Late night our order was never filled. As instructed online, we placed our order on New Year Eve at 1pm for a pickup at 7. Luckily, we weren't asked to pay until pickup. My husband showed up to pick up at 7 and the line was out the door with angry customers saying their orders weren't ready as promised. He left and returned at 740 to be told it still wasn't ready. As he waited he spoke to others who had been there for two hours waiting. We couldn't believe it. When he asked when it would be ready they said they couldn't tell him. Customers were leaving without orders. And my biggest gripe is that they continued to take calls over the phone. How!?! We called China Wok who took our order and had it ready in 20 minutes. Very organized inside. While the food is good at Pacific Grove, we had to share this experience as we will not be returning in the future. Such a great go-to spot. Whether you pick up or eat-in, the service is fast and they always get your order right. They have tons of combo plate options, and sampler plates, which are great if you want a little bit of a few different things. They're especially good choices if you have friends over and want a variety to snack on. I really like that they have so many options and combos. It's clean inside there is plenty of seating. First visit in nearly ten years to this shopping center sit-down place with booths around the periphery and a lively bar crowd in the middle behind walls. Pretty generic vibe, not jumping out as either old school or authentic. Kinda middle of the road. Scallion Pancake: An immediate eye-catcher. Thick, tanned, somewhat crisp on top, very giving and flexible underneath, and plenty of dark green scallions I could taste and feel more than with just about any other scallion pancake. Dark ginger dipping sauce a little thicker than usual. Elite. Egg Rolls: Crisp in a Ritz cracker way with a dry, crumbly, more bendable chew underneath. Borderline dry filling with not too much flavor. Hate to say it, but not much better than a La Choy product. Below average. Spareribs: A bright red assortment of sizes, some with two bones between massive hunks of pork. Profusely lacquered in what looks like the Sherwin Williams treatment, but these had more complex flavor and plenty of char for contrast. It took a little tugging to get through them, but neither tough nor dry; these were very enjoyable. Well above average. Pork Egg Foo Yong: Brown omelette cakes with extra thick (pudding-like) sauce served on the side. Very tender interior with meat and vegetables complementing the egg; seasonings inside were as noticeable as the sauce. Well above average to near-elite. Would definitely get this again. Pork Fried Rice: More tan here; neither light nor dark of color but a little light on flavor. Many pink pork nuggets to offset that, along with sparser allotments of onion, egg, and bean sprout. Fresh grains, good aroma. All things considered, only a bit above average for me, but those who aren't as obsessed with finding that great lost bowl of pork fried rice from the 70s might possibly be thrilled with this. Chicken in Black Bean Sauce: Exciting? No. Good? Yes. Large tender pieces of chicken, black beans in every bite, onions and peppers for flavor and texture, and a black bean sauce that's fairly mild. Pacific Grove is our go to Chinese restaurant! Last year on New Years Eve we had the most amazing experience! We ordered our food, was given a pick up time and when we walked in they had a system in place by the last 4 digits of your cell phone number! If your last 4 digits started with a 4 they went to the 4 table...if it started with a 6, they went to the 6 table to retrieve your food. The food was hot and delicious and the entire experience was on point! This year we decided to order again for New Years! We placed our order early (11:45am) and was given a pick up time of 6:00pm! Ironically, over 50 others were also given the same pick up time! When we arrived, there was absolute chaos! There were over 50+ people inside the foyer area waiting for the last 4 digits of their cell to be called! No system in place, no organization, and most alarmingly ...no food in bags prepared and/or ready for customers at their designated pick up time! So many people Just waiting for a bag to come out of the kitchen and hoping they would call the last 4 digits of your cell! The restaurant was a fire hazard with everyone blocking the door and waiting patiently (hours) for their number to be called. Rumor has it that Pacific Grove is under new ownership! The new owner should have had a sit down and taken tips from the previous owners!! There were people standing there who had a pick up time of 4:30 and 5:00 who were still waiting at 6:00 when I arrived! Shockingly, The staff was continuing to answer phones and to take orders (which they had no business doing) when they couldn't even keep up with the orders they had! Pure Greed in my opinion especially given the fact that it was a cash only night so they were taking in $$ and not holding up to their end of the deal. The people around me out of the 50+ people all had pick up times ranging from 4:30-6:00 and not one of us received our order until after 7pm! I completely understand it is NYE and I expected some chaos but this was BEYOND disastrous, a fire hazard with all of the people crammed in, and the only way I ultimately received my order was because I asked them if they could check to see how much longer the wait would be after I had been waiting for an hour and fifteen minutes. I was going to cancel and order a pizza. The staff said the tickets in the back were piled up and out of order! Everyone was baffled as we were all reminiscing about the great NYE experience we had the previous year! Maybe they will see this review and change things for next year back to the way the previous owner slid thru NYE flawlessly OR maybe they will just ignore it and laugh all the way to the bank! Unfortunately the food quality was nothing like last year either! Last year the food was warm and delicious and this year the rice was ice cold and the apps were lukewarm! I gave Pacific Grove a glowing five-star review over ten years ago. However, I can barely give them a one-star review now. The restaurant changed management again a few years ago, and it has gone way downhill since. While their overpriced food is generally edible, everything else about Pacific Grove has steadily worsened. First, the atmosphere is dark, dingy and dirty. It seems like they haven't updated anything in over a decade. The bathrooms are old, messy and stinky. Sometimes it's the first thing you smell when you walk in the door. The management is rude and doesn't care about customer service. They let go good employees for petty or non-existent reasons. Moreover, they over-serve their "regulars" on a daily basis. Sitting with the usual barflies at the bar is like being in high school again. A bunch of inebriated old drunks hold court almost every night of the week while they drink themselves into oblivion. Pacific Grove was once a fun and friendly neighborhood Chinese food restaurant where everybody knew your name. Now it's a dingy, creepy, weird dive bar that happens to serve an occasional poopoo platter and white rice and where some of the waitstaff barely acknowledges your existence. Sadly, I have friends who have lived in town for 25 years who recently told me that they they are afraid of stepping foot in there over the past few years because of the rough-looking crowd that is always there. Went here today for a quick dinner. Got the combination special with chow mein, rice and an a few appetizers. The appetizers were fresh, the chow mein and rice were room temperature to cold. We informed the waitress about our food and she was very nice and said she would fix it. 5 minutes later, I get sent room temperature food again. I was so disappointed. I'm kicking myself for paying for this direct insult from this chef, but I felt bad for the waitress. I took it to go and threw it in the trash because I no longer trusted the food to even microwave it myself after such disrespect. I will NEVER eat at this restaurant ever again. But the night was spoiled by the KJ's, one who had 4 drinks before the first rotation was finished and her other half who didn't seem to care. Sat around for a half hour waiting even though the place was practically empty. Not many patrons? Not a promising sign. Except for what looked like a couple of regulars after a work day tossing back Whiskey Sours and Mai Tai's at the bar. The bill was kind of high for what I got, but that's probably the norm from now on, or until 2024. Got home. Sweet & Sour chicken...I thought I was biting into some Superballs you got for a quarter from a vending machine. Next! Kung Pao chicken...bland, no spice, all celery, stale peanuts, chewy dark meat. Next! Boneless spareribs...more like pork jerky. Flat dehydrated strips of meat drenched in 30 weight oil. Next! Crab Rangoons....undercooked wrappers, all cream cheese, no crab, maybe a few tiny chunks of imitation crabmeat, a.k.a., pollock, no scallions or spices. Next? This was our go to place for decades. Went yesterday for the first time in awhile. Extremely disappointed. Plate had a very large chip in it and sweet sauce bowl looked used. So I requested another and the server happened to have a bowl in his hand and said "ya, sure here". Again 1/2 filled and dripping over. Looked gross. Bathroom so tiny don't stand there waiting as you'll get hit by the door when someone comes in like I did. Two stalls and one locked so unusable. Makes me wonder if they have a larger bathroom for handicap people? I hope so. Back to food. Not sure what was inside the crab Rangoon but didn't taste normal and rice was just rice. The best place for Chinese food. I won't go anywhere else. Service is excellent and the food has plenty of fresh vegetables. The menu is varied so there is something for everyone's taste. I don't think COVID was kind to them. I'm really sorry to have to say it because I loved it at first, and it was our go-to since then, but we finally had to admit it - we're done with them. Went for lunch with my wife a couple of weeks back, was really looking forward to it. They sat us down without menus. It wasn't busy, but the waitress didn't come back to give us menus for five minutes. Menus delivered, she eventually returned to take our orders and we were ready. "I'd like the sushi lunch..." "No sushi." The sign on the wall still says sushi, so does the menu. I wanted to walk out at that point, but my wife wanted to stay. I ordered a general tso chicken and wasn't really impressed. All that could be a bad experience in a good place, right? What brought this down from 5 to one star was what my wife ordered. She picked the Tom Yum Soup. "Mushroom, okra, onion, shiitake, shrimp, basil, Tom yum Base." What she got had one shrimp, no detectable basil, no shiitake at all... but there were moldy tomatoes in it. She called it the worst soup she's ever had in her life. That was really the final straw. We won't be back. Original review: 7/23/2019 5.0 star rating Steve, the guy at the bar, is a trip. I had the 3 roll lunch $13, comes with soup. I ordered the miso. Steve had other recommendations. "That's not my specialty. I'll make it for you, but the best is the hot and sour or the wonton." I call Pacific Grove tonight for me and a girlfriend, at 9:35pm the call lasted two minutes (the store closes at 10) during that two minutes the lady answering the phones was not only disrespectful and rude but talking over me as I was apologizing for calling before close but all I wanted was a combination plate and small crab Rangoon. 14 minutes later as I'm getting out of my car as I was sitting giving them a little time to put it together as I work in the food industry, the lady on the phone was surely calling me back yelling at where I was as I explained I was walking in I realized people sitting down in the restaurant, I understand they close at 10, but if there's people sitting eating & drinking at the bar that's just or acceptable for them to be rushing me that way. Went there for a lunch today 03/04/22. The menu wasn't cheap at all for Asian cuisine but the most interesting part started when I got the bill. From the menu, I remembered that wonton soup was 3$ and crispy beef 12.50$ But the receipt they brought was nearly 20$ (19.74$). I took the menu again and double-checked the prices and yes, what I've remembered was correct. Then I tried to take a look at the itemized receipt but it was fastened with a stapler with another piece of paper which has completely overlapped the itemized receipt. Then I just ripped it out and checked the prices. The soup was 3.50$ and the beef 14.50$. When I asked the waiter why so, he took me to the lobby and showed me a piece of paper among the other pieces with a printed message "due to increased price Bla-Bla-Bla prices are subject to change without further notice..." I'd say that is a pretty dirty way to treat the customers and that definitely was my first and last time there! And about food: wonton soup was not bad but the beef was waaaay too sweet. The general gau chicken is good but if you want to feel some heat you better order it extra spicy. The chicken fingers are tender and large and have never come out over cooked (which is a pet peeve of mine). The beef teriyaki is made with the red spare rib sauce. They also come out tender and delicious every time. Basically its solid, consistent and I like the food. I do have a criticism about the front desk. Its set up in a way where you can see all the trash and disorganization behind the cashier and the bar. Its unsightly and uninviting. read more

So I will start off with the good first. I really love their sushi, it's always fresh, and I enjoy their special maki. We ordered a few different sushi rolls along with your basic fare, pu pu platter for 2, pork fried rice, and pad thai. So for one thing, the rice had an off taste, almost like bad oil, and it was VERY greasy. Like they tossed some old rice in a wok and added some oil....not good period. The pad thai was terrible, probably the worst thing I've eaten in awhile lol. When my mum dumped it out of the container and into a serving bowl it came out in one ugly clump.... It consisted of over cooked noodles in a non existent sauce and some really shitty rubbery shrimp. There was no cabbage, no bean sprouts, no peanuts, etc. Like the most ghetto rendition of the dish you could possibly get.... WOW. I went in for lunch with a friend, I ordered a tuna roll and my friend ordered garlic shrimp off the lunch menu. We get our food.. I take a bite of the tuna roll, and there's wasabi IN the roll.. it never said in the menu it had that, and I couldn't eat it. I politely told the server "i'm sorry, this has wasabi in it, I cannot eat this, it was never stated on the menu" He then says "well what do you want me to do?" I suggest he take it off our bill since it's unheard of wasabi comes part of a sushi roll. He then said "no, I cannot do that". Ok, no problem, I think I can swing $7.. We get our bill, and the shrimp was stated on the menu as $8, but on our bill it's $15. ok, I can deal with $7, but now we're up to getting screwed for $14? No, I'm sorry, I'm not ok with that. We bring it up to the waiter and he just responded with an attitude and brings out a completely different menu to us to show us the $15... we ordered off the LUNCH menu, but he charged us for dinner, and refused to change that as well. We asked for the manager, and to which he replied "there's no manager". We paid the bill, but I'm absolutely appalled at the snide attitude and down right stealing this restaurant and staff demonstrated. Please, save yourself the hassle and skip this place! read more
