I've been meaning to stop by here for at least a year, and I finally made it. Definitely worth the wait. I stopped by on a Sunday just before a rush, so I was able to get my food ordered and made promptly. I just had the spicy chicken katsu sandwich and fries, which was very good. Particularly with the sheer amount fries in the box, you could easily split it. I do want to eventually come by and try one of their desserts, but I was absolutely stuffed after my food, so I did not indulge this time. Considering the serving size, I think the price is very reasonable. It's not a huge menu, but sometimes that's just a sign that they only make what they know they can do well. I ordered the katsu curry, which was pretty good. The katsu was flavourful and satisfying, although the rice was a little wetter than I personally prefer. That's more of a personal preference than anything wrong with the dish, but it did affect the texture for me. I also found the curry to be a little salty, though the overall flavor was still enjoyable. I'd definitely be interested in coming back and trying some of their other items since there are several things on the menu that caught my eye. read more

Great meal at Sando Shack! The pork katsu rice bowl was packed with flavor, but the chicken katsu sandwich completely stole the show...it was super crispy, juicy, and had lots of flavor. The only thing I expected a bit more from was the bread itself. Since it's a sandwich-focused spot, I thought it would be a little more memorable, but it definitely didn't take away from how good everything else was. Don't skip dessert either. I feel compelled to write this at the chance someone who cares will see it. This place had all the makings of a good restaurant, but, like so many, it's neglected. The ingredients seemed good but my chicken thigh was cheap, the chicken was burned, the sauce was too salty, and the sandwich was half heartedly put together. The fries and sauce were very good -- and obviously required the least effort. That's what gives me hope. The restaurant itself has sticky floors (which I've tried to avoid after I turned 30) and is a bit of a mess. There's a towel sitting under the big jug of water. It's just not clean or easy to be in. I saw the pics when you guys were a food truck. I know you were making incredible stuff. The gal at the front was friendly enough, but all in all this was a bull*hit experience considering the potential. The restaurants that are consistently good have the owners/head chef watching, caring, and making sure their workers deliver the experience that was intended. My brother and I stopped in here for lunch and it was a great experience! The restaurant is clean, and the cashier was very friendly. I had been once before, but it was my brother's first time and he enjoyed his bowl! Very cool spot in Maplewood to add another option of food to their already diverse shopping strip! Bf and I stopped in right when the snow started and got almost the entire place to ourselves. Clean restrooms and friendly staff, very important to me and this place has both! Owner or manager greeted us upon arrival and asked if we had been in before or needed any suggestions from the menu. I asked about the ice cream choices and considered saving room despite the cold outside...but sadly missed out and didn't get any at the end. Bf got the regular chicken katsu bowl and I went with the pork tonkatsu sando. Similar flavors but just depends on if you like using your hands or working with a fork. Finally get to try the brick and mortar location of Sando Shack. The last time I had their Sando was so long ago. Their Maplewood location was big and spacious. I really liked the decor and the cool vibe. We ordered the spicy chicken katsu Sando and it was delicious. The meat was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Sando came with the side of fries. We got the togarashi fries and they were so addicting. Fries were not as crispy but very well seasoned and went perfect with the aioli sauce. We also tried the pork katsu rice bowl. I didn't like the sauce as much as the chicken Sando but it was still pretty good. I liked that the rice was well-cooked. You must try their ice cream. I would have come just for it alone. They have a good variety of flavors. My favorite was the miso taro and the yuzu caramel. The staff were very nice to us and the food came out quick. Highly anticipated spot for me... I was really really counting on some authentic Japanese food after visiting Japan earlier this year. Mostly I wanted the soft bread.. so I was slightly disappointed when we got our sandwiches and they appeared relatively average American looking sandwiches. There are rice bowls also available. Went here for lunch on Saturday afternoon with a friend. I have tried to go before but it's been closed for various reasons. Ordered the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Katsu Sando with curry fries. Sandwich was a good size and flavorful but I didn't really get a lot of sweet and spicy flavor from it. I really enjoyed the curry fries and the dipping sauce with them. I was skeptical about the slaw and the rice but the combined bite was delicious! The portion was generous with lots of pork katsu slices. Lots of people had the sandwich and seemed to be enjoying it but I might continue getting the bowl. For lunch, it was quite busy work people steadily filling up chairs as they emptied. We ordered a few items from the counter and grabbed a seat. To start, we did the sweet chili wings and cucumber salad. The sweet chili wings were deliciously sticky, perfect amount of heat and spice. The cucumber salad was crisp and refreshing! "Really Good Food, Really Good Price." Me and a friend stopped in here for Taste of Maplewood for a quick late evening dinner. When we walked in, we saw the traditional Japanese artwork with their logo. The floors were very clean and mopped as well. The staff were very quick on making our order, as well as being very attentive and quick taking our order. The owner was quick on making my friend's matcha ice cream. I tried the chicken karaage sandwich with fries and the star of the show was definitely the chicken! Specifically the breading, it was fried perfectly very light, not too oily and seasoned perfectly! The slaw was a refreshing touch as well. The sandwich was a little hard to eat as it can get quite messy but it was delicious. The fries are crunchy but nothing extraordinary. The chicken Sando had a good crispiness to it and the bread was toasted perfectly. The slaw and the sauce was a little underwhelming to me. I've been wanting to check out their brick and mortar, but hadn't found the time - glad to finally make it work! I placed an order online and was easily able to pick it up. I love that the sandwiches come with a side of fries! I got the tofu rice bowl and my husband got the pork katsu with the curry fries. We also got the egg salad sandwich with the spicy fries. The food was still warm and relatively crispy when we got home. The seasoning on each of the fries were delicious! The tofu bowl didn't really have a ton of flavor, the pieces of bok choy had surprising and sporadic heat, would have loved more throughout the dish. The husband said the pork katsu was great and well-balanced. The egg salad was creamy, but also didn't have much flavor. All in all, glad we tried it and I would go back to dine-in! read more

The ice cream flavors sounded great though I wasn't able to try any. Maybe a ten minute wait for the food to come out but it was piping hot and tasted amazing. Cozy shop in tower grove! My friend and I went just as they opened so we were serviced quickly. I ordered the regular chicken katsu sando and opted for fries with sea salt. There were three different variations of fries you could order. You can't really tell from the photo, I was starving so I inhaled half of that bad boy. The chicken was a little too crispy- almost burnt. I still enjoyed it enough to just knock out one star. The service was very friendly though which I appreciate. FOOD: I got the sweet and spicy chicken sando with the spicy fries, my partner got the pork tonkatsu sando with regular fries. We also shared the red bean taiyaki dessert. The taiyaki mostly tasted like a waffle, but the red bean paste was a new flavor for me. It was just alright. The sandos were so tasty though! Very well spiced and the coleslaw complements them well. I visited the Japanese Garden at MBG today. So I felt like continuing the international staycation and went to the Sando Shack for food as 1st time visitor. I saw Japanese style sandwiches on Yelp and thought, I'll try it. I'm so glad I did! The entrance is sandwiched (haha!) in between several businesses - look for the bright red sign. There is a lot of street parking all around the block. You may just need to circle once or so to find a spot - or walk a block. Once inside you'll see it's a small shop with only a few seats along the storefront windows and the counter to order. I got the Pork Tonkatsu sandwich with Togarashi fries. Sando and fries both had amazing crunch and lots of flavor. The slaw on the sandwich complimented the sauce on the pork, and the bread was nice and toasty. I really enjoyed the meal! But friends, gather in close and listen up... forget regular fries with sea salt and get the Togarashi fries - they were awesome! Seriously. That spice blend is genius on fries and so good with the pork sandwich! I did wait for about 10-12 minutes for food, and there was only one family of three ahead of me. We stopped to finally visit the brick and mortar of this beloved food truck. We have had their sandos in the past and loved them but this time we ordered their Katsu burger! We stopped in and were greeted warmly by the person who took our ordered. Although it is a smaller venue they had a good number of seats available.
