This one's been on my list forever, so I finally stopped in. Got the mushroom sandwich with fries and it was packed with umami flavor! The place was busy and pretty jam packed, so be ready to wait a bit for a table if you're dining in. Highly recommend, and I'll be back to work through the rest of the sandwich menu.
Absolutely loved my katsu chicken bowl. The picture speaks for itself. The manager was on duty and was checking on every table for quality. It is run really well. The only thing I would say is it felt like for counter service the food did take a long time but to be fair most tables were full so they might have been at capacity for the small kitchen they have.
Great meal at Sando Shack! The pork katsu rice bowl was packed with flavor, but the chicken katsu sandwich completely stole the show...it was super crispy, juicy, and had lots of flavor. The only thing I expected a bit more from was the bread itself. Since it's a sandwich-focused spot, I thought it would be a little more memorable, but it definitely didn't take away from how good everything else was. Don't skip dessert either. We tried both the Choc Oreo Taiyaki and the Nutella Taiyaki (those fish-shaped waffle things), and they were the perfect sweet finish. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!
baby when i tell you this is one of the most simply delicious sandwiches ive had. flavor packed, fresh, and i love that they give you plenty of fries w/ the sando. the cashier was super friendly. & i really appreciate how open and clean the inside of the restaurant is. the curry fries are a MUST this will easily become a monthly visit for me
Very cool spot in Maplewood to add another option of food to their already diverse shopping strip! Bf and I stopped in right when the snow started and got almost the entire place to ourselves. Clean restrooms and friendly staff, very important to me and this place has both! Owner or manager greeted us upon arrival and asked if we had been in before or needed any suggestions from the menu. I asked about the ice cream choices and considered saving room despite the cold outside...but sadly missed out and didn't get any at the end. Bf got the regular chicken katsu bowl and I went with the pork tonkatsu sando. Similar flavors but just depends on if you like using your hands or working with a fork. Feel like he got the right choice (but you miss out on bread if you go with the bowl) I think our favorite part was the fries, great seasoning and perfectly crisp outside.
My brother and I stopped in here for lunch and it was a great experience! The restaurant is clean, and the cashier was very friendly. I had been once before, but it was my brother's first time and he enjoyed his bowl! I got the regular sandwich with curry fries, which tasted excellent with a little cup of dipping sauce they now pair it with. The sandwich is so yummy! The sandwich and fries pair well with a crisp can of Sprite. Everything was very fresh, and well worth the 10 minute wait. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items!
Finally get to try the brick and mortar location of Sando Shack. The last time I had their Sando was so long ago. Their Maplewood location was big and spacious. I really liked the decor and the cool vibe. We ordered the spicy chicken katsu Sando and it was delicious. The meat was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Sando came with the side of fries. We got the togarashi fries and they were so addicting. Fries were not as crispy but very well seasoned and went perfect with the aioli sauce. We also tried the pork katsu rice bowl. I didn't like the sauce as much as the chicken Sando but it was still pretty good. I liked that the rice was well-cooked. You must try their ice cream. I would have come just for it alone. They have a good variety of flavors. My favorite was the miso taro and the yuzu caramel. The staff were very nice to us and the food came out quick. Highly recommend you guys checking this place out.
We were in the area and walk around the neighborhood and saw this place. This was our first time going here. The food was good. The cheeseballs were unique with curry flavor and quite enough cheese. The fries have good seasoning. The staff were fast and helpful. If you are in the area, give them a try.
Highly anticipated spot for me... I was really really counting on some authentic Japanese food after visiting Japan earlier this year. Mostly I wanted the soft bread.. so I was slightly disappointed when we got our sandwiches and they appeared relatively average American looking sandwiches. There are rice bowls also available. The flavor was very good and was satisfied with the meal overall, but just not the caliber we found in Japan. They always seem to be busy which makes Me happy, I'm glad they are finding success. they are in a perfect spot right on the corner. Overall, glad they are there! Excited to try again.. atmosphere was bustling !

Sandwich was a good size and flavorful but I didn't really get a lot of sweet and spicy flavor from it. I really enjoyed the curry fries and the dipping sauce with them. The location is pretty large and has plenty of seating. Sandwich took a while to come out, but was hot. Service was friendly. I would love to go back and try a rice bowl.

The set up was similar to the business that was there prior, but it was well laid out and decorated with some great murals and such. Order at the counter where the staff is ready to answer any questions. I had tried the chicken katsu sandwich from the food truck so I decided on a bowl this time. The Pork Katsu rice bowl described as Pork Katsu, house made cabbage slaw, cucumbers, pickled ginger, over white rice. My order came up pretty quickly, and I sat at a table to sample. the bowl came with a sticky sweet sauce on the side. I enjoyed the bowl ingredients minus the sauce. I was skeptical about the slaw and the rice but the combined bite was delicious! The portion was generous with lots of pork katsu slices. Lots of people had the sandwich and seemed to be enjoying it but I might continue getting the bowl. The staff was friendly and helpful, food quick and delicious, the only small issue I had was the plastic fork wasn't the sturdiest to use on the rice. I would go back again, for sure
We stopped for a lunch at this new location and really enjoyed our experience! I hadn't ever gone to their old location, but this one was very spacious with adequate seating. For lunch, it was quite busy work people steadily filling up chairs as they emptied. We ordered a few items from the counter and grabbed a seat. To start, we did the sweet chili wings and cucumber salad. The sweet chili wings were deliciously sticky, perfect amount of heat and spice. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing! For our mains, we did the chicken karage sando and the pie tonkatsu sando. Personally, I LOVED the pork. It was juice and crunchy. The slaw on the sando really helped to cut down on the heavy fried taste. The fries we got with the spicy togarashi seasoning, which was fantastic with the cook of the fries. A light spice flavor without being overbearing or too salty.
Sandwich was good, nice, rich flavor! Tried the fries with Japanese curry sauce- fries were awesome. I ordered the teriyaki tofu rice bowl which was also solid, tofu could have been crispier, but that's a personal preference ! Service was very friendly. Street parking. Order at counter and eat in dining area. Meal took about 15 minutes to come out which they told us about prior. Overall good experience!

I've been meaning to stop by here for at least a year, and I finally made it. Definitely worth the wait. I stopped by on a Sunday just before a rush, so I was able to get my food ordered and made promptly. I just had the spicy chicken katsu sandwich and fries, which was very good. Particularly with the sheer amount fries in the box, you could easily split it. I do want to eventually come by and try one of their desserts, but I was absolutely stuffed after my food, so I did not indulge this time. Considering the serving size, I think the price is very reasonable. It's not a huge menu, but sometimes that's just a sign that they only make what they know they can do well. Loved the food truck and was happy to try the new location. Chicken is delicious as always and very filling. Staff was friendly and the cashier went through everything they had and answered all of our questions. Clean establishment and is a great choice for a quick lunch. Will certainly head back next time I am craving some katsu chicken. read more

I was anxiously awaiting getting to try them in Maplewood, and it was worth the wait! The chicken on my sandwich was crispy and juicy, the toppings added a nice crunch too. I got the curry seasoned fries, but couldn't really notice any huge flavor difference. Overall though, it was a stellar meal! The staff was super friendly for how busy they have been - and how busy they were when we went at 6:30 on a Thursday. I got the matcha ice cream for desert (they partner with Sugarwich!) and my friend got a taiyaki. We are used to places serving taiyaki warm, but this one was not. She still said it was tasty though, and filled with plenty of Nutella! read more
Love Sandos new location! So much bigger than the tiny spot they had before! The decor is still the same but there's so much light! Service was fast even during busy lunch hour. I got the classic sando and it was delicious and had to save some for later! Love their sauce and toppings! The curry fries is a bit sweet. Stopped in for lunch around noon on a Sunday and it was already quite busy! Despite how busy it was the food was very quick to arrive! I tried the chicken karaage sandwich with fries and the star of the show was definitely the chicken! Specifically the breading, it was fried perfectly very light, not too oily and seasoned perfectly! The slaw was a refreshing touch as well. The sandwich was a little hard to eat as it can get quite messy but it was delicious. The fries are crunchy but nothing extraordinary. Overall the service was great and speedy. There were a decent amount of seats and a little corner with games. By the time I left every table was taken but I will definitely be coming back for that chicken again! read more
New location of the Sando Shack has opened in Maplewood right on Manchester Ave, so really easy to get to with ample street parking and lot parking in the rear. The place was really clean and had a pretty good amount of seating. The menu is pretty simple just a few sandwiches and a few bowl options (both same topping just sandwiches or rice bowl). They also have a few Japanese ice cream options (they look like little fish!). I got the basic chicken Sando with fries (there are three options: salt, or two spicier ones - I'm boring so just regular for me). The chicken Sando had a good crispiness to it and the bread was toasted perfectly. The slaw and the sauce was a little underwhelming to me. Service was good, nothing exceptional but staff was kind, and answered my questions with ease. Food came out relatively fast. read more

I am so happy to have Sando Shack move to Maplewood! I couldn't wait to stop by after the opened. I got a chicken katsu rice bowl and a red bean taiyaki on the side. The food came out hot and fresh pretty quickly. Everything tasted delicious just as I've experienced with their food truck. They've unfortunately had their air conditioner go out but when it's repaired I urge you to give them a try to welcome them to Maplewood. read more
Loved the spot! Cute games to play, decent amount of seating, and was worth the wait! Dropped by in the evening and was bustling with business. The ice cream flavors sounded great though I wasn't able to try any. Maybe a ten minute wait for the food to come out but it was piping hot and tasted amazing. Sweet and spicy chicken katsu didn't have much spice but was tasty nonetheless. Only downside is that some menu items were sold out by the time I arrived like the curry rice balls, but all in all great experience, am definitely going to be back soon! read more

Cozy shop in tower grove! My friend and I went just as they opened so we were serviced quickly. I ordered the regular chicken katsu sando and opted for fries with sea salt. There were three different variations of fries you could order. You can't really tell from the photo, I was starving so I inhaled half of that bad boy. The chicken was a little too crispy- almost burnt. I still enjoyed it enough to just knock out one star. The service was very friendly though which I appreciate. I drove all the way from the valley so it was quite a trek. My friend recommended we go to a sando place, turns out it was a different place where they do sweet sandos lol oops. I've had this spot on my list to try for a minute now and it did not disappoint! I entered and asked what the cashier recommended and I got was he suggested: the sweet and spicy sandwich with curry fries. I will say I wish there was more of the sweet sauce on the sandwich because when I could taste it there was a nice balance, but the spice was a bit overpowering. The curry fries though were sweet and flavorful and exactly what you didn't know you needed on a fry. read more

Overall, a great place for sandwiches to go. A small space, so be aware if you are coming to dine in. WAIT TIME: Came in at 2:30 on a Saturday. Ordered at the counter, took about 20 mins for food to be ready. Not too bad, but longer than we expected considering there was no one else in front of us. But again, we didn't mind too much, considering we knew it was being made right there. FOOD: I got the sweet and spicy chicken sando with the spicy fries, my partner got the pork tonkatsu sando with regular fries. We also shared the red bean taiyaki dessert. The taiyaki mostly tasted like a waffle, but the red bean paste was a new flavor for me. It was just alright. The sandos were so tasty though! Very well spiced and the coleslaw complements them well. Both were very delicious. The fries are also excellently crispy and thick! Very yummy and filling meals. SERVICE: Ordered at counter, cashier was nice and explained what the togarashi fries were (the spicy ones). Pretty easy and helpful. AMBIANCE: Small place, only a few window stool spots, seems like more of a takeaway place. But I liked the decor! PRICE: Came out to around $20 a person. The sandos were $13-14, which wasn't bad. The dessert was $4 which is a little pricey for what it is, but not terrible either. read more

I've been dying to try this spot for awhile now & im so happy i took the time to bop in. I picked up a to go order for my husband & I & the wait time was nothing. They had the food out super fast & fresh. I want to go back when I can eat the food fresh ! After the 20 min drive home the food was still outstanding. Although the inside doesn't have much space- I wouldn't recommend large groups & maybe just a 2 person friend date. There's a small bar area to sit at. Can't wait to go back!! read more
