Worse Chinese food I have had in a very long time. The chicken wings were previously frozen, the meat was almost impossible to chew. The bones were black which tells me they were frozen for a very long time. The hot and sour soup was thickened with something that reminded me of wallpaper paste. Long and enticing menu, both Chinese and (supposedly) Japanese dishes. Did not live up to the promises made on that menu. Appetizers: crab Rangoon, good, but not to justify $2 each. Philadelphis Maki: good. Shumai, standard. Shrimp tempera: greasy. Spider Maki: at $13.50, hard time finding the bits of soft shell crab. Mains: orange chicken, OK, run of the mill. Had to order rice extra, at $4 for a small container. Maguro (seared tuna in wild mushroom sauce) disappointing: sauce was hot (not advertised and atypical for Japanese cooking). The 'wild mushrooms' were canned straw mushrooms. Total bill $128 for a disappointing dinner. There are many Chinese and Japanese restaurants in this area that do better for less cost. read more

During this crisis COVID-19 Its been so hard on small businesses. We called in an order on General GAO, Chicken Bean Sprouts rice, Pu-Pu platter for two and extra orders of crab Rangoon and Beef teriyaki . The food taste so fresh the bean sprouts have this fresh crunch it's perfect. The chicken in the rice was the best I have ever had. There are so many things to like about Shunju! First, Jason and Hector are genuinely concerned about providing the best possible experience. If you want it and they can make it, anything is possible! Tip: Ask for a saketini or a Ninja Turtle at the bar... you'll want another, as long as you have a DD. :) Second, the food -- especially the sushi -- is top notch. Some of the things we order regularly are: Spicy Edamame (ask for spicy) Avocado Ball (with tuna or salmon -- simply amazing!) Crispy Pad Thai Basil Chicken I can honestly say we've never had anything we didn't like here, and if there was something not to our liking they cheerfully would have made something else. The bar was expanded last year to add more seating, which helps avoid having to wait for a seat in that popular area. Some of the comments mention slow delivery, but we've always eaten inside the restaurant so I cannot comment on that issue. Stopped in for a quick lunch and found myself leaving very satisfied! The food is yummy and fresh, unlike some other chinese restaurants that leave you feeling like your swimming in a bowl of salt and MSG. Was very impressed by the lunch portions! The wontons in the wonton soup are awesome, I only wish they were a little bigger (or had been given a couple more). The waitress was super nice (only messed up one of our sides). I stopped in for lunch today. There were two people sitting at the bar and the rest of the place was empty. The woman behind the bar asked me if I was there to pick up take out. I said no, that I was there to sit down and have lunch. She seemed anoyed, waved her hand to the dining area and told me to 'sit'. I found a table by the window, and she came over with a menu. I said thank you when she plopped it in front of me, and she neither looked at me nor said your welcome..... or anything else. She just walked away. She never asked if I wanted a drink. After about 5 minutes, I got up to look for her to take my order. She said, 'Oh you are ready to order?' I said yes. I chose an item that came with a few choices, she never asked which choices I wanted. I told her a few things, and she walked away. The miso soup was very good, as was the spicy maki roll. The lunch dish with a lemon-chicken was not as good. The crab rangoon pieces were awful, unlike any I had ever had....dry and tasteless.... there was a small bowl of rice that was very dark brown (looked like pork fried rice) but I would rather have had white rice. The rice was very dark and greasey.... not good at all. The woman dropped off my food, never asked me if everything was fine, or if I needed anything else. I refilled my own water glass because she was not in sight for quite a bit of time. Each time she came to the table, she didn't make eye contact and appeared really annoyed that she had to serve me. The experience was dreadful. A couple of people came in to pick up take out food while I was there. They addressed the woman as 'Cindy', and I got the impression that she might be the owner. What a shame if she was! I won't return, and I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

So, we're in the middle of Covid and dying for Chinese, ironic. We picked up some food and it wasn't great. I think it had been sitting for a very long time. The fried rice was super dark and shriveled, wings were overcooked and dry. Thin rice noodles were actually good, they must have been made to order when we called. One bag, 70.00. Went to this restaurant based on yelps 4 star review average and man was I disappointed. For prime lunchtime, it was very slow and the server was particularly unfriendly. The dining room was unclean throughout, there were flies that would continuously bother you(they were also crawling on the water pitcher used to refill your water glass...gross!)and there was dust/cobwebs all over. After taking what seemed like forever to take our order(we were the only ones in the dining room!)I quickly realized why the place was almost empty aside from the flies and bar patrons. The spare ribs were the best item on the plate. The chicken wings were deep fried and greasy, the PF rice was overcooked, the fried shrimp was hard and overcooked, the chicken fingers were actually good and the egg drop soup was fair. I was really hoping for a better experience, but unfortunately my 1st impression was not a good one so I won't be coming back. To the business owner...If you want your business to survive, please clean your restaurant, get some flytrap lights and do a better job with your food quality! read more

I am from out of town here for work. We got off work at 9:00 pm and looking for good food. The website states the restaurant said they were open until 11:30. Called and they said they close the kitchen at 10:30. We got there before that time and they made it clear they didn't want us there. That they wanted to close. We felt uncomfortable and left. As soon as we walked out the door, the lights where turned off and the door was locked. We would have respected if they wanted to close early but when they said they were still open, we made the trip. If you are out from out of town, I suggest another venue. read more

We moved to North Andover last year and ended up ordering from Shunju by chance as it was the first place to come up in a quick Google search. Located at the end of a little plaza on 114 it is easy to miss; but we sure are glad we found it! The staff is incredibly friendly, the delivery is timely and the food can't be beat. We have ordered from them countless times this past year and have not had a single bad experience. Some of our go to favorites are: The house fried rice: a delicious blend of veggies, chicken and shrimp... not covered in soy sauce like most other fried rice dishes you'll find. The steamed dumplings: a perfect blend of flavors and texture The orange chicken: fragrant and delightful The crab rangoon: a beautiful romance of filling and succulent scallion... some of the best I've ever had. Craving Chinese food but had not tried any places near my new place yet. Picked this place sight unseen. Ordered moo shu pork and spring rolls for take out while on my there from work. First off the tiny shopping plaza they're in looks cute from afar but a close view shows cracked windows, old cobwebs, rusted nails etc. Needs work. Anyway, walk into Shunju and right away see filthy doors and a entry hall and a second set of filthy doors. Just looked like years of grimy hands. Blech. Coulda a few magic erasers. Inside is outdated with a dingy feeling. Another blech but my food was ready and the bag was hot so home I went. Spring rolls were a good size and nice and crispy! I'm a moo shu freak so am quite picky but this was pretty good! Came with fresh sauces in containers instead of packets which is always a bonus. And a healthy portion of moo shu as well. So I'd be willing to try there again but will never eat inside cause ya know....blech read more

We went here today and order only sushi. We selected the Crab Rangoon, the Tuna & Salmon rolls and Naruto rolls. They were good. It great. The best flavor was the Crab Rangoon roll. They provided large portions of Ginger and Wasabi. The service was quick but we have had better sushi. The food was fresh, just not the flavorful. My very first Yelp review was Haru. Haru's gone and in it's place is Shunju. Is this a good thing. Yes it is. Finally good Japanese food in N. Andover. But don't get me wrong this is both a Chinese and a Japanese restaurant. Some minor remodeling, a reopened sushi bar, two HD TVs (finally in HD) & some nice lighting have changed the appearance of this location just enough to know this is not the old Haru. Opened just three weeks now, I have found myself here three times. Each time trying something different and never disappointed. The menu seems to be equally dedicating itself to both the Chinese & Japanese items. Large portions, really good Maki rolls. Everything I've tried here seems super fresh. Strong drinks, very friendly staff and very reasonable prices make this a must check out new restaurant. I would say you could actually consider Shunju for a romantic dinner, but don't be a afraid to bring the family either. They are located at the end of the Jasmine plaza just before Stop and Shop (behind Dunkin Donuts) heading east or just after if heading west. Before I discuss my reason for the 1 star, I'd like to preface with the fact that I eat a LOT of asian foods. I grew up near NYC so going to chinatown in NYC was frequent. I've lived in the Medford/somerville area for a few years and just moved to Andover. Reading the reviews here I expected something pretty decent. Here is what I ordered: Tempura Red Snapper with Spicy Red Curry Sauce; 0 stars The red snapper was over cooked, dried out completely. The breading was soggy and thick. The red curry sauce was straight out of a can or package. It's listed on the menu as the chef's specialty. Is the specialty opening cans? I'm sorry, but it was horrible and tasted way too tangy like ketchup. EXTREMELY overpowering and every bite was just a lot of ketchup tang. If you're going to use canned or packaged curry, you need to invest in at least Mae Ploy brand. Seriously. Peppery Crispy Shrimp; 1 star Let's talk about this. Another item listed under the chef's specialties. The name says Crispy. Was mine crispy? Nope. Breaded heavily and soggy. There was barely any seasoning on the bread so it tasted like a mouth full of rubbery wet flour and egg. Was the shrimp jumbo? Absolutely not, they used 21/25 shrimp. What this means is that 21-25 shrimp go into a pound. This is NOT jumbo shrimp. Jumbo shrimp would roughly be 12-15 to a pound. Also overcooked and extremely chewy. Saki Yuna-Yaki; 2 stars This was at least edible. We ordered it with the ginger & scallions sauce. It was mild in flavor, with an overpowering amount of shiitake mushroom flavor to it. Had they have used less of that, and keep the subtle ginger flavor to the sauce, this might be better. Oh and use fresh Salmon, not frozen. You provide sushi, so I don't understand this one. I suppose cost-saving is better than kitchen pride. Since moving to Andover, I'm struggling to find quality food that you'd find closer to the city, which is to be expected. What I find more shocking than anything is all the raving reviews I find on Yelp from people in the Andover area on some of these restaurants. I'm sorry Andover folks, but your palates are WAY off. read more

This review is based on their lunch / take out only. I had done 3-4 take outs from them since knowing about them. They are local and less the quarter mile away from where i am yet we have not tried them for dinner. We really never heard any talk or chatter about this place but it has been here for a while so obviously they are going good business and people are def eating or doing take out from there. i normally like to get Chinese chicken curry and rice from them when i really want some Chinese food and want to eat at home and not drive too far. chicken curry is pretty nice but it is little bland compared to other places i have eaten. The curry spice (not indian curry spice, chinese curry is bit different) is on the less side in the dish and they need to put a little bit more to get that flavor otherwise in current state it like bland with some curry taste so it is like you are stuck in middle. other than that lunch special came with spring roll and rice. if you dine in you will get soup for lunch too. overall it is a decent place for a lazy Chinese food day. will update once i have tried other places read more

The sushi was good, however, the miso soup was terrible. Miso soup is always a very important part of my sushi experience. The place was also completely empty, we were the only ones there. Its also kind of expensive for the type of place it is, nothing fancy. The service was very good, our waiter was the nicest lady EVER,and overall I had a good experience. But would I go back? Tried this place & their delivery for the first time. We were originally told that the order would take 40-50 minutes. After an hour we got a little upset. 20 minutes after calling we finally got the order. We then opened the bag (after the driver left) and we were missing one of the items. We called and they refunded part of what we paid but in order to get a better refund than the couple of bucks for the item they forgot to bring but for the poor customer service as well it took too much cajoling. It was the owner I was speaking to too. My suggestion -- try someplace else. read more

I've been to Shunju twice, and the second time I had to be dragged unwillingly. To say the food is underwhelming would somehow be an understatement. As an example, I will give you this: fried shrimp was 80% batter, most of which was raw. Out of the group of 10 people I was with, 2 people said their food was good, and they got sushi, so I will allow two stars for the sushi, and the remaining zero stars are for anything that's not sushi. SHUNJU is a hidden gem. The food is fantastic, everything is fresh and delicious. The staff is exceptional and the prices are perfect. I reas through all the previous reviews and was surprised to see some negative comments. I have been here at least a dozen times in the past year and everything has been exceptional every time. By far the TOP resteraunt for this type of food. I have been telling everyone to check it out and decided for themself if they have had better food or service. I've been spreading the word for this place to as many people who inquire about a Chinese restaurant. I did enjoy it a lot the first time I came to this place. The second time I came, the host was very polite, and accommodating. The reason for 3 stars this time. My orange chicken came out with the wrong sides, and the orange chicken didn't seem to have much chicken...but still had the same amount of mass one would expect chicken would comprise of in orange chicken. It seemed, and this is just a description, that the lumps of whatever I was eating had the texture that of tofu, or something squishy...it just wasn't chicken. There were some bits of chicken here and there, but not all. One person who was with me had a similar experience with her chicken meal. This is very disappointing, as the sides were really good, even though they were not what I ordered. On a positive note, they do a great job with their sushi. I've never had the sushi but my go-tos are always the wonton soup (honestly the best I've had), house fried rice, gen. gao's chicken, & pepper steak. Pretty average Asian restaurant. I've been there for lunch several times during the work week and it's been consistently just okay. The lunch specials are a good value, and overall prices are reasonable. I would recommend the sushi over the Chinese food. Sushi is not special, but pretty good. The fried rice is bad. Dark, dry, can't really find any veggies or meat in it. The quality of the meat in the beef and chicken dishes seems pretty unimpressive. Go if you need a quick, cheap lunch. read more
