Still awesome! Red Sugar is among the regular places I enjoy ordering from. The food is consistently excellent, ready when promised, and oh so flavorful! This is the proverbial neighborhood gem-kind of hard to find if you don't know where it is, small, reasonably priced, and truly enjoyable! Need something customized? Not a problem. Need accommodation for ingredients (like gluten free)? Not a problem. Want to pay a little less? Order by phone and pay in cash-save 10%. Need something bland and boring? Oh wait, that's not what they do. Food is fresh. Ingredients are fresh. The recipes are authentic. This is a very small family restaurant focused primarily on takeout. I feel like I've eaten a lot of Thai and Asian cuisine in my life and this place is top tier. We grabbed take out from here on a Friday night, about 45 mins from calling we could go pick up. We ordered for two - spicy crab Rangoon, pad Thai with chicken, soup and spring rolls. Everything was above bar. The spicy crab goon was the best I've had and came with this unique sauce that I'm forgetting (sorry), about 6-8 pieces I think we got. Spring rolls 10/10, and then the pad Thai was enough to provide two BIG meals for two. And of course was delicious. I'm an explore kind of gal but I may have found my home here. (Name was similar) I returned, the owner berated him in front of me, and told him he was paying for it. You can learn a lot about a restaurant based on how they treat their staff. Based on a friend's recommendation, the high Yelp rating, and the appetizing photos, I was looking forward to dinner at the Red Sugar Café. Sadly, it was a disappointment, which was a shame, because it has a potential to be not just good, but excellent. The food had significant imperfections that could all have been solved pretty easily. The dining experience, unfortunately, completely sucked, though again, I don't think it would have taken that much effort to significantly improve it. Three of us had * Pad Thai (B-) The main problem was that they used skinny rather than wider rice noodles, and even worse, the noodles were glued together in a gooey lump. If you could ignore that (which we couldn't), the rest of the ingredients were fine and the seasoning was excellent. * Chicken Panang Curry (B-) Again, the sauce was the highlight; homemade with an excellent texture and flavor. But the ingredients were hugely disappointing. There were a few slices of chicken, two lonely slices of carrot, and two sad tiny pieces of green pepper. * Island Shrimp (A-) The excellent homemade oyster sauce was also a winner, and there were lots of shrimp. I gave it an A- only because their notion of assorted vegetables meant mostly carrots. Overall I thought the flavors were great, but the food lacked green vegetables, too heavily leaning on (cheaper?) carrots instead.. It was also generally spicier than expected, including the Pad Thai (which had no stars for spiciness), and the Panang Curry, which we asked to be made milder, to accommodate the friend who dined with us and can't really tolerate spicy food at all. Reading the reviews afterwards, I saw that inconsistent spiciness seems to be a known problem. The place primarily is a take-out business, but it does attempt to convey a sense that one could enjoy eating there, while completely failing to deliver on that promise. There were only a few tables, but the overall ambience seemed pretty nice, including the seating, furnishing and lighting. We got there early at ~6pm, and people were already at one of the tables, so we thought all would be well. However, once we sat down at one of the other tables (which were by the window) we realized that the area was just too cold -- probably due to thermally inadequate glass and too little area heating. The chairs were cold as were we, so we considered going elsewhere but realized that we were there, we were hungry, we could wear our coats, and that our butts would probably warm up the chairs eventually. In fact, even though we were not as comfortable as we might have liked, surprisingly, for the most part, we did manage to tune out the cold. The next problem was that the food took a really long time to come -- about 45 minutes, maybe a bit more. Again, delving into the reviews afterwards, this also seems to be a known problem. The congealed noodles might have made me want to send the Pad Thai back, but we were just too hungry at that point. The pictures on Yelp showed food in actual plates -- not fancy, but nice -- and served with real silverware. However, our food arrived in takeout containers along with paper bowls and cheap plasticware that bent on use. This was unpleasant and seemed a completely unnecessary bait-and-switch. So overall, not the dining out experience we were hoping for. read more

This is a small Thai restaurant in Wakefield that is still only set up for takeout. I ordered over the phone and they pointed out that they have a 10% cash discount, which is a nice deal. When I showed up to pay and get my order, I noticed that they had what looked like a pallet of coconut milk and fish sauce, and the two people behind the counter were conversing in what sounded to me like Thai. All good signs. The food was piping hot and packed up to not spill in the bag. When I got it home, the cashew chicken tasted fresh, including the proteins. I also sampled the pad see ew, and that was also good. The flavor profile tasted like traditional Thai, which I consider a good thing. I'm a bit picky about Thai food after living in Seattle and visiting Thailand, but I'm happy to report that this place is great. read more

I ordered the chicken satay, yellow curry and a Thai tea. My order was to go and even with all my additional requests due to food allergies, everything was exactly as I ordered it. Did take out from this restaurant for the 1st time , though living in Wakefield for 15 yrs. It was superb, fantastic, delicious, and would definitely recommend. Ordered the drunken noodles and substituted chicken for shrimp for an additional $4, well worth it. Dish was large, full of spicy tasty noodles and shrimp. Enough for at least 2-3 people. Husband ordered sesame chicken which he loved, staff was very friendly, ordered on phone , 25 min to be ready. Would highly recommend. I'm not sure how anyone can complain about the Tom Yum soup here, which is legit the best thing on the menu and the best Tom Yum I've had before. It has everything another reviewer said was left out, so that's very odd to me. Other than that, this is some authentic af Thai. I've visited for the past 3 years, and it's consistently very good -- as in, it's good for takeout, but if you dine in its excellent. Unlike most other Thai places, there's little sugar in each dish and there is a complexity to the flavor. Red Sugar also has a very homey feel to it. The family who works here are awesome. This is easily my favorite Thai place around Boston. I wish it was closer to the city, but what can ya do. read more

Just ordered take out from here and they said 30-35 minutes on the phone. I waited exactly that time before even leaving my house. I have been standing in the rain waiting for at least 45 minutes now because they didn't even start my food until I asked them about it. The food here is incredible, the staff is friendly, and you can tell that they really care about what they put out. However, they often take a long time to finish an order (I've waited up to an hour past the time they said it would be ready) and heat on the food fluctuates wildly. You may order mild one day and get the hottest food you've ever had, and get the hot version the next day and it'll have barely any kick. Even so, I keep coming back because the food is that good. read more
