakes . Unfortunately nothing gluten free except the mini cheesecakes that were crustless. Prices were great! read more

This is one of the tasty egg tarts i've eaten. The right amount of sweetness and creaminess. They sell other baked goods aside from the tarts. The staff are very polite and friendly. Very welcoming. It's a street parking. Usually there are spots in front of the bakery. I usually come there after work. However, make sure not to come so late as the tarts sell fast like hot pies. Lol. I highly recommend this bakery. read more

Yes, this little unassuming neighborhood bakery had delicious Pastéis de Nata which is egg custard in flaky pastry. I also tried a small cheesecake and it was excellent. I also had sweet, friendly service and a great parking space out front. I strongly recommend the egg custard!!! read more

I heard about International Bakery from instagram and decided to give them a try. The recommendation was to try the Russian pastries. I've never tasted a Russian pastry before so I wanted to check them out. The bakery had a variety of pastries and also mixed in were Italian pastries. I ordered a Nutella Egg Custard Tart, a Regular Egg Custard Tart, Raspberry Egg Custard, and a couple of Cannoli's for my kids. The regular Egg Custard Tart was okay. It was my first time trying it out so I'm not an Egg Custard connoisseur. It tasted a little bland to me but the Nutella and Raspberry Egg Tarts were good. In my opinion the Nutella and Raspberry's brought a flavor to the Egg Custard and gave it a little pizazz. Also, to pay with a card you have to spend ten dollars. The customer service was okay but not the best but all in all, I'm glad I tried something new. read more

International Bakery - Bakeries Near Me - Waterbury, Connecticut

11.8.22 This is one of my favorite places in Waterbury. It's a nondescript building on Baldwin Street that's been there for years. Hidden in plain sight. The parking isn't the greatest but you make due. You know what you're about to embark into flavortown. The Portuguese custard cups are to die for from this place. Did i say Aaaa mazing!!! They sure are. The staff have always been awesome, kind and accommodating. They always have specialty Portuguese custard cups on the weekends. It's whatever they're doing or whatever that have bought for their special weekend custard cups. It usually depends on the time of year and what's readily available to them. The blueberry lemon are absolutely amazingly delicious. They're so complex with their flavor going on in a simple custard cup. The apple caramel are another divine delectable specialty flavor for the custard cups. There's also a lot of people favorite with their Nutella custard cup. Another amazing feat that they've mastered with their specialty weekend flavors. They only make so many of each specialty flavor Portuguese custard cups on the weekends. They do this so they don't waste any, so be prepared to possibly miss out on some of them if you don't arrive early enough. Every now and then I've gotten them where they've been overcooked. This hasn't happened much at all but it has been on a few occasions that I ended up not eating them because the shells have been too hard. Very infrequent occurrences. I've tried their sausage rolls but I haven't been impressed with those at all. I also tried some of their breads and their just meh in my opinion. But, Another crowd favorite which I'm surprised I haven't mentioned yet is their amazing Portuguese hard rolls that are also incredible. People buy them in dozens. These Portuguese rolls fly off the shelves as quick as their phenomenal Portuguese custard cups do. There's so many people that eat these Portuguese rolls with just butter on them. Fan favorites for years past, present and years to come. This is truly a hidden gem in plain sight for some of those who aren't aware of its existence. They've been around for over 20 years. read more

First time there today . It didn't have too much. Less than half full display cases. I bought a loaf of bread that had good tasting crust but it was already on its way to being too hard. The items that were there weren't marked so I couldn't tell what they were. Maybe it's better on weekends. I'll give them another try. read more

We got a variety of custard type of pastries to try at home. Altho prices were very reasonable, we didn't eat it in time for it to be tasty - even after heating it up in oven. The custard in the tarts were too sweet for my liking. I liked better the ratio of custard to crust in the mini almond tart. That was ok. We also got a bag 3 fruit Danish that were in the reduced price section in the front of the store. These were ok. The service was friendly. We did not get any of the portuguese rolls but saw a customer come and get two bags of it so we probably got the wrong thing from the store. read more

Pastel de nata. If you need a reason to try International Bakery I could name a hundred. However, I believe this one item is reason enough. Authentic everything. This is my go to for Portuguese rolls, pastries and bread. I am lucky enough to live in walking distance of this Waterbury gem. read more

Stopped for the pasteis de nada ( Portugese egg tarts ) on a return trip from Boston to New Jersey. After traveling to Lisbon , Portugal I have made a mission of trying them wherever I can find them . I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed them. They are very big and unique to others that I have tasted as they have the distinct addition of lemon which is the traditional way. These were in my top three and my Portugese friend loved them. The stop is worth it and easy off and on the highway. read more

Convenient hours. Open really early. They make cakes and rolls fresh and tasty everyday. Egg Tart is second to none in the area. Portuguese rolls are also pretty good, crunchy outside and fluffy inside. read more

Came for the Natas and was disappointed, asked the lady if they were fresh, she said yes...and they weren't, they were hard, the filling was good but the outside was super chewy and not good, the place is alright, more like a morning coffee stop before work. read more

The location might put you off some, but hands down one of the best bakeries I've been to. International bakery specializes in Portuguese baked goods ranging from rolls to deserts. I've gone multiple times, and I'm making it a goal to try one of all the pastries, there are that good, and have had yet to have a bad pastry, everything is delicious! I highly highly recommend the pastel de nata (they're kind of like a custard cup, except they use egg cream and are way better) they are honestly one of the best deserts ever. Not to mention, everything here is dirt cheap! They should also charge more for all the delicious baked goods they carry. Check them out, and give them a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

If you want the best Portuguese rolls and custard cups in Connecticut, International Bakery is where you must go! I have tried all of the area's Portuguese bakeries, and none compare to this one! My husband loves to toast a roll every morning, butter it, and have it with his coffee. If we don't have International Bakery's rolls in stock, he gets very grumpy, and he is not even Portuguese! International Bakery will make you feel like you're in Portugal with just one bite! read more

Just purchased a dozen rolls for Sunday dinner and after sampling one discovered that they were stale. Called them about it and they said they are are cooked fresh everyday. Some customer service, not even offering a replacement or refund, basically saying I was wrong They have lost a customer! read more

#1) I was disappointed -- The 3 cake rolls I ordered were NOT fresh at all. I bought/ordered these to impress my friends. The bakery gave me OLD rolls. I ordered 3 rolls. All of them are DRY - like they have been out for more than a week. Totally disappointed!!! The store KILLED my business and all the potential business by giving not fresh cake rolls. #2) The customer service is ZERO in here. The cashier/front ladies had NO patience. Yes, it is a busy store. But, please, customer is the boss. They push you to make a decision and they rush you to finish your conversation. They teased you and lectured you when you can not make your mind. Definitely have the attitude problem. #3) Not accepting credit card -- try to evade tax??? read more

OMG, their egg tarts are so GOOD. I am very selective when it comes to my favor desert - egg tart. Growing up I used to eat them every morning. This place has, by far, some of the best egg tarts I've had. Very crispy outside with a warm softly custardily filling. The only thing I'd change is that it was a little greasy...but that comes with the buttery taste. So it's a tough call. Overall good! read more
