After a 5 hour drive to Markham, I was looking for something light in the area. I looked up what was in the area and saw Sam's Congee Delight 2 blocks up. There's no good congee east of the GTA so had to come check this out. Lots of parking at this plaza so don't worry to much about that. I parked and walked in. The space looks really large but I was looking for take out. I had a quick scan of the menu and ordered a congee with fish slices and a dough stick. I went to the washroom to wash my hands and when I got back my order was there. That was fast! I was off to the hotel and popped it open. Portion size was decent, smaller than other places but the price is ridiculous so it seems about right. There's an OK amount of fish, could have used a little more. The cook of the congee was really good. Really nice consistency. Flavour was good. Dipped the dough stick into it and it wasn't greasy or oily so that was nice. Probably one of the better congees I've had in awhile and would come back. I'm still blown away at the quick service.

The place was packed with a lineup out the door, which is usually a great sign--and it definitely was this time. We ordered the egg congee with minced beef, rice rolls, spicy tofu, and of course the fried donut. Everything tasted exactly as it should: clean, savoury, comforting, and genuinely homey. No complaints at all. The fried donut was perfectly spongey and crispy without being oily -- 9/10. The surprise standout for me was the sesame dessert ball, served cut into fours. It was my first time trying it and it definitely won't be my last -- 10/10. Service: 10/10 There were plenty of staff working efficiently; it honestly reminded me of a colony of organized worker ants (in the best way possible). Ambiance: 9/10 Spacious, modern, and clean. The open kitchen adds a great touch -- it shows confidence and reassures you that the food is as clean as the space. Overall, an excellent experience. I'll definitely be back!

The moment I stepped into this restaurant, I felt the authenticity of Hong Kong breakfast, and it's funny, because I've never had breakfast in Hong Kong. However, I guess it's because we have more or less watched some Hong Kong movies or dramas, and they allow me to have an image of Hong Kong in my mind. Coincidentally, Sam's Congee fit that image perfectly. The white tiles, the wooden tables, the colourful utensils, etc. They are just a perfect match. The food there is just perfect, 10/10. I don't think I need to make any comment on them. Just see the photos of this restaurant and you should have an idea how good they are. They don't provide luxurious food, but the true and authentic food, the real food. All you need to do is come here and taste them yourself. The service is quite good, which is very strange for a Hong Kong restaurant if you know what I mean

We came here on a weekday morning for some delicious congee and appetizers. Service was friendly and quick. All bowls, napkins, spoons, chopsticks and tea provided upfront. Everything seemed clean and efficient though it wasn't too busy when we went. Food: Pork liver and preserved egg congee - liver has a great flavor and texture (for those who like liver!). Preserved egg is smooth. The congee is hearty and delicious. Congee comes with peanuts and green onions. 5/5. Minced beef congee - the beef is super tender and soft. Beef flavor is good too. 4/5. Fried noodles with bean sprouts - I feel like the noodles are made fresh as they seem different and more easily break apart. Still really delicious. 4/5. Fish siu mai - this was a really interesting dish. It has a good fresh fish flavor, very tender and soft but holds its own. 4.5/5. Dough stick - pretty standard fare - I do wish they kept it full length rather than pre cutting it up. 3/5. Rice rolls with dried shrimp - the rice rolls are super smooth and silky to eat. The dried shrimp add that salty and briny kick. 4/5. Nice thing about the restaurant is you can add sauces at your will - sweet sauce, hot sauce, peanut sauce, vinegar, seasame seeds, etc. all at your fingertips to customize your dishes. Price: Very affordable for a filling (though carb heavy) dishes.

It's hard to find bad asian food in Markham. Sam's is a consistent staple in the area, and they've moved to a larger place from their OG days. This location, on the day that we visited, was extremely cold inside! We had to go to the car and get coats! Anyways, you come for the food. The congee is piping hot and flavorful. The noodles were great as well. The restaurant is clean and spacious. Plenty of free parking in the lot. Staff is friendly. They compete with many congee places in the area, but they definitely hold their own and should be on your list.

This place is busy and bustling even early in the morning. The service is quick and efficient. We got our food not long after putting in our order. The assorted congee was super comforting and tasted like a warm hug. There were bits of minced beef, squid, and pork rind in it, and paired so well with the freshly fried dough sticks. The fried noodles with bean sprout were really good, but truthfully, we could have gone without it. We wanted to try it since it was our first time and seems to be a popular dish. The rice rolls were my personal favorite. It was so fresh, had a nice chew, and it just hit all the right spots in flavor. The prices here are so good and super affordable, too! It's definitely worth it!

My boyfriend showed me this little Markham gem -- if you love congee, this is your next spot Authentic taste of Hong Kong and affordable meals true to the traditional flavours of congee, rice rolls, and fried dough. Here's what we ordered: * 101 - Minced Beef Congee $7.50 * 193 -2 Kinds of Egg (Salted & Preserved Egg) Congee $9.50 * 203 - w/ Dough Stick $7.00 * 302 - Sweet Cruller (1pc) $2.75 Servers were quick and efficient. The interior is simple and showcases the original open air food stall from 1966 on the wall near the front entrance! Lots of seating inside, great for groups of 2-6. Plenty of free parking outside as well. We wanted to try the cruller with bean paste $2.75 (303) but they sold out - we'll definitely come back to try some more menu items later! 20250426

This spot used to be inside Market Village next to Pacific mall, been a long time since I've been here so I was super excited to try this delicious HK comfort food again! Service was incredibly fast and restaurant is much more modern and nicer than the old location. The food was really good, very traditional Hong Kong style dishes with amazing flavour. Congee isn't for everyone but Sam's congee is packed with flavour. Here's what we ordered: 101 - Minced Beef Congee $7.50 (9/10) 193 -2 Kinds of Egg (Salted & Preserved Egg) Congee $9.50 (8.5/10) 203 - w/ Dough Stick $7.00 (9/10) 302 - Sweet Cruller (1pc) $2.75 (9/10) All the food was amazing and fairly priced (especially in today market). Highly recommend and will definitely be back again soon!!

Pricey for congee but they have lots of flavor combinations. The dough stick with rice noodle was decent size. The streamed radish cake was very small for the costs. Parking available in plaza.

Arrived just after 11am on a Saturday. We were fortunate as there was no line and we got a table right away. Service was quick The restaurant looked very clean. I will definitely be coming back here for certain dishes. Things we liked: Plain Congee - testy with no MSG. I would've preferred it to be a little thicker, but it was still very good. Dough fritter rice noodle roll - this dish was so good that we ordered a second one. Fried noodle with bean sprout - tasty but not overly salty and not super oily, which was wonderful. Things that were just OK that we didn't like: Rice noodle roll with dried shrimp - the rice noodle was very good; however, we would've preferred that the dried shrimp was embedded in the rice noodle, not just sprinkled on top and then rolled up. Hot mung bean paste dessert - this was OK. It would've been better if it was actually hot and not room temperature. Hot black sesame paste dessert - I do not recommend this. It was gelatinous and tasted more like something that came out of a box.

Such a hidden gem and under rated traditional Chinese breakfast restaurant with reasonable price. From outside, it doesn't have any appealing look, while inside, very clean and bright nice space, very well-organized, efficient service. We came on Sunday morning, it was all full, with groups of people waiting. It was nice to see the well-lit kitchen, where Chinese dough stick being fried. After waiting for about 10 mins, we were seated at a table with hot tea served right after. We ordered the dough stick 301, 303 and 203, porridge with salted and pickled eggs, all came hot, fresh and yummy. Highly recommended!

There is not much deco in the restaurant. The ambiance reminds me of a college cafe. The service was very quick. The food was FANTASTIC! All the dishes were as I remembered from Hong Kong. Definitely will come back when I visit next time!

Fast paced, classic Chinese breakfast items. Came here on a weekend morning and it was packed! We were greeted by a waitress that put us down and gave us a buzzer. We waited around 15-20 minutes before getting seated. Once seated, you see that you have communal sauces on the table like soy sauce, hot sauce, peanut sauce, sesame, pepper and salt. Food came quickly after ordering. Here's what we got: Fried noodle with bean sprout 2.5/5 - Kind of bland to be honest. Tasted a lot better with some hot sauce on it Fried dough fritter 4/5 - Nice and crispy and pairs well with congee Preserved egg congee 3/5 - It was pretty standard but nothing special. Can be seasoned yourself with soy sauce, salt and pepper. Plain rice rolls 2/5 - Usually what I use to gauge this dish at a restaurant. It simply was not silky enough as I've had with other restaurants. I like that the soy sauce, peanut sauce and sesame is on the table for you to put as much or as little as you'd like. Dried shrimp rice rolls 2/5 - Again, not silky enough for that mouth feel. Overall, I think the food can use more of an update with their flavours. Service was quick and attentive though. Still give it a try if you're looking for a simple, cheap eat.

I had my food in my insulated bag, so the sauce leaked into the Fantuan bag and my insulated bag. Luckily, my car was fine. As a result, my rating is four stars. I wanted to try a new eatery. I looked at my Fantuan app and noticed He Bei Chinese Cuisine. It had dumplings and snacks that I enjoy, so I said yes to placing a dinner order from this eatery. I ordered these items: - Pork and chive steamed dumplings (large has 14 dumplings) - Tea eggs - Shredded potato salad On Fantuan, when you purchase $15 worth of food, you get the shredded potato salad for a cent. Deal! After placing my order near my home, I drove over to this eatery. The drive was ten minutes. I was given an estimated time of fifteen minutes. It was ready in ten minutes. I had no problem finding this eatery. There was plenty of parking. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I saw the Yubu sign. My heart sank, as I loved the Korean tofu pockets from this joint. I don't understand it, but we were fine communicating with each other in our languages. She pointed out the blue Fantuan bag on the table behind me. I thanked her and wished her a nice day. She said thanks right back. I put my food in my insulated bag. With the leak, I managed to launder the Fantuan bag and clean my insulated bag. After I cleaned up, I had dinner at home. The food was amazing and filling! I loved the shredded potato salad. Sure, a lot of the sesame-soy sauce was gone. However, it tasted yummy. It was worth the cent! The steamed pork and chive dumplings were so good. I didn't dunk them in soy sauce. The filling had so much moisture that I felt like I was eating soup dumplings. The filling had yummy flavour and the dumplings were steamed to perfection. Excellent! You can buy frozen dumplings from this place. I'll need to do it. The tea eggs were the perfect snack while streaming hockey games. I peeled the shells off both of them. The eggs were cracked to allow the amazing soy-based sauce to marinate and get into the eggs. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

If you break it down, it's actually such a good deal: the snakehead upgrade is usually +$3 each and their handcrafted drinks run around $6. No extra charge for any of that with this combo, so... why not? I got the scallion pickled cabbage fish soup (mild spice) and my friend went for the Laotan boiled fish (a bit spicier). For the snack, we picked half Taiwanese sausage and half glutinous rice cake to get both savoury and dessert vibes. When the bowls came out, they looked huge, but the portion was kinda deceiving... it's a very wide, shallow bowl, so the amount of actual soup wasn't as generous as it looked. For a fish soup restaurant, I definitely expected a deeper bowl. But the fish itself was fresh with that nice bouncy texture, plus vermicelli and a solid amount of pickled veggies. They also have a self-serve rice station with both white rice and multigrain rice. The rice cookers even have little signs showing when a new batch is cooking, which I thought was cute and convenient. Overall, flavour wise, it was solid and the promo made it worth the visit. But I am not sure if I'd come back again.

New sauerkraut fish soup spot in Markham…read more A chain from asia that has finally made it's way to Markham. They are known for their sauerkraut fish soup that comes with unlimited self serve rice on the side. Servers were attentive, spacing of the seating and tables were tight. Often times people kept brushing up against my chair while getting up to go get their rounds of rice. Although not a deal breaker, was annoying while trying to enjoy your food. The portions are big enough for 2 if you get a large, but since it was our first time we wanted to try 2 different soups. Here's what we got: Chicken wings 4/5 - Came out raw the first time after we bit into it. But quickly flagged a server to let them know how this issue. They brought us a new one shortly after that was perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy on the outside. Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili 4/5 - Their number one classic so we had to try. It's sour and spicy with the right amount of kick to it. Basa fish filets were also tasty. Came out luke warm. Princess's tomato fish 4/5 - Packed with tomato flavour. Savoury and paired well with the basa fish filet. Came with bean curd noodles as well. Came out luke warm. Easily would be a five star review if both soups that we got came out piping hot rather than lukewarm. Regardless, a great spot for a quick in and out meal.

Very flavorful and savoury, another great dish to go with rice. Soy Sauce Fried Rice: One of my fav childhood dishes, and they delivered very well. It's such a huge portion that we could only finish it in two days. Service was great, considerate and friendly. Wait list is old school...someone writes your name and number in a notebook and you are called when your table is ready. The interior is reminiscent of the old school taverns you see in those old Chinese movies where the traveller has spent days walking or on a horse and comes upon a tavern where the interior is all wooden tables and benches. Dining style and dishes are all family style. You order a couple of dishes and then add rice. Spice level can be adjusted and even at 'less' the heat level was high. Definitely generous use of Szechwan peppercorns! Food is very flavourful and depending on preference some might find the oil level high. The clientele is mainly Mandarin speaking and if you are Asian they will immediately communicate in Mandarin with you but I did see the staff switch to English where needed. Service was patient and attentive.
