Decent food - I had the pork chop, my wife had the butternut squash ravioli, friends had the duck (we all steered away from the seafood based on the many poor reviews mentioning subpar seafood dishes). Ambience was festive - maybe a bit loud. Service was slow - took forever to get our drinks... we refused to place our food order until we received our drinks. Waitstaff is nice and make an effort but they are understaffed and under-trained and/or under-experienced. And finally, let's face it... The best part of Scampo is having drinks in the main lobby of the Liberty Hotel before or after dinner. We went after dinner and drank & danced until the DJ wrapped up at midnight. read more

We are staying at the hotel we're the restaurant is located. Service was excellent and the ambience was elevated. Our bartender recommended wines that were delicious. I had the pork chop and she had a lobster dish. Lobster was chewy and my pork chop had a little to no flavor. Nothing on either of the plates popped out. The food was pretty bland. I would say this place is overpriced Definitely not worth the money that we paid for the meal. I would recommend this place to go for cocktails, but not for dinner. read more

We had one of my top 3 meals of my lifetime at Scampo. The pate was the best ever (including Paris) and the duck was amazing. The oven roasted pizza was heavenly. Even better was the overall service, especially from our sever Brian. He took time to explain the menu and was very attentive. The place is so comfortable. This! Spot! Rocks! The food at Scampo was delicious! The faves bean purée with pine nuts garnish was visually stunning and had a luscious taste with the homemade bread sticks. We ordered the calamari and bufala mozzarella apps to start and they were fabulous. Crisped calamari with a spicy sauce was so good. The bufala mozzarella was so creamy and decadent and the toasted bread was a perfect complement to the cheese. It was a taste of Italy. The sugarnut ravioli was perfection!! Definitely going back for more. Friends had the halibut special with ravioli and buerre blanc and it was a taste of Heaven. The other dish shared was the sirloin steak with blue cheese sauce. All plates were cleaned! And the pear desert - Devine!!! I'm not sure why this restaurant has a 3.9 rating but based on our meals from last night it is a 5.0 rating. Noting that several of Boston's top chefs were also dining (Ken Oringer) and that to me is pretty telling. The seasonal menu was gorgeous and we will be back!! read more

It was garnished with raw veggies and the agnolotti was not as expected, they were underfilled and just bland. I was really confused with this dish. calamari fritto w/ shishito peppers .. pepperoncini & spicy lemon aioli 19: this was actually very good, however, they put the aioli slopped on the plate and half of the calamari was drenched in it. lobster pizza 30: Oily and toppings over cooked. I've been going intermittently to Scampo for over ten years. The vibe is great. The server Holly, who I seem to have every time, is wonderful. The good has definitely declined over time. I've had the lobster pizza dating back to Biba and it was always an amazing highlight. Now, very bland and uninspiring. The swordfish was a mish-mosh of also unseasoned and bland elements and the swordfish itself was the size and width of a half a piece of bread. Tempura green beans very good. Deserts excellent. I think the chef has let the specialness that the food used to have suffer as the restaurant has thrived because of location and buzz. Need to refocus please!!!! read more

Friday dinner for four Tbh surprised we were able to book the night before. It's located in the lobby of a hotel so we had high hopes it would be good. The tables were a bit too close together. I didn't like the darkness and loudness either but it was tolerable. Maybe the other thing that bothered me was how our table was right in front of the hallway in front of the kitchen. We ordered a fried calmari to share as an appetizer. I don't like how the batter was not airy enough. Also it got soggy quickly. It was too thick too, or I should say the calamari meat inside was too thin. It didn't make sense why the legs part was one big piece that wasn't cut smaller. Also they have a paper bowl in the middle of the plate probably to give the impression it's a lot - not impressed. The cream sauce that came with it only helped with softening the tough batter but it didn't make the calamari more attractive. I ordered lobster ravioli I was intrigued by chestnut flour and I think it made the dish earthier, perfect for fall. The lobster filling and topping were high quality lobsters. The best part of the dish was the sauce/toppings. The infused butter was so fragrant. It was a whole slab of butter and can feel the heaviness but it was nice. The candied walnuts were a fun addition from its sweetness and crunchiness. I like how they added some carrot bits for color. Although there were only three pieces of ravioli, they were huge. Alongside the other parts of the dish, I was satisfied but definitely barely. My friends ordered: seabass with purple yam, grilled salmon, duck with pomegranate and pear. The seabass had clams too so it seemed like a bustling dish. The best part imo was the purple yam. It was super smooth in texture and the contrasting color is striking. I also like how sweet it is. The salmon was normal too but I liked how they added beets. The duck was surprising! The portions were big and the meat was so tender. Pear and pomegranate added slight sweetness that made the whole dish more fall ready. Wild rice made this dish even more filling, but I wish it was a bit softer. Perhaps a bit more greens would be nice to balance out the heaviness. For dessert we shared a tiramisu because we were too full to get more. It wasn't my type. The cream was too sweet and coffee wasn't strong enough. The candied nuts and raisins didn't make the situation better. Another thing I must point out was the service. Our server Kurt was very polite and organized, a bit too much to the point it seemed robotic. I appreciated the elegant movements when arranging and collecting items on the table. Whenever he asked if we needed anything or took our orders, it seemed like he would give the same response regardless of what we said. Overall the food quality and combinations are worth coming back. Ate here last night as part of a large group so the menu was set with some choices. Often times these meals, even when at a good restaurant, are not quite up to the normal standard when you go with a smaller group. That was not the case here. Every bite from appetizer through entree and dessert was delicious. Items were exquisitely prepared with great attention to detail. I had a scallop appetizer with hamachi crudo, chili crisp chicken, and a sorbet dessert. Again, each bite was delicious. My husband had a wonderful Caesar salad, orecchiette with Turkish lamb meatballs, and Tiramisu. I had a bite of his meatballs. I really found it amazing that they did a variety of styles from Asian to Turkish so well. In addition, I have to say that the service was top notch as well, very attentive, and even though we were clearly closing out the place, they never left us feeling unwelcome and were truly wonderful! Kudos! This will be on my list of must go places when I'm back in Boston. read more

Got complimentary breadsticks with a fava bean puree, really enjoyed the puree. A nice change from the usual bread with butter or olive oil. Had heard a lot about the lobster pizza so we split that to start. It could seem like it would be overly rich but since it's got such a thin crust, it wasn't so the 3 of us were able to polish off 2 slices each easily. We also split the mozzarella tasting menu which I liked quite a bit. It came with burrata, bufala, housemade, and quark, and all 4 cheeses were distinct in their flavors/texture. My favorite was the quark, but all were great. For my entree, I decided to go with one of the spaghetti dishes since the menu cover said Spaghetti menu so I figured they must be proud of it and there were a lot of preparations to choose from. I decided to go with the spaghetti w/ cracklings and hot pepper since it seemed unusual compared to the cacio e pepe, carbonara, bolognese, etc that you can find at other restaurants. The waitress said the ones listed on the menu were appetizer portion but I could upgrade to an entree size for another $10 I think, taking it from 3oz to 6oz. Since I'd already had some breadsticks, pizza, and mozzarella, I decided to stick with the smaller portion which turned out to be just right. It came with more cracklings than I expected, which were very well done, the perfect level of crispness. I also liked the light heat of the hot pepper, esp since I already like adding red pepper flakes to pastas. The bf got the rabbit "porchetta" w/ butterfly pasta which he thought was ok, not as good as he had hoped it would be. Scampo can be found on the bottom floor of the liberty hotel. I cannot believe this place used to be an old jail! The architecture is so pretty. Ambience wise this places is great for a date night, or for us, a double date night. The wine list is extensive but we stuck with cocktails because their *** was delicious. That says a lot because I normally switch to a Chianti if I'm having Italian. Starters... the lamb pizza is a must. It sounds heavy but it is not! The crust is paper thin. The ground lamb is abundant but not overpowering. There is just a tad bit of cheese to add creaminess but not heaviness. This is perfect to share between two people. Because we were with another couple, we added the calamari. This was very lightly breaded and super fresh. I loved the side of pickled bell peppers and fried Shiaitos. I would ask for extra side of the spicy aioli right off the bat. While the dish is beautifully seasoned on its own, the spicy aioli definitely elevates the dish. Entrees. The chicken is beautifully cooked. I think the star on the plate however are the sun chokes. They are perfectly crisp and beautifully seasoned. Pasta wise. I loved the acidity of the pomodoro and this would be my choice of pasta if I came again. We did try the crackling and This surprisingly was not my favorite. I usually love any type of pork but I found the cracklings just coated my tongue with bursts of fat. Maybe if there was some acidity like lemon to cut the lard but the sauce was just garlic and olive oil... so it was a bit too heavy for me. Loved this place!! I'm always a little hesitant about restaurants in hotels but this one did not turn out to be subpar like so many others I've tried before. The experience and decor were excellent, the staff were very kind and accommodating, and the food was amazing! I sat inside but they did have the option of either indoor or outdoor tables. The indoor seating was nicely spaced apart and it felt private/safe enough not to worry about having our masks off indoors. The pumpkin/butternut squash pasta dish was really tasty, well plated, and came as a good sized portion! I'll definitely try to return in the summer! read more

This was the worst dining experience I've had in Boston. The hostess was slow to seat us, instead answering questions from other staff members 10 minutes after our reservation. There was a roach / yes a roach / in our arugula salad. The manager took the salad away, cleared the table.... And then we wait 15 minutes for our bar drinks to show up. Then the manager comes back to apologize ... after 20 minutes? Wow. Dinner was ok but not spectacular. The wait staff was indifferent, like nobody knew their was a roach in our salad? My husband and I visited this restaurant for the first time because of the good reviews. It was very ellegant and the service was good. Appearing to be a higher end restaurant, we endexpected a high-quality meal. To our disappointment, it was far from that. The menu was very limited and what we ordered was not good at all. The calamari was heavily fried and oily with way too much breading. The pasta bolognese that I ordered was so beyond salty that I could not eat it and had to send it back. I replaced it with the specialty meatball and pasta, which was not very tasty and also over salted. I will say the service was good in that they were very nice about replacing my meal although I had to wait until my husband was almost done his meal by the time it arrived. We were disappointed that a manager did not come by to talk to us, and we were charged extra price for my replacement meal. We definitely would not go back. PROS: Food was good Variety good Ambience was great CONS: Pricey Food took longer than average to come out. This is located at the Liberty Hotel, so there is valet. Our waiter was very friendly. The food was excellent and definitely worth spending the money. The only downside is the slow service. We were here for about 3.5-4 hours on a slower Sunday night while the World Series were on. I've never been in a restaurant for that long just waiting on food. read more

And why I had eaten three of my five ravioli before I was offered shredded cheese? Food: uninspiring, bland. Not often that a restaurant can make burrata flavorless but they achieved it. Ravioli was interesting but just left me wanting more. Ambience: loud without appropriate energy. Didn't feel authentic. Overall: probably was great once, this is clearly on autopilot. Yum! came here with some coworkers last tuesday for the first time. it was a table of about 14-16 of us. we got theee pizzas: the white truffle, artichoke and prosciutto, and sausage. we got the spaghetti cacio e pepe and spaghetti bolognese. two mozzarella tasting plates. and the calamari. i didn't get to try the sausage pizza but the white truffle pizza was AMAZING, hands down my favorite pizza. the artichoke and prosciutto was very refreshing due to the arugula mix on it. i really enjoyed both pastas and the burrata on the mozzarella tasting plate. i came back yesterday for my anniversary dinner with my bf and invited my sister and her husband to join. although i had a reservation for 2 people, scampo was very accommodating with the switch to 4 people. we ordered the artichoke and prosciutto pizza and the white truffle pizza. the calamari. duck fat french fries. the queen cut prime rib and the spaghetti bolognese. the white truffle pizza did not disappoint. eating it for the second time was even more amazing! the sweetness of the fig, the oyster mushrooms. so yummmy!!! however i didn't enjoy the artichoke and prosciutto pizza as much as i did last tuesday though. the calamari was also on the salty side for me but everyone else seemed to enjoy it along with the peppers it came with! the queen cut prime rib was delicious! it comes with a fig bread, cauliflower, and a parmesan truffle soufflé. i could have done without the soufflé, none of us were a fan of it. but the prime rib itself was good paired with the horseradish sauce it came with. the duck fat fries were SO GOOD. the crispness and the taste of truffle was to die for. the bolognese was also yummy but lacked the pancetta taste that i really enjoyed when we had it on tuesday. our server, john, was the best! he was funny, knowledgeable about the menu, and overall super nice! we would love to have him as our server again in the future! also the pera margarita with sugar rim, is BOMB. read more

We had a reservation at the counter. We weren't very excited about the choice - we felt removed from the dining rooms and bar. Our server was disinterested but the service was adequate. Our chilled wellfleet oysters were very tasty and fresh. Another starter of foie gras was a big disappointment - It was very rare to the point of being raw, I didn't like that. A dish of butternut squash ravioli was good, not great. My partner's spaghetti vongole would have been very tasty had it not been so overwhelmingly spicy. Pretty solid food in a luxurious setting. Lydia Shire's excellent Italian restaurant in Beacon Hill is a great getaway -- you always know what to expect and it will always be comforting, homey, and delicious. The spaghetti options are consistently alluring and I find myself drawn to the Bolognese time and again -- just perfect for a chilly winter evening, beefy and warm and tomato-y. The pizzas are delicious as well, and the mozzarella bar is fun, although not the "best" mozzarella I've ever had. If I'm honest, the puntarelle and cinnamon bread paired with the burrata on this particular occasion we visited were even more memorably than the cheese itself! We did think the garlic bread could have used more garlic, and the yuca gnocchi with crispy pig ears was tasty but the portion was definitely on the small side ($26 for 10-12 gnocchi and 3-5 pieces of pig ear). Dessert was fine -- we got the seasonal cookie plate but probably would opt for something more festive next time (I'm just not the biggest fan of Italian cookies, liking American gooey cookies or Scottish shortbreads and millionaire's bars a lot more). Wine was yummy as well. Service was a little odd -- I think our waiter was new and a bit overenthusiastic, and the original bill he brought us included our neighboring table's food as well. Overall, though, Scampo is a fun and fancy night out without being overly stuffy. $150 total after tax and tip, for 2 drinks, 2 apps, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert plus coffee. read more

Although the service was excellent, the food fell woefully short of expectation. The green bean tempura, while good, was nothing substantively better than you'd get at your go-to sushi spot. The autumn pizza was overwhelmed by bitterness from the broccoli rabe (obviously not blanched prior) and seemingly canned clams. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to find any bits of guanciale on the pie. To borrow the Portnoy Scale, the pizza was a firm 4.2/10. The pesto was rather bland; the kitchen could use some remedial seasoning training. Finally, the bread pudding was served out of a sad cafeteria-style drawer with an oversized spatula. Said spatula mauled the cold/stale bread pudding beyond all recognition....a fitting ending for this meal. read more

I am extremely disappointed to be leaving this review. I was so excited to come here based on how all the yelp reviews rav about it. But first off. If I'm spending hundreds of dollars at dinner, I feel like you can park my car for a lot less than 27 dollars. Or maybe even free? Valet was pretty steep. The ambiance was great and I loved seeing the open kitchen. We had like 8 waiters and non of them ever introduced themself and the one who finally took our order literally just said "you know what you're having?" And it was the first time we ever even saw her! Who do we ask for a drink, I can't even shout their names because they never told us! I do appreciate that they put our dessert order in early since we had a show to make at 730pm, but someone introduce yourself! The food was good but why the heck do they put the breadsticks on the table???at first we thought she dropped them but then realized, nope that's where they intended to put them! I'm so underwhelmed at how poor and impersonal our service was. I won't come back nor recommend it to anyone ever! read more

We had an amazing experience here. Both my wife and I were in Boston for work and had the luxury of staying at the Liberty and made Scampo a date night. Fava bean purée that was served immediately was incredible. Parmesan cheese sticks for dipping. Unreal. Chef Lydia stopped by to say hi and I asked her how to make both and she didn't hesitate to tell me, which I thought was so nice!
