*update: I looked back on the flyer I saw for the event and it actually does NOT specify there would only be 3 options for dinner so like I previously said we would not have done the event if we had known that My friends and I have been dying to try this place for awhile so we did the psychic dinner event and was totally underwhelmed. First of all we had no idea it would be a limited menu otherwise we would not have done it because the options were not that good but we tacked on some extras which ended up costing a fortune and honestly the only think worth it were those manchego cheese bites in a honey glaze. For the event tho, we split the brussel sprouts which were nothing special, chicken empanada and potato croquettes-those croquettes were amazing, very tasty and not dry at all like most croquettes I've had in the past. For the entree we got two of the chickens and one of the shrimps-both dishes lacked any flavor at all and was literally just shrimp on a plate-not sure if normal dinner would come with anything tho? The side options were saffron rice, potato chips and veggies. The chips were literally a bag of kettle chips dumped on a plate and the veggies were string beans which I don't like. Rice was ok but again lacking flavor. For dessert we got the pistachio cake and that was actually good but honestly for the price this place isn't worth it. I attended The Paella and Sangria event Sangria 71 holds each year at the beach in St James. I realized that after I had made the reservations that their paella is cooked in large vats on site and that my bell pepper allergy was going to be a problem. the tickets were non refundable and $90 to boot, so I tried to call the restaurant to ask if they would be able to bring me a salad the day of so I could have something to eat. I hate to even tell this part as this review is definitely positive, but I left 3 separate messages with 3 separate hostesses who answered the phone. I told them I wasnt looking for a special plate of paella, but would like to know if they could bring me a salad or something so I could eat while I was there. Each told me they would have the manager call me back and no one ever did. Fast forward to the day of the event and I went up to the chefs who were prepping the paella and asked again about a salad. A very nice man named Rosendo (Chef? Manager?) said they had gotten the messages but in each case were told I was looking for a separate dish of paella, which was not the case. Again someone could have called me back, but water under the bridge now. Rosendo was so apologetic and offered to send someone to the restaurant to get me something for lunch. He told me to pick anything off the menu and instructed me as to what used their sofrito which incudes peppers. I told him honestly a salad would be fine, but he insisted and I ordered a chicken dish, Pollo a la Sangria which was absolutely delicious! At the end of the day I understand that people make mistakes, BUT it is how they correct those mistakes that stay with you. Sangria 71 and I got off to a rocky start, but Rosendo to the rescue really made it all good. Very good. The lunch specials are always a great deal- although smaller portion sizes but won't break the bank. Order the shell steak for lunch at a slight extra charge and got the salmon in orange lemon sauce for lunch - steak cooked to perfection and salmon tender and moist. Even the sides were delish- sautéed string beans and the fresh sliced fried potatoes that you couldn't stop eating! We've had dinner there add well and it's delicious and elegant too! read more

Third time here and I keep going back ( but I won't again) because my friends like it. The food is never very good. It's expensive so I expect very good and it's not, it's just good ...so many other better places around. The grilled octopus is a mainstay tapas choice and it's bland and dry ... the green sauce was bland as well-go to Casa Luis down the block for much better! Four of us, two couples specifically went to Sangria 71 on Thursday for their Lobster Specials. We anticipated getting freshly prepared Steamed Lobsters as they were touting the special on Facebook et. al. We ordered cocktails, appys which were fine and then our mains consisted of 4 two pound Steamed Lobsters. All was fine with the drinks and appys but when the lobsters arrived they were not what we expected. They were dry, had no tamale and looked like they hadnt seen steam or water in quite awhile. They were dry and not appetizing...looked like they were prepared in advance of our order. When queried, our server suggested we speak to the manager and we agreed. The manager was dismissive on our plight. When we showed him the lobsters his comeback was "they are MAINE lOBSTERS and they were alive when cooked". When asked when they were cooked he reminded us they were Maine Lobsters?? like we never had a lobster from maine before. He said there was nothing he could do and backed away from the table and left. This left a bitter taste in our group and we were not only disappointed but vowed never to return. We know what freshly steamed lobsters look and taste like and these denizens of the deep did not fit the model! We have dined at Sangria 71 before and never had any problems... its a shame that their customer service was lacking during our dinner last evening! Frankly, I would have given them 2 stars but this is an isolated instance and I didnt want their average to suffer due to this. So that's a no no. The shrimp was good but I expected bigger and fresher. Now the bad - the rest of it. The rice was one of the worst things I've tasted. Dry, flavorless, and undercooked. It was orange in color and that's it, like straight out of a box. Gross. The bread - old, stale. The potatoes could've been seasoned and half of them undercooked and the sauce it came with, diluted salsa. I don't know how business allow food like this to be served to customers. Here we go; A friend of mines told me about this restaurant in Commack. We had a girls day out small little baby shower get together. Great location.. valet parking was organized, the restaurant was clean as well.But I was a bit hungry and excited but yet disappointed with the food. It was 14 of us and no one was happy with the food we received. The waiters were ok but seem to be a bit confused on everyone orders. Let start with the drink. The bellini was super sweet. It look like someone poured sugar in the bottom of glass. So some of us sent it back and decided to get a sangria which was not all that bad. I ordered beef empandas. They taste like steak empandas and several times I chewed down on something hard. Didn't know beef taste that way. Also I had the shrimp tacos . The rating on that was a 5. Had no taste. Exploring the Long Island area since I have been living here for the year! Excited to come across Sangria 71! This restaurant gives off NYC restaurant vibes without having to go out to the city after a long day of work. I stopped by on a Friday night and was able to catch their happy hour before it ended at 7pm. They have wide selection of delicious tapas for $7 each and a variety of drinks to select from. Also, for those who love oysters, they have fresh oysters for $1.50 each. For tapas, I tried the mussels, shishito peppers, tacos, patatas bravas, and croquettes. Everything was delicious except for the patatas bravas, which was a little under fried, soggy, and stale. I love how the tapas come in this tapas stand. The oysters were super fresh and briny. It was a delicious bite of the sea. Of course with the restaurant's name, my friend and I got a pitcher of sangria to share. Service was also really good. They have free valet at the restaurant. As we pulled in, we noticed it was Valet parking, which we don't care for. There is an abandoned garden center next door, which they utilize for additional parking, so we parked there. They start you with a salad for the table. My husband got the Churrasco for 2 - a load of meat variety, which included, pork chops, grilled chicken, skirt steak, chorizo, and lamb chops. He ate, and enjoyed everything. The meat was all cooked to his temperature liking, although thr grilled.chicken was on the dry side. We were craving Spanish food last night, and love paella so we decided to give this place a try after reading so many good reviews. The food was absolutely amazing. Not sure what all of those other reviews are talking about "lack of flavor". Our paella was packed with flavor and was one of the best that we've had in a while. Tons of seafood. They definitely don't skimp on the shellfish like most places do. Great bang for your buck. Priced perfectly for the portion sizes. We did a pick up order but the outdoor seating looked fabulous. Tables spaced apart and everyone was wearing masks. Staff and patrons alike. The service was very good and we were definitely satisfied with our food. The valet gave me my keys back and told me to pull out my own car! What is the point of having a valet if they tell me to get my own car out of the spot? This made me very angry and it has made me consider if I will come back. Food: Skirt Steak - Okay. Skirt steak usually take a marinade very well but this one didn't. There didn't seem to be a good marinade before cooking this steak. Paella Valenciana - No Crisp. I thought the point of having paella in the paella pan is to have the crispy rice at the bottom. I did not have any of that. My rice was sitting in a liquid and did not get crispy. Veal Osso Bucco - Tender. This was fall off the bone tender! This was my first trip here as this type of food isn't my favorite, but we were attending for my sister's rehearsal dinner. But they've really changed my mind about Spanish cuisine after dining here. First, their service was top notch and the staff was friendly and amazing. Our waiter, Dennis is an asset to the restaurant: on-the-ball, friendly, helpful -- a nice guy and a good waiter! Met a friend for a Saturday night dinner. They have valet only which was very backed up, but they got it moving. Once inside we waited about 10 mins after our reservation for our table. Place was packed and was good vibes. I ordered the coconut margarita and my friend had the spicy margarita. They both were missing something and were mediocre at best. We only ordered the one drink since it took that long to try to get through it. Ordered the empanadas for an appetizer. They came out along with bed and oil. The empanadas had no seasoning and was bland. For entrees, had the shrimp with garlic sauce and saffron rice which was recommended. My friend had arroz con pollo. They came out fast, however it was a real disappointment. My friends chicken was so dry you could tell by just looking at it. My shrimp were decent however it wasn't anything to write home about. We both agreed the rice was good. Salad before the entrees was pretty basic but good. We were so put off by the food and drink that we opted out of dessert and couldn't wait to pay the bill and leave. The server was attentive and we did not take out the food experience on him. On a recent visit to sangria 71 we had the lobster special. Instead of bringing melted butter, which all restaurants supply they provided us with some yellow oily liquid. Terrible but the time I found a waiter who could not help us and then had to wait for the manager. Finally, the manager supplied us with real melted butter. Of course our lobsters were cold. I had to hunt down our server chief and get a glass of water. The service has truly integrated at this restaurant. read more
