I love the food (WHEN THEY ARE OPEN) but I can't take anymore if being let down. It seems like they open when and if they want. 3 times now I have came and they were close. While staying in the area, we found this little gem here on Yelp. When we arrived, the place was empty. Good thing, there is a small dinning room for eating in & parking seems like it could be a problem (hard to say, it was dark). The staff was very friendly and helpful to make suggestions. My wife is not an adventurous eater, so talking her into new things can be difficult. We had the coconut soup, pineapple chicken stir fry & massaman curry. The food is GOOD, but it was EXPENSIVE. We ordered the drunken noodles, yellow curry, the red wings, and the crab rangoon. The crab rangoon was amazing- especially the dipping sauce it comes with. The red wings were alright, definitely good but not the best flavor for me. The yellow curry was incredible; the perfect amount of sweet, tons of chicken, pineapple chunks! The drunken noodle had tons of flavor and the noodles were amazing but it was sooooooo spicy. I couldn't even eat half it was so spicy.. I've eaten at most Thai places throughout eastern MA and the Providence area and this is THE BEST THAI FOOD I've ever had. Every dish has a unique spin and tons of flavor. Everything is so fresh, a true ma and pop place that takes Thai to the next level. So far I've had the spicy crab Rangoon- amazing and crispy af- the pad see ew- delicious with a homemade taste, and the spicy noodle dish that was out of this world. My all time favorite though is the tom yum noodle soup- an authentic Thai dish that's not easy to find, and made to the T. The dishes also usually yield 2-3 servings. My boyfriend and I took a spring trip to Salem, and we stopped at Red Sugar for takeout dinner. We ordered Massaman Curry (chicken) and Pad Thai. We were a bit skeptical because Red Sugar had fewer reviews than the other Thai restaurants in the area. Well, we were wrong. We stepped into this cute dinner establishment that had a warm and pleasant ambience. You could smell and see the food being cooked by the chef as we picked up our order, and it looked and smelled delicious! When we got home and unwrapped the food, the portions were generous. We began eating, and immediately knew we were in for a treat. It's hard for us to find Thai food that's similar to the food back home in California, but Red Sugar felt like a California Thai meal. The ingredients were fresh, the entrees were rich but not too heavy, and the flavors were right on point. In fact, we both agreed this is the best Thai we have had in New England. This is a special Thai restaurant. It's not the closest Thai place to our house (or the second or third), but I'll gladly drive out of my way for their food. The Basil Udon is my favorite. I even ate it the night before I went into labor, extra spicy! My husband loves the Pad Thai, not spicy. Their dishes are always full of fresh vegetables and their chicken is really good and doesn't taste frozen (I'm picky about this). Food is delicious here. Absolutely delicious. But the thing that always makes me come back is the owner and chef. She is so sweet and kind. My family used to go here at least once a month before the teens left for college and she remembered us every time and remembered our orders every time. Guess we need to switch it up more haha. I was torn between giving this place a 4 or a 5 review, but decided on 5 because not only was the food great, but it was a great value as well. I am lucky to live very close to 3 Thai places, all within a couple miles of my home. Red Sugar is the newest addition to that list, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It's a tiny place that looks more like a take out sushi restaurant that's not meant for dining in, as there are only 5 or 6 tables. The menu is a double sided 8.5"x11" laminated sheet of paper with a nice selection of Thai offerings and even a selection of Vietnamese Pho. This contrasts sharply to the Duck Walk down the street, whose menu is encyclopedic in comparison. After eating, I didn't miss the extra pages though. For appetizers, we started with the tom yung soup and the "spicy rangoon". The tom yung was delicious; great flavor and not as watery as some Thai places. The spicy rangoon were good too.. A little twist on the standard crab rangoon you see at every chinese restaurant, with mild spices thrown in. It gave them a nice zing without being very hot. I ordered the pad thai because it's a staple of my thai diet. It was very good, but not spicy enough for my taste. Next time I will ask them to spice it up! My dining companion had the drunken noodles which were also very good. There is no alcohol served, but they do allow BYOB. They serve a nice hot Thai tea gratis with the meal, though. Red Sugar Cafe is hidden a few blocks away from the main drag of Wakefield Center, but it might be the best restaurant in town. The Thai food that they serve here is the best that I've had in New England. I've had the drunken noodle and spicy chicken basil dishes and both were excellent. The ingredients are very fresh, the presentation is tasteful, and the dining room is cozy and never too busy. This place has a family-run vibe to it and the food is cooked behind the counter in the same space as the dining area. The woman who runs the register and waits tables was very friendly. You can bring your own beer and wine, which is a really nice plus. The prices are very affordable (lunch specials are $9-10; dinner specials $11-12; entrees in the $12-18 range). read more

Only a handful of tables - approximately 8 - and a tight fit all around. But....service was fast and reliable and the food was fantastic. We shared an order of spicy chilli wings, and they were wonderfully seasoned, crispy, and cooked perfectly. We then shared two entrees: an order of pad thai and a spicy rice dish (with chicken and shrimp and an assortment of veggies); note the latter was seasoned with sriracha and carried with it just the right amount of heat. The best way to judge a Thai place is by their Tom yam. It was bad. Nothing but chunks of chicken, onions and a pea-not peas, but a pea. I know Tom yam to have kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lemon grass, mushroom, tomatoes etc- a bit more hearty. If I wanted just the watery soup I think I would've gotten better at Trader Joe's, or simply adding Tom yam paste to water and coconut milk! No bueno...I am Asian and I know the balance of Thai food, there wAsnt a good balance of spice or sour. If you must eat here, do take out. Love this place here's why: We called to order food, no confusion, a quick call, and we were on our way! When we arrived it smelled delicious from the outside and even better inside. So we picked up our food and brought it home. We had the vegetable rolls, the chicken wings, drunken noodles, and tangerine chicken. All were excellent. The only thing is pretty much everything is spicy and I mean SPICY! With the exception of the vegetable rolls. I also wish they gave us more white rice as that helped keep the spicy in check! Just had lunch at Red Sugar. We loved it! Staff was extremely friendly and efficient, place was very clean and the food was AMAZING! We had Pad Thai and Basil Fried Rice and each dish came with Crab Rangoon. The portions were large but not overwhelming, I finished my rice and my wife had about 1/3 of her Pad Thai left. After reading a bunch of reviews, I tried the Garlic Udon noodles. It was delicious and it may be my new regular thing. There is plenty of everything so you do not feel like someone parked you in front of a big noodle mess. In fact, there was so much chicken and vegetables in it that I went diving to make sure it was on top of some noodles. The noodles were flavorful without being soggy. Overall this was delicious and a pleasant break from the Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles of the world, the pan fried noodles and abundant chicken and vegetables really make the dish. read more

Some of the best Thai food around. My boyfriend and I go out for Thai a lot and this place is always on the top of our list. We found it by a happy accident and I am so glad we did. I have a gluten allergy which means I eat a LOT of rice noodles and Red Sugar was more than happy to walk through each ingredient on their menu to make sure I could eat what I wanted. Friendly service (big smiles and nice greetings) and excellent food. My hubby says the wings are the best he's ever had! I sometimes order a couple of appetizers as my meal because I like them all so much (Thai tapas anyone?). The duck dishes are splendid and they will cook your dish with the amount of spiciness you request. BYOB (wine or beer) is a nice cost savings too! read more
