This one's been on my list forever, so I finally stopped in. Got the mushroom sandwich with fries and it was packed with umami flavor! The place was busy and pretty jam packed, so be ready to wait a bit for a table if you're dining in. Highly recommend, and I'll be back to work through the rest of the sandwich menu.
Absolutely loved my katsu chicken bowl. The picture speaks for itself. The manager was on duty and was checking on every table for quality. It is run really well. The only thing I would say is it felt like for counter service the food did take a long time but to be fair most tables were full so they might have been at capacity for the small kitchen they have.
Great meal at Sando Shack! The pork katsu rice bowl was packed with flavor, but the chicken katsu sandwich completely stole the show...it was super crispy, juicy, and had lots of flavor. The only thing I expected a bit more from was the bread itself. Since it's a sandwich-focused spot, I thought it would be a little more memorable, but it definitely didn't take away from how good everything else was. Don't skip dessert either. We tried both the Choc Oreo Taiyaki and the Nutella Taiyaki (those fish-shaped waffle things), and they were the perfect sweet finish. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!
baby when i tell you this is one of the most simply delicious sandwiches ive had. flavor packed, fresh, and i love that they give you plenty of fries w/ the sando. the cashier was super friendly. & i really appreciate how open and clean the inside of the restaurant is. the curry fries are a MUST this will easily become a monthly visit for me
Very cool spot in Maplewood to add another option of food to their already diverse shopping strip! Bf and I stopped in right when the snow started and got almost the entire place to ourselves. Clean restrooms and friendly staff, very important to me and this place has both! Owner or manager greeted us upon arrival and asked if we had been in before or needed any suggestions from the menu. I asked about the ice cream choices and considered saving room despite the cold outside...but sadly missed out and didn't get any at the end. Bf got the regular chicken katsu bowl and I went with the pork tonkatsu sando. Similar flavors but just depends on if you like using your hands or working with a fork. Feel like he got the right choice (but you miss out on bread if you go with the bowl) I think our favorite part was the fries, great seasoning and perfectly crisp outside.
My brother and I stopped in here for lunch and it was a great experience! The restaurant is clean, and the cashier was very friendly. I had been once before, but it was my brother's first time and he enjoyed his bowl! I got the regular sandwich with curry fries, which tasted excellent with a little cup of dipping sauce they now pair it with. The sandwich is so yummy! The sandwich and fries pair well with a crisp can of Sprite. Everything was very fresh, and well worth the 10 minute wait. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items!
Finally get to try the brick and mortar location of Sando Shack. The last time I had their Sando was so long ago. Their Maplewood location was big and spacious. I really liked the decor and the cool vibe. We ordered the spicy chicken katsu Sando and it was delicious. The meat was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Sando came with the side of fries. We got the togarashi fries and they were so addicting. Fries were not as crispy but very well seasoned and went perfect with the aioli sauce. We also tried the pork katsu rice bowl. I didn't like the sauce as much as the chicken Sando but it was still pretty good. I liked that the rice was well-cooked. You must try their ice cream. I would have come just for it alone. They have a good variety of flavors. My favorite was the miso taro and the yuzu caramel. The staff were very nice to us and the food came out quick. Highly recommend you guys checking this place out.
We were in the area and walk around the neighborhood and saw this place. This was our first time going here. The food was good. The cheeseballs were unique with curry flavor and quite enough cheese. The fries have good seasoning. The staff were fast and helpful. If you are in the area, give them a try.
Highly anticipated spot for me... I was really really counting on some authentic Japanese food after visiting Japan earlier this year. Mostly I wanted the soft bread.. so I was slightly disappointed when we got our sandwiches and they appeared relatively average American looking sandwiches. There are rice bowls also available. The flavor was very good and was satisfied with the meal overall, but just not the caliber we found in Japan. They always seem to be busy which makes Me happy, I'm glad they are finding success. they are in a perfect spot right on the corner. Overall, glad they are there! Excited to try again.. atmosphere was bustling !
Went here for lunch on Saturday afternoon with a friend. I have tried to go before but it's been closed for various reasons. Ordered the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Katsu Sando with curry fries. Sandwich was a good size and flavorful but I didn't really get a lot of sweet and spicy flavor from it. I really enjoyed the curry fries and the dipping sauce with them. The location is pretty large and has plenty of seating. Sandwich took a while to come out, but was hot. Service was friendly. I would love to go back and try a rice bowl.
First time in their brick-and-mortar location in Maplewood. I parked around back but there is street parking in front if you happen to snag it. The set up was similar to the business that was there prior, but it was well laid out and decorated with some great murals and such. Order at the counter where the staff is ready to answer any questions. I had tried the chicken katsu sandwich from the food truck so I decided on a bowl this time. The Pork Katsu rice bowl described as Pork Katsu, house made cabbage slaw, cucumbers, pickled ginger, over white rice. My order came up pretty quickly, and I sat at a table to sample. the bowl came with a sticky sweet sauce on the side. I enjoyed the bowl ingredients minus the sauce. I was skeptical about the slaw and the rice but the combined bite was delicious! The portion was generous with lots of pork katsu slices. Lots of people had the sandwich and seemed to be enjoying it but I might continue getting the bowl. The staff was friendly and helpful, food quick and delicious, the only small issue I had was the plastic fork wasn't the sturdiest to use on the rice. I would go back again, for sure
We stopped for a lunch at this new location and really enjoyed our experience! I hadn't ever gone to their old location, but this one was very spacious with adequate seating. For lunch, it was quite busy work people steadily filling up chairs as they emptied. We ordered a few items from the counter and grabbed a seat. To start, we did the sweet chili wings and cucumber salad. The sweet chili wings were deliciously sticky, perfect amount of heat and spice. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing! For our mains, we did the chicken karage sando and the pie tonkatsu sando. Personally, I LOVED the pork. It was juice and crunchy. The slaw on the sando really helped to cut down on the heavy fried taste. The fries we got with the spicy togarashi seasoning, which was fantastic with the cook of the fries. A light spice flavor without being overbearing or too salty.
Sandwich was good, nice, rich flavor! Tried the fries with Japanese curry sauce- fries were awesome. I ordered the teriyaki tofu rice bowl which was also solid, tofu could have been crispier, but that's a personal preference ! Service was very friendly. Street parking. Order at counter and eat in dining area. Meal took about 15 minutes to come out which they told us about prior. Overall good experience!
I visited the Japanese Garden at MBG today. So I felt like continuing the international staycation and went to the Sando Shack for food as 1st time visitor. I saw Japanese style sandwiches on Yelp and thought, I'll try it. I'm so glad I did! The entrance is sandwiched (haha!) in between several businesses - look for the bright red sign. There is a lot of street parking all around the block. You may just need to circle once or so to find a spot - or walk a block. Once inside you'll see it's a small shop with only a few seats along the storefront windows and the counter to order. I got the Pork Tonkatsu sandwich with Togarashi fries. Sando and fries both had amazing crunch and lots of flavor. The slaw on the sandwich complimented the sauce on the pork, and the bread was nice and toasty. I really enjoyed the meal! But friends, gather in close and listen up... forget regular fries with sea salt and get the Togarashi fries - they were awesome! Seriously. That spice blend is genius on fries and so good with the pork sandwich! I did wait for about 10-12 minutes for food, and there was only one family of three ahead of me. However, the food was hot and freshly made. It was well worth the wait! I'll be back and will bring an appetite. This sando combo is not a skimpy portion and well worth the calories. :) read more

Great food . Got cucumber salad, katsu pork sandwich with fries . and a Nutella taiyaki . They have several Fry flavoring options and also have a curry dipping sauce . The bread they use is perfect for the sandwiches . Everything is fresh and made to Order read more

Sando Shack has been a favorite since they started as a pop up and now their brick-and-mortar location has all the deliciousness! they recently added rice bowls that combat the top spot with their sandos! We stopped to finally visit the brick and mortar of this beloved food truck. We have had their sandos in the past and loved them but this time we ordered their Katsu burger! We stopped in and were greeted warmly by the person who took our ordered. Although it is a smaller venue they had a good number of seats available. We sat and waited for our food and the burgers were ready fairly quickly and were delicious. It was very filling and flavorful. read more

We were there on a Sunday afternoon which was on a less crowded day. We ordered a regular katsu sando sandwich with sea salt fries. The fried chicken was so tender and delicious. The sauce was a different flavor which had a sweet taste to it. We weren't a fan of the sauce but would try the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Sando next time. They had an outdoor patio out in the back that shared with a bar next door instead of eating inside with limited seating. read more
Finally made it to Sando Shack at their new brick and mortar location on Morgan Ford, which is a up and coming little area! You are able to eat inside or in the adjoining bars on either side of the restaurant. I ordered the sweet & spicy chicken katsu sando which is a chicken thigh breaded in panko crumbs, deep fried, topped with cabbage slaw, sweet and spicy chili sauce, on a buttered toasted bread. The first bite was DELICIOUS, however as I ate on, it started to lose it's flavor and I don't know why. The ride wasn't as good as expected at the end. It felt like it needed something else added, maybe a heavier sauce. My fries were also cold. I will more than likely be back to try something else, but am in no rush to return soon. read more

***Sweet & Spicy Chicken Sando*** * Disclaimer *Since last summer I always wanted this sandwich but every time I came to the food truck the line was a mile long so this is my first time trying it* * So I went over to City Foundry and grabbed my preordered sando from their pop up located at their sister location at Hello Poke and I was so excited to finally have this sandwich! I definitely should have ordered two more!! The sandwich tasted so freakin good! Nice crunch of the chicken with the sweat and spicy sauce with a bed of cole slaw to cut the heat on a beautifully toasted bread! Oh my goodness this sandwich was absolutely phenomenal. The people working were helpful and kind and the food was ready quickly! It is a small shop inside, but my friend and I felt completely welcome to sit and enjoy our food. The togarahi fries were amazing and I 100% recommend! read more
We went to try Sando Shack around lunch time on a Thursday. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff is really nice and welcoming. They were kind enough to let us go through the kitchen area to sit in the outdoor patio area because the weather was so nice. We got the pork katsu, the mushroom katsu, and the curry fries. The food was very flavorful and we especially enjoyed the curry fries! The food was a little bit on the pricier side-- not necessarily something you would buy every day to eat, but we will definitely be back to try the other types of sandwiches as well! read more
Sando Shack is a unique offering in St. Louis. I tried the Katsu Burger and the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It's best for takeout because there isn't really much seating inside. The service was friendly and quick and while I enjoyed my meal, I found the flavors to be a bit underwhelming. It's worth trying if you're in the area and good for a quick bite, but not sure it would be my first choice. read more

So happy for sando shack that they have opened up their own brick and mortar shop! After a couple years of ordering from the food truck and various pop ups I was excited to order from their brand new location. I place a large order for 20 people in my office for lunch and the staff was all so friendly helpful and quick! it only took 30 minutes for them to prepare which was fantastic. I called to put my order in (they're still working on setting up their online ordering process) but you can always go in and order right at the counter. Highly recommend checking it out! read more

We arrived at Sando Shack on a Thursday afternoon, parking is pretty easy in the area. The interior has limited seating, so could be crowded during busy times. Once inside we placed our orders. We tried the Pork Tonkatsu Sando and the Chicken Karaage Sando. They were both very flavorful, although the sandwiches are so packed, they can start to fall apart towards the end. The Togarahi fries were solid. Nothing too crazy. The real star of this meal was the curry fries. They were so flavorful and fresh out of the fryer. Prices are reasonable, if I were in the area, I'd definitely stop in for a bite again! read more

Foreign sandwiches! I like this place because they offer something different than most of the delis in STL. They've got a Japanese sandwich thing going on and I really dig it, they're always really polite and appreciate all the business they get and the food has always been top notch. My favorite food group is "sandwich," so I was jazzed to try some pork katsu sandwiches, but my partner wanted to split the chicken katsu topped with a sweet and spicy slaw, so we went with that. Sounds like a flavor bomb - and it was a bomb for sure, just in a negative way. Despite the promising ingredient list and vibrant vision, the sandwich was bland and under seasoned. Maybe I should have doused it in one of their sauces but I had taken it to go by the time I bit in. The chicken was moist and juicy and the fries slapped though. Overall, it was a 3.5 but I'll round up because ya gotta support small business. read more

Today I ordered the fruit sandwich. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was wonderful! It was like a sandwich made from cinnamon bread with whipped cream and strawberries in the middle. I ate half the sandwich. I'm trying to decide if I should share the other half with my kids or hoard it for myself. Ha! If you see a pop up for this place, BE SURE TO ORDER SOMETHING. You will not be disappointed!! PS Last time I ordered a chicken sandwich. Photos are included. I enjoyed the chicken sandwich too! read more
I stopped by and got a Sando yesterday with my mom. I have to say that their sandwiches are super yummy!! I just couldn't tell the difference between the regular and the sweet and spicy we both got a different Sando and switched halves so that we could each try both Sando - I can't say that I noticed a difference. Their Japanese potato salad is really yummy as well!! Overall it is a great Food truck and I will definitely be back!! read more

My partner and I were excited to give Sando Shack a try but we were unfortunately let down when we stopped in today. We ordered the chicken katsu sandwich, 1 regular and 1 sweet & spicy. As well as some curry fries. The sandwiches were pretty bland and flavorless. Basically just tasted like panko breaded, overly deep fried chicken. The breading had some burnt bits which was not great. The slaw had no significant impact and honestly you wouldn't be able to tell if it was on there or not. The sauce felt very minimal (on both sandwiches) and you can't really taste it. The bread was standard toasted white bread. Overall these sandwiches are nothing special. Fries are fine, but those are pretty hard to mess up. The chicken was pretty juicy and not dry, which is about the only complement I can give. Come on STL we gotta do better. This place has an opportunity to offer something unique to the area and totally misses the mark. Season the chicken and the breading! Make a flavorful slaw that adds a tangy, creamy texture to the sandwich! Develop a sauce that counterbalances the richness of the sandwich and pops! Source a local higher quality bread (there's plenty of places here)! Get some quality control around the food coming out of the kitchen! These are the basics. read more
Went here for a Yelp Elite event! I did not expect the yumminess that came from this food truck! The delicate balance of flavor and proportion was spot on. I was worried about the Katsu Sauce, cause I had never heard of it before. The breading was superb, perfectly coated and the chicken was flavorful. I would highly recommend getting some of this amazing chicken. They even have a sweet & spicy version. read more

I love when I have high hopes and expectations for a restaurant, and they not only meet but exceed my expectations!!!! Again, I lived in Yokohama, Japan for 3 1/2 years. I am very particular about Japanese food as a result. The space is the perfect "whole in the wall" place you would find in Japan. A few counter seats are available for dine-in, so take out is also a good idea. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered a few sandwiches to try along with the cucumber salad. The salad was crunchy and refreshing with a bit of heat in the dressing. The sandwiches were generous portions of protein with a cool slaw. Hands down my favorite part of the meal were the fries. IKR!?!?! You're thinking how were fries the best part after a tasty crispy sandwich?? They have fry seasonings!!! I got the curry seasoning and . Apparently it's a secret recipe, so I guess I'll have to go back anytime I get a craving for them!! Definitely recommend, it's a hearty filling meal offering just a little something different. read more
