Bumping up my rating to 4 stars after a second visit. Tried the Yum Nua (Spicy Beef Salad) and this dish alone makes Sawasdee a destination for me. Now we're talking real Thai flavors. The Tom Yum Soup (shrimp) was also great. My guess is that they use Thai fish sauce in both of these dishes, which imparts that je ne sais quoi "umami" flavor that totally makes them both pop. Why not 5 stars? Some of the other dishes still seem to miss the mark. The Hot Basil Crispy Chicken was a complete disappointment. The chicken was overly seasoned with soy sauce, which overpowered all other flavors. I could barely taste the basil and the saltiness had me chugging glass after glass of water. We also got a Red Curry Duck dish that was head-and-shoulders better than the chicken, but the red curry sauce was just a wee bit too sweet; otherwise, it would have been perfect. The place had very nice decor. We got seated in a two person booth that was cozy. I ordered a Thai ice tea, it came with a little rosette on the straw, which I thought was cute. The drink was delish. For appetizers, we had the shrimp in blanket, it was very good, crispy and the chili sauce it came with was the perfect compliment. For my entree, I got the Crispy Pad Thai, it was a bit too sweet for my tastes. It becomes sweeter the more you eat. I would recommend balancing it out with a bowl of steamed white rice, which is what i did. My boyfriend ordered the Sweet n Sour Chicken which comes with a bowl of white rice, The chicken was nicely balanced, not overly sweet or sour. He thought it was delish. Overall we had a nice experience, with friendly and fast waitservice. For the both of us, that's including drink and appetizers, it cost us a total of less than $30, which is a good price for the amount of food you get. read more

I don't understand how this place got so many great reviews! I tried the Tom Yum soup and Seafood Tornados. Soup was simply plain. It tasted like it's been sitting in the kitchen for a long time and poured the hot water. Not great. The main dish was overflowing with heavy sauce. It drenched the entire dish, so I asked more rice to subdue the overwhelming taste. It didn't help. Seafood ingredients were store bought, not fresh. Came in waited 5 min to be seated didn't see Anyone so I grab a menu to look at while standing their finally someone came out seated me oredered crispy chicken and beef satay and pad Thai to go... the beer satay came out it was ok but kinda tough to chew. Then my main dish came out the chicken was not crispy at all I asked the waitress if my dish was what I ordered and she replied yes .. the chicken was soggy and I ordered sticky rice with my dish instead of keeping the rice o n the side they put the rice on the plate so now the rice is also soggy and it was also kind of hard it's like they just reheated the rice from the night be for i thought t his place would be good base on the high star review it wasn't what I expected... This food (especially the appetizers) was not good. This is our first time going here for dinner and most likely the last. The appetizers taste like those bad frozen PF Chang's dishes from the supermarket and most of the food had no flavor. We were in Salem, and everyone had craving for Thai food. As we are not local, we had to trust Yelp reviews to find a good place nearby and Yelp did not disappoint. We stopped at 4 PM which is when they reopen from mid-afternoon break, and the place was empty, but there were a lot of pick-up orders. We had lovely late lunch/early dinner, enjoying all the traditional favorites we normally get at our Thai places at home. They were delicious here and the service was great as well. Extra star for the Yelp Check-in deal and moderately low prices - otherwise, Sawasdee has let me down. My experiences before seemed to consistently decline each time, but this was a low point - frozen crab rangoons, drinks forgotten, and lousy pad thai. The bright spots are curry dishes, of which the make your own, and dishes off the menu are well-prepared with great flavor. First off the bat, our beers were forgotten and never delivered - we noticed by the arrival of the food but declined to say anything. This was after receiving crab rangoons that were still frozen inside. For main dishes, we ordered pad thai and mango curry. The pad thai was below average - some weird side flavors working their way into the taste (but not too peanuty, which is often a complaint of other thai restaurants). The mango curry was the highlight - great yellow curry flavors combining with fresh veggies and mango - recommended at $12.95. Thankfully the Yelp Check-in deal and absence of beers lowered our bill, but we left quite disappointed at what could still be a great local thai restaurant. read more

Above average Thai food with a nice dine in. This was one of my go-to spots for Asian food around the Danvers area for lunch. Drunken Noodle was/is still the food I always get 3 spices. The service was good. Over the time though, however, the portion got slightly smaller and the price went higher. With that being said, they will only get 4 stars from me. Having lived in Tampa for 5 years, my husband and I became spoiled with amazing Thai food. There seems to be a 5-Star Thai restaurant on every corner.... Naturally when we moved to MA we still wanted to be able to get our regular Thai fix, and this has proved to be more difficult than we thought. In the past year we have probably tried about 10 different Thai restaurants on the North Shore, and many did not stack up to what we were used to in Tampa. Sawasdee, however, has proven at last to be the exception to the rule. I have been here 4 times now (twice for lunch and twice for dinner) and this place does not disappoint! From the appetizers (we have tried spring rolls and crab Rangoon) to the entrees (panang curry, my personal favorite, and pad Thai are what I have tried) everything is spot on! This is one of our new go-to date night places for sure. Wish it was closer to our home so we could get takeout! read more

Awesome little restaurant located in Salem. I was much delighted because i wasnt expecting to get anything veggie out here, but Salem seems to have become a hipster place since i last visited. The food was good for the most part. I had the sweet n sour tofu with vegetables. It was okay, but i felt like it was a bit too tomato-y. Came here not knowing much about how Thai food should taste coming from Austin Texas but after I took my first bite I was hooked. There's an extra dimension of flavor in the pad Tai here... I am pretty bad when it comes to stereotypes of what an authentic restaurant should look like. So when I walked in I was a little skeptical because of modern and nice it looked but I was quickly proved wrong by the food.
