Nice vibe, great area and one of my favorite coffee shops but the quality has noticeably changed 1. They alway mess up my drink order. I ask for hot coffee they give me iced, I ask for iced they give me hot. I ask for a certain flavor they give me the wrong one 2. The bakery isn't as great as it was back in the day. They used to have a larger variety and they used to change/add new stuff and now it's the same boring selection week in week out and looks dry 3.WAAYY TO OVERPRICED to be having the first two issues listed. Not sure if they changed management and that's why this has happened but they are NOT my #1 coffee shop anymore...shame! read more

My 1st time @ this cozy shop. The baked goods looked delicious. All homemade by the shop owner. I went home w/a maple walnut scone which I enjoyed. I had my oat milk latte. The service was wonderful. This place NEVER fails to amaze me. Whoever makes the baked goods deserves a raise and a great vacation. Words can't explain how good their baked goods are especially their banana chocolate chip nut bread. I also tried their pumpkin cream cheese bread today and it was AMAZING. The consistency, taste, texture and sweetness were spot on. Their pastries aren't overly sweet to the point where you wouldn't enjoy them for breakfast either. They're very flexible with swapping out ingredients and have a great iced tea and coffee selection! They also have a great outdoor seating area surrounded by pretty flowers and nicely cut grass. Everything bagel toasted with cream cheese was prepared perfectly, iced chai tea latte, iced caramel latte, and a bacon egg and cheese on wheat toast were all excellent! They used to be my favorite breakfast spot , ever since the staff change this place is going down hill quickly. The price is never the same, theres like 5 people in the back but they're either on their cell phones or standing around. The condiments area the liquid sugar is always sticky. With all that help you think someone would wipe it down. The two Spanish ladies were a true assets to this establishment. They knew exactly what I wanted and how I liked it, always professional and courteous. The line could be out the door and they would have everyone in and out within a reasonable amount of time. A true neighborhood place! $1 for a large brewed coffee, but they serve espresso drinks and tea of course. Breakfast sandwiches are prepared when you order and range from $3 to $5. Also pastries, bagels, oatmeal, lunch sandwiches, and salads. 5 stars because of the value and quality for the price. Isn't that always the best measurement? The walls are decorated with fun-to-examine 1930's group photos from the Hillhouse School. If you look at the one on the left by the window you can see a gentleman in the back row who is in the picture twice! He ran from one side of the picture to the other end while the camera was moving. Weak coffee, insolent staff. I went outside and opened umbrella. There was a light rain. No sooner had I done that, then a staff member came out and said, "we're keeping the umbrellas closed because it's supposed to get windy" I told her I'd look out for it, and close it if wind crept up. Meanwhile their sign which swings if there's a breeze hung lifelessly from its chain. My wife was inside ordering and well, the staff was up in arms, complaining loudly within her earshot, "I can't believe that! I mean he's pribably not even buying anything. I told him the nanager said clise it!" After that, my wife who had experienced the brunt of their rudeness -and was bandied around by the incompetent staff who finally got the order wrong- came out with the coffees. Warm, pumped out from their defective nachines, weak, watery, the cream had turned it almost white. read more

i cannot figure this place out. I don't think it has an actual kitchen, just a microwave, a toaster, and a hot plate or two. There's definitely no hood fan. there's some baked goods, but it never smells like anything's been baked which leads me to believe that everything is just purchased at the stop and shop down the street. I've never seen a single vendor make a delivery. it's never overwhelmingly busy, but when I went in on Sunday there were (no exaggeration) at least 8 people working. most of them were on their phones or just sitting around. I can't blame them either, because with nobody seemingly in charge and the owner nowhere to be found, it's an easy way to make a few bucks without having to actually do anything. It's a cute looking spot in a unique location but falls flat in virtually every single way which ,unfortunately for the costumer, seems to be of absolutely no concern to the owner. Each time I go, I regret It. I pray for the day that somebody buys it and chooses to do things the right way, but for now we all have to settle for its sad little coffee shop charade. read more

I'm repeatedly astonished when sweet teenage girls make and hand me perfect cappuccinos at this place. Two thirds of the baristas in New Haven are at a loss as to how to actually make a decent and balanced drink, and these innocent, angelic, doubtlessly relatives of the owner make them perfectly every time. That always amazes me. The food here is good, I like the salad and sandwich cards that offer you the option of putting your own dish together. They offer a decent variety of ingredients that allow you to be pretty creative, personal highlights include pesto mayo, craisins, and apples. I also love their huevos rancheros, definitely feels and tastes like it was made in a kitchen at home. Their atmosphere is adorable, they go for this Victorian tea house kind of look but it's not stuffy. Definitely a Westville neighborhood café. Most of their signs are handwritten and they draw a seasonal chalkboard with each of their drinks catered to the weather with cute illustrations. Again, adorable. The only downside here is it's not always incredibly speedy, but it's an offshoot coffee shop in residential Westville...not the heart of school/commerce driven downtown. They're not slow, just not ultra hyped up on quadruple espresso shots fast. This is a great place if you want to relax, study, or catch up with a friend in a comfortable environment. read more

The place is filthy, take one peek into the kitchen or the coffee counter and numerous food/health service violations are apparent. The manager or boss screams at the staff, and the staff try to do their best to smile and help customers. They need to be reported for health code violations as well as treatment of employees. Our experience at Deja Brew was unhinged, and it feels that the disorganized nature of the establishment is due to mismanagement. The staff is clearly really new and under trained. There is no structure or organization which results in orders being forgotten or coming out ridiculously late. We got waters at the very end of the meal. Food and coffee is average at best. Even pancakes, perhaps the easiest meal to make, were all overcooked on one side and undercooked on the other. The owner and the ineptitude of the employees creates an uncomfortable vibe. read more

This café is absolutely a delight. The decorations are beautiful, the barista I had was very kind and helpful. I ordered the lemon blueberry with lemon glaze thing, and I experienced transcendence. I've been coming to this place for quite some time since moving into the neighborhood. The food has always been great, but a bit pricey. The last time I was there, the manager/boss screamed at the staff so loudly that the customers inside kept looking around and then eventually went outside because she was screaming at them. Even outside, you can hear her screaming at them! You can overhear the customers saying " that is no way to speak to someone!" It was very unprofessional and she was extremely condescending to her staff. I understand they were training, hence why the service was so, but nonetheless they are kids and that is no way to speak or treat the staff in that manner. You can tell the staff was holding back tears when tending to the customers! As a result of this, I am unsure if I want to return based on what I've witnessed. read more

I used to go every morning and would echo the reviews from 2021. They changed their hours at the start of the summer of 2022 and the previous ladies who worked Monday-Friday are gone. I've lived in Westville for over two years. Unfortunately, it took me almost a year to learn this place existed, because I still haven't made my way through the entire menu. There's sandwiches, baked goods, salads, coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, lots of seasonal stuff...the only criticism i can think of for Deja Brew is that all these items are spread out on different, tiny, menu boards all over the place. It can be confusing on first visits what's actually available. So the most important advice would be to scour the horizon to really get an idea of your options. So I've yet to try literally EVERYTHING on the menu, but literally everything I've had has been top notch. They really know their way around coffee, and the breakfast sandwiches in particular are some of my favorite in the area. There's hot cider in the fall, frozen banana chocolate lattes (!!!!!!!) in the summer, seriously I could write 14 paragraphs just on what's available. So obviously the food and drink are the most important for a coffee shop/cafe, but the place is also super cute and the staff are always nice, outgoing, and polite. Looks like some reviews have brought up the lack of parking, but street parking on Edgewood is a cinch if you've parallel parked more than 3 times in your life. And you can park on both sides of West Rock Ave if you stay north of Edgewood (south side is permit parking but I've always gotten away with it...don't tell anyone). So yeah. Deja Brew is a lovely local business that's really earned all the support it's gotten so far. Give it more! It would make me very happy! read more
