    Odeng and Mussel Hot Pot
    Tiffany L.

Came here without a reservation on a Tuesday evening for dinner, and it hit the spot! The only thing that would've made it better is if sundubu (tofu soup) was on the dinner menu. For us two, we ordered the tteokbokki, the odeng and mussel hot pot, and the kimchi fried rice with chicken katsu. Both of us thought that the kimchi fried rice was the best dish, and the egg was super good with it. The hot pot was our least favorite dish because it was overly salty. The tteokbokki was good too, but I'm just not a fan of mozzarella. The service was also good, although it was a little bit slower since it was quite busy, but our server was very friendly. There are two seating areas in the front and in the back. The ones in the front have these cozy booths. The speaker system is also good and I liked their choice in music.

Had lunch here. The place smelled musty, old and damp. Not a good sign for a restaurant... I ordered the lunch set which was one rice pot and one soup/egg soufflé. There was only one small dish of kimchi as banchan. The food portion's okay but honestly it was very disappointing to have only kimchi.

Food 4/5 Ambiance 5/5 Value 2.5/5 Modern Korean spot with stylish vibes and decent food - but the portions are tiny. We ordered 6 dishes for 4 people and still left hungry Korean Fried Chicken 3/5: Made with chicken breast, which ended up on the dry side. Would've preferred dark meat. Kimchi Shrimp Scallop Pancake 2.5/5: Not your traditional Korean pancake--texture and flavor wasn't there for me, didn't love the batter and barely tasted any scallop. It's also 4 pieces when typically you get 6 pieces at majority restaurants Spicy Pork Bulgogi 4/5: Solid dish, slightly above average with decent flavor Spicy Chicken Galbi 4/5: Chicken was tender, but the mozzarella lacked that gooey cheese pull, maybe the plate wasn't hot enough Tomahawk 5/5: Incredibly juicy and flavorful, hands down the best thing here. But portion was shockingly small for a tomahawk Kimchi Fried Rice with Chicken Katsu 4.25/5: Above average taste and def aesthetically pleasing Overall, great for a trendy dinner out, but maybe not the place if you're really hungry.

4/5 food, 5/5 ambiance. No wait for my party of 4 on a Saturday around 9pm. We shared the Korean fried chicken, steak rice bowl, cold kimchi noodle soup, and kimchi fried rice with chicken katsu. The Korean fried chicken was alright. It was pretty dry and stringy. The steak in the steak rice bowl was pretty disappointing because it looked great but ended up being very tough to chew. Cold kimchi noodle soup was good and refreshing! Chicken katsu was good, and the kimchi fried rice had good smoky flavor. The eggs didn't cook entirely on the hot plate but they were happy to warm it up more for us to finish cooking the eggs. Service was good. Overall would come back to try other dishes and for the vibes!

Donkatsu was delicious, but the bulgogi quality could've been better. Service was fine and they give you kimchee on the side. I would give this spot a 3.5 rating for lunch.

Sam Sunny has been one of my favourite restaurants in NYC since I first discovered it a few years ago, and it's really heartening to see that the quality and price point has not changed very much since then! They can get busy at times (esp peak hours), but reservations are generally easy to come by. Even before you order anything, the side dishes are already worth a mention. The side salad they give is one of the best starters I've had -- the lettuce is always fresh and I adore the slightly-spicy dressing they add to it.  My favourite dishes here are the bulgogi soup and the samgyupsal. The bulgogi soup is full of delicious slices of beef (so flavourful and tender), tofu, mushrooms, and glass noodles, and the broth itself is so rich and pairs with the white rice really well. The samgyupsal is always grilled perfectly -- just the right amount of char for how juicy and tender it is. The sautéed kimchi is a particular highlight - I love the hint of caramelisation that balanced the natural sour flavour of kimchi. I've also tried the spicy beef noodle soup here (yummy, if not a bit too salty for my taste) and kimchi fried rice with chicken katsu (both parts were decent but not a standout). Once I ordered the Jeju tangerine tea here, which was remarkably good -- refreshing balance to the spicy/salty dishes without being too sweet. The service is always so warm (and the bartender is very friendly, perhaps too extroverted for my taste hahaha), and the dark ambience makes eating here feel so cosy. Love this place and will be back very soon!

Are you kidding me? Feeling so blessed to have found this place. Amazing food and drinks! I am from Chicago and feel like our places are great - but this place..... a Michelin in the making. Loved the beef soup dumpling (soup inside that explodes in your mouth) and some beef mushroom bowl with a little fire under it. Wow!! We sat at the bar and William (bartender, former engineer) was amazing - his drinks, phenomenal. And he was constantly creating new items. Creativity in the making. Had such an enjoyable time here.

Food is still lovely but they have reduced the number of banchan you get to just one- kimchi. I used to love the salad that was there and all the other wee bits and pieces. Service was great and it's a nice calm atmosphere

My boyfriend and I visited Sam Sunny for the first time, looking for something light and small before our dinner reservations later in the day. We decided on the beef steamed dumplings and the Korean fried chicken, along with a sweet honey plum tea--which was absolutely perfect for a cold winter day. We arrived early, so there was no wait, and the service was super quick. The dumplings were heavenly--a juicy burst of flavor in every bite. I would 100% come back just for them (honestly, I could eat two servings!). 9.5/10, highly recommend! For the Korean fried chicken, we actually asked them to bring us two small portions of each sauce so we could dip the chicken in ourselves. My boyfriend preferred the sweet and spicy sauce, while I liked the soy-based sauce better. Overall, though, while the chicken was good, it wasn't particularly memorable for me--I'd be coming back for the dumplings! If you're in the area, definitely worth a visit--especially for those dumplings!

Should've came during the lunch special 12-5, but the food was still swell for not being in k-town! I'd come back to try the pork belly and the braised beef-- next time for sure! Little pricier, but everything in ny is! Cheers!

This was my birthday dinner. I chose this place and man, what a wonderful restaurant! My husband had made a reservation but due to human error, they didn't have it. They made sure to seat as at the bar and give us some sangria as we waited. The owner came over and apologized. It's not a big place and there are some booths. My seafood hot pot was the BEST I've ever had of this dish. The broth had such a nice flavor and just enough kick. We also loved the Uni Bip Bim Bap and the galbi skewers. We will definitely be going back. Staff was top notch!

    25oz Tomahawk 'Galbi'
    Lisa C.

I was excited to try Sam Sunny based on the reviews but unfortunately most of the food was just fine and didn't really stand out. There's a lot of competition for Korean food at this price point in NYC so I don't think I'll be likely to come back. We ordered the Korean fried chicken, tomahawk galbi, spicy chicken galbi, and the shrimp and scallop tofu soup. The spicy chicken galbi was especially disappointing since the cheese was not hot enough to melt, so it didn't pair well with the meat. The tomahawk galbi came with four sauces and we ate some pieces alone and others in the lettuce wrap. The Korean fried chicken was made with white meat, and I prefer dark meat since it's usually more juicy. It comes with two sauces - a savory and spicy sauce. I felt that there wasn't enough of the savory sauce, but the fried chicken was covered in the spicy sauce. The service was fine if unremarkable, and the restaurant had a nice date night type ambience, but I still left wishing I had enjoyed my meal more.

    Kimchi Shrimp Scallop Pancake
    Tansy W.

Food was decent but nothing was particularly amazing. Best was the shrimp tofu soup and maybe the tomahawk but not as good as other places. The shrimp pancake was disappointing as was the ban chan. The chicken katsu fried rice wasn't bad but the egg got stuck on the bottom. Service was mixed. Although the food came out fast, no one ever came up to check up on us so our water was empty most of the night. Sadly probably won't return.

I was warmly greeted by the gentleman at the door (5 service there), which set a great first impression. However, as soon as I walked downstairs, it felt like the space had lost its speakeasy vibe. I was seated right near the stairs and could feel cold air from outside every time the door opened, which made the experience uncomfortable. I was also surprised to see how much the cocktail menu had been reduced. When I asked about it, the response was that "the place changed a lot." That's fair -- places evolve -- but instead of highlighting the improvements or new strengths, the explanation focused negatively on what the bar used to be. As someone who really enjoyed the former version, that wasn't reassuring. Unfortunately, the drinks themselves didn't make up for it. One of the two cocktails was simply not good. No one came back to check on the drinks, and when I asked for the check after about 20 minutes, there was no acknowledgment that I had barely touched mine or any inquiry about my experience. Overall, a place I once enjoyed and recommended now feels more like a standard dive bar where " Mixologist " were replaced by bartender and were fun cool looking and tasty drinks were replaced by " less complex cocktail ", lacking the warmth and attention to detail that once made it special.

For drinks, we ordered the Smoke Show and the King Tusk. The Smoke Show was beautifully balanced. The Grey Goose vodka and Dolin Dry gave it that classic martini backbone, but the fino sherry and brine added depth. The smoked olive oil and blue cheese olive brought just enough savory drama without overpowering the glass. It was complex but not fussy. The King Tusk leaned more aromatic and layered. The vermouths gave it richness, while the Buddha's Hand and osmanthus flower added subtle citrus and floral notes that lingered in a really elegant way. It felt like a cocktail designed to be savored slowly. The music fit the mood perfectly, not too loud, just enough to give the room energy without killing conversation.
