My coworkers and I were here for dinner on a Thursday night after work. We didn't really have expectations, just looking for food. Surprisingly this place was pretty busy and lively. We were a group of 6 people and were seated right away. They have an extensive menu for food and drinks. Everything is Japanese with some Peruvian flavours. For drinks half of us tried the fruit juices, made fresh. The other half opted for beer. The fruit juice was more like a smoothie. It was incredible and I would have definitely ordered more if I weren't full. It came in a strawberry and a pineapple flavour. I got the strawberry-ginger and it was very refreshing. For appetizers we got vegetable tempura, a shrimp wrapped in plantain tempura, and a chicken avocado tart of some sort. The veg tempura were meh but the rest of the appetizers were phenomenal. Especially the shrimp wrapped in plantain! For mains, some of us got seafood soba noodles, sushi and a fish dish. The food was pretty unique. The soba noodles did not look like soba, I think they used regular ramen noodles instead. However the sauce and seafood flavours were such a hit! Great find in Lawrence! Overall great experience. First time visit, I tried this Ica Roll and realized they used imitation crab instead of King Crab as the description. I did bring this to our waitress attention and she first argued with me that it's supposed to be imitation crab not the real crab. I explained to her the reason why I ordered this dish in the first place was because I wanted to eat King Crab not imitation crab. The description was misleading and it should be fixed. I've eaten here quite a bit and I always get the same thing because it's so good! We get the lomo saltado and chicken yakisoba. The only thing is sometimes it's a hit or miss on how salty the food is which is the only downside. I've tried the ceviche (it was nice and fresh), empanadas (kind of tiny, but flavorful), and ripe fried plantains (hard to mess this one up) Overall, pretty good place, no clue about the sushi though. read more

Although the food and drinks were amazing, we were charged a $38.00 fee for the kitchen staff. What the heck is that all about? Our bill was around $200.00. I asked the waitress what that was all about But she couldn't really explain it. She said I could take that into consideration when I was to tip her. Of course I gave her personally 20% for a tip. My best friend and I visited last night at 7:30 and had a great time. There is designated Japú parking in front of the building so we didn't have to search for a spot. Our server was sweet and spoke both English and Spanish. There weren't many people but it was a Wednesday so I wasn't surprised. My friend ordered the maracuya sour cocktail and ceviche, I had the lomo saltado and the strawberry/ginger lemon juice, and we shared the chicken causa. We loved everything!! Both drinks were so delicious - the sour was strong and sweet, and the lemon juice was refreshing (pricey but worth it). I didn't try the ceviche (my friend raved) but I loved the lomo saltado. Big portions so I had leftovers, the fries were perfectly crisp and salty, the rice was well-seasoned, and the steak was awesome! Juicy and the sauce was yummy. The chicken causa was different than something I'd normally try but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the flavors went together. Definitely branch out with your choices here, you will not be disappointed! read more

Our expectations for Japú were low. We'd been looking for a different restaurant we couldn't find when we saw the inviting outdoor tables at Japú. We shrugged and went in to be told the patio was closed. We sighed and decided just to fuel up. Our friendly server Genesis gave us an overview of the menu, and we were intrigued. Japanese and Peruvian food? OK. I wish we'd been more hungry and more adventurous, but we had the gyoza and the chaufa rice, and both were really very good. Interesting flavors, fresh ingredients. Someone asked would I like avocado with my fried rice--a question that never occurred in my wildest dreams, but shame on everybody who never asked it and on me for never thinking it. Fresh avocado with chicken fried rice IS A THING! Try it. Unfortunately, we don't have much reason to go to Lawrence very often, but we'll go back to Japú when we do! read more

Thought this would be a good fusion place to try out. Food was pretty good, if it wasn't for the service I would give it a four star. Found some extra string or fiber material in my fries (clearly it was some cleaning cloth from their kitchen) and the waitress said it's seasoning. I know what's seasoning and what doesn't belong in my food especially I found it in the kids meal. If they apologize rather then coming back with some lame excuse I would definitely go back. However rather then admitting their fault but with some lame excuse then no thank you I'll take my business some where else. I ordered the meal for my kids and I hope they would not make this mistake for another kids meal. There is limited choice for sushi and all you will find is maybe 5-6 special sushi rolls. Japu is a legit go to place to get Peruvian food. I have really not had Peruvian food like this outside of peru, (maybe some places in Queens NY). The place is very casual, but still with nice enough ambiance that you could go there on a date. Prices are very good and portions are out of this world. Food and drinks are very tasty and everything tasted natural, no weird mixers or fake seasonings. We had the passion fruit pisco, virgen piña colada and pineapple ginger mint juice, everything was yummy and tasted natural. I would prefer to have the pisco drink in a glass on the rocks instead, it was STRONG. For food we had a fish ceviche, maduro tempura, chaufa with chicken, and sushi. The Sushi i could pass on, it wasn't awesome, but the rest of it all was magnificent. I can't wait to be back to try more things! read more

I can't believe that I have been coming to this place since it opened and have never written a review for it! A group of us (4) went on a Friday night and were quickly seated. We did not make reservations and I really appreciated the short wait to be seated. The restaurant is on the first floor of an old mill building, the décor is exposed brick and a more rustic look. My to go order is the chicken yakisoba and the Iquitos roll. We also ordered the ceviche, Sapporo roll , and the empanadas. I also ordered the chicharron drink which is Peruvian Chicha Morada. The service is always great and the server often came around to make sure that we were all set. Overall, as always, a great experience at Japu. read more

This place hyped when it first opened. Honestly, not my type of food. Everything is VERY carb heavy. The "sushi" rolls are thick. I the steak plate that came with an egg, rice and fries. The rice and fries portion was huge. I appreciate the large portion but everything is so heavily seasoned including the rice and egg. With the singular fried egg, I easily finished a whole bowl of rice which is filling but not balanced with the rest of the meal. In our first visit I ordered the Lomo and my husband ordered the ceviche mixto. We started w beef empanadas and two Cusqueña beers. I We absolutely loved the food!!! My mom moved to Lawrence sic months ago and we visit frequently. We had a list of Latino places to eat and by far this place is the best. The sauce that accompanied the empanadas was heavenly while unnecessary as the empanadas were astonishingly good. The lomo steak was cut in perfect slices and mixed w veggies and an exquisite sauce. The homemade fries were fluffy and I skipped the ketchup to use the sauce for the fries. The rice was not my favorite as I am picky w rice. Overall, loved the place and will come back. I came here with family a few days ago. We were very excited about the concept - Peruvian cuisine paired with sushi. Loved the atmosphere of the place - easy parking on the side, beautiful brick building, lit up interior...But we were ultimately disappointed by the food and the service. If I was to choose one word to describe this place, I would say "cheap". If you're getting water, specify "tap water". We made the mistake of not doing so and were charged $2 a glass...I have NEVER been to any restaurant before which has charged me for water...Soda was $2.50 or so, and tea was $1.50. Just something to keep in mind. When someone at my table asked for some hot sauce, they complied but brought over about 1/2 a teaspoon's worth of it. Furthermore, they kept the sushi menu on one of those little table menu holders. AS we were looking at it, the waitress comes over and returns it to the side of the table. She did this twice...I understand the need to keep the place organized and neat, but this is completely inappropriate and bothersome. As for the food. I ordered the Lomo a lo Pobre ($14), which was steak tips served with fries, rice, and a fried egg topped with onions. I enjoyed the food, although many at my table could not say the same. One person got the Margarita Fish ($16) which was mainly rice with very little seafood, which I suppose makes sense for the price. Those in my party enjoyed the sushi rolls though. Overall, the food was probably 3-4 stars, but we found the service to be...pretty bad. Though I wanted to love this place, we will not be coming here again. read more

I've ordered from here a couple times on Ubereats before actually going in. The food is good and abundance for the price they ask. The lomo saltado is sooo good and tasty. The steak prices are better then I've had at other Peruvian places but it's juicy. I would've given 5 stars because the apps were good and fairly priced and everything else was good, the only thing that was somewhat disappointing was the ceviche. We ordered a ceviche mixto which is fish and shrimp. The dish had more onions then seafood.And the ratio between the shrimp and fish was sad. Was hardly any fish and probably 10 shrimp. Don't let that take away from everything else though the brownie dessert was deliciously done. Omg the drinks alcoholic and regular!! My favorite is the pineapple ginger mint limeade. We had a very nice lunch. The service was just okay. Perhaps they are a little understaffed, I know it's hard to hire people right now. We loved the food! Big servings too. The only thing was, an automatic 18% 'service charge' was added to our bill and there were only two of us. My first visit at this restaurant was last night. My server was excellent. She answered all our questions. The food is excellent the sushi appetizer was delicious as well as the empanada de pollo (chicken). My meal was also very good I had the Seafood Yakisoba. I was there with my brother who ordered the Aji de Gallina he said it was also delicious. My daughter had the Mar y Tierra she really enjoyed it the steak was cooked well. Very good portions well worth it. What is also great is the atmosphere here. The have great music and not too loud you can actually hear one another. I'm so glad we decided to come here. We came here on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, so that probably impacted our experience, but we were generally disappointed. The restaurant was empty of patrons when we arrived at 6:30pm; they were out of all but 2 of the sushi rolls, and of a few other things on the Peruvian side-- waitress said it was because they were going on vacation the next day. This of course limited out options so perhaps we should not have stayed. We had the Chicken Causa appetizer, which we thought was delicious. With respect to drinks, my Mai Tai was disappointing and not very fruity or with much flavor; the Pisco Sour was excellent. We both ordered the Chaufa; one steak and one mixto. Both were heaps of rice with little in the way of vegetables; the steak on both was tough, chewy, and tasteless; the Chaufa Mixto had 4 shrimp, which were fine; and very sparse tiny nuggets of chicken-- so both dishes consisted mainly of a large mound of rice with a bit of protein. The server was generally inattentive, despite the restaurant being largely empty when we were there; with the staff more interested in animatedly chatting with a friend that had popped in. We may well have caught them on an off-night, but perhaps it would have been better they had not opened that evening. It certainly turned us off from going back; if we're going to spend $140+ on an appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks with tip, we will do it elsewhere. read more
